When the marine aliens rescued us, telling us they were going to treat us like queens, I envisioned spa days and relaxation. I did not imagine being sent into a dangerous labyrinth so their eligible males could hunt us, claiming us as mates.
As soon as I’m tossed into the labyrinth, it’s clear this isn’t going to be some relaxing swim at the beach. It’s as beautiful as it is deadly, and when the alien who made it turns up to help me, I’m not sure what to think.
He keeps me safe. He’s kind, careful, and for a purple alien, hot. That is, until he says I’m his.

Alien Tides de January Bell serie Alien Dating Games libro 1
Argumento:
Él me mantiene a salvo.
Me mantuvo intrigada y leyendo.
Other than humans can’t breathe pure oxygen. It was very good!! I really love January’s books. They are well done without being too light. Her characters are realistic so even though it’s fluff it’s full
I was looking forward to this. We find out what happened to the other women in the prison that left with the marine aliens in book 3 of the Accidental Alien Brides series. It works alright for a series-starter novella.
I wish this was a tad longer so Meg and Tredion had more time to actually meet. They spoke for like 5 minutes, separated for hours, and then spoke for like 2 minutes again and bam, agree to be mates. Tredion apparently has his mate bond feeling but Meg? What on earth did Meg have to go on?
She says he saved her twice but he.. kinda was partially responsible for putting her in danger one time and she kinda supposedly wasn't in danger the other time. And sure, it could be worse, as she's seen plenty of worse options with the Roth, but that's hardly winning advice to sell a lifelong commitment on after a total time of 10 minutes speaking to someone, you know?
Thankfully, what we do get of Tredion, I liked him well enough. Meg was alright for what little we get of her, too, minus the same issues she suffers as the rest of the human women (addressed below).
I also liked that the Arco Reif shows up again even though I admittedly didn't remember him from the 3rd book. I only realized it was the same character because I didn't remember the Arco being described as so... pretty and purple and iridescent? originally and went back to check. Our MMC Tredion is very purple with lavender eyes compared to Reif's blue everything but otherwise they do sound the same. Only real difference is I didn't see the face fins mentioned here.
There were some errors that were confusing. There's consistent reference to only four human women but 5 names are used (not counting a misspelling) and the Arco refers to having a 5th one enter the maze.
These women are also supposed to be Earth Federation soldiers on a space mission that were taken prisoner by the Roth. Like the women in Secretly Married to Aliens by the Government series, they also seem rather... incompetent.
Now, don't get me wrong, they've been through a lot. The Roth invasion, war, the supposed military training, space flight preparation and training (presumably?), watching half their crew get slaughtered, taken and held prisoner, experimented on, and now they're being forced through a deadly-ish water-based labyrinth. It's a lot. I get it, I really do, but you would think that not all of them would be so fearful or terrible at everything?
We may actually have a clue in this novella, straight from the thoughts of the Arco Tredion: "The Earth Federation is not the elite fighting force it thinks it is[...]" Sooo... maybe it's not that THESE human WOMEN suck so much as just ALL humans suck? I guess I feel marginally less offended? Lol
i picked this up because the cover looked pretty and it is only 65 pages (also it was free) - it definitely did not let me down
i think it could have been longer as some of the plot points and relationship building was very rushed, but i think the author worked will within the space she allowed herself for the novella
ngl i will probably either pick up another book by her in the future or continue with this series/world at some point
This was a cute book, but was a bit to insta-love-y for my tastes. Also, we get zero backstory on both MCs beyond their occupations. The spice was fun though.
This is hard for me to review. I love the cover art. There are parts of the story that I both liked and hated though. This is also very short, so I think it was all a bit rushed.
Imagine getting dropped on an aquatic alien world and told that they'd really like you to participate in their mate games where they put you in an arena deep down in the ocean and the males of the species hunt you and claim you as their bride. It sounds dark. But it was very cute and not at all as intense as it sounds! It is very short and is really a spin-off from another January Bell series so it doesn't *technically* stand alone. But I followed along just fine! There wasn't a lot of explanation which is...kinda necessary in a sci-fi novella otherwise you're lost like a lil baby duck. But I loved the MCs and the set-up for this series is SO unique! I haven't read a ton of aquatic aliens so I'm hype to see where the rest of this goes. If you haven't read January's Accidental Alien Brides series, highly highly recommend.
🌊 “I will hunt her. I will find her. I will kiss her better.” ~~~ If you’ve read the Accidental Alien Brides series, you might remember meeting the Arco. Well, now it’s time to visit their world and see how the group of ladies who chose to go with them are faring.
Meg is so awesome! She’s strong, fierce and knows how to survive in dangerous situations. Even more, I loved her curiosity and open-mindedness. And she was so brave to face any dangers thrown her way. I loved her so much!
