“Maybe you should avoid me tonight.” His arm slipped around my waist and I was drawn into his chest. “If I only have this one night with you, the last thing I’m going to do is stay away.”
Kia Valentines had always accepted the fact that she was a nerd, a nobody. It was a badge she wore with honor, until the day she saved Claudia DeLorenzo’s life and lost herself. When offered the chance to shed her identity for a single night, Kia never believed it would change her life. It was one night. It meant nothing, or it shouldn't have. But that single night turned out to be her undoing when she finds passion in the arms of the one person she can never have.
Adam Chaves was more than just a gorgeous face, he made her laugh, but more importantly, when he looked at her, she felt like the most beautiful girl on earth. But Adam has no idea that Kia was the girl behind the mask and Kia has no intention of telling him. But a secret could only be kept if no one else knows about it. Claudia knows and she wants something Kia isn't willing to give in order to keep it.
Will Kia succumb? And just how far is Claudia willing to go to get what she wants?
Right... Ok. I loved this! Airicka Phoenix had me at The Fire Games (or was it Octavian's Undoing?) and she got me exicted for Finding Kia. Our girl is a hilarious, sarcastic nerd that's almost too much to handle sometimes. Kia's used to being invisible, and it's a wonder she and Nessie- her only friend and total heart breaker in the school -ever got together. But they did, and it's a nice relationship. Her parents are divorced, and she lives with her mom and the girlfriend. I like the mom, and I like Joanne. They're their own individuals in the story, but are still super supportive to Kia, which is always important.
One day, Kia saves Claudia, the most popular girl in school, from turning into roadkill, and in return gets invited (forcibly, I might add) to one of her infamous parties. At work, she turns into a total clutz and danger magnet due to the hotness level of a particular customer. When she goes to Nessie's house to study, she tells her all about the party invite and then finally meets her older brother when he comes home. Adam Chaves. And the customer from her job. She's totally embarrassed, but what's worse- he recognizes her! (Or is that really so bad?) It's accident after accident with her as she can't seem to control herself (or her limbs) whenever he's around. And yet he never once looks at her in a negative way. If anything, he seems amused. And he calls her Nena.
"Kia," I corrected him. "My name-"
"I know," he said. "I haven't forgotten."
Right. "You just called me Nena." Yeah, I was so not impressed.
He rolled a pink tongue over his teeth. "It's Spanish."
I arched an eyebrow. "For another girl's name?"
He laughed, shaking his head. "For baby."
That scene deserved a group jump... It's a great moment for her, and when Friday comes, she goes to the party despite her many attempts at trying to get out of it, and what do you know? She runs into Adam. And when Claudia announces that the whole point of the party is to have a date for the night, she makes the girls choose among the boys' ties scrambled up in a bowl. Kia gets Adam's tie (eeekkk!) and even fights Claudia for it when the hostess tries to go back on her own rules of sticking with what you choose and not switching out.
You can't switch ties with the others.
You can't reveal your identity.
You can't kiss.
You can't leave.
You can't take another girl's date.
She and Adam have a great time together, but when he mentions that he might like another girl, she painfully tells him to give her a chance. Adam tells her he wants to give her a chance, and after a night of fun, they kiss. But she knows that he would never want her if he found out what truly hid behind the mystery, so she tells him to give that other girl a chance and leaves before the party ends.
It's a new day, and she's miserable. It's torture seeing Adam, but when she tries to return the tie to his house via the mail door, she runs into him with nothing but a towel on and ends up hanging out with him- I mean, after he dresses, of course. But hey! She got to see a little something-something when he walks up those long stairs! He catches her watching, too, and teasesingly offers to drop the towel.
Damn that boy is seriously fine...
*cough cough*
During their hang out, she says something that makes him look at her a little harder, but he doesn't pursue it. It's a continuous dance like this afterwards, and eventually, Claudia comes up, reprimanding her for breaking the rules. She dogs on Kia's self esteem, and after hearing it from Miss Priss herself and feeling the way she does because of Adam, she decides that she's had enough with being invisible.
"I think I want people to notice me a little. I mean, I'm getting older and I can't go out into the world looking the same way I did when I was five. You know?" I looked up at her. "I think this might be good for me."
Joanne nodded slowly. "Well, all right then. You know your mom and I will support you in whatever you decide to do."
Again, I thought the adults in her life were really supportive and attentive, while still allowing her her own freedom of things. So now Kia's got this whole new makeover (Nessie totally loved helping) and for her birthday, Nessie surprises her with tickets for the annual carnival's last day. She loves the carnival, but when she gets there, Adam shows up ten minutes later, telling her Nessie got grounded. She's disappointed, but then he pulls out the tickets, revealing that he'd been the one to give Nessie the tickets in the first place. He'd been hoping to use them to take out the mystery girl he met on Friday, but then decided that he'd never find her, and so had forfeited them to his sister.
He asks her to join him, and they have a great time. Along the way, his arm eventually finds its way around her waist, but when they go to play a game, she chooses a green bear, and when he asks why that particular prize, she jokingly says it's color.
"Forest green."
