*Audiobook* Provides basic small talk reminders but won't recommend. Written almost like a VHS schoolroom PSA were your being talked at. Content about the books topic is lacking substance, repeating the same basic tips roughly every chapter. Most of the substance and tips of use are not till the end.

Also, near the end of the book, the author suggests, using Donald Trump's latest tweet as a conversion topic. "You might not agree with each other (about the tweet) but at least you'll have something to talk about". This goes against author's comments about cautioning the discussion of politics and using social awareness.

Thought this book would branch past the concept of small talk to include deeper, more meaningful conversation. However, the entirety of this book remained a surface level synopsis about basic human psychology that manifests itself in small talk. Nothing I didn’t know prior to reading this book, which was disappointing.

Some good insights, but 80% was obvious and repeated about 5 times. Throw in some contradictions and you have a... not very good book

As an introvert, small talk feels to me like a waste of time. A lot of pleasantries are rote and meaningless and very little information is exchanged. However, I recognize the importance of small talk for forming connections and leading into deeper conversations. It's unlikely for someone to jump directly into meaningful conversation with a stranger without first establishing rapport and a basic level of trust.

This is a very practical guide that explains why small talk is important in social situations, how to overcome insecurities in those situations, and concrete steps you can take to improve your small talk skills. It gave me a lot to think about in regards to why small talk can make me uncomfortable. the ways in which I try to avoid it, and why that is not a productive or long-term solution. I was able to pinpoint specific strategies that I can utilize going forward to feel more confident when engaging in conversations with friends and strangers.

I do wish the format of the book was slightly more narrative and not so list-oriented, with more examples and context in real-life situations. That would have made the topics easier to read and digest. After the first two chapters, I found myself skimming and mostly reading the headers to get the gist of the points for each section. The information presented in this book is valuable, but the execution is a little clunky, and it can feel a little repetitive/tedious after the first few chapters. It is a great reference book for when you need easy conversation starters.
