“Welcome to Lisdoonvarna - where the only thing waggin’ more than the flags in the wind are the tongues. Especially when it comes to love.”

☘ This St. Patrick’s Day present from my sweetie will be in the running for my top book of 2024! ☘

Allow new-to-me author Jennifer Deibel to sweep you away to the picturesque town of Lisdoonvarna, the home of a centuries-old matchmaking festival in the southwest of Ireland.

Deibel’s story examines (1) how far desperation will carry us when we’re determined to change our lot in life, (2) why a God who loves his own so much can allow suffering, (3) what happens when we reach the stage where we’re willing to reconcile our faith, and (4) how our past influences our choices.

Catriona Daly grew up in this sleepy village as the only child of a well-known matchmaker. Every September, she watched her father orchestrate matches for those who’d travelled to the town’s festival in search of a partner. There’s ample work for Catriona to join her father and she soon earns an equally impressive reputation. Unfortunately, years of watching others fall in love while she remains ‘Lisdoonvarna’s unmatched matchmaker’ is not only bad for business but for her heart. She begins to search for someone who can take her out of her dead-end village….and she’s willing to compromise.

I appreciated the exploration of how Catriona was only seen by many as what she could do for them, overlooking her qualities as a potential friend or partner. It was also good to think about the balance between what we think we want and what we need. Catriona was tempted to make herself into someone different to achieve what she thought she wanted. Finally, it was good to be encouraged to serve rather than scold.

I was born and raised in Northern Ireland but never learned a word of Gaelic! It didn’t stop me from loving the Irish language and expressions sprinkled throughout, the gentle faith element woven into the story, and the completely absorbing tale Deibel shared.

I’m still smiling thinking about footin’ turf, plucking the gander, and The Serpent on the Mound.

I’m off in search of this author’s backlist ASAP!

Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Make me a Match...

As a period piece set in 1905, rural Ireland takes center stage while a widowed farmer searches for a wife at the insistence of his nine year old daughter. His matchmaker Catriona has her hands full as he’s a reluctant client and is not easily persuaded to attend planned gatherings with like minded folk.

Not knowing the extent of a matchmaker’s duties, I discovered one of the most fascinating functions came AFTER a couple decided they wanted to marry. The matchmaker oversaw a bartering process between the families in which dowries and assets were exchanged and while seemingly unromantic, it promoted fairness.

I really enjoyed this! Descriptive writing, factual details, and captivating characters. I was charmed.

In addition, I love colloquialisms and this book placed an emphasis on the Irish language which was assisted by a glossary at the front of the book. Although it wasn’t difficult to decipher based on inference, the reference was helpful and appreciated by my curious self.

However, there were a few instances where conversations between the characters sounded too modern to fit into the time frame especially compared to the authentic Gaelic expressions. Otherwise, this was wonderful.

If you’re looking for a gratifying historical romance in beautiful Ireland, you may love this as I did!

My personal Rating- Two Stars

I have mixed feelings about this book. It started out really cute, but started getting a bit too notice-y on his muscles and kissy for my tastes and past what I want to recommend for BFCG’s target ages. The prior book I read by this author would be fine for high school girls, but this one has me shaking my head for them because of the prior mentioned content and a player side character that Catríona is infatuated with.

I knew based on the back cover that Catríona was going to be infatuated with the wrong guy and even though I knew that it would drive me a bit crazy, I was still very interested in this book because of the matchmaking element. I did get annoyed at her for being so smitten with a player and unable to see past his ability to take her away from her small town. She made some bad choices that made me want to fuss at her. I really liked her with Sara, but elsewise I wanted to smack some sense into her. I was so excited when Sara’s point of view started because I already really liked her and her father. Donal was trying so hard for the sake of his little girl and it was really sweet to see. I did really like the importance of father-daughter relationships in this book between Catríona and her father & then Donal and Sara.

I wasn’t a fan of the drinking elements—particularly when Donal drinks a pint and it’s noted that his chest was filled with courage to tell the truth to someone.

Not being very familiar with Irish history and terms (such as “plucking of the gander”) I had to research quite a bit because not everything was explained. There was a glossary at the beginning which covered a lot, but I’m also just not aware of the history of Ireland of this time (or any time, really).

Some have said this book has a love triangle, but I don’t think so at all because we never see the other man’s perspective— thankfully, because he was a player and a jerk that brought these ratings down enough as it is.

There really were a lot of cute parts and it was an easy-to-read story that while may have been completely predictable, was still cute at times. So, I hate to mark it so low, but I truly don’t think it’s the best choice for those in high school.

