Andras When the light-magic users known as Casters took everything from me, I vowed to make them pay.
Little did I know the perfect opportunity would show up in the form of a sweet Caster the moment I took his arrow to the heart… literally. Bastian knows that I’m made of dark magic, the very thing he’s been taught to destroy. But instead of turning away from me, he takes a chance on me, leading me behind the walls of the group out to kill me.
Bastian makes me remember that there’s more to life than revenge—although I can’t help but love the look he gives me when I cause chaos. But what I don't realize is there's someone who's been watching me, someone only Bastian can help me fight.
Bastian How is it that a man wielding dark magic is the only one who can save me?
Even though Andras goes against everything I fight for, I can’t stop myself from drawing him into my life.
What’s worse is that it’s clear he wants something from the Casters, but when he makes me laugh and feel like I’m living for the first time in my life, it’s impossible to turn him away.
When I find myself caught in a web of lies between those I trusted and those I feared, I realize the only one I can rely on is the one person who’s forbidden.
Cast in Shadows contains an antihero with no filter and a strange obsession with chili, a “pet” who sleeps through all the excitement, and possibly the least romantic movie date ever.
Alice Winters started writing stories as soon as she was old enough to turn her ideas into written words. She loves writing a variety of things from romance and comedy to action. She also enjoys reading, horseback riding, and spending time with her pets.
Like I needed another series added to my list. How dare you appeal to my ghost story fascination. This was suppose to be the year for monster's. Here you have shades, casters, and cultists mentality.
I devoured this book. Just had to over look the dead bodies. So much violence, with a secret known by a few. All because Olde boy couldn't sit on the sidelines.
This is the regular Alice Winters book, I always have a good time with her book, the book is very funny, the mystery is pretty good but the character are kinda bad? The main character is so childish it makes me cringe a little. A good book to read if nothing else is catching your attention, it's the kind of book you know you'll have a good time but not a great time but when you are in a literary depression good time is amazing!
When I started this story a few days ago, I read 10% of it and decided that it wasn’t for me. I didn’t like the way Andras was treating Bastian and I could already tell that the romance was going to be more of a subplot than anything else. The thing is I kept wondering how in the world the two of them ended up tolerating each other, let alone falling in love. They were so different and had completely different goals in mind. So I went back to the story. And yeah, I ended up loving it. It took me a while to understand everything that was going on but once I did, I couldn’t put it down.
I’m always complaining that Alice Winters’ main characters are all replicas of each other with only slight variations between series, but that wasn’t the case here. Andras was a bit goofy but he wasn’t as over the top and cringy as some of her other characters and I don’t recall anyone who was similar to Bastian.
The plot follows Andras and Bastian as they try to figure out why so many powerful shades, which are like evil spirits that attach to human bodies and feed off their negativity, have invaded their city. There is also a curse that has at one point or another affected both of them that they don’t understand the origin of, and a powerful caster who seems to want to… destroy all of the other casters? I’m not sure, but there was a lot going on. Though, this isn’t the type of story that I normally read, I was so invested that if I didn’t have mom responsibilities I would've finished it in one sitting.
The romance was definitely not the main focus of this story so if that’s what you’re in the mood for you’ll probably be disappointed but there is enough attraction between the two MCs to keep you satisfied until something more substantial happens in book two (hopefully).
Because this is a duology the story isn’t complete but book one does end at a nice stopping point. 5 stars, one of my new favorites from this author.
Now what!! I need more immediately because I fell in love with these characters, the action, the humour and I just can't get enough! We have the supposedly good guys fighting the supposedly bad guys but is it really all black and white? Our MC Bastian definitely had his world turn upside down after he shot the most wanted enemy and he found himself being involved against his will in a fight against someone they seem to able to defeat only when they work together.
Andras is such a hilarious character, full of dark magic and humour. He is exactly what Bastian needed after being degraded by his family every step of the way. He doesn't want to get close to a creature full of darkness he was always told was evil and needed to be eliminated, but the way Andras makes Bastian smile, how he makes his feel lighter than he's ever felt, makes the feelings arise inevitably. I love them together and I can't wait to see what other shenanigans they're going to be involved with and how they're going to fit they're relationship and all the feelings it comes with.
The mystery and action kept me glued to the pages. I love how the romance is mixed with everything that's going on. And there's a lot going on!!
★★ STARS!! So.....the story itself was an okay read. I'm sad to give this rating. The characters had no chemistry. There was very little romance and I just didn't find the characters entertaining or unique.
This author very much so has a repetitive trope type when it comes to her main characters. They're always grumpy/sunshine. The overly dramatic, crazy shenanigans and the stoic, dry humor one. While that's okay, it just gets boring when they're all too similar. Andras was Leland and Lake (characters from previous books) rolled into one. It just felt like already done and overly used vibes in a main character. Bastian was Jackson and Declan (characters from previous books) rolled in one but dumbed down.
The story itself was okay. It was almost like reading a story about two strangers becoming friends getting themselves mixed up with shenanigans and action.
