So.... No Game No Life. I first picked this series up because the anime was awesome. Seriously amazing. I loved the anime series, and I thought I would love the light novel series even more. After all, the anime is based off the novels, and I love reading more than watching. I regret to say that I am somewhat disappointed with this volume.
Now, don't get me wrong. This isn't a terrible book. It's just not that good. There were a load of mistakes piled up to the ceiling. I found more than just a few minor grammatical errors. There were formatting issues, random switches between past to present tense, random switches between first to third person without any indication that these were the thoughts of our characters, head hopping, spelling errors, punctuation errors, and incomplete sentences. Basically, the writing in this volume was bad. I don't know if it's due to the translations, or if it's because of the source content, but there were a lot of mistakes that would jerk me out of what was generally an immersive and enjoyable book.
Disregarding the English itself, the story was fun. I still like the anime more, but I didn't dislike the story told here. Sora is an interesting character, and though I feel like he sometimes strays into sue-dom, his general insanity shoves whatever perfection he might seem to have out of the window. Likewise, his little sister, Shiro, is an adorable and intelligent person. I don't think I like Shiro as much as Sora, but that's mostly because I'm not into 11 year old children. While Shiro does act mature for her age, some of the situations she was put in made me uncomfortable. That being said, I enjoyed how in-sync these two were. They have an unusual synergy that I find unusual in a brother and sister - though that likely has a lot to do with my relationship with my sister, which is the antithesis of this pair.
On the whole, I would say this was a decent story that could've been better. The story is interesting, the banter was light, and the characters are off-the-wall intriguing. I will be reading the next volume because, well, why the hell not? I already bought the first three volumes. It would be a waste not to read them. I do hope the writing in the next two volumes are better, otherwise I might drop a series that I was really hoping to enjoy.
First. I don't know if it's the author or the translator. But this book. Is written with a weird. Prose style. With lots of choppy ........ sentences. And ............. excessively long ellipses. It's. Annoying.
The plot.
There are these two kids. Brother and sister. They are the best gamers in the world. Not the best at any one game. The best at everything. Pac-Man. WoW. Civ. They've even beaten Deep Blue. At chess. One day they get sucked. To an alternate universe. Where wars are settled through games. And humanity is on the verge. Of losing. Everything. The two kids must. Take over the human. Kingdom. And become heroes. By winning games.
These kinds of stories. They're called "isekai". It means "Another World". They've been popular in Japan. Recently. They aren't too different. From American fantasy in the 70s and 80s. Thomas Covenant, all that shit. Except. The heroes in isekai stories. Are always computer geeks. Who are really good at. RPGs. Which inexplicably translates to. Mad skillz in. A fantasy setting. Not all these stories are shit. Log Horizon is cool. But this. Is shit.
I loved the story (because it's from probably my favourite anime), but the writing style was atrocious. There were only a couple remarks (in the whole novel) as to who said what in a dialogue. Every ten pages, the translator/editor used a fancy word just to embellish his style a little. This book should've been as colourful and descriptive as the anime, but the writing felt bland (except for the annoying and childish way of writing in Japanese, e.g., "...ngh", "Wha—", etc). But in the end, I loved this story, loved the characters, loved the jokes and loved the references.
Some of you may remember the review I did of the manga version I did a while back. For those who don't want to read it, let's just leave it as "I was not thrilled with that adaptation." I had watched the anime a while back and loved it, but the manga adaptation was a... less than satisfactory imitation. Thankfully, the light novel lived up to my expectations from the anime (though admittedly, I still like the anime best of the three).
I've seen a lot of complaints regarding the writing in this book. The grammar is fractured, and this is full of half-sentences. While I can't say it's my favorite writing style, I can't imagine this having a proper, grammatically correct one either. If you pick this one up, keep in mind that it's full of fragments.
Anyway, one of my biggest complaints with the manga was the amount of fan service. While the light novel has some fan service, it's mostly played up for laughs (much like the anime). There are boob jokes, jokes about age ratings of various "scenes" and so on, but details are largely left out. Those squeamish about dirty jokes might not want to read it, but I think the general population would be fine.
Character-wise, this is pretty good. You have Sora, a guy who's so good at reading people that he hates dealing with others; Shiro, a savant when it comes to games of logic; and Steph, a girl who sucks at games and logic and well, is super gullible.
Following these characters through the logical adventure is impressive, and I would read for that alone. The amount of sarcasm and characters screwing around makes it even better.
I had a good laugh and I enjoyed it, so I'll be reading the second book in the series.
Don't hesitate to pick up this light novel if you liked the anime series. Today I've watched all the anime episodes, and finished by completing this first light novel; you will not be disappointed. Unfortunately due to the change in media, stuff is lost on it's translation to an anime series and the light novel fills in all the little details fans would have after the anime series. Can not wait to keep reading.