I liked how the Sermon on the Mount was mentioned and thought about so much, but at the same time I wish we would have seen more development in both Catríona & Donal’s faiths on page. By the end, you get the impression that they’re each “good with God”, but after comments and concerns they both had, I would have liked to see it actually discussed and resolved. While we never see them cross themselves after praying, there are mentions of Mass, priests, & nuns that imply the typical Catholic faith for these characters at this time in history. That said, we never see them go to church or Mass once.

I liked some aspects but there were definitely parts that lowered my rating and content (lots of kissing, noticing muscles, and jerk of a player to name some) that make me mark this book not the best choice for those in BFCG’s target age range.

“The Lord certainly had a fine sense of humor, leading her to end up with exactly what she didn’t want. Except it was everything she could want and more.”

I loved this gentle, endearing, historical Irish romance! Jennifer Deibel knows how to weave a fantastic Irish tale that captures not only the gorgeous countryside, but the charming personalities of the people. It was such a beautiful story with a sweet message of hope and faith. The characters were so delightful and I could hear that amazing Irish brogue in my head every time I read. It’s an engaging second chance romance between an Irish matchmaker and one of her matches. Though Catriona thinks she knows what she wants, she receives a pleasant surprise when she realizes what she truly needs.

I loved Donal and his cute daughter Sara. Donal is a cattle farmer barely hanging on to his livelihood. When his wife died, he was left to raise his small daughter on his own, but increasing difficulties with the farm have caused him to seek a wife. Though he doesn’t think he can give Catriona what she desires, the powerful attraction between them makes him want to try. I loved their slow burn romance and how they managed the ups and downs in their relationship. I also enjoyed all the side characters, especially Sara, Caty’s dad, and their friends who made this story even more fun. Of course there’s a villain in the story, and I appreciated the twists that occur because of him.

It’s a heartfelt, romantic story in a lovable, small Irish village that definitely kept me turning the pages. I enjoyed how the author included the Irish brogue to give this a truly authentic feel with a glossary at the beginning of the book to easily refer back to. I also loved the references to the Sermon on the Mount and the beautiful message surrounding the lilies of the field.

Highly recommend to inspirational historical romance fans, especially those who love Irish romances. Looking forward to more stories from this author. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.

The Irish Matchmaker - Jennifer Deibel - 4 Stars
BLOG REVIEW POST HERE

Jennifer does NOT disappoint with her newest release, The Irish Matchmaker. I have read every one of her books and they consistently deliver captivating tales filled with profound emotion. In The Irish Matchmaker we follow the daughter of a well-known matchmaker, Catriona Daly. She is helping widowed cattle farmer Donal Bunratty find a wife to help take care of their family farm and raise his daughter by his side. He attends the matchmaking festival as a wish for his young daughter, only to end up not finding the one he thought he would. But what happens when the one doing the matchmaking appears to be the woman of his dreams? The story goes on from here as Donal and Catriona get to know one another but Lord Osborne's son, Andrew, throws a "cog in the wheel" we will say in all the matchmaking.....

This Christian Historical Romance is set in Ireland and Jennifer always has the best descriptions and dialogue for the setting and characters. You really feel like you are there with them. The characters always touch your heart too. I love a good single Dad story finding love again - one of my favorite tropes - and this was so sweet as his little girl stole my own heart! The story did take a little bit for me to get invested but around the 50% mark, I finished the book so quickly and loved the ending. The romance was sweet - I thought originally it was going to be a love triangle, but it wasn't really a serious one, as we knew Andrew was not a good guy from the beginning and Donal and her had a great connection together.

My favorite part of this is the ending and the Sermon on the Mount scriptures and discussion with his little girl. Absolutely beautiful.

I will always recommend Jennifer's books - solid clean, Christian Historical Romance. No content warnings or triggers to report as the romance was completely clean with kisses only. :)

Thank you to Revell and Jennifer for allowing me to be on the Launch Team and providing me with a copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Irish Matchmaker by Jennifer Deibel is a wonderful historical romance. As the reader we are transported to Ireland in the early 1900s during the time of a matchmaking festival. I had heard of matchmakers before, but I never knew there were such things as matchmaking festivals, so that was really cool to get to experience one through the eyes of both a matchmaker and a festival goer.

The story is told from three points of view. That of Catriona Daly, a matchmaker and daughter of a renowned matchmaker. That of Donal Bunratty who is a widower who is trying to take care of his farm while also taking care of his young daughter. And we occasionally see the story through his daughter Sara’s eyes.