I really liked how this was still very Alice Winters but also a bit darker than usual. Her Within the Mind books are fantastic and I would like more like this and that.
I did find the world building and character development to be a bit lacking but overall still a good time.
I feel very bad for Chase’s dad. Not sure if I should or not.
This book really is not working for me, so time to put a pin in it. Maybe I'll try again at some point...maybe not, but after 4 days of struggling, I think it's time to move on.
I've liked several of Winters' series, so that's why I'm disappointed I didn't like this one as much. It really feels like a rehash of all of the same character types and same relationship dynamics but in a different (but interesting) scenario. It wasn't awful; it was just very, very repetitive.
4.25 stars. Duology following the same couple, m/m, filled with the silliness and snark that is the hallmark of this author. A true enemies to lovers that does not resolve quickly, these two are not a couple for almost all of the first book.
Very interesting world building. Vendetta story with questing, plotting, bad guys that are actually bad, good guys, cluelessness and sass. We get a satisfying ending in book one, but it only partially completes the story, ends on a hopeful note but with more questing and plotting to be done. Book two starts immediately after the first, here is where we start to see the MC come together as a couple, full of snark, banter and cluelessness. Ends with a culmination of all the plotting and an HEA.
Overall the story moved along pretty well with new information and action scenes unfolding at a good pace to keep things interesting. The end was a bit much with so many characters and a huge info dump of who was on what side, who double crossed who, this one was doing this while that one was doing that. The who-done-it was lost on me and I ended up skimming it, would have preferred it be a bit simpler since this is a silly, ridiculous book at its core.
Magic, dark/light, enemies to lovers, current world, vers, m/m.
Well this book just sucked me in, held on tight and wouldn’t let me go. So many interesting things happening plot wise. The battle between dark and light magic users, the mystery of what/who Andras is, why the sweet and selfless Bastian is treated so poorly by his family, the unknown “dark magic man” and the budding attraction between Andras and Bastian that is at times super cute and super hilarious with plenty of sass! The highlight function of my kindle was put to good use numerous times.
I loved the two very likeable main characters who are well supported by the interesting side characters. This is a slow burn low heat romance perfectly balanced with the action of magic users battling it out in an urban setting. There’s a HFN ending for Andras and Bastian whilst the unknown “dark magic man” storyline is far from over and I can’t wait for more!
This was a great start to a new series. This was such a unique story about the battle between dark and light magic users. It took me a little bit to get a handle on the who's who and all the terms in this magical world, as the author set the stage and was building this fascinating world, but once I did I was fully invested in Bastian and Andras's adventures! Bastian was such a kind soul with powerful magic who was treated so poorly by his "family" and deserved to find someone to really care about him. Andras was a hoot, so silly and non-serious at times, but got serious when he needed to in order to protect those he cared for. As they are "working together " to figure out what's going on, there is a budding attraction building between Andras and Bastian that was really cute, often hilarious, and a tad steamy! This was an action packed adventure, with a side of slow burn, low heat romance that kept me flipping pages, laughing out loud at times, and rooting for them to come out on top! We are left in a good place, but with not quite everything explained, leaving me excited for what's to come!
Great slow burn romance. I would categorize this book is more of a paranormal comedy romance. The book is more story driven unless romance. But I still enjoyed the world building and the relationship.
A couple of main characters who have some really wonderful quirks to them, surrounded by a lot of characters who are almost blatantly caricatures. The world itself is a really fun idea, and ultimately everything about this book, the characters and the plot, remains surface-level, so it reads like an enjoyable beach-read without cutting too deeply into the psyche.
Would I go back in time and still read this book, knowing what I know now? Probably not. I’m not even certain I’m going to read the second book in the duology.
See below for the four criteria I use to decide whether and when to read a book
CHARACTERS: Perhaps this is a testament to how the characters are in the book, but I actually don’t even know what Bastian, one of the two main characters, even looks like. I’d be impressed if I managed to miss that, seeing as it’s something I do always want to know and so I look out for it, but to the best of my knowledge, Bastian was never actually described throughout the book. This is indicative to me of the superficial quality that glazes over the book. That doesn’t mean the characters don’t have their bright spots! I love that Bastian is so silent that everyone is surprised when he speaks up at all, and Andras definitely has some golden zingers because he’s so sassy. All in all, though they were enjoyable on a surface level, we never really got a chance to delve into them, into what makes them tick.
PLOT: The plot seems straightforward at first, with the quest format where the characters both want something the other can help them with and therefore they end up working together. That being said, there is a lot of mystery that Andras keeps from Bastian, which means it’s also kept from the readers. I believe to our detriment, because again, we don’t really see the layers stripped off with either of them and delve into their vulnerabilities and growth and what would have them leaping off the page. That’s not plot-specific, just an aside based on the plot. The plot itself does keep a fairly constant pace, a light skimming over the surface waves of the book.
EMOTIONAL INTENSITY: There is no good/bad here. Sometimes I just want a low-investment entertainment read whereas other times a high-stakes 'I need a therapist to recover' is what I need.