It's hilarious because it was his answer from Friday night, but she realizes too late that she just gave herself away. Claudia shows up because it's like, a rule for all evil biatches to show up when things are going great for the guy and gal, but when Adam ignores Claudia and tries to talk to Kia about what just happened, she refuses to admit anything, and he takes her home, though not before leaving her with a kiss on the cheek.
She has officially fallen hard, and then Claudia later threatens to reveal to Adam that Kia was the girl he'd been with on Friday. Kia doesn't want him to know for fear of being rejected, but when Claudia says she'll tell unless Kia let's her have Adam, she refuses and decides to tell him the truth herself. Everything is going great again, but when she discreetly asks Nessie how she'd feel if a friend were to date her brother, Nessie tells her that she'd hate them both; her brother for lusting after her friend, and her friend for using her to get to her big brother.
Ok, right there I was little iffy about Kia's train of thought after what just happened. I'd like to believe that Nessie knows Kia enough to reallly know that she would never do something like that. Kia, however, freaks at the thought of losing the only true friend she has, and so when the opportunity to tell Adam the truth comes up, she balks. Even after Claudia tells on her and Adam approaches her, she refuses to tell him.
"Leave me alone, Adam."
His eyes narrowed. A muscle flexed along his jaw. "That's not going to happen. You can hide all you want, Kia. But I'll find you."
He meant it. There wasn't a shred of doubt in my mind.
I shook my head. "If you care about Nessie, you won't."
With that, I walked away from him.
*****
I liked the beginning and how the characters were introduced, but to be honest, the beginning was a little slow for me. I was like, "Show me the money-!"cough"-I mean, Adam!" Her sarcastic remarks were hilarious as hell, but in the beginning, they sort of got a little repetitive, but then Adam came along and then her sarcasm was funny again. I mean, seriously, she seems like she has a sarcastic remark for everything, but I do, too, so what am I talking about?
This kind of setup is always fun to read, and I like Phoenix's style of writing. Kia is a cool chick, like the other girls that I've read about so far. I loveee Adam, as well as the name, 'Adam', since there's a fae prince named Adam from Moning's Highlander seriesbutanywayyyysss! lol Every time Adam and Kia entered the pages together I'm sure I looked like this to my family:
I recommend this YA novel to those who aren't afraid of French kisses among folks, girls with sharp tongues and drama that makes you squeal (oh, was that only me? hmm) and did I mention that Adam is seriously fangirl worthy? No? Well, yeah. He is. XD AND THE SECOND BOOK'S ALREADY OUUUUTTTT.
Update: I realized it might be bit until I can read the FINAL FINAL version of this...and since the ending (which i was hoping would be slightly different AIRICKA - anyways hasn't changed from other's reviews) i am going to keep my review up and post statuses when I can read the FINAL FINAL copy :D
I was asked by Airicka Phoenix to do an ARC in exchange for being awesome… I mean writing a review, but mostly because I like to think I am awesome but not really. So anways! Honesty is the best policy, especially for books, maybe not so much to your mom when she makes some bizarre new recipe that she is all gun-hoe about, but in reality taste like dirt, and might possibly have some dirt in it, that is the time to lie your ass off for so many reasons but not right meow. And no way was my opinion altered because of this totally awesome honor, and it is a totally awesome honor to be asked to do this, and if you think otherwise then you might be a butthead, so take that!
Moving on!
Song Choice: “Within You” by David Bowie, “Titanium” Sung by Sia, Song by David Guetta, “Giving Up the Gun” by Vampire Weekend, and “Honestly” by Cartel now all these songs go along with a certain part of the plot, and I am going to take a look see in my not so extensive itunes collection for another song that I feel exist somewhere because there is another huge part that I want to exploit in this book (cause I loved it). God I kinda hate myself for this but yeah I am going to do it, “Just the Way You Are” by Bruno Mars cover by Boyce Avenue
First thoughts: Well I guess I should warn you Airicka and I have this unofficial battle going on, I try to figure out –if or if not she is using paranormals in her books, and if she is what they are, welp kids I tried my best not to do that with this book, good thing I did) This isn’t paranormal, but HEY HEY YOU paranormal fan that is walking away, well clicking away you get your ass right back here! I am a pararnorm junkie, like it’s a problem, but this book was fantastic and it should be read by all I am still watching you paranorm fan that thinks I looked away and is trying to run away! This book was HI-larious, like it was a problem, I have explosive laughter, what does that mean? It means when I laugh people on the other side of the country could probably hear me, I laugh and I laugh LOUD. This book had so much humor, but it was mixed with a combination of serious issues as well, and some super awesome romance that literally made me swoon. LITERALLY.
Thoughts on Plot: This book moved incredibly fast and I didn’t even realize that I was getting near of the end of it until I looked down at my progression and I was like WAIT, WAIT WHAT?! HOW DID THIS HAPPEN, I was here now there, and and and and there has to be more. Truth be told there is a good chance I am still looking around my computer seeing if there is more hidden somewhere. While the first half of this book had me coming apart at the seams I was laughing so damn hard, there were serious issues that were presented in this book that I thought were handle very well. (But I will go more into this later in characters) The idea was like Cinderella, meets, Jane Eyre, meets Goddammit I thought of another one but now I can’t remember…. Hmm it will come back to me so if I randomly shout something (it will be in all caps that is me shouting at you) but it had twist of its own, and it was a fun read like I mentioned already eight times with serious themes as well. In Moby Dick (yeah I just went there) Captain Ahab states we all wear pasteboard mask (how do I remember this because it was a shining – aka horribly embarrassing moment for me in my American English 300 level class – shining moment in my college experience). That is how I saw this book for the most part, we hide behind mask to protect ourselves, and this book was adeptly named Finding Kia, when this book was really about finding Kia. I loved every moment in this book because it wasn’t just about high school drama (not that super-duper annoying kind where you want to kill the characters – trust I will get to them soon but a kind you can handle, relate to, and respect), it was about not knowing who you are now, but finding that person, to become something more, to become the person you always wanted to be. To Find Courage, To Find out what really matters, And to Find yourself.