No soporte verlas...
Esta fue una experiencia extraña.
Repitámoslo de nuevo. Dieciocho años de edad. Sin empleo. Un cherry boy. Impopular.
…… Un Rey había nacido. Aclamaciones… no, rugidos.
Of the three recently released light novels I read this one was the shortest, but it also had a tighter plot and better pacing. The world building was incorporated into the story without coming off as info dumping or boring (thank you Yuu Kamiya), the characters while not always likable are interesting and complex. A lot of situations that bother me in other series I was able to overlook in this one because they made sense, but more on that later.
No Game No Life is about siblings Sora and Shiro who are shut ins unable to assimilate into society and instead play games all the time. It could be argued they are just escaping from reality, but it’s unclear if the author will acknowledge that so for now I’ll just say they really really really really like games.
They like games so much that when they find themselves in the world of Disboard, where conflicts are solved by playing games, they pretty much feel like this is where they belong. And I have to say, Sora (and Shiro?) seems to thrive in this world. Which is good, because as fun (and potentially creepy?) as Disboard sounds, it needs to be shaken up and Sora and Shiro will definitely accomplish that.
I love Sora and Shiro’s relationship. They are siblings, but it’s shown due to their inability to get along with others and as a result of becoming shut ins, they now have a very dysfunctional codependent relationship. Which I really hope gets addressed in later vols, but considering the fun tone of the book may not happen so fingers crossed.
One thing I hate about Japan is the need to have
Even what happens with Steph (how odd that the three main characters all have names that start with S) didn’t bother me like it usually does in other stories. The author explains why Sora does what he does, and eventually as a result touches on the fact that he doesn’t know what love is. In fact, he has no idea what love feels like. Hopefully this gets touched on more in the series.
But yeah, while I understand I feel like Steph is the most pitiful character in the book. It helps that the one humiliating, harassing, and taking things too far (but not too far) is actually Shiro not Sora. But considering the douche thing Sora did to her that made her unable to really fight back (despite what the author implies) Steph really got screwed.
There were two things I noticed about the writing. One, even without dialogue tags I knew who was talking (thank you Yuu Kamiya!); and two, sometimes the sentences would end prematurely. But its barely noticeable so not a big deal.
Final Thoughts: This is such a fascinating book, not only was it a decent read, but my overanalyzing mind was satisfied too! I’m pretty excited about the next vol, even knowing this series will become a harem. I feel like Yuu Kamiya will make it all make sense.
This would be the first time I've ever tried reading a light novel. Before I proceed with my short review, I'd like to make it a point that I have already watched the anime (because I think it had an effect on my experience of reading the story).
It was okay. Certainly easy to read ("light" novel, indeed XD). But my main comment about it, which is most probably the same with the anime as well, is how the story would have been potentially great and unique if not for its very much apparent element of targeting the male audience. In my opinion, some scenes in the story sort of unintentionally appeared shallow and too clichéd because of throwing in (perhaps "overusing" would be the appropriate word) what they call "fan service" too often. Although the plot, in general, is interesting. Not entirely extraordinary. Just enough to make me occasionally excited and also just enough to keep me turning to the next page.
Could’ve been a 5 star for light novel standards if the fanservice wasn’t ruining it. Way too much, way too weird, makes me feel like I might go to jail for reading it sometimes. Which is a shame because I really really like the actual plot. It could’ve been just a good novel… but nope… too horny
I have some unpopular opinions about this novel as can be seen from the rating. The only reason why it is not a one star review is that this is a shounen title.
TL;DR Watch the anime, don't read the novel.
WARNING: This review is long and very negative. Don't read it if you can't take it.
I first watched the anime and I really liked the characters and the world. I still think the world is one of the most unique among the light novels I have read and characters are... well, they are there. Also, the prose is horrible. It is repetitive, amateur, and not enjoyable at all, which is actually true about most light novels.
Let's start with the main characters: Sora and Shiro, the genius gamer siblings. Both of them are extremely capable or rather superhuman when it comes to any kind of game. Every other sentence in the novel is about how they are unbelievably OP. Now, have you ever heard of "Show, don't tell" principle? The author of this series certainly hasn't. We are told over and over and over again how unbelievably smart these siblings are. The repetition is unbelievable. I mean it. Granted on occasion, they show average intellect.
Shiro has some supernatural ability when it comes to numbers. She can calculate every possible move in chess, something that no contemporary computer can do and something that certainly no human can do. Sora on the other hand has more believable abilities, but they are still over the top. Although we technically have two MCs, the real MC is Sora. People either praise Sora alone or the praise the siblings together. The only person who praises Shiro is Sora and no one else.
