What an exciting sequel!

Shō's team is beginning to learn how to play together. Before, in vol. 1, it seemed like they didn't even practice together. Knowing how sports mangas go helped me realize that this battle between schools is going to be long and fought until the end of the series.

Honestly, I was surprised to learn/realize that these are junior high kids. They're fairly good all together, with a few shining stars already.

Shō hasn't had much character growth yet. He's had a few epic scenes with Tatsuya. These two are gonna be unstoppable. Ivan just tell it now. Shige was formally introduced in this volume. I think he's a pretty interesting character. I like Tatsuya's personality better than his, but he does have his qualities that are enjoyable.

I'm making another prediction. Shō, in vol. 1 has this ideal height that he wants to be. The author even drew it. I'm guessing that because of all this exercise and future puberty, he's going to reach it. I can't wait to see this prediction prove itself!

This leaves off mid-game, which is very nerve wracking.

Whistle!, Vol. 2 continues where the previous tankobon left off and contains the next nine chapters (8–16) of the on-going manga series.

Apparently, Yasuaki Honma, the former captain of the soccer team has been threatening people to quit the soccer team en masse and not to return, so the soccer team would practically be useless, because they need eleven people to form a team and to enter competitions. When Yasuaki Honma heard that Hideyoshi Noro, a first year student who is a rather chubby, would occasionally play with Shō Kazamatsuri after his practice – Yasuaki Honma thought that he would teach Hideyoshi Noro a lesson.

Through the determination and friendship of Shō Kazamatsuri, Hideyoshi Noro and Shigeki Satō, who has been tailing Shō Kazamatsuri for a while decided to join the soccer team. Shigeki Satō was one of the strongest players on the team during their freshmen year, but quit because the team wasn't serious enough for him and Tatsuya Mizuno was way too serious and no fun.

With these two new members, Sakura Josui Soccer Team, was able to join the upcoming competition with just the minimum people needed – eleven. Unfortunately, they drawn Musashinomori Soccer Team – the best soccer team in their district – the school that Shō Kazamatsuri transferred from, because he wouldn’t get the chance to play soccer – a sport he loves.

We also learned that the coach from Musashinomori Soccer Team is Tatsuya Mizuno's father. Apparently, Tatsuya Mizuno took his mother’s maiden name and transferred to Sakura Josui Middle School and joins their soccer team, because his soccer philosophy differs from his father. His father believes that winning is all that matter in soccer and that his son is wasting his talents playing on a third-rate team, but Tatsuya Mizuno believes that soccer should be enjoyed and played with camaraderie.

On the day of the match, Tatsuya Mizuno was surprised to see that they would be playing not the second-string players as his father told him, but the main team. Musashinomori immediately scores two goals, but Sakura Josui played a very defensive game afterwards, which was spearheaded by Shō Kazamatsuri. Tatsuya Mizuno almost scored by a penalty kick – it seems that one of the players on the Musashinomori team is out to get Tatsuya Mizuno – at any cost, which is why the opposing team is against him. The tankobon ends in the middle of their game.

Daisuke Higuchi has written and illustrated this tankobon. For the most part I really liked the story, Higuchi is a tad too verbose in some of her dialogue, but it's not too prevalent, albeit still noticeable. I really like the protagonist of the story – Shō Kazamatsuri is the spirit and soul of the team and I love reading about his growth. The illustrations are rather good as well and it emphasizes the text rather well.

All in all, Whistle!, Vol. 2 is a wonderful continuation of the series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

In this book, Whistle, it continuing the last book that the boy win the first game, and his friend’s father want his friend not join in the boy’s team, because the father thinks that the boy’s team’s soccer skill is very bad. But the boy’s friend don’t want to leave the soccer team with his friends, so his dad call a substitute players to play a game with them. When they start the game, they found that they isn’t the substitute players, they are regular team, they need to play with regular team. So they are scared. And the first 20 min, the regular team score 3 but they scored 0. So, they want to fight back. And the game is still continuing. I think they will lose in this game, because they are playing with a regular team, and they already scored 3, so I’m look forward to the book 3.

The district primary is approaching, and Josui Junior High has drawn Musashinomori as their first opponent - and their playing their regular team instead of their substitutes. Musashinomori quickly takes a 2-0 lead and Josui struggles to regain the momentum.

This volume focuses a little more on character development, revealing Tatsuya's father and family situation. By developing his character with backstory - especially one that many can relate to - the story becomes even stronger. Unfortunately, while the bullying chapter offered a way for Shigeki to rejoin the team, the thugs kidnapping Hiroyoshi and the other Josui students was a little contrived.

The soccer action is fun and informative - the spectators, such as Sho's brother and Oji from the food stand - offer explanations that help readers who don't have a lot of experience with soccer (like myself). The soccer is fast-paced but never gets too technical, and the cliffhanger at the end leaves readers begging for the next volume.
