Riveting, page turner. This type of book is my favorite way to consume life lessons and self improvement. Through amazing, can’t put it down storytelling. I read it in a day and truly couldn’t stop from the moment I started. Full of valuable life lessons and takeaways, it’s a book that will stick with you well after you’ve finished the last page. Excited to read what comes next.
I know the feeling all too well when a spouse cheats, but unlike Kat, I caught my husband in the act. Kat faced her pain with grace because she was strong. She accepted what happened and moved on with her new life. This book is nothing short of amazing! You learn that life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it (those are my words, not Kat’s). But the valuable lessons in Never Let a Good Disaster Go to Waste teach how to accept life at its best and its worst, yet find joy in all life offers—good and evil. I’m glad I read this inspirational book about a lady who knows how to live life to the fullest, even with health issues. My favorite part of the book was her trip to Australia—oh, how I long to go back. You will love her adventures Down Under.
I have met Kat while living in Port Vila, Vanuatu, over pandemic period. I have attended her yoga retreat, also done private yoga sessions with her. It was easy to form friendship with such a positive person. She was telling me that she is writing a memoir. I couldn’t wait to read it once it is finished! Her life seemed intriguing. The book is written in an easy flow manner, just like when you do vinyasa. Reading it was a pleasure and I do feel somewhat connected to Kat as I lived or visited same places like Vanuatu islands, Darwin, Australia, Bali, Indonesia. I cannot wait for a second book. Worth a read who wants to get inspired how to battle your own battles of thoughts, be more mindful and positive.
If you thought Eat Pray Love was a great book, you're going to love this roller-coaster ride through Kat's life. Part travel adventure, part personal journey and part self-help/Buddhist philosophy, this memoir is entertaining, quirky, funny and inspiring. There are some genuinely powerful insights within its pages - why read a boring self help book when you can simply immerse yourself in Kat's spellbinding tales and soak up the secrets to life, the universe and everything! A life-changing memoir and a must read. Kat really is the Master of Disaster!
Absolutely loved this book! Such a great read! Kat's memoir gave me all the feels. Reading about her journey and life experiences was inspiring and empowering. Kat has such a positive outlook on life. Reading her book served as a great reminder about the power of our minds and how taking a different perspective, finding the positives, and never giving up is a much better way to spend our energy. Thank you Kat! xo
Recommended by a friend who met Kat Finnerty at a yoga retreat in Bali. This is a memoir centering around her living with MS. Easy to read and some food for thought in terms of how grateful we should be for what we have.
This is a beautifully written and enjoyable memoir. It is the author’s life story, with wisdom, humour, and resilience woven seamlessly into a narrative of personal growth and self-discovery. Though disaster memoirs and self-help are not my usual fare, Kat’s story captivated me from page one. Considering the subject matter, it is a remarkably fun read, which also left me scribbling down countless insightful quotes.
This is one of those rare books to which I would award six-stars if I could. Undoubtedly, I will read it again.
Kat’s life has been riddled with the type of challenges that even individually, would crush most people, yet she continually rises from the ashes. The narrative is a roller coaster ride of jaw-dropping revelations and situations that test her to the core, revealing a strength and perseverance that is both inspiring and humbling. She overcomes brutal betrayals, debilitating disease, and the discovery of shocking family secrets, yet she doesn’t wither in defeat. Kat doesn’t sugar coat the difficulty and pain, and never claims it was easy. She is also willing to recognise her own weaknesses and the part she played in some of the disasters, which is very difficult to do.
The central theme of the book is the power of attitude in the face of adversity. The author poignantly illustrates that while the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune are not within our gift to control, what we can command is our reaction to them. This idea, drawn from experiences throughout her life, is a powerful takeaway that resonates throughout her story.
Each chapter begins with a thoughtful quote, setting the stage for the wisdom and lessons in the stories that follow. Her life, marked by serendipitous moments and opportunities that appear just when she needs them most, underscores the idea that sometimes, the universe provides exactly what we need at the right time – if we are open and perceptive enough to recognise it.
