Cheese Shop owner Charlotte Bessette’s life seems quieter than ever with her fiancé out of town and her cousin Matthew and his children out of the house. But before she can put up her feet and enjoy a glass of chardonnay, Matthew asks her to play host to Noelle Adams, a bright sommelier visiting to help grow business for the local winery.
An affable wine aficionado, Noelle is paired well with the cheese expert Charlotte—but something seems to be troubling the secretive houseguest, and Charlotte’s life is upended when she finds the sparkling woman dead. Between Noelle’s hotheaded ex, the cagey owners of the winery, its jaded manager, and a wily reporter, Charlotte has her pick of suspects, but she needs to act fast—this is a mystery that only gets more dangerous with age.
Avery Aames, author of A Cheese Shop Mystery for Berkley Prime Crime, is the pseudonym for Daryl Wood Gerber. Daryl created the format for the popular sitcom, "Out of this World" and has won awards for her screenplays. She also writes short stories and suspense novels. Not one to simply read and cook, she tends to look for adventure. She has hitchhiked around Ireland by herself and she has jumped out of a perfectly good airplane.
Good story, good mystery. I like the characters and setting, even if I'm not sure I would want to try any of the cheeses mentioned. I was right there with Charlotte with my detecting skills.
Cheese, wine and murder; the perfect cozy mystery trifecta. Avery Aames, in my mind, is one of two authors I consider “the cozy mystery world’s Martha Stewart.” She has a way of introducing us to the finer things in life by interspersing wine and cheese knowledge throughout the story line. The recipes included are also divine and worth trying. I always learn something new while being entertained by this series. Throughout the story there are unexpected twists, plenty of suspects, and general good sleuthing to track down all the clues. I also enjoy that there is a nice balance of humor. Most of the characters from the previous books are back to help Charlotte investigate the murder of newcomer, Noelle. She is a sommelier extraordinaire who is starting a new job at the local winery and she has a mysterious past that leaves more questions than answers. You will find yourself liking this character and wishing she wasn’t the victim.
I really love Charlotte’s family. They are always supportive whether it is at Fromagerie Bessette, at the community theater or trying to find a killer. Memere, Pepere, her cousin Matthew, her nieces, her fiancé Jordan and don’t forget Rags are some of the fascinating personalities woven into the fabric of this series. There is never a dull moment. The Cheese Shop is a gathering place and most residents of this small Ohio town are frequent visitors. Charlotte’s friends and co workers as well as the townspeople are equally entertaining in their supporting roles. You quickly will find yourself invested in the characters and lost within the pages. I am so sad that this series came to an end in 2016 after book seven. Thankfully, I have two more books on my shelf so my journey with the Bessette family will last a bit longer. This series is definitely worth checking out!
Altro buon libro. Siamo al quinto della serie e ormai ne mancano solo due al termine. Infatti, come ho deciso di iniziare questa serie, è stato deciso di terminarla col settimo volume: la mia solita fortuna...
Another good book. This is the fifth in the series and now they are only two at the end. In fact, as I decided to start this series, it was decided to end it with the seventh volume: my luck is no good...

Warning this book will make you very hungry for CHEESE!!! Do yourself a favor and pick some up with some crackers and a bottle of wine before you start reading!!!
I love Charlotte’s family. They are always busy whether is be at Fromagerie Bessette, or directing the community play or finding a killer. There is never a dull moment. The Cheese Shop is really a gathering place and most residents of this small Ohio town stop there at least once a week. It is also a hot tourist stop. In this installment one of those visitors just happens to be a murderer.
Charlotte’s assistant just cracks me up as she tries to help Charlotte find the killer. You see she has a vast knowledge of criminal behavior and crime solving from her hours of watching television shows. Her heart is in the right place and sometimes she does come up with a valid point but she does much better keeping the Cheese Shop in order.
Avery writes a very tasty mystery for all of us to enjoy. I always want to savor her stories like a glass of fine wine but I just can’t. She grabs us from the start and pulls us in and before you know it you are at the last page and checking out the recipes. There were unexpected twists, plenty of suspects, and general good sleuthing to track down all the clues. There was also a nice balance of humor.
But the cheese, oh my, the cheese!! In between the lines of this wonderful mystery are descriptions of so many varieties of cheese. I want to try them all. Be prepared to make a list. I bet the author loves the research part of writing these mysteries. When she says “SAY CHEESE” she means it.