And then we have Tredion - a huge, smart, strong and smoking-hot Acro. He’s such a good, fiercely protective, kind and honorable (and a bit possessive) male and I adored every single thing about him!
I absolutely loved everything that happened between Meg and Tredion! The Earth women were promised to be treated as queens and the last thing they expected was to be tributes in the Mating Game - an age-old and honored Acro tradition. And Tredion is the main person responsible for creating the game. From the moment they met, they’re intensely attracted to each other and Meg surely triggers all of Tredion’s protective and mating impulses. But Tredion, as the maze-maker, is not supposed to participate in the hunt and he does his best to resist his urges. But when he gets permission from none other than the King, all bets are off. I loved Tredion and Meg together! Their chemistry was fantastic. I loved Tredion’s determination to prove to Meg that he’s the one for her. And I also absolutely adored him for giving her the choice to be (or not) with him. Meg and Tredion were so perfect for each other and, when they couldn’t resist the undeniable need for one another the passionate moments they shared were blazing hot! Or to quote Meg herself - “Holy eggplant, Batman!” I just couldn’t get enough!
In addition, the storyline was phenomenal! Not only was I super excited to visit Acro but the Mating Game made things even more interesting. Even more, I really loved all the Earth women and the other Acro contestants, especially the King. And there’s also a giant alien sea dragon who loves to… snuggle! With all the adventures, suspense, danger, humor and passion, I was glued to the pages till the very end.
Overall, I absolutely loved Alien Tides and I cannot wait for more stories from the Acro world!
Tribute Volunteer encounters Fluvial Game Maker “You are more beautiful than the moon shining on open water”
Meg is an optimistic go with the flow/gut instinct kind of girl with an instant attraction to one of the first Arco she encounters. Tredion is a possessive, obsessive and protective game maker, not good enough to hunt for his beautiful human.
Rescued from a breeding prison, a group of women chose to experience the Arco culture in a fun way and establish themselves on a new planet. The women partake in the Alien Mating Games, where they are entered into a maze to be hunted *cough* I mean found and protected by an Arco male.
I really enjoyed this couple; the characters had instant chemistry and suited each other well.
The only problems I had with this book were as follows: - There was not enough action for my thrill loving heart (but that is a personal view, I would have loved more to do with the Kulkutta, I feel like there may have been a missed opportunity to show Meg how sweet and caring Tredion can be) Maybe more about how and why he created the maze to be as it was, and some input from Meg how to make it more human friendly? - I got confused with the number of women and contestants entering the maze - The book was too short “It all happened so fast”. I enjoyed this book so much and when I got to the end, I was displeased. I wish I could have continued to read about Meg and Tredion because I really enjoyed them and wanted to get to know them better.
I rate this book 4.0 stars overall. I really did enjoy the couple and feel this was a quick dive into the new world. Side note: I. Fooking. Love. Penny. I laughed out loud a total of three times before she disappeared from the story. I am super excited to see what terror she brings when it is her time to shine.
“We’ll treat you like queens, he said. Come with us to Arco, he said. Yeah, well, the problem with that kind of promise from an alien race you know next to nothing about is that, well, you don’t know what the hell they treat queens like on their planet.”
The Arco males have rescued human females from an alien breeding prison program (same universe as January Bell’s Accidental Alien Brides and Bound by Fire series). The human females have decided to try to make the Arco marine planet their new home and decide to try out the local culture by entering the Mating Game, a labyrinth where the Arco males determines which female would be their best match.
This is a fun spicy start to a new series by January Bell. The idea of being in a deep underwater dome scares the crap out of me (deep see pressure, fear of drowning), but if I put that aside I’m looking forward to a new planet with new alien beings. The labyrinth calls to the primal chase of the Arco people and I can’t wait til the Arco and humans listen to the call 🐚🐚🐚
🟣 FMC: Meg, human female, Earth Federation officer rescued from a breeding prison 🟣 MMC: Tredion, Arcon male, game-maker in charge of building the Mating Game maze. This book was like a sci-fi romance that meets the hunger games but is meshed with a labyrinth and wasn't nearly long enough as it left you wanting to explore the world more. The romance between Meg and Tredion was a little on the insta-love side of things, but considering this is a novella, that's to be expected.
Overall, this book carried all of the January Bell staples: -Alien pet (aka mystical water dragon) -Fated mates with an HEA -Humor that brought tears to my eyes from laughing so much. -A creative world that leaves you wanting to read the next book!
Favorite scene: “What would it have done with me?” I ask, my voice hoarse as though I’ve been screaming instead of barely breathing for the last stretch of time. “It would have taken you to its cave, deep underwater, and forced you to snuggle with it until an Arco found you.” “It would have… snuggled me,” I repeat in a strangled voice. “Is this a translation issue? Do you mean eaten? Digested?”