(did you just feel the power in that moment? I know I did….hehehe)
Characters: Now I don’t know this very often but I find myself doing it more and more, but I don’t know how much I will do it, so don’t get too excited. BUT I casted this book…
Meet Kia:
Say A “How Ya Doin’” to Adam:
Now about these Characters:
Kia: *STUNNED SILENCE………..hang on, I am almost good……okay.* I LOVED HER. Not often do you get (or least in my reading experience) do you get 6 foot tall, incredibly witty, funny, hahahaha I am just laughing thinking about some her scenes, and remarks, anyways, and clumsy MC girls. Even less do you run into ones that wear glasses, no I am not talking about the MC girls that have glasses but only wear them at night and in the morning, no I am talking about all the time, THEN ON top of that awesome-ness she is a geek. That’s my kind of woman! I about died when there was a LOTRs reference. Totally awesome. Anyways HOLY HELL I loved this girl, now she wasn’t one those MCs that are like, oh I am not pretty I am quite plain but really every guy in the world actually thinks she is the hotness thing since the Sun. No she goes through her list of flaws, and she does have flaws, hell we all do, I dare even say that I do. (which I am not actually that conceded I do have a lot of flaws, I know this I am just trying to be funny so roll with it). She doesn’t act like they aren’t a problem either, here is what I loved about this book, it did deal with problems that I don’t care what you say all girls and probably guys have gone through (for guys I am not 100% sure, I was blessed as being born a woman well besides one week every month – gross I know whatever but everything girl is thinking the same damn thing right now!) And not once does Kia falter from the extraordinarily amazing person that she is. Things are dealt with in a very well done manner, I can’t say wait because of spoilers but I can say thumbs up Airicka. Now Kia’s personality like I mentioned she is sooo soo funny! But more than that she is really relatable, and easy to like. She is also a 3D kind of character (which means there is more to her than meets the eye, there is more than one side to her.) Wow. Seriously wow. I loved her, and she is completely selfless…oh Kia.
Adam: SWOON. That is all. Seriously holy hot guys that have more depth to them than the “me man, you woman, you pretty woman even better grunt grunt” and I know a lot of book boyfriends, I mean book boys aren’t entirely like that but it’s not often do we get the MC being a sort of not perfect character, and while Adam is totally swoon worthy on the outside, it was the inside I liked. Though he was a bit daft (I like to pretend I am British sometimes), I still loved him, and oh the things he says! He is one smooth talker, and while there were times I was questioning his personality only because of other characters I truly believe that he is a good guy, and turns total Alpha male at the end. LOVE IT! But I don’t have too much on him as this book was mostly about Kia (shocking I know, what with the title and all ;)) Nessie (Van- as Adam calls her) – She was an interesting best friend, while these two are total opposites, there aren’t many times that I question her friendship with Kia I feel like she does genuinely cares about Kia, and does enjoy being her friend, it’s not some weird pity thing. But her morals? Ethics? Are a bit strange…whatever to each their own.
Claudia: narrows eyes…. I don’t like you. Well I don’t think I was supposed to anyways buy yeah. That is all about her.
The ending: Grr. I want the next one now thank you Airicka.
Finding Kia…where do I begin? Amazing story, incredible characters, an experience that I think many of us have gone through. Who am I? How do I fit in? Will he like the “REAL” me?
Kia is one of my most favorite characters of Airicka’s. With a quick and witty sense of humor, some of the lines that she comes up with literally had me laughing out loud. She’s smart and kind of a loner. But not in an unhappy or uncomfortable sort of way. Or at least, she thinks…
She has her bestie. Nessie Chaves is the best friend that you would NEVER imagine Kia having. She’s cute, kinda superficial, not a thinker like Kia. But somehow, they work well. I think it’s the whole opposite attracts thing. Kia keeps Nessie focused while Nessie reminds Kia to have some fun. I love Nessie’s sense of style and the way she cares about Kia.
And then a twist in the story. An act of kindness throws Kia into a situation that she never saw coming in a million years. A chance encounter at a party with “that guy” throws her down a path of self-discovery that’s refreshing and encouraging to read about. Reminds me so much of similar thoughts that I think played through a lot of our heads during high school.
So, who’s “that guy”? Introduce a one Mr. Adam Chaves. HOLY WOW!!! Hot book boyfriend alert!! Adam’s the package…smart, athletic, sexy….did I mention sexy? And yes, you are reading this right…a member of the Chaves family aka Nessie’s older brother. See the complication yet?