Catriona is wonderful at making matches, following in the shoes of her father; however, she herself has been unable to find love for herself. But during this year’s festival, she is determined to change her status, and hopefully get out of this small, rural community. Why not try to catch the eye of one of her well-to-do clients, Andrew Osborne. Though is he really the type of person she wants to spend the rest of her life with?

Donal is trying his best to take care of his farm and his young daughter Sara. But they have come upon hard times. He wants to be able give her more and she wants to see him happily married, plus, she really wants a mother. So, reluctantly he agrees to take part in the matchmaking festival, for her. But um, was he supposed to start having feelings for his matchmaker? And would she ever be interested in him? After all, she wants out of this community, she wants a better life. Not to be shackled to a life of hardship.

I loved watching the feelings between them grow, which others can see and they seem to be denying. The story is full of faith and learning about God’s provision, quite inspirational. And, I have to add, I’ll never be able to think of the Sermon on the Mount in the same way again. I also loved the relationship between Sara and her dad and Sara and Catriona. Caty’s best friend Maeve and her father were wonderful side characters. The author really brought this story and Ireland to life for me. And yes, there was even a villain and near tragedy, and we see the importance of community and not being prideful.

This was my first book by this author, but it sure won’t be my last. I loved this book, and highly recommend it.

I received an ARC of this book as a member of the launch team and was not required to write a favorable review. These are my own honest thoughts.

The twists and turns in the plot keep readers on their toes, wondering how the intricate web of relationships will untangle. While some aspects may be predictable, the beauty lies in the journey, much like a scenic drive through the rolling Irish countryside.

The Irish Matchmaker by Jennifer Deibel(5⭐)
I loved this book by Jennifer Deibel! It’s one of those books that is so beautifully written and filled with a great love story and setting. A perfect book to read in between more heavy books to just relax and enjoy the ride. The audiobook was also excellent for this one, as the narrator used an Irish accent for the narration. It really transported me into the story and I enjoyed it all the more.

* " The spa wells were tucked into the hillside along a bend in the Aille River. The bathhouse gleamed like a jewel in green velvet, surrounded by lush trees and other flora and fauna. The sound of the water trickling along its banks brought a hint of whimsy to the place, and the air was thick with the rich scent of damp turf, fresh water, and the tangy, slightly minty aroma of gorse bushes and elm trees. "
“Helpin’ one another isn’t
charity. It’s bein’
neighborly.”
Въпреки трудната съдба на ирландците, в душите им сякаш винаги тлее страстта към земята им и очакването на любовта, която да даде смисъл на всички дни. Семейството за тях е най - силната примка, която ги държи здраво стъпили на изстрадалата им земя!

Wonderful story! I found this book delivered in so many different ways. A beautiful romance. A story of family and community. Full of Irish tradition. Lovable characters.

I was initially drawn to this book by the title, The Irish Matchmaker, intrigued by the tradition of Irish matchmaking. I quickly found that this is a story of God's provision, one of the power of community. It is a powerful story of faith, and learning to trust in God.

As always, Ms. Deibel's love for the country of Ireland shines through with her signature attention to detail. Her portrayal of the the festival and its matchmakers is a tribute to the real life matchmakers of Ireland.

I felt a roller coaster of emotions as I read Donal and Catriona's story. At times, laughing out loud, other times, close to tears. Readers will find Ms. Deibel's characters heartwarming. I found young Sara delightful, wise beyond her years. While Donal and Catriona's story was predictable, it was wonderful to read their journey, as each learned to trust in God's plan and provision to bring their happily ever after. Highly recommend!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher through Netgalley. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Jennifer Deibel writes a heart-warming story about what we think we want and what God knows we need.  You will be whisked away to the hills of Ireland following Catriona, a matchmaker, helping others find love while she is wishing it would enter her own life, so she can escape a world she doesn’t want to belong to.

We also follow Donal, a farmer who lost his wife years ago and is struggling to meet the needs of his wonderful daughter Sarah. The last thing he wants is to find love, but his daughter wishes for a mother, and he doesn’t want to let her down.

Deibel weaves a tale of finding love unexpectedly and the beauty of what it looks like when you do.

I couldn’t put this down. The love story holds a charming uniqueness to it and will warm your heart.
Catriona goes through so much growth throughout the story, and I love her maturity and faith that blossoms.
Donal and Sarah are such lovely characters that you can’t help but want them to find their happy ending.

It’s a story full of friendship, the Irish hills, romance, and God’s sense of humor. This is a book I can’t recommend enough.

