This volume has four stories, the first one is about an unfaithful man haunted by his dead wife and paid the price, the second story about a young man haunted a beautiful woman and her pretty maid who actually were a pair of snake demons is a re-telling based on the Chinese folklore The White Snake. The third story is about a well-respected monk falling into obscenity and insanity after the sudden death of a beloved young squire (homosexuality wasn't uncommon among monks back then).
These are the stories I enjoy, and the themes of karmas and the Buddhist undertone is strong. Plus I have a huge thank you to the translators and editors who added a lot of footnotes alongside the stories so readers can learn more about the cultures and practices of the time these stories were first created and published.
The fourth story isn't very interesting though.
More stories from this collection:
The story about a monk and his young son spending the night outside of a temple and were disturbed by the ghosts of dead samurais and their lord? Damn I'd seen similar stories before but it's still interesting!
Another story that I like: in which a man left his wife and the village they lived in to seek his fortune, but after seven years of separation and a civil war in between, the man finally made his way back to his home only to be cheered by his weary wife, who .
These are the stories I enjoy, and the themes of karmas and the Buddhist undertone is strong.