Let's talk about the personalities of these two MCs. First Shiro: What personality? She is extremely shallow. I realise that she is an 11 year old kid. That is not an excuse to have a boring character whose only redeeming quality is her inhuman brain. Now, Sora has the slightest bit more personality. We know he is 18 and a virgin. The author makes sure we know that he is a virgin. In case you forget he is a virgin worry not, you will be reminded of it on the next page. And the one after that. The whole jokes are about either about his virginity or about Steph (we will come to her in a moment). Sora has a pretty rotten personality. He decides to doom a whole species because they do some R-rated stuff to survive. He prefers to sit and watch a race go extinct, rather than to help them. Is it funny? No, of course not. And the worst part? These two siblings emotionally and physically torture Steph and sexually abuse her. They would be in prison serving no less than 10 years for doing what they did to Steph. It is pretty disgusting.
Let's get back to the topic of how smart these siblings are. Everyone around them is in awe of their intellect, especially Sora's. Statesmen of other countries are constantly SHOCKED by every little thing Sora does. Really? How can you be a prominent figure without being able to think or know these tactics? Even a highschooler would be able to think of these things and you, with years of experience in politics, can't? How did you even run the country before now? We are being told that Sora and Shiro are awesome every other sentence (not an exaggeration) but mostly their "stratagems" are subpar. This makes all the other people in the world outright idiots for thinking these strategies are something godly.
I have one positive thing to say about the novel, there were times I felt pumped up. Not a lot, but some. I pushed myself through 6 volumes because the anime was good and I thought maybe the novels will also be good or get better. They never did.
The novel I read this summer was No Game No Life, by Yuu Kamiya. This novel is classified as a light novel that was published on 4/21/2015. A light novel is a style of Japanese writing which primarily targets high school and middle school students, it is in English. Picture a present day, average sized room, the door, the windows, and tons of gaming monitors and computers. And soon imagine a different world known as Disboard. This completely average room is where we meet our protagonists, Sora and Shiro. They are siblings, not blood related who share an introverted personality. Sora is an 18 year old male virgin, and Shiro is a growing 11 year old girl. One day, after winning an online chess game against an anonymous user, they were suddenly transported to the world of Disboard where they met a boy named Tet. Turns out, that little boy was the God of the world. Tet informs the two that everything in this world is decided by games. And the goal for the two is to faceoff against Tet once again and claim the title of God of Disboard. This is the first book of the series and I don’t know how the theme would change, but the message for this novel is to play to your advantage.
I had a great time reading this novel because it really showed a whole new perspective of how to play video games. Despite being very unrealistic, it was entertaining to see what exploits could be found in different types of games. And even different twists on old games to make them more exciting. It shows me what a true introvert feels like, how they keep themselves secluded and what they could be searching for. I believe that the book was very interesting and entertaining, showing what going to another world could be like! I am looking forward to seeing how their adventures unfold in besting the God of play: Tet. I would recommend this novel to anyone who would want to see what getting transported to another world could be like! I could relate to these characters because I always want to know what would give me the best advantage in any game I play.
Hello everyone, this will be my last review for 2023! Woo-Hoo!
So I just recently rewatched the anime and I thought to myself... "Huh I'd like to finish this story and see how it all plays out" so I ordered the first four light novels. I will have to say I think this story translates better as a visual adaptation than a literary one just on the way it is written.
The thing with light novels for me is they are often too skeletal for me. My main issue with this series it is sometimes hard for me to tell who is talking. Because half the time there are no dialogue tags. If it were not for watching the show I would have a very hard time visualizing this as well since there are barely and descriptions.
This writing style is one I will probably just need to get acclimated with idk... all I know is I really do want to see how this series plays out and I know I probably won't get another season of the anime so guess like I will have to read on and find out. I believe after book three is where it is all new for me story-wise and hopefully I enjoy it enough to see it through until the end.
For better or worse, Yuu Kamiya uses a unique narrative style for his novels, placing the reader in the third person where all the characters exaggerate their noises, dialogues, and extend silences with ellipses (in Shiro's case). However, this has a positive point in my opinion.
Although it’s a bit jarring at first, as you progress through the reading, it becomes more interesting how, without fear of losing, the two siblings manage to get involved in increasingly dangerous situations with cunning. The author handles his characters very well to the point that, even though you know they will win (because they tell you themselves), you NEVER know how. It's always a super creative and captivating twist, and pretty crazy. It's AWESOME.
Personally, I highly recommend reading the light novel of No Game No Life. Give it a look. More than a novel, it’s an 𝑬𝑿𝑷𝑬𝑹𝑰𝑬𝑵𝑪𝑬.