Without giving too much away, Kia’s story is one that will stick with you. For so many reasons.
Airicka’s putting out a good message…find yourself, love who you are no matter what others think, but be willing to be daring and adventuresome…you NEVER know what or who you might find…
Five incredible stars…anxiously awaiting the next installment in the Lost Girls Series.
I was given an ARC copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review:
Oh.Em.Gee!!! I just finished this book and I really have no perfect words to describe how I feel right now. Before I start, I just have to say...Why'd it have to end like that??? Okay, I get the whole cliffhanger, lol, but Airicka, be prepared for me to stalk you until I have the 2nd book in my hands!!!
Okay, where to start? I swear to you that Kia is me, or was me, in high school. I felt awkward and out of place, didn't want attention drawn to myself and yet I wasn't as ugly and as awkward as I thought I was. And all it took was the attention of a guy to draw me out. Kia is no different. I absolutely loved her and her inner thoughts. What a sweet girl she was and she was so lost, still is, trying to find who she really is. I loved her sarcastic remarks and her fiery temper. I don't believe there's another book I've enjoyed as much as I did this one, or a main character. I found myself smothering laughs into my pillow (as to not wake the hubby) and unable to put the book down. Seriously, this is the first book I haven't been watching my read progress in and it ended WAY before I was prepared.
Adam is just...perfect. I can't even come up with a descriptive word that works better for him. He's sarcastic, humorous, tender, romantic, sexy and has a temper that isn't scary, but just plain HOT. (If you want to know more about that comment, go read the book!!) I can't even pick a favorite scene with him in it, all of them are yummy!
Congratulations, Airicka, you've outdone yourself yet again. You're gonna have fans falling all over themselves to get to a copy of this book. And once they've read it, I suggest security...LOTS of security, lol...cuz we're all gonna want that book #2 ASAP!!!
Would I recommend this book to others: Most definitely!!! (Though I did think about saving Adam for myself.) Appropriate for 14 and under: yes Sexual content and language: little to none
I finally understand the whole cover concept on this book, but I'm not going to say why I understand it, ya'll will see why when you read the bookie. Normally when I highlight things on my kindle I go by the markings in order but with this book I think I may have to jump around because my feelings were just HOLY S***!! you know? Right, okay so Kia the damn girl needs confidence I mean I thought I had issues in high school but this girl takes it to a whole new level, "it's nothing! I just... Ugh!" I kicked viciously at the pile. "I hate everything about myself." Well Kia hun that's not what you told us in the beginning you said your 'girls' had promise, "now I wasn't about to win any wet t-shirt contests, but the girls were pretty nice, if I did say so myself." I mean seriously hun you just need to use what God gave you and work it not pity yourself what are we in kindergarten? "Right. Jason'll take one look at me and hit the doors. No thanks." Also Adam doesn't really make the situation any better he's a cocky one ladies, "I'm a doer." Ignoring my scowl, he storlled offhandedly towards me, his hands tucked casually in his pockets. "And it's my experience that only guilty people, or nervous people have that many... accidents. So either you robbed a bank, or you like me." I mean seriously he's really cocky I mean I wouldn't mind ogling his endowments, "I could accidently drop the towel if you like." Sweet Jesus do it! I mean Adam and Kia they just need to trust each other and Adam they boy sometimes confuses me it's like he wants Kia, and then he doesn't you know? That was just confusing he needs to make up his damn mind, and Kia the girl needs to stop thinking everyone is doing s*** out of pity, "why? Because you think I need a pity date like Nessie did? God, Adam!" I'm just hoping in the next book Adam makes the right choice and it's not with the bi*** Claudia because let me tell you what she needs a damn reality check and I have two fists that don't mind giving it to her. Adam is also persistent so let's hope he means what he says, "that's not going to happen. You can hide all you want, but I will find you, Kia." Promises, promises Adam.
Lets start with the cover.. This has to be my favorite of Airicka's book covers. I truly enjoyed this book.. I even put down the one I was reading because this cover was calling my name.. I love Kia, Adam & Nessie. I laughed, and totally engrossed with what was happening I could not put it down.. The plot moved pretty fast and I was surprised when I reached the end. Needles to say I can't wait for more.
Ella no necesita introducción. Are you kidding me? Muchas gracias, Airicka.
I was given the book by the author herself for an honest review.
I can't believe how this book is ending... I mean... seriously Airicka?? x'D Now I have to wait for the second book and even an hour would seem too long to wait for...... Here my opinion about the whole book.
Cover I LOVE that cover and it makes totally sense regarding the content. I mean I've read so many books where the cover just doesn't make a sense, but here it does! Wonderful!
Content Finding Kia is kind of a Cinderella story, where I have to say that the Cinderella movie story book thingy isn't really mine, so I liked Cinderella not that much than other stories. But Finding Kia is soo wonderful and a new and modern telling about a smart clumsy idiot (xD) who's meeting her crush Adam at a party (where everyone has to wear a mask). The whole story is so sweet and awesome told I was just soaked into. Kia is so clumsy and she interprets every word of the people around her, that I could be her... actually Kia is me (joking.. xD but we have so much in common.. .. gosh.. xD even that clumsy thingy^^). I love how the tense of the story is increasing from page to page. I read FK on my phone.. and every once in a while I looked at the percentage of what is left for me to read...^^... I was worried at 80% (I though "NOOO.... NOT JUST 20%!!!!")... but I was so surprised on the last page.... Ö_o... I haven't realized while reading, how much I was reading and how fast I was going through the book in these last 20%.^^ The end came too fast... v_v''... But it was sooo wonderful! I won't miss any word of that story.
