Warrior Queen

Rate this book
It's been almost three years since Gwen, a 21st century librarian, fell back through time to become King Arthur's Queen Guinevere. Arthur's drawn the legendary sword from the stone and beaten his jealous brother. The only thing left to do is prove to his fellow kings that he's worthy of the title High King of all Britain. Not an easy task. At the same time, the countdown through the list Gwen knows of Arthur's legendary twelve battles is flying past, bringing the thirteenth, fatal Camlann, ever nearer. With history tracking so close to legend, all of Gwen's fears seem likely to come true. While Arthur is away fighting Irish invaders in the far west, messengers arrive from the north, requesting urgent help. Gwen is forced to lead a party of her husband's men across the River Severn in search of Arthur's army. But she's heading towards the inevitable realization that there are no true victors in war.
Can there be a happy ending for Gwen and Arthur, or is it written in stone that he must die?

AWARD-WINNING author, Fil Reid's first novel won a GOLD medal at the Readers' Favorites Awards in 2022.

Fil lives in Cornwall with her extremely supportive husband and where she's only minutes from the sea. She has a rescue dog from Romania called Bella.

She writes historical fiction and has a six book time travel series, GUINEVERE, out in which the heroine is a 21st-century girl kidnapped back to the Dark Ages to become King Arthur's Queen Guinevere. Lots of fun plot twists mixed in with some of the well-known and also the lesser known legends.

Her poor husband mostly sees the back of her head as she sits at the computer writing.
When she's not writing (which she does pretty much all of the time) she likes to walk the dog, visit sites of historical interest (preferably those connected to her writing), read, and sew.

She has Asperger's Syndrome, but she sees that as a plus as it helps her to be very focused on what she does.

I have to admit that I have never given King Arthur and/or Guinevere much thought. Of course I've heard the legend of King Arthur and his sword and I know Guinevere played a big part in all of it, but until I read this book, I didn't realize just how important she was. There are doubts that either Arthur or Guinevere even existed, so to think that they did made for a lively story.

Legend or not, I loved King Arthur. He was strong, handsome, a good and faithful husband who loved his wife and family (stepbrother excluded), and a fair and honest High King. Guinevere was most definitely his right hand. He knew she was from another time and respected her point of view on many topics and treated her as an equal rather than property. She angered him a few times, but it never lasted long.

Guinevere was the warrior queen. She was able to defend herself and lead men probably as well as her husband, but she never let it go to her head and she never usurped his authority. Even if she was a warrior, she was a mother, a wife, a friend, and loved Arthur with so much passion that it leaped off the pages, even with the closed door scenes.

I gave this book four stars for two reasons and both due to the blurb.

1. I hate it when I pick up a book that's in a series only to find out that I needed to read the previous books. There was no mention of that in the blurb. The author did a pretty good job of trying to bring the reader up to speed, but I know I missed so much. I missed Guinevere doing the time travel, meeting Arthur, the two of them getting married, and how was it she was so close to Merlin? I know she was madly in love with Arthur, but I got the feeling she may have been a little in love with him, too. I wasn't totally lost, but I would've enjoyed the story much more had I read the first three books.

2. Quote from the blurb:

Can there be a happy ending for Gwen and Arthur, or is it written in stone that he must die?

Why ask the question if you aren't going to answer it? The story ends with a bit of a cliffhanger, but it has nothing to do that question. I kept reading because I wanted to know and now I never will.

This really was an amazing book. There was war, angst, grief, and love. I chuckled a few times, cried more than I thought possible, and cared about the characters, especially Merlin. I want to be his friend.

This would have been a five star read had the blurb not been disingenuous and misleading. The previous books in the series really should be read before reading this one. Writing the blurb is harder than writing the novel itself, but so much lies on it and I feel a little cheated that I didn't get the answer to that question.

Still a great read!

I received a pre-release copy of the book. This review honestly expresses my thoughts after having read it.

Arthur is called away with his army to deal with Irish raiders along the western coast. When news arrives of a Saxon invasion in the north Gwen leads a detachment of warriors from Din Cadan to find him and deliver the news. Battles ensue and Gwen acquits herself well. These battles are vividly described less in terms of individual actions than the sensory and emotional aspects—the sounds, the smells (sometimes so strong they are like tastes), fear, chaos, the injured, the mangled, the dead. Gwen and Arthur carry on, returning home in triumph as well as suffering the tragedies of the deaths of friends and loved ones.