Charlotte Bessette can’t turn down a request from her cousin, Matthew, to offer a temporary residence to an old friend of his. After all, Charlotte has plenty of space available since Matthew and his children recently moved out of her home. Matthew’s friend, Noelle Adams, is an up and coming sommelier who is moving to Providence, Ohio, to help create some excitement about the offerings at a local winery, Shelton Nelson Winery. Charlotte instantly likes the vibrant young woman and her presence helps alleviate some of the quiet that has suddenly entered Charlotte’s life, particularly with her fiancé being out of town. Meanwhile, business is brisk at Charlotte’s own shop, Fromagerie Bessette, and Charlotte is busy assisting with the various local events occurring. Charlotte isn’t prepared to find herself embroiled in a murder investigation but when Noelle is killed in Charlotte’s home, Charlotte is determined to find out who is behind her death.
DAYS OF WINE AND ROQUEFORT is the fifth book in Avery Aames’ Cheese Shop Mystery series. I’ve read and loved Avery Aames’ books under her Daryl Wood Gerber name but this was my first venture into her Cheese Shop Mystery series. It will definitely not be my last! I particularly want to know more about Charlotte’s fiancé, Jordan, as we only get to see brief glimpses of him in DAYS OF WINE AND ROQUEFORT.
Avery Aames infuses warmth and love into her characters, as the relationships between the characters really do make DAYS OF WINE AND ROQUEFORT such a blast to read. Rebecca, Charlotte’s assistant, had me in stitches with her extensive knowledge of police and criminal procedures- all gleaned from television, of course! However, it was seeing the various town interactions, such as the outrageous feud between Prudence Hart and Sylvie Bessette, that made DAYS OF WINE AND ROQUEFORT and the town of Providence truly have that home-town feeling. Charlotte and her sometimes quite nosey friends and family fit right in- and I love the hijinks that ensue!
DAYS OF WINE AND ROQUEFORT is sheer fun! From the scrumptious recipes to the warmth and sometimes hilarious repartee between the characters, DAYS OF WINE AND ROQUEFORT is an absolute delight! My husband is the cheese lover in our household but Avery Aames has definitely tempted me with a couple of the tasty offerings in Fromagerie Bessette! I look forward to catching up on the Cheese Shop Mystery series as Avery Aames has me hooked! Easily recommended!
"Hell's Key" was the final utterance from Noelle Adams. Noelle was a friend of Charlotte Bessette’s cousin Matthew, who was staying with Charlotte while she got settled in her new job at Sheldon Nelson Winery. Now Noelle is dead in Charlotte’s Garage and the Snoop Club goes into full swing!!! Murder, mystery, mayhem, a engaging plot, wine, cheese, twists and turns are the ingredients for a story you will definitely want to read. Welcome to Providence, Ohio and the world of the Bessette Family. Description is deftly woven into the story. You will feel as if you are part of the family. All the characters are vivid, colorful and well defined. There are many suspects: the dead woman’s short tempered ex, a scheming reporter, the calculating owners of the winery, the suspicious manager, the manager’s withdrawn wife. Each character adds their own flavor to the story. The dynamics between some of the characters was captivating such as with Charlotte and the police chief, Matthew with Sylvie, Prudence with Grandmere, Prudence with Sylvie, Sylvie with the reporter. Rags, the cat, Rocket and Agatha both dogs add to the story. This is Book 5 in the Cheese Shop Mystery Series but can be read as a stand alone. There are recipes at the end of the story. Great blend of adventure, twists and turns and a touch of romance make for a delicious read. Thanks to the author via Facebook’s Cozy Mystery Review for the book. My opinion is my own.
This book, the fifth in the cheese shop mysteries by Avery Aames, is filled with great characters, plot twists and amazing food. In addition to the murder there is a mysterious stranger in a cloak. Charlotte, her cousin Matthew, Rebecca and Meredith all try and figure out what happened to Charlotte's houseguest. A classic whodunit with some great comedy thrown in with a cast of secondary characters! I just re-read this and I can't wait to try one of the recipes.
This was a fun murder mystery that wasn't too heavy but had all the characters and suspects along with a bit of suspense. But what I loved was the Cheese Theme. No matter what was happening someone was eating cheese.
Loved the descriptions of the cheeses, the flavours and the combinations used and the recipes at the end of the book.
As you can see I love both books/reading and food/cheese. So this was my kind of book. Fun, food, great characters, suspense and murder. I look forward to reading more books by Avery Aames.
How did I miss putting this in my read box. I loved these cheese shop mysteries and hope so much that they would write more of them. I would put them ahead of what ever else is in my too be read pile which is huge.