Only complaint: The only reason I docked a star was due to an editing error near the beginning. Within the first few chapters, out of Meg's three friends, there's a Steph that's mentioned before they put on their jumpsuits. As Steph is never mentioned again and the other girls are, I'm thinking it's a typo where the name got switched. Honestly, it doesn't detract from the story, but it did make me stop for a second to think about how many people were with Meg. Overall though, I'd still recommend it for a fun, quick read!
This was a good start to the new series in general. The world sounds amazing and I’m intrigued by the “hunting game”. The females that were introduced also piqued my interest as well as the Arco males. This is a very short story. Just a small nibble of what is to come so for that reason I can’t quite give it more than 3 stars.
It was really hard to connect with Meg. I didn’t find her as interesting as some of the others we caught a small glimpse of. The same could be said for Tredion. We know so little about them that it felt like we were moving at warp speed. Which I understand had to do with the length and this being an introduction book.
I do think that had we learned more about them, I would have given this story a four if not a five. The solid foundation was there and Meg and Tredion seemed like cool characters.
I’m really looking forward to seeing the other females get “caught” by their mates and see who the other female that got pulled in is. All and all, good start and I’m looking forward to diving, (ha! Pun intended) back into this world.
Was this novella supposed to make me fall in love with Penny? Because I love Penny. I can't WAIT for her book.
This book contains your this authors typical level of hilarious shenanigans. Full of pop culture references that breathe life into my shriveled millennial soul.
I anticipate this series meeting the needs of every girlie that watched "The Shape of Water" and was like, hmmm.... Definite Smash. Penny says it best. "I mean, I love fish, I've always loved fish" 🤣
Tredion (which my brain kept calling 'Trident', especially after meeting 'Reif') is purple alien who was giving me Chris Pratt in Jurassic World vibes.
Meg was lovely. I enjoyed how she knew what she wanted and wasn't afraid to let her dude carry her everywhere. I'm tired too Meg, I would also take that ride.
Overall, this was a short and sweet novella. A lovely read when you need a palette cleanser or don't have time to get into something deep.
(ARC provided in exchange for a review)
*also, I did find an error. Tredion, how are you going to kiss it better when you dont know how to kiss?! Eh?!
This short, sweet & spicy story brought me an immense amount of joy. I love a mating bond story, especially one that causes one MC to go into crazy protective, touch her and shuffle off this mortal coil vibes. Throw in a mating bite and you've caught me: hook, line and sinker
Tredion and Meg were the best; it was nice seeing a PoC FMC as well <3. The book was super sweet and super low angst, with just a little bit of tension that was resolved almost as soon as it presented itself. And that dangerous creature in the labyrinth, just confirms the vibe of the story.
I know the Arco showed up in Bell's Accidental Alien Brides series, but I loved how the start to their series, Alien Dating Games, kicked off.
I'm 1000% looking forward to seeing more of these males catch their mates get their HEAs!!
It’s hard to tell because there’s not a lot of actual description or backstory in this book, but I think that Earth sent a bunch of unlikely female Marines to a planet inhabited by anthropomorphized beta fish as bride tributes. They have to survive a maze that’s mostly water and full of monsters while they’re being hunted by “ mate candidates“. I found the characters a little ridiculous… Were these female marines or were they curvy damsels-in-distress? And the fish guys weren’t really like merman they just had all these flowy, psychedelic fins and maybe gills; although it didn’t really explain how they breathe underwater. Their society had to transition from land dwelling to water dwelling as their planet was flooded, but it doesn’t explain where all the water came from… I know this was supposed to be a prequel Novella to a series, but seriously I don’t wanna read the series.
I read this when it was in the Monsters In Love anthology, and I love seeing it as it's own novella with the most stunning cover. This is a fun start to another series I know I'm going to love. As a water girl since I was born, I can not express enough how delighted I was when the Arco were first introduced. Getting to see more of them and their culture in this prequel has me so excited to see more. The dating games are a fun aspect. I appreciate how well January can bring in characterization and make you connect to characters, even in such a short time frame. It's fluffy, it's sexy, it's all fated mates and fun new alien anatomy to explore. I love it a lot.
This story was originally in the "Monsters in Love" anthology.
If you read the "Accidental Alien Brides" series by January Bell, in one of the books the "Arco" sea aliens ask the human women to come to their planet instead of the other aliens' planet. They said the women would be treated like queens. So some of the human women decided to go.
So this is book one with the "Arco" sea aliens as the heroes.
The sea aliens created a game so the alien men can hunt the women to be their queen. The moment he sees her he decides to enter the games. Which isn't fair because he helped created the games.
Of course she likes him back too.
I've liked all of January Bell's books. There is some steam and the alien men want to make their women happy.