Gwen’s passion for Arthur continues to drive her and form the core of her decisions and actions. In the end they fight together against Arthur’s enemies and prevail.

As in the previous books, setting is a major part of the story. Details and descriptions immerse the reader in the primitive and half ruined land that was Britain in the Dark Ages. Places, people, and characters are vivid and memorable.

I recommend this fourth book in the Guinevere series highly.

It has been a couple of years since Gwen became the legendary Queen Guinevere, wife of King Arthur. In the 4th installment of this great series, Gwen truly embraces her role to the point of leading a small group of warriors, hence the title. She still can’t fight well, but her courage is shown in many ways, including decisions in support of Arthur. She’s definitely not a “damsel in distress” anymore, even though her life (and of those she loves) might be in danger at times.
My favorite part is Fil’s masterful use of descriptions that pull the reader into the world she created, making us feel like we’re walking alongside her cast of characters and seeing how the Dark Ages might’ve been. And her (different) take on well known legendary characters is highly enjoyable.

love this book

Couldn’t put it down. Loved the plotting and fast pace. And it’s obvious that the author has been to the sites via the details in the book. Can’t wait for the next one.

Guinevere goes to battle

In book 4 of the Guinevere series, we get to see our queen take up arms and fight in battle whilst trying to find Arthur's camp. We see the battle of York, meet Old King Cole and his wife, and Merlin finds himself pulled in two directions with the birth of Nimuë. Another action-packed Arthurian drama as the high king of Britain marches his way into battle and into history.

Wow wow! I just stumbled upon Warrior Queen. Usually I read the description and pass because if its a book in an already established series. But not this time! I was very intrigued by the cover, description, and also that it was the fourth book. I immediately started reading Dragon Ring and was hooked! I finished all four books in five days! Normally I do not like retellings, but this one was way different than I thought it would be. It adds so much historical information to the story, which makes it so unique because of the differences in the Arthurian legends. I initially thought this was going to be some knockoff Outlander, but it was so good! I love the relationship between Arthur, Gwen and Merlin, they really have evolved as characters. Gwen thinks she knows how King Arthur's story goes from her 21st century knowledge, but there is so much more to it. She lives in fear of changing the future but she also does not want Arthur to meet his end, this confliction continues through the series and I am curious to how this ends. This book does leave off on a cliffhanger, but each one in the series has ended similarly. I will be eagerly awaiting the next book, and am super excited for a reread of the series when it is released. I received an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Warrior Queen by Fil Reid is the next installment in the story of Queen Guinevere, wife of King Arthur. It is years now since Merlin had arranged to have Gwen transported from modern day to the 6th Century. Gwen and Arthur have been married for years and in addition to their son, she has given birth to a daughter. It is two years since Arthur had been elected High King and things are going relatively smoothly. The Saxons (Yellow Hairs) have been attacking the coast and Arthur and his army have gone to help deal with them. Gwen is left at home and worries as she watches Medraut (Mordred) become a more and more unpleasant child. His mother, Arthur’s sister, Morgawse is blind to it and given the legend as well as her son’s safety, Gwen is concerned. Merlin, who had been bewitched by Morgana has yet to see his daughter, but wishes so mightily. Gwen is about to prove herself the Warrior Queen as she, Merlin, and 60 men try to follow Arthur to request his assistance against the Yellow Hairs in another direction.

It is an exciting read, full of battle as well as deceit as the time draws nearer that legend says Arthur will be cut down in battle. Gwen knows just enough to be dangerous, as the old saying goes, but not enough detail to be truly helpful. Merlin is despondent about his daughter and his supposed relationship with Morgana. He is not the Merlin we know from legend, but an intriguing character none-the-less: younger and more powerful in many ways. This is a dynamic story, filling in many of the blanks from the legends we have all heard. It places Gwen in a role of supremacy, along with Arthur and is so much more than the Gwen we’ve all known. Reid has done the fiction reading populace a service with this fully fleshed out version of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere, giving us all a story to love.