Title: Days of Wine and Roquefort Author: Avery Aames Series: Book 5, A Cheese Shop Mystery Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime Format: Ebook Source: Received for Review from Publisher Reviewed by: Tina
It's not easy being cheesy, as cheese shop owner, Charlotte Bessette is finding out. With her cousin, Matthew and his family moved out of the house and Charlotte's boyfriend, on a secret outing, Charlotte thought she could rest easy but missing her boyfriend, he never strayed far from her mind. Then cousin Matthew asks Charlotte if his long time friend and renowned sommelier, Noelle Adams could stay with her for the time being so Noelle can start her new job with Shelton Winery, being the gracious host she is Charlotte agrees and soon befriends Noelle.
Noelle soon finds that her aggressive, alcoholic ex boyfriend has followed her and so has shady reporter Ashley Yeats, hoping for a exclusive story about the sommelier and her life and her tortured past, Charlotte then finds Noelle bludgeoned with a wine bottle screw in her workshop but before she dies Noelle utters the words "Hell's Key" to Charlotte, but can Charlotte make it her mission to find out what those words meant? Could it also be the key to who murdered her and why? There are more suspects that surface like the daughter of the owner of the winery, Liberty and the winery manager, Harold but with The police chief Urso, urging Charlotte to stay out of the investigation,Charlotte wants to avenge Noelle's death and find justice for her and Matthew's friend.
This is the first of the cheese shop mysteries I have read and I have to say I really enjoyed the fact that besides owning and running a cheese shop that Charlotte ate cheese with every meal, Only in a book could you live on a cheese diet, Don't we wish we could all have in real life, I sure do. That's what I loved about it. As I will say once again, I am a big fan of culinary cozy mysteries, this one was great and it had my mouth watering for all the different cheeses depicted at the cheese shop. I want to now go back and read the series from the beginning so I can swoon over all the wonderful cheeses and I'm sure the excellent mysteries as this one was. What could go better with a little wine than a wonderful cheese?
What a treat to be able to read an advanced copy of this book. It's the 5th book in The Cheese Shop Mysteries written by Avery Aames. Once again Charlotte finds herself in the midst of another murder investigation along with her friend and shop clerk, Rebecca, even cousin Michael steps in on this one and ends up getting more than he bargained for. Police Chief Urso, once again asks Charlotte and her friends to let him do the investigation, but once again no one cares to listen to him. Because the murder took place in Charlotte's work shop, she feels as if she needs to get involved. Charlotte invites Noelle, a friend of Michael's,to stay with her for a while until Noelle can get settled into her new job at Shelton Winery, and find a place of her own. Noelle is followed by her possessive ex boyfriend, Boyd, and Ashley a reporter who believes that Noelle and her job, neither of them believe that Noelle is in the right place and the right job. Either man might be a danger to Noelle, Boyd, because of his drinking and Ashley, because he feels it is his right to reveal Noelle and her past. Avery writes books that grab the reader on the 1st page and holds them spell bound until the end, I can often read one of her books in one day. I had no idea who was the murderer, which is unusual as I can usually figure it out. Her books are quick reads and will appeal to just about all cozy lovers. Avery also writes as Daryl Wood Gerber and writes a fairly new series called the Cook Book Nook series, which I'm sure readers will enjoy. Avery/Daryl are on Facebook and you will find news and give-a-ways there. Take a stroll over there, take a look at their pages, you won't regret it.
I admit that I have never tried wine and I have not tried many cheeses. It does make me want to try more cheeses. I like that the recipes are in back of the book. They don't interfere with the story. Also they are easy to find if you want one. So the wine and cheese part of the story is hard for me to judge.
The mystery was good. I was not sure who the murder was but did figure out a few of the surprises before they were revealed.
This is book 5 of the series but only the first one I have read. The characters are well developed. I did not feel to lost in them but would love to have read the other books in the series.
I liked Noelle. Sorry for her being the murder victim.
The characters were a fun bunch. Especially Charlotte's family and friends. They bring a lot of drama, silliness and life to the story. You want to know more about their lives.
Charlotte runs a cheese shop with her cousin Mathew runs the wine part of it. Charlotte was raised by her grandparents who are French. Her boyfriend is a way testifying in witness protection. She is very handy with tools. She has to find out who killed Noelle at her home
Their is lots of humor, drama, action , some romance and lots of cheese and wine where they go. They are clean reads. A cozy mystery to enjoy.