This book reminded me of Paulo Coelho's work. Every page offers a nugget of wisdom or a valuable lesson woven into a spellbinding tale. The choice, the author emphasises, is ours: to be a victim or a victor, to choose selflessness over selfishness. Her book is not self-help in the traditional sense, but it is brimming with wisdom for those open to its teachings.
In conclusion, this memoir is not only a beautifully written page-turner, is also a potential catalyst for personal change. Perhaps this book is what you need right now and that’s why you’re looking at it and wondering whether to take the plunge.
If you do, at the very least, you will get an enjoyable read filled with insight, humanity, humour and more twists and turns than a plate of spaghetti. Plus, the indomitable spirit of Kat Finnerty, which might just help you change your life for the better.
There were several things that impressed me about this book. There’s the self-deprecating humour, right from the opening pages where the author introduces herself ‘…embarrassingly attired in an unflattering blue hairnet and a hideous hospital gown’, waiting for ‘an Adonis’ to ‘perform bush maintenance on my nether regions'. There are vivid, absorbing descriptions of her childhood and adolescence as part of a quirky family(many chords struck here). There’s the story of her multiple adventures and encounters as she strides out to see the world. But what seemingly starts out as an engaging memoir by an unusually disaster-prone narrator turns into something different when she is hit by one disaster of life-changing proportions. Kat’s struggles to overcome her debilitating illness and the breakup of her marriage, recounted with disarming frankness and self-awareness, make for a truly riveting read. Our feelings of admiration grow, and keep on growing. She is ready to try anything, to pursue every possible solution, to pick herself up over and over again when she falls. Her quest for knowledge through a combination of physical and intellectual fearlessness is impressive. A further dimension to this tale of triumph over adversity is added through the revelation of a long-kept family secret. But for me what made this memoir truly remarkable was the author’s compelling voice as she shares with us the lessons learnt along the way– the importance of individual perception and perspective in facing life’s challenges, and her conviction that, ultimately, it is possible to make sense of ‘a life of absurdity’. Highly recommended.
I've been on such a memoir kick lately. I love reading about other people's journeys and I've learnt so much from memoirs. I just finished Never Let A Good Disaster Go To Waste.
The memoir opens with Kat having found out that her husband has been cheating on her with one of her friends, and she resolves not to spend more than 12 hours being sad over this betrayal. At first, I thought that can't be possible or even a good idea, but in the memoir Kat recounts her life experiences, travels, health issues and her spiritual journey, in which she developed a great deal of acceptance, resilience and gratitude. When you read about Kat's spiritual evolution, her ability to move on from her husband's betrayal in 12 hours makes total sense.
I was really moved by this book. It's written in a really open, relatable and easy-to-read style and it is just so inspiring and compassionate. It talks a lot about karma, how we shape our own destinies and how no matter what we've been through, it's never too late to change your path in life and shape your future for the better. I have a tendency at times to wallow and feel victimized, but Never Let A Good Disaster Go To Waste is all about accepting struggle, no matter how rough, and moving forward, being kind, strong, and hopeful, an attitude that will change your fortunes, not matter what life throws your way.
I'll cherish this book and its message!
Thanks to Kat Finnerty for sharing your story and I highly recommend others check this one out! 🥰🤗
Kat Finnerty's 'Never Let a Good Disaster Go to Waste' is a memoir unlike any other I have read. It is equal parts raw, witty, and deeply resonant. Kat masterfully captures the absurdity of life's challenges, weaving humour and heart into every chapter. Her ability to find wisdom and even humour in moments of chaos is nothing short of inspiring.
What I loved most about this book is Kat's unapologetic honesty. She bares her soul with such grace that it feels like having a deep conversation with an old friend. Her storytelling is sharp, engaging, and filled with nuggets of insight that stayed with me long after I closed the book.
This is not just a memoir—it’s a reminder that life’s disasters, big or small, can be opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Kat's perspective on embracing absurdity while finding meaning and joy is a lesson we all need.