I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Warrior Queen by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. #Netgalley #Dragonblade #FilReid #WarriorQueen

I received this book as a Xmas present. This is the fourth book in the 6-book Guinevere series. As catch-up: Gwen, daughter of an Arthurian historian, has been magically transported back to the Dark Ages where she meets Arthur and becomes Queen Guinevere. She is troubled by her partial knowledge of what is to happen in the future. Gwen is aware of Arthur’s legendary twelve battles but does not know when or where the final, fatal battle will occur.
In this volume, Gwen follows Arthur as he conducts two ultimately successful campaigns. British kinglets barely contain their antagonism while fighting off invaders from overseas. There is both triumph and tragedy as some characters don’t survive, bringing Gwen face to face with the brutal realities of war. Various legendary characters are brought to life, and Reid depicts extremely well the Dark Ages landscape of Britain, with its forests, swamps and crumbling Roman towns.
I enjoyed reading this book. It's a page-turning read, and the series is vividly written, clearly well researched and a worthy addition to the already voluminous literature about Arthur and his world.

Yet another wonderful book by Fil Reid! Sometimes I can't relate to Gwen in the books because I'm a stay-at-home mom with a large family. I'd never leave my son the way Gwen left hers, but that's not a judgement of the book, Gwen, or anyone else, it's simply a statement. And honestly, since it's fiction, I'm glad Gwen left her son to travel to battles so that I could experience them with her. I can't remember if that's in this specific book or not. I've read the entire series once, some of the earlier books more than once and I tend to get the details mixed up now and then.
The whole series is a page turner that I couldn't put down. In fact, after reading it, I had to take a few month's break from reading altogether so I could get caught up on everything else I used to do in my spare time. :)
Fil Reid is one of my new favorite authors and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next! Personally, I'm hoping for Merlin's story. But with happy endings and a happy middle and beginning because most of the time, his story seems way too sad for me.

Fil Reid's fourth book of her Guinevere series is just as exciting as the first three. From the moment Arthur is finally proclaimed High King through all the battles and his attempt to unify a kingdom, the story continues to be a page turner.
In this book, Gwen, now the mother of two, must leave her home to lead a small army to aid Arthur in fighting off the latest invasion of the fearsome ‘Yellow Hairs (Vikings). The couple cope with the horrors of war, the treachery of deceit and the loss of friends.
As usual, not all their enemies come from invasion. When some of the jealous and ambitious subjects plot behind their High King’s back, Arthur turns the tables with surprising plans.
Reid’s meticulous research of all the Arthurian myths and legends, as well as the fifth century life and customs, brings a realness and believability to her writing. She always leaves me wanting more.

Fil Reid truly brings the magical world of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere to life in this series of books. Legend or real, the author weaves a story that captures your imagination and makes you truly want to beleive that Arthur and Guinevere were real people!

In this installment, Guinevere proves to be quite the warrior and continues to protect Arthur in the best way she can. Now with a second child, it's a bit harder to leave for weeks or months on end to follow her husband in battle but she's determined to stay at Arthur's side. There are some scenes in which you will need a tissue...I found myself bawling my heart out. Life certainly was not easy in the 5th century and between the many battles, many loved ones lost their lives.

I recommend starting with book #1 since they are not really stand-alone books and to better understand what's going on, you should read the whole series in order. Now on to book #5!!!

This is a first time read for me by this author, but it is I believe the fourth book of the series. My recommendation would be to read the books in order, as it was a bit hard for me to get into it in the beginning, having not read the previous books. But once I did I really enjoyed it. I had never really given thought to King Arthur and Guinevere, other than hearing about the legend. The author did a wonderful job of telling the story and I was pulled in from the beginning. She did a nice job of bringing the story and the time period to life and I was engrossed till the end. It's fast paced story full of plot twists that kept me turning the pages, anxious to see what happens next. A great action and drama packed romance that was a thrill to read!
I received a complimentary copy from Dragonblade Publishing and Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.

Uncaged Review: Arthur has been named High King. This time out, as Arthur is away on a campaign, messengers come and request help. Gwen leads a party north to find Arthur, only to find he’s not where they had hoped. This is the 4th book out of 6 in this series, and this time out, there will be a lot of danger, and some heartbreaking moments. I had to actually set the book down and walk away to deal with the emotions I was feeling in one spot of the book. The author does not hold back the brutality in this world, it wouldn’t feel as real if she had. Gwen proves herself a true warrior queen in this book and believes it’s her destiny.