In The Irish Matchmaker, Jennifer Deibel once again makes Ireland come alive with her lyrical writing voice and vibrantly-drawn characters. The story engaged all my senses and I felt as though I were right there in the pub with Catríona and her father or at the farm with Donal and Sara, the sights & sounds & smells almost tangible. I have also somehow gone the majority of my life without knowing about the matchmaking traditions of the Irish, but I’ve recently read a couple of novels – including this one – centered around matchmakers and I find it so charming. The family tradition element is especially fascinating, and the author’s note at the end of this story made me want to learn even more.

I loved Donal, our story’s hero, and his precocious little girl Sara. Quite a pair these two make, and I melted more than once at how Sara has her dad wrapped around her little finger. She doesn’t take too much advantage of this, though, unless it comes to pushing the young widower to find a wife… and then she’s delightfully not afraid to employ all the adorable wiles at her disposal. Donal is a bit of a tragic hero and my heart ached for him at the impossible situations he finds himself in with his farm and livelihood. He’s quiet but steady and doesn’t think he’s interested in romance. But keep those fans handy because he just may surprise himself before all is said and done! The faith journey on which Deibel takes Donal in The Irish Matchmaker really touched me, not only because it was so meaningful but also because I just loved Donal so much and was rooting for him to succeed.

Catríona is the kind of heroine you want as a friend, her natural warmth setting you at ease and her spirited personality promising an adventure. She made me smile whenever she was on the page, simply because her energy felt so lively and engaging. She doesn’t overpower Donal, though…. well, not much anyway lol. They complement each other nicely, as a matter of a fact, and I very much enjoyed watching them fall in love. And can we have three cheers for a heroine who’s a bit more plump than the norm? I adored the relatability of her character (in other ways besides appearance too) and loved her sense of humor.

Bottom Line: The Irish Matchmaker by Jennifer Deibel is lovely and charming and sweet, and its layered characters will settle right into your heart… even the cows. What a delightful setting for a novel, too – a quaint Irish village known for its annual matchmaking festival (and what fun that would be to observe!). Beautiful faith lessons are integrated naturally into the story, developing the characters even further without distracting from the plot. And ohhhh the romance is so swoony and edifying and I’ve been living in a happy little glow since I closed the last page. A must-read for fans of Laura Frantz and Lori Benton – with an Irish twist!

Oh wow - where do I begin?! No one does Irish culture in Christian fiction better than Jennifer Deibel. I always fall in love with her characters, the setting, and how she weaves everything together into a beautiful story. The Irish Matchmaker is no different! And even better, it's based on an actual event that goes back years in Irish history. Caty and Donal are a match made in heaven, and little Sara is the extra spark they both need to come together.

Tears, happiness, and overflowing love are waiting for everyone who reads this book, and I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

A charming romantic tale of God’s providence against the backdrop of Ireland, The Irish Matchmaker delights! Jennifer Deibel beautifully depicts an Irish community in 1905 with vivid descriptions, well-written characters, and a storyline that makes you hold your breath through trials then sigh in contentment at the happily ever after. I loved that Caitrona was a tad older and plumper than an average heroine, and I loved that Donal was a tenderhearted loving hero. And his daughter Sara was a brilliant little Irish matchmaker!Donal and Caitrona’s journey to find one another brought lessons in God’s faithfulness and provision that warm the heart. No one writes about Ireland like Jennifer, and each of her stories is a testament to Irish culture in a way that gets better with each book. This story was extremely well done, and gets a wholehearted five stars!

I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts are my own. I really did love it!

What a wonderful, terrific love story!

I think there's a population of us ladies who, at some point in our lives, have an idea of a man, with romantic notions, yet are actually clueless about that man. Enter, Lord Andrew Osborne. He's back in Lisdoonvarna after a failed matchmaking, but Catríona is ready to make the match... with her. She absolutely had heart eyes for him. As a reader, you knew that was a train wreck you wouldn't be turning away from.

Then there's Donal. He's a widower, with a precocious 9yr old daughter named Sara, and he owns a farm that's basically on his last leg. His relationship with his daughter is sweet, yet he's a bit too dependent on her. Not surprising with the time period. She convinces him to attend the annual matchmaking event in town. He's not interested, but he needs the help.

I feel like Caty (Catríona) is easy to relate to on a number of levels. She's on the bigger side and her mother's nagging ways taunt her mind. She's trying to change to fit in with Andrew's family so who they're getting to know is not the real Caty. She also wants to escape the life she's currently in. No way does she want to go back to farm living nor does she want to continue living above the pub with her matchmaking father, Jimmy. So, Andrew is her ticket out.