Characters Kia ~ Like I said... I'm totally like her. haha Clumsy, smart (hopefully ö_O'' haha) and additionally to that over-interpreting everyones words.. xD I adore her and she's a special place in my book heart! I want to read more of Kia soon! *0* Adam ~ .... Adam..... Adam.... *sigh*... I have a new book boyfriend peeps!! He's so gorgeous and awesome and in my mind pretty sexy.. x-P I want to read more of him, too! Nessie ~ She's such a lovely person. I think every girl would love to her she as her best friend! Me too. Claudia ~ ........ I could punsh that b*** right in her adorable snake face ''... She's making me a bit aggressive... have you noticed?^^ I don't like her...
Style of writing I just flew to that book. I'm not speaking English as my mothertongue (so I gift you as many grammar mistakes as I can write xDD), but I've understood everything perfectly and like I wrote above I was soaked into the story. Not just because the story was wonderfully told (which is a great part :D), but it is also written in an awesome way.
Conclusion God... My heart is pounding, my breath goes sharp, because the last pages I just had to hold my breath.. xD Airicka? If amazon or goodreads or so would allow me to give 6 of 5 stars you would totally get them (on my blog you will, muhahahaha ♥). So you'll get 5 of 5 Starts from me and great hugs for writing such a lovely book!
Finding Kia by Airicka Phoenix Print Length: 156 pages Publisher: Fire & Ash Publishing (August 20, 2013) I received this book in exchange for a honest unbiased review!
My Review~~~ LOVE!!!! That is the first word that comes to mind as I'm writing this review. ADORE is the second word that comes to mind. This book is a hidden gem waiting to be devoured by its prey. The story reminds me of a modern day Cinderella story with a twist! I was so easily able to connect to the character Kia and Adam that my heart would flutter, break, or beat wildly when theirs did. This is a story of a girl with self-esteem issues that has been invisible most her life that after one random act brings life to whats hidden in her. I am in utmost agony waiting to read Revealing Kia coming out hopefully by the end of the year (2013). I guess I will wait with Kia and Adam to see what the author has in store for us! I can't wait. I have re-read the ending a bunch of times already just so I can re-live the ending again and again. The writing is beautiful especially at the masquerade that I felt as though I was Kia or right beside her in it. Beautiful!!!! What are the lengths you would go to keep the only friend you had? Would you risk the guy that your in love with or a true friendship? How far will the betrayal go? I would recommed this author to everyone! Wow can this author write! I hope this author knows she has a new book stalker and that I plan on bugging her repeatedly for more awesome books to read!
Amazon Book Description~~~ “Maybe you should avoid me tonight.” His arm slipped around my waist and I was drawn into his chest.
But a secret can only be kept if no one else knows about it. Claudia knows and she wants something Kia isn't willing to give in order to keep it.
Will Kia succumb? And just how far is Claudia willing to go to get what she wants?
So I started this book last night and I finished last night!!! It was so addictive that I just cruised through it. It also was a short book and everything is condensed which allowed me to finished in under 2 hours.
I extremely enjoying the MC in this book. Kia was down right hilarious and had such a strong voice. There was a quick mention of her family, which I wish there was more of cause they were SO MUCH FUN!! I loved the part with the dancing. Ha! So Good! Kia's strong personality gave us some good witty comebacks but she also had a very smart head on her shoulders. Being closer to a nerd then the hot girl on campus, I will guarantee that most will really relate to her. I know I did.
Kia's first encounter with Adam was down right hilarious. What a freaking blubbering fool! I was laughing so hard! And the whole time Adam knows exactly what affect he has on her. The best thing.. even the second time they meet is funny. Oh man! This book was so funny and charming and just so lovely. I'm starting the next one right away cause I have to know what's going to happen. I wanted to smack Adam a little bit for being kind of an idiot but I think it kind of added to his charm.
One really great thing that I loved was the mystery aspect. You can lie to yourself as much as you like but every girl has a fantasy where she can be the sexy mysterious woman we want to let out of the cage to get the guy that she wants. And have him head over heels for her. Just knowing that you have his full and undivided attention makes you feel wanted and every girl and woman wants that. This was what made me love this book so much. The feeling of being wanted. Kia is comfortable in herself just the way she is, knowing what her flaws are, but she makes a really good point of what the outside says about a person. And I loved that. A really good and well written novel that everyone will devour..its short and compact but holds a lot of punch!
