This was one of my favorites to read to my children when they were babies and very young toddlers. They still like it today as preschoolers although we don’t read it as often. The book is very simple with just a type of dog (and it’s “opposite”) on most sets of pages. Pairs begin with a simple hot/cold, but also includes sillier types of dogs like a lots of spots dog or toed in knots dog. All of the dogs are dachshunds and they are illustrated in many different fun colors. There are also rabbits and coffee mugs hidden throughout the pages that are fun to find. My husband even made up a little movement to go along with each of the dogs, which the kids love. This book just proves that a really simple idea when well executed can be really fun.
Hot Dog, Cold Dog by Frann Preston-Gannon is a favorite poetry book in our household! This book is intended for ages 3 to 7 years old but children younger can definitely enjoy this story. This book is about a group of wiener dogs who do fun things like visit the beach, play in the snow, dig in the dirt and play hide and seek. This book is filled with lessons in opposites. The rhyming and fun punch lines make the book exciting to young readers. The oversized pages, text and images are great for hands on children. It presents text and cursive, simple illustrations that describe each activity and a fun hidden paw print search. The text flows so easily and easy to remember. My daughter loves to finish the rhymes as I read! I think it is a great book to have on your bookshelf!
Toddler looooooves this book and all the dogs and bunnies she gets to point out. Checked it out a second time and she was definitely excited to see it again.
I found this randomly on Amazon while looking at some other kids books (Hello, my name is Sam, and I am addicted to books for both me AND my son. *waves*). I am a big time dog lover and this looked cute!
It met and exceeded my expectations! The text are moderately simple examples of opposites, using dachshunds and some other animal friends. But it isn't just "Hot" - "Cold" for the majority. There is a "Hide and Go Seek Dog," for instance. The book has a good rhythm that has my son (3.5) "reading" along with me often. The words are also simple enough that I think this would make a good beginning reader book.
My favorite thing about this is the illustrations - I think good art in a kids' picture book is incredibly important since most kids are being read to rather than reading themselves. :) The illustrations are colorful and really bring out the meaning of the words, like "Cold Dog" is in the snow, wearing a hat and scarf, with a mug of hot drink in front of him.
Which brings me to something else I love: in almost every scene, there is a mug and a dog bone. Often, there is also at least one bunny, too. My son has loved finding the bone and "cup of tea" since he was about 2. I think his favorite is the page where the "tea" is knocked over and spilling.
Overall, this is a seriously cute picture book with wonderful re-readability (also important since any parent is likely to be reading the same book over... and over... and over... and over).
Cute book with entertaining illustrations. The baby, 19 months old, loves all things dog, and he got a kick out of the pictures. The 3 year old is picking up on word play and she enjoyed the text/illustration humor. The 5 year old was able to read some of the text on her own and felt very proud. Three stars rather than four because the font changes periodically and switches to cursive which, though stylish, made reading more of a challenge for our emergent reader.
If you loved Eric Carle, you'll love Frann Preston Gannon. If you love dogs, (preferably dachshunds, as in my case) you will love Hot Dog, Cold Dog. Your kids will fall in love with these beautiful, bright illustrations and want to read it again and again. Meanwhile they'll be learning all about opposites. Definitely recommend for youngsters, my daughter is 5 and it is one of her favorites.
My 18 month old can't get enough of this oversized board book. I heard her chanting "hot dog, cold dog brrr; hot dog, cold dog brrr; hot dog, cold dog, brrr" in her crib before she fell asleep tonight, lol. For the little dog lovers in your life, this title is a must read.