Andrew... don't get me started. The end.

On the other hand, as Catríona works to get Donal a love match, she begins to get to know him and his daughter more. Over a couple of weeks and a variety of interactions, there are definitely sparks on both sides, but there are factors that stand in their way. *see all of the reasons above hahahaha

There are some seriously RO-mantic moments in this story that will make your heart swell. They seriously put a smile on my face! Faith is interspersed through the story, mostly around the Sermon on the Mount (although what Sara calls it will forever live rent free in my brain), reminding the characters (and us) about God's provision.

*I received a copy of the book for review. This is my personal opinion.

I loved the history that Jennifer Deibel pulled from to write this enchanting story! It is really fascinating learning about traditions and life for different cultures and time periods in regards to marriage and matchmaking. I loved the thought of a matchmaking festival where those seeking a match would come and interact with the others seeking for a match and see how they connected and if they could be a match.

Catríona Daly (Cat) and her dad have been matchmaking for many years and Cat is ready for her own match. She has it all planned out and is going to do what it takes to make it with the man she wants. I loved watching her trying everything and working around other matches and people to work on making her plans succeed. But funnily enough, sometimes what we want and try so hard to make work, isn't what's right. I loved watching Cat encountering this lesson and trying to fight it with all she had until she finally realized the truth.

Andrew and Donal are two of the men who have come to the festival looking for a match as well. Cat is supposed to be helping them find their match, but there are some obstacles she'll have to overcome if she's going to succeed with them. One of these two you'll find absolutely charming and perfect for Cat, while the other you'll be telling her to steer clear of!

I loved the rich descriptions of the countryside, the village and the people. It was so quaint and charming at the same time. I felt like I was right there with them celebrating in the square, going for a walk along the hillside, dancing and cheering each other on, or having a cuppa in the pub. The brogue and Irish culture shaped this one beautifully! I was pulled in and full invested in who would win Cat's heart.

Content: Clean. Some mild moments of peril. Some kisses but nothing further.

I received a copy from the publisher, Revell, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

The Irish Matchmaker is a Christian historical romance novel by the talented, award winning author Jennifer Deibel. I absolutely loved this intriguing story. It captivated my attention within the first few pages and kept it all throughout the book.

Set in a small town in Ireland in early 1900s, this is the story of Catriona Daly. She and her father, Jimmy, have a matchmaking business. It is also the story of widower, Donal Bantratty. He lives on a farm in the county and has a young daughter, Sara, that completely stole my heart. The annual matchmaking festival has just begun and young Sara’s birthday wish is for her father to seek a match, thus getting her a new mother.

The author has a lovely style of writing. It quickly drew me in. I was invested in the story and lives of the characters. The characters were diverse and realistic. I loved the old words and Irish dialect. With the deft descriptions I felt as if I was right there watching everything happen.

The spiritual message was beautiful and lightly woven throughout the novel. I found myself smiling as I read and actually teared up a time or two. There are a variety of twists and turns that kept me guessing what might happen. I loved the author’s notes at the end explaining about the festival and matchmakers.

I highly recommend this wonderful novel to everyone. It would be a treat for a reading group or make a great gift. It earns a solid five star rating from me. A copy was provided by NetGalley and the Publisher, but these are my honest words.

I absolutely adored this book! I can’t remember the last time I read a book based in Ireland, but now I’m wondering why I haven’t read more that do take place in that incredible country. You are swept away to the rolling hills, windy roads, and an idyllic little town. If nothing else the imagery captures your heart and attention in this sweet love story.
The romance in this story is the kind that brings a smile to your face, makes you giggle like a school girl, and sigh dreamily. Donal and Catriona’s story is full of ups and downs, but it all comes together so beautifully in the end. I love how they found each other without even looking, to me those are some of the best love stories. The romantic tension was *chefs kiss* perfection and their chemistry was so swoony. Add in Donal’s adorable daughter Sara and Caty’s dad Jimmy and best friend Meave and you have a full cast of lovable characters. I really don’t see how anyone wouldn’t enjoy this book. Plus the matchmaking festival was so fun to read about as well.
To top it all off one of my favorite aspects of this book is the reference to the Sermon on the Mount and the real meaning of faith and true love. The moments where the characters are required to test their faith were incredible and created a beautiful depth to this story.
I cannot recommend this book enough!