I highly recommend this book, along with the second as I'm sure it will be just as good. Plus once you finish this one, you will be picking up the next one right away just to see how it all plays out. I know I am. =)

I was given an ARC copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review:
I've loved everything that I've read by Airicka Phoenix and Finding Kia is probably moving to the top. The book was so fast paced that I was in shock when I was done then also started to feel hate for the author at the ending lol. When you read it you will know the same feeling.. The characters were amazing starting with Kia who is alittle nerdy and always feels out of place. Her best friend Nessie is fun bubbly and amazing that sometimes Kia has now idea how they are friends. Nessie's brother is Adam who is HOT and could probably have any girl he wants but of coarse Kia falls for him. Claudia is a gorgeous supermodel style girl who of coarse is better than everyone.(Lets face it we all had girls like that at our school im sure)The book is very unique and very life like that anyone can relate to this book which is amazing. Lets just say Airicka has done it again and cant wait to see where this story goes in the next book.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
When I first started reading this I was not sure what to expect since the girl in the book Kia was so hard on herself. She was if I may say an 'ugly duckling'. She dressed in overly big clothes all the time and never really did her hair or makeup, she was okay with this though. She didn't want to be noticed like all the other girls, that is, well until this dark haired mystery guy comes into her job at the Taco Stand.
When Adam walks into Kia's life she had no idea just how much it was going to change.
We meet Vanessa who is Kia's best friend and the ONLY person who sees her for her true beauty on the inside. In this book there is much bantering with Vanessa and her wanting Kia to go to the most popular girl in schools party. This is where everything that Kia has once known and believed in Changes.
Will Kia stick to being the same old Vanilla girl she is used to, or change herself to catch the eye of a certain Dark Haired guy she is falling for?
This book is a Cinderella meets Mean Girls type of story. Until I started reading Airicka's stories, I was a bit turned off to the whole Young Adult romance genre, but I sped through this story like a freight train.
The main character, Kia, is a smart, loner type girl who ends up head over heels for her BFF's brother and ends up finding more about herself than she bargains for. I don't want to spoil the story, but I will say I am impressed with the depth that Airicka gave the characters in this story. I often felt like I was in the moment with Kia and was biting my lip to see what happened next! It takes a good writer to make the reader feel emotion when reading a story, and Airicka's ability to do this is exceptional.
I can't wait to read the next installment! This is definitely a MUST READ!
I ♥ this book! Kia ... I adore you & your "flaws"! Your attitude is simply refreshing! Seriously, she's accepting that she's not perfect (since HELLO no one is!), & doesn't dwell on things that she can not change. Claudia on the other hand ~ I dub thee villain! Grrrrrr! Adam oh Adam ... I liked you from the get-go!
The kicker for me was the fact that I could not stop laughing! This book flows wonderfully, & it was over before I even realized I had flipped so many pages. (That may or may not have been from watery eyes caused by all of the laughing.) This was my 1st book by Airicka Phoenix, & I am happy to say that I am officially jumping on that bandwagon! LOVE her story, LOVE her characters, LOVE her writing style.....what more can I say???
Oh...yeah...go buy her book & see exactly what I mean!
I found this book to be very enticing. I could not put it down because it brought back memories of my own youth and that of my children. I think back on the mistakes we all make growing up and this book is a great way of making people stop and thing of our choices. The story between Kia and Adam is a very interesting one. I still do not know if Rusty will be one you love to hate or if he will be the good guy in this whole book. I recommend this to to everyone for the great story line and the heartfelt emotions it draws out. Aricka Phoenix is an author that I will follow and read more of her books.
Call be biased because i love everything this woman puts out, everything this woman touches is gold. And this gem is no different. First of all, i think the cover is my fave so far! i thought i loved the Octavian's Undoing cover, but i love this so much more!! There is so much to love about this book. First, there's the cover! second, there's the KICKASS heroine. I love her clumsiness but also this girl has a fiery personality and a sharp tongue, which is handy around that bi-atch of an arch nemesis. And last but not least, i have one word for you -- ADAM *le sigh* Now give me book 2!!!
This was such a nice read. Short but sweet. I really loved both characters. But there was huuuuge cliffhanger in the end,and just for that criminal ending I give 4* stars. It would be nice if book was little longer and standalone, but well... Can't wait for next one...
I received this ARC book to give an honest review.
Let me start off with the dedication. When you read this book, you have to read the dedication do not skip it. I think it is honestly beautiful and goes with the book perfectly.
Torture just torture, but in a good way. The ending is a cliffhanger and I really want to know what is going happen between Kia, Adam and Nessie.
This is one of those stories that you can not help but fall in love with not only the story line but the character. Kia is someone that probably most of us can relate too. She is just an average teenage girl who doesn't dress sexy or in the new style of clothes, doesn't throw on makeup. Finds more interest in school than going to parties. She has her best friend Nessie who is a total opposite of her. But some how they are best friends and it works for both of them. So when Adam ends up showing an interest in Kia she finds it hard to believe. Especially on the occasion that they have crossed paths.
Now here is where the story gets interesting, there is a sweet twist in this story that will have you going COME ON KIA, just let him know how you feel. But if she does could it hurt her friendship? Because with her having feelings for Adam well his sister may not go for it. Not only that it seems someone else has her eyes on Adam and could that complicate Kia's life a bit more? She isn't looking to start drama with anyone, not even the schools most popular girl. I so wish I could write more but if I do there will be spoilers.
Let's just say this is a story you will fall in love with and Adam Chaves is one of those book boyfriends that you just can not help but fall in love with.