No Game No Life is a novel adaptation of the popular manga series. Its amazing to see that the novel truly does live up to the fantasy genre that the manga and anime did so amazingly. Sora and Shiro are two shut-in siblings, who spend the entirety of their time playing video games. They're practically an unstoppable team at any game they play together, which made them living urban legends across the internet. One day they're challenged to a game of chess by a self proclaimed god named Tet, who is from a different reality. They win the game, and to their surprise, they're transported to the alternate world of Disboard, where all conflicts are solved through games. The siblings traverse through their new home, and decide to try and become the rulers of Elkia, a nation in Disboard inhabited by humans. With the help of Stephanie Dola, the granddaughter of the former king, the siblings successfully take over Elkia. Their next conquest? Become the next gods of Disboard. No Game No Life is an amazing read, full of hilarious and captivating moments. Sora and Shiro seem unstoppable, but in reality, they heavily depend on each other, and being together is what holds their power. I highly suggest anyone who is a fan of the fantasy genre read this book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book is about a pair of siblings Shiro and Sora, they're what people would call shut ins or otakus. One day while they were playing games, the two siblings were disturbed by a sudden email. The email consisted of a link for chess, after a few days of playing against 'unknown' they had finally beat them, however little did they know, the siblings would be transported into their dream world where games rule over all.
It was definitely an amazing book, however everyone few pages or so the author/editor would add a fancy word, compared to the rest of the somewhat bland writing it looked out of place. Though, the plot itself is quite interesting, the chemistry between the two siblings makes for an interesting pair of protagonists. They each have this unique genius personality which really hooks the reader in and attaches you to the two.
I would definitely recommend this book to people who have a good grasp of fantasy. It's a good book that hooks you in with its unique characters and plot.
4/5 Two siblings are brought into the world of Disboard because of their aptitude for games. Sora and Shiro collectively know as “ “ or Blank are game prodigies that have never lost a game except to each other and top hundreds of leader boards on Earth.
Brought to the world of Disboard after beating the world’s god at a game of chess the siblings start on their Isekai adventure. The planet Disboard is unique in that physical violence and war are impossible due the gods ruling. Therefore all matters in the world are solved with games. Nations borders and all other conflicts included.
Volume One covers the character introductions as well as the siblings arriving at Disboard. Then it’s them establishing themselves in the world and starting their domination.
I enjoy the characters, world building, and even the perverse humor. However Shiro one of the main characters is a Loli and there is some semi sexual humor involving her that while PG-13 at worst is still pretty gross. Kind of a cultural thing that I do my best to ignore and look past. The rest of the colorful art I enjoy.
I love the way the series is written, although I could live with a little less fan service. However, that also makes it funny sometimes so all is good.
Something about translations (I read the books in English, can't speak/read Japanese): TL;DR: the YenPress-released official translation is awesome. Explanation below.
I read here in some review that the official translation is weird, that it uses strange old/obsolete English etc. and that the fan-made translations are better because they use "normal" English. This is hogwash because the use of the Old English is made in the book where appropriate, it's not that hard to understand (mind you, the vocabulary is generally rich and that's awesome even though I needed to use dictionary all the time as I'm not a native speaker). An example: a character older than the world that has been isolated from any contact with society for eons shouldn't speak contemporary language. That just wouldn't make sense, would it?
I watched the anime years ago and I remembered not liking it very much. Took me pretty long to pick up the book because if it.
Firstly, I can't remember much of the anime anymore, but I think I do like the novel better. Just a feeling. The anime ran up to the flugel arc in book 2, I believe (I don't know if there's season 2). So I'd like to finish book 2 first before I start a real comparison between the anime and the novel.
I believe the main draw of the series have always been the siblings. At least for me. Shiro will always fill that cute and smart loli role and Sora is quite a smart guy as well, I like them both. Why? Read it and find out yourself.
I'd never talk about writing style. If I'm such an expert on it, I'd be a writer. Let's just say, I can understand it and it conveyed the meaning the author is getting across. That should be good enough for anybody.
This was a super quick read, taking me less than a day to read. I admittedly watched the 1st episode of the anime awhile ago, and enjoyed it well enough, but never continued it, but I really want to read the Light Novels, and I can't say that I was disappointed. I love how the brother and sister play off of each other as well as how they approach games. I look forward to continuing the stories. There is definitely some suggestive artwork right at the beginning of the book, that people should be aware of, but it doesn't speak much to the content (anytime the do something pervy they talk about needing to keep it G-rated)
The two siblings who are gaming experts and have never lost a game are transported into a fantasy world after defeating God. The typical Isekai beginning. They enter a world where everything is decided by games and can even manipulate emotions by winning a game. Those two discover that the human race is the weakest out of all 16 races while all others have powerful magic at their disposal - which are basically cheat tools. So that seals the deal: They want to conquer this world!
Fun and easy to read. I just love the concept: playing games in a fantasy world.
