In Lilith Callicotte’s profession, being able to indulge in a little fantasy was a plus. Not much that came out of her pretty little mouth was real, but then again, what did her rich, playboy clientele care about truth? Lilith made lying more than an art – it was her life. But as lies often go, it only took one client asking too many questions for everything to unravel.
Kristina M. Sanchez is an Orange County California native. She currently resides down the street from Disneyland and is the mother of two pain in the behind cats.
Let me start by saying that I was one of the pre-readers for this novella, so you can either take this review at face value (and I'm honestly writing it as such) or see is as biased. Trust that there were several mini arguments *cough* plot discussions *cough* accompanying the process.
Kris is one hell of a writer, and her way with words is truly unique, special and more often than not, touching.
In Duplicity we are faced with Lilith, a young woman who along with her two best friends, suffered a trauma as a high school student. As life takes us in so many different directions, so have Lilith's life, and she chose to support her friend in her studies, as well as emotionally, by working the oldest profession in the world. Trey sees through her facade. The rest is in the story.
Novellas are most of the time very lacking; whether in plot details or emotional depth or even how well we get to know the characters. Duplicity, in my opinion, is not lacking. We get the good, the bad and the ugly, and we get it all wrapped up in a lyrical story, beautifully developed and very well written.
I read a review for this book on a blog site and this book came highly recommended from a friend so I thought I would give it a try. It looked intriguing but I wasn't one-hundred percent sure if I was going to really like this one or not. Right away I noticed how very good the writing was and I became completely absorbed in the tale. I looked up the author and was pretty shocked to see that this was her first book. Well, I'd already known that from the review I read but once I started reading I thought that must be a mistake. Surely this can't be the authors first book since it is so very well written but yep it was and I truly hope she will continue to write. I can only imagine how truly great this author can become after such a fantastic debut
This review has been very hard for me to write. Normally I love to drone on about all of the things that I find awesome in a book such as the characters, the storyline and uhm...well I can't really say anything else. See what I mean? This is a hard one to write for one simple reason. I don't want to give anything away and I cannot find a single way to address anything that I would like to without ruining some part of the story for you and this is one story I do not want to ruin. It's just one of those books that you have to experience for yourself. Doing anything less will just ruin it for you.
What I can say though is that this book just felt very genuine to me. I could be in the minority on this but I really think that depends on what type of person you are. Are you the type of person that sees the cup half full or the type who sees it as half empty? I'm the type of person who doesn't care whether it's half full or if it's half empty. I'm happy as long as I have a good cup to get a drink with. So to me the tale felt very real. Even though this tale has been told so many times before, it doesn't really matter. What's important is how the tale is told and this one was done beautifully with such a unique voice. The writing was superb, heartbreaking, tense, heartwarming and sweet. The characters were rich and had a great deal of depth. The story literally kept me glued to my kindle for every single moment that I read.
There was plenty of drama for me in this book (I'm a huge drama junkie when it comes to books, not so much in real life) and it was a bit of a dark tale but with plenty of light around the edges like going into a dark tunnel only to finally reach the light at the end. I'd love to say more, I really want to. There's so much I'd like to discuss about this book but can't. You'll just have to take my word for it or better yet grab a sample and see for yourself. This was actually more of a novella but it felt like a full sized novel to me. I'm extremely happy that I bought this book and I'm very much looking forward to reading more from this author. All in all a great book with plenty of heart and soul!
There aren't enough "stars to fill" to relate how amazing I found this novella to be.
I just finished and HAD to say - Kristina - please! - write something, anything, I'll be pre ordering it then consuming it the second it gets out.
It's been a while since I felt that close and emotional about a book before. I've read many books I really enjoyed lately but this one just had me on edge with a clutched stomach most of it.. I used to get so emotional about books, besides obviously cracking up with laughter I used to tear up on many occasions (which I would denied feverishly if asked about..) life makes us cynical. makes the emotions mean nothing at all. most of the time I can't remember how some of the emotions even feel. This novella just tore me up from the inside. made me realize how much emotions actually mean and how much we sometimes do to escape them. truthfully its sometimes easier and safer without them. anger is much more manageable ;)
Trey and Lilith story on its baseline isn't the most original idea. but it doesn't matter. because I'd say that must of stories had already "being told" somewhere somehow. its all about how it is written and brought to us. what makes the characters as interesting and special as they are. I hate spoilers so I'm going to shut up and let you read for yourselves.