I was so excited to discover Jennifer Deibel, a Christian historical fiction author whose books are set in Ireland! I've been to Ireland twice, and I absolutely love it there, and I found out about this book just before my second trip. It's my understanding that Jennifer has lived in Ireland. Her experience abroad brings an authenticity to the dialogue that is hard to find in a lot of historical fiction books. I was never lost, thinking, "What on earth are they saying?" The prose flowed naturally, even with quite a few Irish terms sprinkled throughout.

What I really appreciated about the story was the message of what true love really means and what it looks like when put into action. I don't want to give any spoilers, so that's all I'll say!

I would recommend this story for anyone who enjoys historical fiction, romance, or anything about Ireland!

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book. These are my honest thoughts.

For 60 percent, I couldn’t put my finger on what was driving me nuts about this book. Then it hit me all at once and made the next 11 percent pure torture. So I’m done, and here’s what I landed on.

Neither lead acted their age. In fact, they both acted like impulsive, selfish eight-year-olds much more often than they acted like fully grown adults.

Catríona never could seem to remember that she had clients other than the rich guy she was intentionally matching poorly so he’d fall in love with her. Unethical, unprofessional, inappropriate… you name it! I’m not sure why her father and others in the community held such high opinions of her matchmaking skills (they claimed she was “the best” of the town, county, and country, but the best would act ethically and professionally). If I ran my editing business the way she ran her matchmaking one, I’d have clients running for the hills and telling everyone far and wide not to trust me with their precious books. (Thankfully, I run my business ethically and responsibly and cherish each and every client.) She even told one client that she hadn’t been treating him like she normally does her clients and then proceeded to give the excuses of being busy and having this very important client she had to match. Um, whoa. She just TOLD A CLIENT that she had MORE IMPORTANT CLIENTS than him???!! What in the world? Every client, as any good businessperson knows, is just as important as all the other ones. They each pay you a wage and expect good service. I cannot imagine treating my clients in the rude, immature, and ridiculous ways this lady did. And to basically forget you have a full load (plus an extra shoved-on-you client) simply because you’re trying to skip town with the rich guy? Wowzers, woman. Grow up.

Donal fooled me for a while. He seemed mature and responsible at first, taking care of his kid and his farm and all. But then push came to shove. We all know what happens then. The real truth comes out. He got a terrible business offer (basically a loan-shark sort of deal with a fast due date on the return) from a pair of elite, wealthy gents, and instead of praying about the idea and discovering the solution God had in store for him, he asked his NINE-YEAR-OLD daughter for advice (she didn’t have full understanding of the situation, of course, because she’s only NINE and has ZERO experience with crooked political types who are never happy unless they’re ripping off the little guys [like her daddy]) and—shock upon shock!—he took her advice and signed the paperwork. Not only that, but he left her home alone during a humongous, wild storm (hurricane or rain-wrapped tornado—it wasn’t made clear which it turned out to be) in order to impulsively head to town to sign the paperwork right then and there. Now, why on earth would he abandon his child, who should have been frightened as all get-out of the wild weather but somehow wasn’t (I’ve never known a child her age to not be petrified of tornados [which are much more prevalent than hurricanes in my area]), in order to make a business deal—and an atrocious one at that!

Then, after they go through a long search to rescue said child, Donal and Catríona somehow end up in a super passionate kissing session. How was that even a thing for these two? How had he even fallen in love with this lady who was smitten with and treating him poorly (way past abuse and/or neglect, if you ask me) for a guy with buckets and buckets of money and who Donal saw was a terrible flirt with all the servant girls? I mean, this rich dude was a flirty playboy at best and a vile pervert at worst. Not much leeway in between, if you ask me. And Donal knew Catríona was head over heels for the guy. Why would he let his heart yearn for a woman under such a surfacy, money-driven spell? That sort wouldn’t make a good wife for him or mother for his child!

And Catríona herself. Why would she let herself get wrapped up in Donal’s passion if she was still mooning over the rich guy? She hadn’t come to her senses about him up to this point even after he’d pushed himself on her, which made her uncomfortable but not so much as to immediately, or even belatedly, break off things with the guy. Was she asking to get accosted? I couldn’t really tell.

The kiss really came out of nowhere and made absolutely no sense.

I’m honestly not sure how I was supposed to root for these people. They didn’t make any smart or grownup decisions. They seemed to chase after things that weren’t biblically sound (which is never a good sign, if you ask me). And they weren’t even attracted to each other or considerate of each other for the majority of the book.

Romance? Eh, not so much. More like suspension of belief for however long it took me to decide to give up on this book.

