"Granted" tells the story of how a “Wish Giver” named Alexander meets a high school student named Natalie “Talie” Corte; an encounter which permanently alters both their lives.
Wish Givers can best be described as modern-day genies. These Wish Givers were once humans who have been cursed to endure a life of unending servitude to whomever touches their skin. When their masters die, they are set free until touched again, and it is only when they are unbound that they can be killed. Alexander has been passed down in one family from generation to generation until the death of his most recent master, after which he managed to escape. With his new-found freedom he has decided to end his life, finding death preferable to continuing his eternity of servitude.
Natalie happens upon Alex just before he can attempt to jump off of a freeway overpass. She ends up barely brushing her fingers against his, and he becomes her servant for the duration of her life.
Having only served older, very greedy men (who had all descended from the Spanish Conquistadors) serving a teenage girl was completely foreign to him. Both Alexander and Natalie find themselves unprecedentedly frustrated with the mundane quality of her hidden desires.
Alexander has the ability and the obligation to grant Talie’s every whim, both spoken and unspoken. He can hear her thoughts to the extent of what she wants, but no more than that. This presents Alex with an endless stream of idle wonderings, dreams, and fancies that amuse him to grant, but also make him feel his days have become quite tedious. However, Talie learns that having every request fulfilled in a flash can have the gravest of consequences.
First off I'll start by saying I picked up this book during a promo giveaway and it was definitely worth the read. I would really rate this book 3.5 stars but I round up since that isn't an option here. As a warning I will try to keep this review mostly spoiler free but there may be a few small things that sneak in here.
I'll start with what I liked and mostly that would be the wonderful quality of writing. The characters are very well fleshed out and even the minor characters are surprisingly detailed and you really get to know Talie and Alex and their world. I thought the dialogue stayed true to real life and was pretty believable for the most part. The story it's self is refreshing in that not to many YA titles have gone the genie route or wish givers as they are called here. I was slightly disappointed that more of the wish giver mythology wasn't explored but seeing as this is going to be a trilogy I would guess that is being saved for another book. We do get a few peaked into a much broader back story, one that I wish had been further explored here.
Onto the bad although there isn't much. This first book is very focused on building the relationship between Talie and Alex but unfortunately that's all there is for the entire middle of the book and without any real conflict it seemed to drag on far too long. The introduction of any real enemy happens very late in the book and there isn't as much character building as there could have been had they been introduced earlier. The climax of the book results in a du ex machina that comes out of no where and is a bit of a let down.
Overall I think this book could have benefited from being cut down about a 100 pages but that's mostly because I do not really care for straight up teen romances and I need more going on to really hold my attention. I will however be looking out for the next book as I would like to know more about Alex's background and to see how that story is played out. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of teen romance with a fantasy twist.
Great start to this new series by Corrien Killmer. At first I really envied Tallie and the power she had by having Alex tied to her but soon realized it could also have terrible consequences. I enjoyed Tallie's story as she adjusts to Alex and her first love. I can't wait to see if she finds the key to release and set Alex free.