This novella is damn worth reading no matter who you are. just read it and appreciate it.
I'm going to try very hard to review this novella and not the person who wrote it. But that's a difficult thing to do when the author puts so much of who they are in their work. And Duplicity is all Kris. It is everything I have come to expect and admire about her work.
Duplicity--Kristina's first published piece--may be a novella, but there is nothing short about it other than its length. It revolves around the life of its central character, Lilith, and the work she does to support herself and those she loves. This is a story of self-discovery, loyalty, strength, and love. It asks the reader to take a second look at some widely universal opinions on social issues, while managing to avoid being preachy or condescending.
The depth of the characters is impressive; each and everyone of them is relatable. I found myself thinking Lilith could be anyone I might meet standing in line at the store or see out at a bar somewhere. Each personality works together to tell the story of this young woman beautifully.
Kris has a way with words; she has presented the somewhat sensitive topic of Lilith's profession being the oldest profession in history realistically, managing to avoid romanticizing or villanizing it. She directs the reader's focus on Lily's life rather than her job, and constantly challenges them to reconsider any preconceived ideas they may have. She does a fantastic job of telling the story of Lilith.
I have to say I had some preconceived ideas of my own when I started this novella. I've read a lot of Kris's unpublished work, and let's just say the woman knows how to write the sexy times. This being a story about a woman who is a prostitute, one would assume a plethora of sexy times. There are deinately moments of a sexy nature--all beautifully penned--but Kris being who she is, has to go and make this a tale about a young woman with an indominable spirit. Thank you, Kris.
All in all, Duplicity is a novella that reads more like a full-length novel. It is masterfully written. Simple. Unpretentious. Beautiful. The litterary world needs more Duplicity and less 50 Shades.
Though it’s a small novella, Duplicity by Kristina M. Sanchez packs a big punch and is not a story for the faint of heart. If you’re looing for a fluffy, heart warming story this isn’t it, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s a bad thing.
Duplicity is the type of story that doesn’t just tug at your heart strings; it grabs them by the dangling threads and rips them right out of your chest. It’s thought provoking, heart breaking and honest. It’s one of those stories I had to keep tearing myself away from to find something sunny and fluffy to read to break it up, lest I begin to fall into an emotional darkness because the story was SOOOO well written you began to believe it.
Lilith hides her true self from the world around her by disguising not only her physical self in sexy fantasy gear while working her job as a dancer at a seedy club, but also behind the stories she paints of her life when asked by her customers.
Lilith’s regular, Trey, tries his damndest to get her to open up, but she keeps her walls up, never letting a crack mar the façade of the strong willful woman she portrays in public. Throughout the story we see how she has been living her life very one dimensionally in order to protect herself and her friends, Dana and her brother Mal, from a past that threatens to drag them all back to the depths of darkness from which they’ve tried to escape.
A lot of comparison has been made between Duplicity and the movie Pretty Woman, but other than the fact that they share a base story line, there’s not really much that is similar. Duplicity is entirely a story of it’s own and one that everyone should read at least once.
I read the book in one sitting, it was breeze however at most times I was like WTF? Me, personally believe a woman's body belongs to her so she is free to do whatever she wants with it? But selling it is beyond..ughh.. She could have become a stripper..shit she could have pulled a double at McDonald's but to sell it at the age of 20 was like WTF is wrong with you?
Lilith had made peace with her lot in life. She knew that sacrifices had to be made in order for the ones she cares about to be able to go to school, and didn't think twice about it until she meets a curious stranger. Meeting strangers wasn't anything she wasn't used to, however, in her profession it was rare for people to become "regulars", but that is exactly what this stranger named Trey becomes.
"People ask how you are, but they don't want to hear the answer anyway"
Trey is unlike any customer Lilith has ever had. He doesn't make Lilith feel bad about herself, nor does he pressure her to be anyone that she isn't. Trey is like a breath of fresh air for Lilith, except that he has an insatiable curiosity. When they are together, Trey asks Lilith questions about herself. Questions that Lilith may or may not be honest in answering, questions that make Lilith feel uncomfortable, for the answers make her think about things that she has tried hard to leave in the past. Lilith begins resisting the feelings that Trey conjures up, and reminds him of their arrangement in a feeble attempt to push him away. His response is what will make every reader fall for him, if they haven't by this time already.