This is a spin-off from the accidental alien brides series, and features the human women who were in the breeding laboratory, and who chose to leave with the semi-aquatic Arco. It is helpful to have read the other series, but isn’t imperative.
This is a novella length story, so short, steamy, and sweet. It features Meg, and Tradion, who instantly recognizes Meg as a potential mate. When Meg and the other humans enter a labyrinth to be “hunted” by perspective mates, Tradion knows he has to be the one to claim her.
As I said, this is short, but quite steamy. It’s an instalove and fated mates story, with a rather intriguing hero, and a heroine willing to try out something new. An enjoyable, and quick read for fans of the Accidental alien brides, and sci-fi romance stories as a whole.
This is a short novella which introduces a series though so far the author hasn't released any full length books. Meg has joined the Mating Game with Penny, Grace and Stef. The Arco, an aquatic alien species have rescued them from a breeding ship and gave them the opportunity to participate in the maze to find a mate.
The maze and game creator, Tredion instantly is attracted to Meg and decides to participate. The idea of a hunt for a fated mate is not new in alien romance and I wanted to give it a try. I thought this was okay, a quick read and introduction to the Arco society and how they view their mates. There wasn't alot of figuring out the challenges of the maze as the women get separated and Tredion saves Meg twice.
This was a short and sweet novella that really built up my excitement and anticipation for the Arco’s series. I love the plot line, build the story around an alien maze is GENIUS, I’m extremely intrigued to see how that progresses. I also can’t wait to read Penny’s story, her character is so likeable, and the pop references are executed perfectly, they aren’t cringey at all which is a HUGE plus in my books because that is so hard to pull off🫡 I do wish we got to learn more about the Arco’s and their power dynamics but I suppose that will come as the story develops. All in all, a super cute quick read that sets up the characters and sets the scene a little for the series.
Short lusty novellas are one of my favorites. To be honest, I'm still not quite catched up with the "Alien brides" series, but I've heard that this novella is a little bit connected to it.
The labyrinth was an interesting approach for me when it comes to the mating game. But it is perfect for those series. Meg and Tredion were meant to be together from the first moment they met. I know, I know...It is some insta lust and love, but I truly loved it.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this novella.
***Special thanks to the author for the provided copy. All opinions in this review are my own.***
Oh man, Tredion and his little predicament with Meg. Bless his heart, he fought tooth and nail to keep his desire and attraction in check, but you know what they say - sometimes you just can't fight the mating bond.
This short story is like that first dive into the crystal-clear waters of a tropical island beach. It's like a warm hug for my imagination, leaving me feeling completely fulfilled. And can we talk about January's male characters? They're the epitome of "relationship goals" - always adoring their mates and putting them on a pedestal. I can't help but swoon over them!
This was a sweet (and smutty!) quick read. The whole mating game aspect is fascinating to me and I can’t wait to see more of it in future books.
Tredion and Meg were so sweet together! He’s obsessed with her from the first moment he sees her, and wants her to be safe and loved. Meg is definitely freaked out by the labyrinth and the sea dragon, but she sees how wonderful Tredion is.
The cuddly sea dragon was a nice and hilarious touch! I really like it. Can’t wait to get to know the rest of the women and the competitors!
That was my very first book by January Bell so I was pretty excited.
But goddamn.
It was so good y’all!! I loved the characters, the plot line and the maze was so intriguing!! I‘m pretty excited about this series and the world building was pretty interesting so I’m eager to know how it will progress.
If u love an obsessed alien and labyrinth games this is it!!
All in all it was a pretty cute (+smutty) and quick novella to read and i really enjoyed it. I definitely will be reading about the other humans!
What a quick fun read! I cannot wait to see the short novella's about the other girls and how they are found by their alpha protector mates. You will love all the characters and their dynamics especially of Meg and her Acro Alien Male. You get so much in such a short story, but because I am greedy I felt like it could have been longer and given me more. I am hoping once all the girls get out of the games, they will come back all together and continue this story on an alien planet. I am vested in how this series turns out because I really did enjoy this steamy short number.
so this book had so many issues. not only was it so short it could likely be considered a short story, not even a novella, but mainly it had problems with names. It changed the name of one girl two or three times. the author might benefit by making a note with names, physical features and books/series the character is part of. To help keep it straight. It drove me a bit nuts. Also some lead up would have helped. you are thrown into the end of a story. the beginning and middle are missing. I know it was intentional but it read as sloppy. good premise terrible execution.
I zipped through this cute short alien romance story that is about Meg and Tredion the labyrinth maker. This is an instant romance as Meg's adventures is told on her experiences in the labyrinth. We're also told of Tredion instant attraction toward Meg and that because of him being a lowly maze maker he's given up any hope of her being his mate. When fate gives Tredion the chance, will he find Meg before another can claim her? I volunteer to read and review this enjoyable story.