Now I have a few funny parts in here that I loved. But this one truly had me cracking up. This is where Kia is talking about running. "If you saw me running, you had better follow because one of two things were happening, one, the world had ended and there was only one roll of toilet paper left, or two, I was getting chased by zombies. Otherwise, this ass was hustling for nothing."
Kia Valentines is a tall, nerdy, quick-witted teenager who doesn't mind the fact that she's never had a boyfriend, or that she's a total dork. She's never really noticed guys anyway (and prefers to go mostly unnoticed around other people), and as far as being a total dork? She's proud of it. Kia's unapologetic attitude for who she is may possibly be the most refreshing thing about her. Then, of course, we get the girl-meets-boy, and Kia turns to goo. Complete, utter goo. And who can blame her, considering what Adam looks like. Only one problem – he's her best friend's brother. What's also refreshing is he falls just as hard for Kia, and isn't afraid of it. He's not the typical book boyfriend (okay, so technically he never is the boyfriend in this book).
Airicka Phoenix has a great knack for writing characters, and even though I've only read one other book of hers (besides this series), I feel confident in saying it's her understanding of the characters that is what draws me to wanting to read more. The characters feel like real people; Kia is a part of me, I see so much of myself in her (I'm sure that's a good thing). But the other characters are relatable, and even the bully isn't one-dimensional, evil and mean and bitchy for the sake of it because the story called for a bitch character.
The book ends in a bit of a cliffhanger, and I waited until the second book was out until I read more than a dozen or so pages. But once I started reading it for good, I was hooked, I couldn't put it down. I finished in less than three hours, and man, did I laugh a lot! Some was at things meant to be funny, others at things I recognized in myself ten years ago. Not everything is hand-delivered to you, so if you don't like having any mystery about details, this isn't your book. You're meant to think. But Kia and her antics (just her klutziness alone) will have you laughing, and she is the reason for reading this book.
I think this is my favourite book by Airicka that I have read so far. It was just brilliant! I utterly and truly loved it!
I loved every single thing about this book but I especially loved Kia. Without a doubt my favourite character of Airicka's. She has such a great sarcastic wit. Nearly everything she said had me laughing out loud. Right from the first page I was highlighting sentences that I loved. But bless her soul she is such a klutz I think that just made me love her more though. Can I be friends with her? Pretty please? I related with her so much. I know how it feels to feel like you don't fit in or that the guy you like won't like you for you. I empathized with her and I got why she felt like she had to change her appearance. What surprised me though was how she dealt with certain situations. I wasn't expecting her to be so spunky. I doubly loved this about her. At one point I almost shouted out loud "You go girl!". The love interest, Adam, I also loved. Swoon personified right there. He was such a great character. Him and Kia just fit. They are perfect for each other.
I have two complaints however. It was waaaay too short!! I never wanted it to end!! I was so sucked in I finished it in no time. I tried so hard to savor it and make it last as long as possible but I couldn't. I just had to know what was gonna happen next and before I knew it I was finished :( My other complaint? The ending! Airicka how could you end it like that?! That's just cruel! If I bribe you with cookies will you give me the next book? ;)
Overall this is a fantastic book with a great message. It's about learning to love the real you, to be brave, and to take a shot at life. You never know what's waiting around the corner. I am eagerly awaiting book 2!
Have I ever told you how much I love Airicka Phoenix? Well if you do not already know she is becoming one of my all time favorite authors and never fails to impress me.
The uniqueness of this book captured my attention from the start. From Kia's humorous banter and over thinking everything to Nessie's completely out there character always living on the edge. Adam is quite another character because I never know what he's thinking at any given time. What I would give to get inside his head - especially if he were to drop that towel!!! Adam's just so sexy and laid back most of the time, keeping his expectations high for a girl both smart and funny. Claudia is one character no one wants to run into unless you are one of her 'Barbie' look alike followers. With her beauty queen attitude and manipulating skills; she could be the next evil prom queen and quite possibly become Kia's worst nightmare.
Never in her wildest dreams does Kia think she could be the hero. When the choice is made for her, she finds putting her own life in danger to save another is not all that heroic! Even moments such as saving another could cause her life to take an unexpected turn. One of which Kia has no intention of taking. That is until Nessie, her best friend, talks her into going to the one 'Party' that just might change her life.
Can Kia be mysterious and flirtatious behind the mask? Or the smart and funny girl Adam Chaves would love to meet? Will revealing her true identity cause her reality to come crashing down? Or will the secret mysterious identity behind the mask become her happily ever after?
Finding Kia was a fast-paced teen, coming of age story of a beautiful teenage girl with insecurities who finds herself learning more about who she is and who she wants to become. Yes...like any other teenage girl, trying to figure out who she is and wants to be...in high school, mind you, where it can be very difficult to deal with...wears a mask every day. But, for Kia, she had her moment to become someone else for the night with her dream guy. Enter Kia's dream guy, Adam, and he is just the beginning of Kia's cycle of change...it sure looked like he ignited this whole change in Kia. However, there is always the popular mean girls that enjoys making life miserable for other girls they perceive as "nobodies." Between her struggle with Adam after that fateful night, her conflict with Claudia and being a good friend with Vanessa, how much more complicated can Kia's life be? Now, that's up to Kia to figure out. That means, you have to read this to get a feel for Kia's dilemma.