Oh yeah. It was 71 percent. Not sure how that equated to hours spent, but however many it ended up being now feel completely wasted.

I was hoping to find out what happened to these fictional people, but at this point, I don’t even care.

I did like the parts of the festival that I saw. The dance and the tea and walk were very pleasant. I also loved how Ireland came alive under the author’s hand. That aspect was really well done. Deidre was my favorite character. She seemed the most realistic and responsible and delightful to be around. I wanted much, much more page time for her.

Content: pubs (excessive), alcohol, replacement expletives, replacement profanity, one expletive (through the first 71 percent of the story)

An appealing look back at an old Irish custom.
Donal Bunratty is a widower with an 8 year old daughter, Sara, who wants her father to find a mother for her and a wife for himself. She makes him promise to go to the festival in town to meet with the matchmaker, Catriona Daly. However, Catriona has her eye on well-to-do and handsome but vain Andrew and splits her time between matching duties and trying to catch herself a husband.
This was a cozy feeling story set in a small town that burgeoned every year with the matchmaking festival. With likable characters and shifty antagonists, this was a taste of old Ireland and its customs and culture.
A recurring theme was that God provides as illustrated in The Sermon on the Mount. Another was that we should seek God before going ahead with our own plans and then wanting God to put His stamp of approval on them.
I enjoyed the Irish lilt of the characters and the bond that developed between Catriona, Sara and Donal. It was fun to see the story unfold and that faith in God played a great part in the lives of the characters.

The Irish Matchmaker is set in Ireland 1905. I've never been there. I probably won't ever have the privilege of going. But reading this story made me feel I was there. I felt the atmosphere and the culture. The historical details of the matchmaking festival were so fun to learn and experience through the pages. The characters became my friends, especially little Sara. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Irish Matchmaker was an easy flowing, sweet story which had me turning pages as fast as I can manage reading.

I adored Sarah, her faith and trust reminded me which God said we need to have faith like children. They don’t question or overthink, but just believe that God will do what He says.

Donal and Catriona were characters to easily love and stand behind. I liked how Donal, just by being him, silently won Catriona over. There was one character I did not like and would have liked more “justice” for the way he treated people but did appreciate how he was put in his place at the end.

The writer makes it easy for readers to feel like you are in Ireland along with the characters, with the way she describes locations and culture.

I loved the two main themes in this story: Men can make plans, but ultimately God’s will and plan for your life will come to fruitions. God will provide as sure as there He provides foods for the birds and clothes for the flowers in the fields, but how our own pride can sometimes stands in the way.

Recommended for fans of historical romance.

Would you ever go to a matchmaker? Stories about matchmakers have always intrigued me. I mean, who doesn't love the idea of watching people fall in love? Put that matchmaker in Ireland (where there are no snakes, by the way!), and it's even more captivating.

Now, if you've followed me for very long, you know that I despise love triangles. And honestly, had I known (paid enough attention?) beforehand that this story would be described as an historical love triangle, there's a good chance that I wouldn't have been on the team. But Jennifer wrote this really well, and it didn't feel at all like a triangle to me.

The part that spoke the most to me, though, was how so many things pointed back to the Sermon on the Mount. I just really loved how the author did that.

So why am I giving this 4 stars instead of 5? I just didn't feel as connected to the characters as I would have liked. I wasn't IN the story, though I could see it all happening. I still recommend it.

I’ve read Jennifer Deibel’s last three novels and enjoyed them all but I think The Irish Matchmaker might just be my favorite so far! I loved the Irish setting, the characters, and the fun matchmaker plot. Oh, and the cover is gorgeous!🥰

I really liked both Catríona and Donal! Their romance was so sweet and fun.💗
Donal was such a good father to Sara. I loved watching as Catríona warmed up to them both. I loved Catríona’s warm, friendly personality— a perfect match to Donal’s steady, quiet one.🥰

I loved the country, Irish setting of this book as well as learning about traditions in Ireland!😍

I also really loved the faith content woven into this story!
The matchmaker plot was really fun as well!

In conclusion, this was such a sweet story and perfect to read in an evening! If you enjoy books that include:
🌸 a widower and his young daughter
🌸 he falls first
🌸 matchmaker plot
🌸 set in Ireland during the early 1900s
🌸 Irish traditions/history

Oh, it was fun to be back in Ireland with Author Jennifer Deibel and learning about this Irish tradition of matchmaking! I thoroughly enjoyed this story!

Donal Bunratty is the sweetest, most authentic man, only attending the matchmaking festival because it was his 9-year-old daughter Sara's birthday wish. Not his cup of tea at all.

