From selling camisoles to solving crimes, the ladies of the Sweet Nothings lingerie shop in Paris, Tennessee, will make this Valentine’s a day to remember…
For Valentine’s Day, Emma Taylor and her aunt Arabella have organized a special evening for men only to shop for their sweethearts in the Sweet Nothings lingerie shop, complete with champagne and hors d’oeuvres. But when a former valentine shows up, Aunt Arabella is not her usual bubbly self.
Art dealer Hugh Granger is still a charmer, though. He invites the women to a ball he’s having to celebrate his birthday and his return to Paris, Tennessee. But when Granger is pushed from the balcony, it paints a sinister picture for Aunt Arabella, who gets framed… for her old flame’s murder.
Peg grew up in a New Jersey suburb about 25 miles outside of New York City. After college, she moved to the city where she managed an art gallery owned by the son of the artist Henri Matisse. When her first daughter, Francesca, arrive, the new family moved back to the New Jersey suburbs where her second daughter, Annabelle, was born.
After her husband died, Peg remarried and her new husband took a job in Grand Rapids, Michigan where they now live (on exile from New Jersey, she likes to joke). Peg managed to segue from the art world to marketing and is now the manager of marketing communications for a company that provides services to seniors.
Her greatest love though as always been writing - particularly mysteries! She has two cozy mystery series from Berkley Prime Crime: The Gourmet De-Lite series set in Connecticut and featuring Gigi Fitzgerald, who provides gourmet diet meals to a select group of clients, and the Sweet Nothings Vintage Lingerie series, written as Meg London, set in Paris, Tennessee with Emma Taylor who finds murder and mayhem in this quiet country town.
As for pets - she has a schizophrenic cat (really!) named Frazzle and a Westhighland White Terrier, Reggie, who is desperately in need of losing a few pounds. But you know what they say: If your dog is overweight, it means YOU aren't getting enough exercise!
When she's not writing, Peg can usually be found cooking, which she loves. When asked to bring a dish to a potluck she invariably opts to bring dessert - partly because she loves making sweet dishes and partly because she and her husband always manage to be late so there's no point in putting them in charge of appetizers!
I enjoyed this entry in the series and was sorry that it is the last book. I really like the characters in this series. The mystery was good and kept me guessing.
A Fatal Slip is the third book in the A Sweet Nothings Lingerie Mystery series.
Valentine Day is approaching and Aunt Arabella and Emma have planned a "Male Only" evening, to purchase something for the Valentines. The response is better than they expected, but when Hugh Granger walks in, Aunt Arabella gets a panicked look on her face. Hugh is someone that Arabella had a relationship with a number years ago. Hugh is a jet-setter in the art gallery world and has decided to settle down in Paris, TN at his horse farm. To celebrate this, his wife, Sabrina, is planning a huge party at the Beau, a fashionable hotel in area. Emma talks her aunt into attending party, to only have Hugh fall off the balcony to the ballroom floor, dead from a gunshot. This happening during a fireworks display while everyone was on the patio.
Arabella becomes a person of interest, as she can't remember where she was when it happened. So naturally, Emma is compelled to put her sleuth hat on and do a little sleuthing. Hugh's wife, Sabrina, had left the party, his daughter, Joy, had just had a big argument with her father that day, his son, Jackson, has been arguing about bringing their art business into the 21st century. Then Emma learns that the Granger Art Gallery might be selling forged works of art and possibly a disgruntled buyer was upset enough to do away with Hugh.
Another great story and believable and interesting characters to satisfy the reader.
I can't forget Pierre, Arabella's French bulldog, is back to offer his own brand of cuteness. Also is daughter, Bette. Pierre does his best to ignore her, but his best isn't usually good enough. But being a good dad, he lets her torment him.
Definitely looking forward to book four in this delightful series.
a-fatal-slip-sweet-nothings-lengerie-meg-londonEmma and Arabella have struck retail gold once again with their men only Valentine’s Day sale, as the men that usually avoid their lingerie shop timidly come into shop for their lady loves. But neither Emma nor Arabella expected a blast from Arabella’s past to come walking through the door!
