Whistle!, Vol. 9 continues where the previous tankobon left off and contains the next nine chapters (72–80) of the on-going manga series.

Through sheer will, Shō Kazamatsuri was able to score a goal against Rakuyō tying the game 1–1 at the end of the second half. Since it’s a tournament game – the game goes into extension time. However, that too was also scoreless so it comes down to penalty kicks – the five chosen for Sakura Josui in kicking order is: Tatsuya Mizuno, Shō Kazamatsuri, Yusuke Morinaga, Shigeki Satō, and Masato Takai. Surprisingly, Tatsuya Mizuno and Shō Kazamatsuri failed their penalty kicks and the rest made it beating Rakuyō in penalty kicks 3–2, giving the win to Sakura Josui.

The penultimate chapter (Stage 79) of the tankobon deals with the Sakura Josui Girls' Soccer Team – finally. Yuki Kojima is excited to find out that all the application for the Girls' Soccer Team was all gone. However, on the day of try-outs, Yuki Kojima discovered that most of the girls wanted to join to get closer to Tatsuya Mizuno whom seems to have quite the fan club.

Yuki Kojima quickly whittles down the applicants down to four – two girls who has some knowledge in playing soccer: Shizuyo Toda and Nene Yokoyama and two others who showed persistence: Miyuki Sakurai, who has a crush on Shō Kazamatsuri and Maiko Kamijo, who seems to have a rival with Yuki Kojima.

The last chapter (Stage 80) centers on Yūko Katori, the staff club leader of the two soccer teams, tells the team that they have to study and pass all their examinations or they might have to sit out of the soccer team until their grades are up. It is a rather comical chapter where the team heads towards Shō Kazamatsuri's flat and we get to see who the smart ones are those that are not so, which includes Shō Kazamatsuri.

Daisuke Higuchi has written and illustrated this tankobon. For the most part I really liked the direction of the story. I liked that she gave some of the lesser players to shine by having them scoring or saving the winning goals that gave Sakura Josui the win over Rakuyō. I also liked that she devoted a chapter to the Girls' Soccer Team and the academics side of the series – which should be equally as important in the series with soccer.

All in all, Whistle!, Vol. 9 is a wonderful continuation of the series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

This begins the mounting of tension. The main character and his supporting characters each got a turn in the spotlight, leading to a more complex and meaningful story.

Honestly, because of what happened in this volume, I'm getting a little worried. There's not enough change in Shō yet. I really wonder what's going to happen to him.

My favorite character (Daichi) gets the spotlight in this one! ❤️