1 out of 5. Low. Definitely no worry about getting super attached to these characters. It was entertaining on that superficial level that put my mind elsewhere for a little while.
CATHARTIC FULFILLMENT: Is the emotional journey worth it? Do I finish this book feeling that I've crested the wave of the climactic moment and everything has been settled, leaving me settled and fulfilled?
50%. I mean, there wasn’t much of a catharsis, but because everything stayed surface-level fun, I can’t say that it wasn’t mostly fulfilled at the end either.
I want to live in this world! And I forever claim Andras as mine, mine, mine. He’s sssinfully fun and my kind of dark. I adore everything about him, from how he grudgingly makes decisions all the way to his sense of humor and outlook on life. He is all that is right, and entertaining, with the world, and I would feed him chili for every meal as long as he stayed by my side.
“You might think you’re the darkness in this world of light, but I don’t see it that way. I only see you and the brightness you bring to my life.”
Bastian, Bastian, Bastian! I love him to pieces and am sssooo glad he ran into Andras. This man deserves everything, and I’d steal it all for him and then some. Good thing Andras is the key, or is that sword, to his happiness. Twisty-turns fun, exciting surprises, and the beginnings of a series I hope never ends; light, dark, or somewhere in between, I’d go any infinite adventures with these two as long as they never change. They are absssolutley perfect just as they are.
I'm always excited to get my hands on a new book by Alice Winters, and I've yet to be disappointed! Honestly, this is one of my insta-read, insta-buy, insta-insta authors. The books never fail to be full of intrigue, a fantastic world, romance, and humor.
This setting is a new one, so I was really excited to see what kind of set up we were going to get. I am loving the play on dark magic and light magic. The world sucked me in immediately, and the broad cast of characters and worldbuilding was a real pleasure to watch unfold.
And then we have Andras and Bastian. The thing is, I always know I'm going to get attached to our lead characters in these books. It's a hands down given thing... but I'm really, really feeling fond of these two. Alice Winters is kind of a genius at writing pairs that offer enough action, chemistry and humor to pull you in and keep you there.
I can't wait to see where this series goes, and I'll be waiting impatiently over in the corner for book 2.
"I’m not a man who is easily attracted to people. Of course I find people attractive, but I’ve never really desired anyone. I’ve never really wanted someone… And this is the man my brain and body have chosen. This is the chosen one."
Alice Winters always writes these amazing stories that I just don't want to end. I was immediately sucked into this story.
Bastien is a Caster with light magic who hunts shades. Andras has dark magic and is know by the Casters as "The Wrath".
When Bastien fails to capture Andras and ends up with a curse that prevents him from protecting himself from shades, he's forced to work with Andras to figure out how to break the curse.
Just like all her other series Alice brings the mystery and mayhem with lots of comedy. One click author for me. I cannot wait for the audible!
This book was fantastic!!! I love how the author can make you laugh and at the same time delivers an amazing plot that will grab you and I can’t let go until you finish it!!! It’s really interesting how Bastian and Andras at first are enemies, both are part of the battle between light and dark magic, this shadows are a mystery for me, they can possess humans and they feed of their negative feelings and the casters use light magic to destroy them. Bastian is a caster and the sweetest thing, after his first encounter with Bastian he ends up with a curse and able to use dark magic. Andras is different from the others shadows he can do more things that the others. Andras is fun and entertaining he is definitely a little crazy, both he and Bastian are hilarious, poor Bastian he can’t help that Andras is sometimes to dense to understand his attraction. I love the banter and the teasing between them.
These two are very fun and their romance is a slow burn, they went through many dangers and the more problem they face more questions around the enemies arise. The secondary characters are an important part of story, this book ends with a HFN, but I hope we get more of Andras and Bastian soon, this was a great story!!! and I can’t wait for more!
Alice winters’ books make me extremely happy😂 This was another great addition . Absolutely loved these characters. Andras was of course my favorite because why not🤣🤣 Bastian was an absolute cutie. I followed the story from the beginning and loved every minute of it. Couldn’t put it down. Now I’m discovering i have to wait a month for book 2?! I’m in tears😭
Andras and Bastian were such great characters. I loved reading about them. I need so much more from this series. Sorry but Sir Reginald is still my favourite pet.
LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!! I can't wait to read more from this world. Bas and Andras each have a special place in my heart now. Bas is such a sweet soul, and Andras offers all the comedy that Alice Winters' books are known for. Together, they can do anything, and I can't wait to see more of their journey.
Andras was all kinds of crazy who made me laugh from beginning to end.
Bastian was sweet but the way he was treated broke my heart. He was so closed off in the beginning but being around Andras made him open up and enjoy simple things in life.
Fantastic book and I really enjoyed it.
*I voluntarily read this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else's*
And here I fall down another alice winters rabbit hole! This should be another brilliantly unique series and cannot wait to see what happens next with this group and let's just hope Roman pulls his head from his bum and chooses the correct side and helps our not so heroic heroes.