After he meets Jimmy Daly the matchmaker in town, and reluctantly tells him his story, Jimmy refers him to his daughter the matchmaker. Catríona Daly no stranger to the business of love, wants to marry well during the matchmaking festival and get out of this town.

A journey of obstacles, faith, self-discovery and love that lovers of romantic historical fiction won't want to miss! Thank you to the author, publisher and Net galley for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.

Faith. Love. Swoony-worthy moments. Adorable child. Ireland. Matchmaker with big dreams. What more could you ask for?

Oh I had a lot of laughs at the expense of Caty in this book. I remember in high school, it seemed all the girls swooned over the guy they shouldn't have. The guy who was a jerk to put it nicely. And Caty does the same thing here. Andrew. Ugh his character was horrid. But sometimes you need a horrid non-hero to make the actual hero of the story shine. And shine he did.

Donal was so sweet, and didn't even realize it. I love the connection that Deibel wrote for him and his daughter. They had a bond that couldn't be broken. If I'm honest, sweet little Sara stole the show a couple of times. She was probably my favorite character (I mean just read the book for her rendition of Sermon on the Mount alone - it was perfect). Sara reminded me that often times we need to see things the way a child does. Innocent and with great faith. And the fact that you could see her meddling in her dad's love life was quite sweet (and funny!).

But what really sold this story, aside from the fact that Deibel instantly pulls you into the setting and plot and doesn't let you go, is the almost slow burning romance between Donal and Caty. I mean we as readers always know what's coming - especially by reading the book blurb. But to see the characters figure it out for themselves in true Deibel fashion is always a joy to read. Caty had a lot of growing to do. She needed to realize that being who she truly was, wasn't a bad thing. She didn't need to run away to be happy. She didn't need the glitz and glam of city life so to speak. I enjoyed watching her journey and realization.

Historical Romance fans will thoroughly enjoy this new novel from Jennifer Deibel. The setting, the characters, the romance, all of it is just charming. Perfect. Well except for the bad guy lol. But even he was well written. After all, stories need a good villain once in awhile.

This is my first book by Jennifer Deibel and I was immediately drawn to it by the beautiful breathtaking cover! I'm happy to say the story inside was just as beautiful. I loved this book so much!

Donal is a farmer and single dad to his 9 year old daughter Sara ever since his wife passed several years ago. On Sara’s birthday she makes a wish for her dad to attend the annual matchmaking festival to find a new wife. Catríona is the matchmaker assigned to set Donal up. She is also assigned to Andrew, who she decides she wants for herself. The more Catríona works with Donal the more drawn they are to each other.

I really enjoyed this story. It was so interesting to learn about the matchmaking tradition in Ireland during this period of time. Jennifer Deibel’s descriptions and writing were so vivid that I could clearly see everything and felt like I was part of the story. Little Sara was just a cutie and so mature for her age. I love how she immediately bonded with Catríona and they were friends before Catríona started to feel anything for Donal. It was fun to see Sara’s point of view as well as Donal and Catriona’s throughout the story. Donal was pretty serious as he had to be a farmer and sole caretaker of Sara; but it was fun to see his playful side start to come out as he spent more time around Catríona. The paint fight scene was so much fun and the first time we saw him start to loosen up. He also has an adorable dancing scene with his daughter that made me smile and warmed my heart. The romance between Donal and Catríona is wonderful and endearing. I loved their dance scene together. It's the first time they realize they are starting to have feelings for each other and it was just beautiful. I loved how honest Donal and Catríona were with each other and how they could just talk, laugh, and be together in a natural way. This was such a wonderful story filled with romance, drama, and great Christian content. I highly recommend it!

I am a sucker for inspirational historical romance - especially when it is set in Ireland. Having read Jennifer Deibel's other books, I knew I was in for a treat. While I didn't love this as much as some of her other titles, it was still a nice quick read. Catriona Daly is a matchmaker just like her father - she is too busy helping other people find their forever love that she never gets to find a man for herself. When she starts to work with Andrew Osbourne - a man of means and property she is determined to match him with herself so that she can get away from their small Irish town and be financially well off. Donal Banratty, is a single father with a barely functioning farm. He never seems to come out ahead no matter how hard he tries. When his daughter Sara begs him to go to the matchmaking festival so she can have a mother - he reluctantly agrees. If nothing else he could use an extra set of hands around the farm. He isn't looking for love - he's looking for a partner. Little do Catriona and Donal know that what they are looking for could be right in front of them.