I'm not one to spoil books for anyone, so let's just leave it at that.
I loved it! I was already taken in with the beautiful cover, and I was intrigued with the synopsis. It felt all too real, especially when Airicka's characters are high school students...I loved her well developed characters! The story/plot itself flowed and kept me wanting more! Finding Kia touched on issues that many teens have dealt with and deals with everyday, then and now, such as: bullying, just to name one.
Finding Kia by Airicka Phoenix is the first book in the Lost Girl Series. It is an awesome book with fantastic characters that I fell in love with. It had my attention from the very beginning.
Kia Valentine is a high school girl who is simple and keeps to herself. She isn’t like the popular girls at her school who love to be the center of attention. She is more on the nerdy side. Kia has one friend that she is close to and hangs out with and that is her best friend Nessie Chaves. They are total opposites.
Kia does something that changes the popular girl’s attitude towards her. To repay Kia for what she did, Claudia invites her to the Halloween Masquerade Party where she has to wear a costume and a mask. Kia didn’t want to go but her best friend Nessie convinces her that she should.
The night of the Halloween Party is when things change for Kia. She wasn’t expecting her best friend’s brother, Adam Chaves, to show up. Through out the party, Adam didn’t know that the girl he was talking to and flirting with is Kia. Will he ever find out who the mystery girl is behind the mask?
As I get to the end of the book is when I realize it ends in a cliff hanger. Thanks Airicka! The suspense is killing me! Now I have to wait for the sequel to come out so I can find out what happens.
Airicka Phoenix has done an amazing job with Finding Kia. I am really looking forward to reading the sequel in the Lost Girl Series. I definitely recommend this book to my friends to read.
I just adore Finding Kia! I love Kia!! Her biggest weakness and I think biggest struggle through most of this book is seeing what she believes to be flaws as just that... flaws. She like most any woman will be self concious of their most precious traits that makes them the woman they are... their hair Color, eye color, having their more dominate features resemble their fathers, and the fact that they believe that that are a nerd or are not desired or could never be desired by a man they have interest in. Its all garbage!! Everyone is uniquely beautiful and eventually Kia starts to realize just by dressing herself up a bit isn't going to change her on the inside. Kias friend Nessa is amazing she is bold, beautiful, has an edge and brassyness that Kia admires but is also afraid of when it comes time to reveal something that will upset Nessa her one and only friend. Adam, ahhhh Adam... he is "That Boy!" every woman I know has had a boy at one time or another be the one who if he says hi you mumble and trip over your words like a bafoon! The kind of boy that is your kryptonite you would do anything to be close to him but not close enough where in your wildest dreams would anything happen. I read this book in like an hour and a half my plan was to go to sleep early but I just couldn't set it down!! I am wound for the next book and I will have to patiently wait or there is always the email Airicka everyday to see how the progress is coming ;) For now though I think I may just reread. Happy reading friends!!!
Please know that I received Finding Kia from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Finding Kia is an updated Cinderella story. Kia has had a difficult childhood culminating in the divorce of her parents. Kia now lives with her Mom and her Mom's significant other.
Kia believes herself to be an ugly duckling. She hides her body in bulky sweaters and concentrates on her studies earning her reputation at her school as a book nerd. She has just one friend - a best friend who is not scholarly and who is popular with the boys - the exact opposite of Kia.
Then... one evening an obscenely cute, dark-haired boy notices her at the Taco Stand where she works after school, and her life will never be the same again.
This is a YA romance that adults who are not looking for a deep or complicated read would also enjoy. The story drew me in from the beginning and kept my attention thru-out. Multiple times while reading the book, I wanted to shake Kia... then I remembered that she was a teenager meant to drive adults crazy. I was a bit disappointed in the cliff-hanging ending... I'll definitely have to check out the next book which I'm sure was the author's intent :-)
I would highly recommend this for the female YA audience and also for women who are craving an enjoyable beach or night-time read. I give it 3 1/2 stars... as I'm 60.
However, I'm pretty sure the teen readers will rate it much higher.
I adored it, devoured it. My only complaint - I want more! Seriously Ms. Phoenix..when will I get more?
Kia was wonderful. She was funny. Quirky.. I loved her thoughts. She seriously made me laugh out loud several times. You have to get to know this fabulous character. Add in her BFF and only friend. (Nessie) I am ready to go hang out with them. (Just seemed like my kind of people's!) The extremes and personalities in the book keep you engrossed. Claire and her posse - ugh! Then of course the guy. Not just any guy either .. The perfect one. The one romance novels are written about. Adam. Repeat with me.. ADAM! He was funny. Flirtatious. Beautiful. The story unfolds and you are captured. Kia and Adam.. The mystery.. The whole plot pulls you. Saving someone is the right thing to do, right? What happens when the girl you think you are has the chance to be the girl you want to be? Hidden away, in secret.. Would you be bold? Would you be without fear? Would it be worth it? Hmmmm! Hiding behind a mask allows freedoms. When the truth is revealed and the cards are on the table, does anyone win? Wow.. OMG! You must read it, get caught up in the games. I questioned if playing was a good thing or bad.. Would the risk be worth it? I so cannot wait for YOU to find out. Airicka Phoenix, loved it! Now did I mention I am ready for book two please and thank you! ❤