One of Arabella’s former boyfriend’s, wealthy art dealer, Hugh Granger is back in town, and his wife is throwing him a huge birthday party at an upscale hotel to celebrate! But when Hugh is murdered at his own party, Arabella becomes the number one suspect, forcing Emma to mount her own investigation to find out exactly what happened!
This is another cute addition to this cozy mystery series. Emma and Liz are their usual nosey selves taking up the task of working for the Grangers so they have better access to the rich family and to give themselves more opportunity to snoop! I was kind of surprised how openly they discussed their snooping to one another while on the job, I’d be too paranoid I was under surveillance of some kind, but they had no qualms about it. I was also shocked to see how chatty the Granger’s maid was! You’d think working for such a wealthy family, that’s she’d know how to keep her mouth shut! But without her, Emma wouldn’t have much to work with in her investigation!
We also got to meet Emma’s mom, Priscilla, in this installment. Priscilla really made Emma second-guess her life in small town Paris, making her wonder if she could be truly happy living there forever. But between what’s going on in her mom’s personal life and another loved one getting into an accident, Emma quickly makes up her mind and realizes what’s important!
Brian and Emma are finally a couple now! Although they still seem to be taking their sweet time, things are finally starting to happen and there are hints of kicking things into gear for the duo! Finally!
Overall, this was a good installment in the series. It wasn’t blow your socks off caliber, but it kept my interest, and the story was cute. I think any cozy mystery fan will definitely enjoy it.
Aww, that ending!! I wish this series was being continued. I didn't really figure it out until it was revealed, which was nice. I really do like the characters. Just didn't like the fact that Brian was injured and not once, after he left the hospital, did Emma go and visit him until his sister asked her over to supper. What kind of girlfriend is that?
Emma is an interesting character and Meg does a good job with the other characters that interact with Emma. She almost loses her boyfriend to an accident, the main director is murdered, and she needs to keep ahead of the killer.
Meg London brings readers the third book in her Sweet Nothings Lingerie Mystery series, A Fatal Slip. The past is coming back to haunt Aunt Arabella when she becomes a suspect in the murder of a former lover. As always London fans will be treated to plenty of sleuthing along with a Men's Only day at the lingerie shop. Just in time for Valentine's Day, this novel is a real treat. Who doesn't want something tantalizing and full of surprises?
What I liked:
As always I found the overall theme of this series enjoyable. Who would have thought of having a cozy mystery series, revolve around lingerie. LOL! Apparently, Meg London did and readers are reaping the benefits. I like all of the interesting things that go on at the shop in each installment of the series. This time readers are treated to a Men's Only day, where members of the male persuasion get to shop for their ladies for Valentine's day. What a clever idea, for a real lingerie shop, as well as, a good cozy mystery. This is still like any other cozy, clean and without a lot of bad language or sex, but it gets a little more catty than most cozies get, just by having a risque theme. It was super fun to read about.
Aunt Arabella never ceases to amaze and this time she's gotten herself into to serious trouble. When a former flame shows up for Men's Only day, Arabella is taken aback. When said lover ends up falling to his death during his own Birthday party, she ends up a suspect. I cannot for the life of me see Aunt Arabella as a murder but it was a pretty convincing case in some ways. I loved the fact that London made her lover an art collector and wealthy. I always thought she had a few skeletons in her closet, but I was really surprised at the kind of man she was in to at one point. Readers are sure to find this aspect of the book very enjoyable.
I didn't have a lot of trouble figuring this one out. In fact I knew who the killer was early on. Usually that's a bad thing, but sometimes is more about the journey. Readers will love getting to know more about Aunt Arabella's past in this novel. They will also like the fact that Emma's relationship with Brian is starting to take off. This may not be the best book in the series so far, but it has a lot of good points. It moves the series along nicely. There were a good amount of suspects and the motive was believable. Fans of London's work are sure to enjoy it.
What I didn't like:
As I said, I figured this one out quick. There were twists and turns but I think it will be a bit too obvious to most readers who the killer is. There were other things that I really enjoyed about the book though, so there were redeeming qualities and I don't think it is such a bad thing to know who the killer was on occasion.
Bottom Line:
This was a good book, but not necessarily a great book. The reader learns a lot of interesting background information, but the mystery itself fizzles a little bit. I love the theme and Aunt Arabella and Pierre are a hoot, so I know the next one will probably be even better.