"I could never pay you what you're worth"
I started reading this book on a serious book hangover. Before this book I had flounced a handful of books for various reasons, but this author writes so eloquently that once I started reading I was immediately sucked into the story. I've purposely left out a ton of details about this story because it's important for the reader to take this journey with Lilith and uncover these things as she does.
Duplicity is the debut novel from Kristina M Sanchez, and it does not disappoint! She writes with the assurance of veteran authors, and is able to tell the story of two unlikely people getting to know one another and accepting each other for who they are. I thought that this story was beautiful and I loved how it was written in a way that does not bash people for choices they have made, but instead stands up for those choices unashamedly by pointing out that as long as two people are consenting adults, the details don't matter. I can't wait to read more from this author!
A tough story, well written. The girl with the hard shell is hiding from her past, protecting everyone but herself. My second time reading, well worth the second look
I picked up this book because I like other stories by Sanchez and this did not disappoint. It's a novella, so just a hundred and change pages long - in order words, a pretty quick read
Honestly, I read this book a few months ago, so this review is mainly based on what's stuck with me over the past few months
- I liked Sanchez's writing style - a little humor here and there, a heart squeezer (or ten) scattered throughout, and the words are just strung together really well - they draw you in and the next thing you know, you're done with the story. I looked up a random line to demonstrate what I mean (the novella is full of lines like this), "She wasn't running, but she was walking fast, as if she could outrun the tears that were stinging her eyes. Regret was a bastard of an emotion." - I liked how Lilith and Trey got to know each other (even though she was all walls up and he paid to spend time with her) and how Lilith, for all her "I don't care what other people think of my profession" demeanor, was full of soft / complicated spots - the conundrum I often face w/novellas is that I sometimes wish that they weren't novellas, but then I like the fact that these intricate stories and beautiful characters come in such succinct packages and I wouldn't want to change that for more words, but sometimes I just want more ... aahhhhh! kinda feeling a little hyde/jekyll-y ...
anyway, Duplicity is short, but long on your mind after you've read the last page
MY THOUGHTS This was the first book I've read from Kristina M. Sanchez and I'll say that I was suprised. I love love love the cover! I have to admit that I do judge a book by its cover. It was a pretty quick read. It was a very well written book. Usually in such a short story, the characters aren't as developed or the plot suffers but thats not the case in duplicity.
Lilith really drew me into the story and found myself devouring it just to see how her story unfold and how she got to where she was.
I really liked Trey. I think he is a true gentleman in the loosest terms. duplicity isn't a typical Romance novel, but I loved it nonetheless.
I got this as a freebie from Amazon, and believe me it's well worth a read. Especially as this is the Arther's first book! It's got drama yep it is on the dark-side but it's written fantastically. Lilith everything that came out of her mouth was a lie, a line from a song, a quote from a book, dialogue from a movie. It didn't matter because it was her fantasies' her escape and truly it was a coping mechanism with what she went through in high school with her "selected friends" Dana and Mal. They needed each other and Lilith took it upon her self to be the provider for her friend in her studies, as well as emotionally supporting Dana. The only way how? by working the oldest profession in the world to date, and that's how she handled her life.
Until she meets Tray who unravelled her and laid her out bare and put her back together like a jigsaw as she opens up to him. A psychology grad just what she needed as he could sieve through her bullshit and understand her actions. And show her she can be loved. A heart felt story and well written.
it is difficult to 'like' a story this emotionally wrenching. it feels awkward to say i enjoyed the story because of the immense difficulty the characters endure, but i can easily say i enjoyed the way their story was told. Kristina does a wonderful job creating characters i identified with on multiple levels, and even though the story itself isn't exactly a new one, she gives the telling of it a hopefulness that other writers may have been unable to convey given similar subject matter.
it is such a natural reaction to certain sexual traumas to withdraw into one's self, especially in our cultural climate of victim-blaming and slut shaming. Kristina handled her story well, and managed to bring Lilith full circle with a healthy future before her.
my only complaint would be that i would love to have seen more of Trey's story. given the novella length, however, i think she did a great job giving Lilith a strong partner.