This ends with a couple of surprising alliances as we head to book 5. The author has truly brought the myth and the legend that is King Arthur and these times to life. Reviewed by Cyrene

The fourth installment of the Guinevere series continues the story of Gwen, a young 21st century librarian who was whisked back to the fifth century via Merlin's magic and the Glastonbury Tor to become King Arthur's famous wife. It is very well written, with amazing imagery and vivid descriptions that made me feel I was right there in that colorful and often horrific time with her. The author has done intensive research on King Arthur's era and uses the knowledge Gwen has herself, along with the knowledge that the myths and legends about Arthur in her own time may or may not have happened, to create a story that is full of tension and drama. The characters are very well rounded and believable, and the historical details make it a fascinating read. I'm looking forward to the next book!

In Book Four of the Guinevere series, Gwen finds herself leading an army for Arthur. While there is no lack of excitement and suspense, the story’s main theme revolves around the costs of war and how even a fifth-century king, much less a 21st-century woman, can cope with the inevitable losses. Meanwhile, plots thicken, the burden of foreknowledge intensifies, and the increasingly arrogant child Medraut disturbs Gwen’s dreams. Will the life of the historical Arthur end the way the legends do?

Arthurian, Time Travel Adventure

Gwen traveled to King Arthur's time and became his queen. In this fourth book in the series, we follow Gwen and Arthur as they navigate the challenging times in which they live. There is treachery, battles to fight, and dangerous adventure. There are two more books left in the series after this one, so we won’t know Gwen and Arthur's destinies. Will the Arthurian legend be true, or will Arthur and Gwen have a different future than the legend tells? I look forward to reading the rest of their story.

A sense of adventure and impending doom carries throughout this entire series without really letting up. The Warrior Queen is no exception. As time passes, Gwen is becoming stronger and stronger as a character which is my favorite part of this book. And you also can't help but appreciate the research and knowledge that Fil Reid pores into her stories. A true gem for fans of medieval romance and Arthurian legend.

(Review of an ARC)
Another great instalment in this series! It has cute moments (Arthur throwing Amhar like an aeroplane), tragic ones (I'm still crying over Rhiwallon's death), and dramatic ones (like the assassination attempt). I also love the way the legends are referenced but altered, so readers are left guessing which stories will turn out to be true.

A fast-paced story in this fourth book in the series, full of action and adventure with plenty of personal drama and battles. The saga of Guinevere continues in King Arthur's time, a time that comes alive with rich details and dialog. The language was fresh and skilled and kept this reader galloping along. Now I'm looking forward to a fifth book, if we are so lucky.

more of the same

This is book 4 in a series about Guinevere-king Arthur’s queen.
Alone, the book is an adventure in medievalism. As the fourth story of Guinevere and Arthur, it was rather tedious and repetitive.
I’m disappointed that I purchased the entire series because so far they’ve been the same story over and over albeit with different battle names.

Queen Guinevere proves to be a real warrior queen and wants to be involved in all battles with King Arthur, she doesn’t want to stay behind, doing things she detests, like sewing!

Now that Arthur has pulled the sword from the stone and beaten his older brother, he is now the High King.

This is another exciting story in the series. I would recommend starting from book 1, although the author does do well at giving details from the previous books.

I found this to be an engaging story and the descriptive writing always holds my attention.

I did find this book to be an emotional one and I don’t mind admitting that I did have some tears while reading.

The attention to details is fantastic and you can tell that the author has an extensive knowledge of the sites, both from the past and now. This is storytelling at its best.

I've read the previous books in this series, and I really enjoy getting to follow characters for more than one book. It's satisfying seeing the relationship between Gwen and Arthur continue to develop as they have children and face more struggles and hardships. This book does a great job of balancing the flashy action parts with quieter, emotional moments between the characters. I received a pre-release copy in exchange for an honest review!

This is book 4 in the Guinevere series and so far my favourite.
I came into this series blind I didn't read the blurb and I don't know a lot about the dark ages or King Arthur.
But I am glad I picked up these books.
Guinevere is from the future and Merlin brings her back in time to fulfil a prophecy to unite
Britain.
These books must be read in order as there is lots of information and relationships that you need to keep track off.
The characters are well developed and so is the story, the amount of research this author must have done absolutely boggles my mind.
This book is ultimately a love story but the accounts of what every day life and war was like in the Dark ages is what brings this book series alive for me.
I have just finished book 5 in the series (review to follow soon) and the series is far from over.
I would highly recommend this series.
Thank you to Netgalley, Dragonblade publishing and the author for an advanced copy of this book for an honest review.