Since I started up another cozy mystery binge this spring, I’ve gone back to another series I had forgotten about, Meg London’s A Sweet Nothings Lingerie Mystery series (or trilogy).
I forgot to pick Book Three: A Fatal Slip up since its release last year. I was afraid I might have fallen out of love with the cast (i.e. MC Emma, her aunt Arabella, boyfriend Brian, and co.); thankfully I didn’t, it felt like coming home to Paris, Tennessee. :)
So in this third (hopefully not final) book, Emma is caught up in a murder again – and once more she’s appointed herself an amateur sleuth because a loved one is under the flames of suspicion.
The plotting in this book through me for a loop as to who the killer might be until near the end when it became obvious, and oddly there was a lot of suspects who still weren’t in the clear – it sorta put a bad flavour to my mouth as the author delved a bit more into the subconscious of humans and it wasn’t as black-and-white as the first two books in this series.
I liked the romance between Arabella and her beau, and Emma and Brian! I’m a sucker for love…
Though TBH I didn’t shine to Brian in the first book. He slowly grew on me in the second, and now I was rooting for him and Emma, especially when Emma’s posh mother comes to town and she doesn’t exactly approve of Brian’s down-to-earth homely self.
Overall a great layered mystery – it’s never any fun when you can guess who’s the killer in the first few chapters; a wonderful ensemble of cast, pacing and conflict resolution.
I do have to warn readers though that this third book ends off with a bit of a teaser cliffhanger where Emma and Brian are concerned. (*ahem*ZOMGishegoingtopropose?!*cough, cough*)
If you’re not into cliffies so much, particularly where love is concerned, AND it doesn’t look like there’s a sign of a Book 4 in the Sweet Nothings series, then keep this in mind.
Otherwise read the book for its main conflict, the mystery, because you’re sure to be pleased by it!
Brava to Meg London for out doing herself with A FATAL SLIP and making this series a must have for any mystery fan.
The Sweet Nothings Lingerie Mystery series captured my attention on page one of the first book MURDER UNMENTIONABLE. While reading the second book, LACED WITH POISON, I knew I was in love. Having said that, now that I have read book number three, A FATAL SLIP, put a ring on my finger and seal the deal because I am never leaving this series.
Ms. London has again provided us with characters that we care about. This installment of the series is filled with more mystery and intrige than the first two books, something that I would have said was impossible. The main plot is focused on who killed Hugh Granger and Emma trying to clear Aunt Arabella's name. But there are several sub plots and discoveries that had my head spinning (in a good way) and wondering what would happen next.
Get to your local bookstore or online book seller and buy A FATAL SLIP now. If you haven't read the first two books in the series, that's okay. You wont have any problem following the story. But then again, while you're buying this book, get the first two and read them all! And pick up a set for friend. They'll love you for it!
I read the first two books of this series quite a long time ago so I don’t remember the characters or anything.
I really have to stop doing that.
This was a pretty decent mystery. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out who the killer was. The characters are all likeable. It has the small town charm that I love in cozy mysteries.
However for some reason I just coulnd’t connect with this book. I think that’s why I gave it two stars instead of three.
It was a well written cozy mystery, but it just wasn’t for me.
I do think though that fans of cozy mysteries will enjoy this story if they are into fashion, art and Paris
Emma Taylor is still helping her Aunt Arabella at Sweet Nothings, Arabella's lingerie shop when the murder of her aunt's old beau brings her to the center of the investigation. Arabella is viewed as a possible suspect. Emma takes a part time job cataloging paintings for the son of the murder victim, Both father and son were thriving art dealers. When suspicions of forgery are brought, the story stakes a deadly turn. This was quite an enjoyable read. s
It wasn't mind-boggling, but it was still cute. The author is making a slow and steady progress of slowly getting better with each installment. If you liked book 2, Laced with Poison, you'll like this one as well.
This is 3rd in a series about Emma Taylor and her aunt Arabella who runa lingerie shop. Art Granger invites them to a ball and he is pushed to his death. Arunt Aravella is framed for the murder of her former flame. Emma has to figure out who did it and save her aunt,
Although this was a quick read, it's one of the better cozy mysteries I've read lately. The story was straightforward and fun. Can't wait for the next installment.