Its a slow read full of redemption, living through hard times, and prevailing. Lilith is strong for putting up with all she did, supporting her friends and putting them before her, even as she was going through her own shit. Standing up up f or who she is and what she does in her profession, I have to hand it to her: this girl is Strong. I love that strength about her, and the ending too which shows just how much strength she has
I absolutely LOVED this novella. You have the main character and her two best friends who obviously have something hidden in their past but you don’t find out about it until close to the very end. They each deal/dealt with it in a certain way and Lilith, the main character, is still dealing.
In less than 150 pages, the author makes you feel for her characters and you want to know what it was that happened and when and how it will dawn on Lilith that she really hasn’t been coping at all.
The “hero”, Trey (love why he’s called that, by the way) it not your typical in this story, either. I was also glad to read the not so typical relationship between the two.
All in all, if the author’s next book is written in the same caliber, I can’t wait to read it!
When it comes to Kristina's words, I'm instantly drawn in. For those moments in time, I live 'there' with her characters, I feel their pain - and boy did I feel it! - I wanted to shake Lilith until I realized the extent of the damage done to her. The reason was bad enough but Lilith took her reaction to a whole new level and for that I was more than sad, I was worried she wouldn't come out of it. I know she was helped but she had to WANT to do it so that it could be worthy of her. That was in my humble opinion the beauty of the story. Her struggle to realize 'what' she did - and not only 'why' she did - to recognize it, to accept it and to outgrow it
A former reviewer stated that this is a "Pretty Woman" story. There are similarities...but this book shows us the more "ugly" sides of the story.
Short stories aren´t normally my cup of tea unless they are of the funny ones, because I think I need more than 150 pages to relate in any way to a character... I was mistaken in this case! Although it did not take long to read it, at the end of the book I thought I had all the information I needed ! The characters were well drawn, the writing was engaging...a really good job for a first novella!!!
Duplicity is the story of a girl - Lillith - who works as an escort / prostitute in a seedy club. When she meets a new customer, Trey, her carefully ordered world is brought into question.
The characters in this novella were extremely well developed. None of them are perfect, but their flaws are believablle, and ultimately, forgiveable. Even the minor characters are fully fleshed out, which is a pretty impressive feat in a novella.
If you enjoy stories with less-than-perfect characters, an interesting plot, and perfectly written prose, then Duplicity is for you.
That was some fantastic story telling, really enjoyed reading this so much. Wow just WOW for such a quick read you get all the answers to your questions. Such a strong character she is, never putting her needs or wants ahead of her friends. When she deserves to be happy as well and have a future not just a present. To deal with everything after such a painful past at such a young age and be able to somehow survive after her friends dealt with it so much differently. The worst was not to be believed by her own family when she needed them the most. This was a good one for being so short. :)
Duplicity is stunning in it's simplicity. Just the basic thought of treat everyone equally and without judgment. And Kristina Sanchez offers that thought up without preaching in the least. The characters are flawed and yet perfection.
This was pretty woman with much more heart and a lot more depth.
I thouroughly enjoyed this debut novel and hope to see much more from this author in the future.
I've read a handful of fan fiction stories by this author and was pleasantly surprised to learn she had written original fiction. Pull to publish is so overrated.
I very much enjoyed this novella. It feels lacking though in something I can't quite pinpoint... There is a fine line between a realistic and far fetched story and this borders on the far fetched. It's similar to Pretty Woman in a way except the characters are younger.
Reading the description of the book didn't give me any hint at all. So I read it and couldn't really understand or figure the story. But when mystery got open, little story by little, I found this book AMAZING!!! It was so strong. mentally built up till being numb . yeap I figured out till lately in the book.
The complexity and humanity of each character was really well developed. It was an interesting book about imperfect people searching for that one thing that could bring them the happiness they so yearn for. I truly recommend this novella. It was a quick read, one that kept me glued to the pages from beginning to end.
could not put it down! i read it in one sitting and it made me cry!!! loved lilith and my heart just broke for her...ugh, NO SPOILERS!!! just read the book...if you love love stories that arent about the perfect girl with her perfect life this is the perfect story for you...
All i can say is Wow! i just wanted to tell Lilith she was special and needed someone to care for her as well. Trey is my hero for staying with her, not letting her push him away, and loving her slowly.
Very well written; however the detachment Lillith felt from the world around her translated into me feeling detached from the story. The last quarter was the best, IMO. 3.5 stars
I read this in one-sitting on the kindle app on my phone. It was different than the typical story lines I read and very much enjoyed that! I wish there was a way for me to give it a half star more!
