This debut paranormal urban fantasy has a lot going for it. You've got your headstrong smart heroine (along with her equally headstrong sister), a slightly mysterious handsome man who comes in and upsets the balance of a lot of things in the heroine's life, and an entity that can seemingly cause the heroine to black out, do things she doesn't remember, and wants to kill her. Add in a creepy haunted hotel, a little misdirection, and a dollop of romantic tension and you've got yourself a winner.
Fractured Legacy is the story of Kaylyn, a paranormal investigator who works for Aicil, a mysterious and rather large organization that we only scratch the surface of in this book. She's partnered with her sister, Cole, a year younger, but definitely the more responsible of the two. Kaylyn is sometimes flippant, irreverent, and careless. But she's smart and though her common sense takes a walk off a pier several times in the book, for the most part, she's got a good head on her shoulders.
The two sisters' lives are thrown in to chaos when a new boss, Jonah Troyer comes to town and takes over the local Aicil office. He's been given orders to force Kaylyn out (Cole too potentially) but he decides that he needs to make up his own mind before ending their careers. Along the way, he starts to realize that there is more to Kaylyn than meets the eye. The relationship between the two was fascinating. It wasn't romantic, though there is obviously the possibility for that in the future. Honestly though, I really enjoy the way the two play off of each other and I'm not sure that will work if things turn steamy in a future book.
Though Kaylyn was obviously intended to be the star of this book, it's Jonah who really captured my interest. He was so well done as a character and his emotions, his reasoning, and his choices really held me. The chapters alternate between points of view and Jonah's chapters were my favorite.
The book has a few minor issues which kept me from rating it 5 stars. It ends a little too quickly. I wanted an epilogue or at least a few more lines between Jonah and Kaylyn to cement their feelings about each other and the future. I wanted more backlash with what happened in Cole's home. [And there were a couple of other questions I had that I can't detail because...spoilers!] I thought the resolution to the main conflict was very well done, but even that could have benefitted from one or two more paragraphs of explanation.
There were some formatting and editing issues that occasionally stuck out for me (extra spaces, commas, etc), but they weren't so egregious that they detracted from the story. However, I'd hope that a future re-release might fix them.
I think this series has great potential. I want to see where all of these characters go and I will definitely be purchasing future books. The author has true talent for pacing and emotion, and I think future books will only improve on what is truly an excellent beginning to the series.