The setting is small-town Providence, Ohio
I would read more books by Avery Aames or Daryl Wood Gerber in the future. They are entertaining.
I was given this ebook to read and asked in return to give honest review of by author and Netgalley.
Wow, what can I say! This book, Days of Wine and Roquefort had me intrigued from chapter one. I have always loved A Cheese Shop Mystery series. If you love food, wine, and the art of entertaining you will one get hungry while reading and two not be able to put it down. My thirst was not quenched till the last page. One of the many things I love about Avery Aames is her characters. You are able to pick up any in the series and feel like you have not been left behind. She explains everything for those who need a little catching up. Not only will you find great mystery and wine but you will find twists and turns at every corner. Things are beginning to finally slow down for Charlotte since Matthew, her cousin has married. Matthew asks Charlotte for a favor. He asks for her to let a friend of his who is going to be the new manager at the local winery to stay with her for a while. Of course Charlotte agrees. But Charlotte has a sense that Noelle is hiding something. Not until she finds Noelle dead in the garage with a cork screw in her neck does she go on high alert! What in the world could she have been up to and why kill her??? Charlotte begins to try and weed out all of the potential suspects. She has to walk a thin line since the owner of the winery and his daughter are high on the list of suspects. Will Charlotte be able to find the killer before she becomes his or her next target? I recommend this book to all those cozy and foodies out there looking for a great read. I warn you though, don't read hungry. I was given this book to read and review for an honest opinion.

RECIPES INCLUDED ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ My review – 4 stars This is the fifth in the series, but the first I have read. I had no problem following the characters, having not read the previous books in the series.
I found the characters delightful, and if you are a foodie, then this is a book for you! Wine and cheese are mentioned throughout, and may entice you to try some.
I was disappointed however in how easily I guessed whodunit and the motive, but I would read others in the series.
I received this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Another thrilling visit to Providence and the Cheese Shop! We find Charlotte undergoing many changes since her cousin has married and moved with his daughters into his wife's house, Jordan is off testifying against a crime organization and of course, the dead body that she has found! A dire warning to watch out for a wolf in sheep's clothing has her suspecting everyone! This series is a delightful read and I love getting to know the characters better in each installment! The author does a good job of layering the characteristics and personalities of each character so you feel as if you've known them forever. I especially like how she even develops the quirks of the supporting characters so none of them feel flat or forced into the story line. If you are looking for a great cozy mystery to read, then this series is for you. What better way to deal with murder and mayhem than with humor and lots and lots and lots of cheese!!!
This was a great addition to a really great series. I love visiting the town of Providence and all of it's quirky inhabitants. Charlotte is a great protagonist and she usually ends up getting herself into some sticky situations. This book kept me guessing till the very end. Charlotte wasn't sure who the killer was till the very end either. This book grabbed my attention and kept me enthralled the whole way through. My mouth watered most of the time from the descriptions of the luscious cheeses that Charlotte sells. There were also so laugh-out-loud moments in this book between two of the town's shop keepers. I really look forward to more in this series. If you are looking for a fast paced, exciting story that will keep you guessing and turning the pages, then this is the book for you.
I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review.
I do like cheese and I'm fond of wine on occasion. I will never try all the cheese mentioned in these books or sip the wines, but it is fun to read about them. Charlotte Bessette is the owner of the Cheese shop. Things are quiet. Her grandparents are busy with the Thanksgiving program they are producing staring the children in town. Charlotte's cousin Matthew and his daughters have moved out of Charlotte's house after he married Charlotte's best friend, Meredith. Charlotte's love is in the witness protection program and away at a trial that hopefully, when it ends, will set him free. Matthew asks Charlotte to host a friend of his, Noelle Adams a sommelier, who is looking at a job at a local winery. Charlotte likes Noelle and they are fast becoming friends, when Charlotte finds Noelle's body in her garage. So, who did it? You'll have to read the book to find out.
I received this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I am in love with cozy mysteries and this book fits right in! Charlotte has an awesome family and set of friends. It's sad when someone dies that you enjoy having in the story (even if it's for a short time). I guess it helped make them want to solve the murder even more. This was a fun story that keeps you wanting more. I did end up having to go to Wegmans and browse their cheese sections because it made me want some! (I ended up buying a Wisconsin Longhorn Cheddar.) I think my only issue with this book was that there were tons of details about some stuff and I got overwhelmed. Some people like all that info but I just ended up skipping it.
Now to go back and read the ones I missed in between :-)
In this most recent Cheese Shop Mystery, Charlotte's fianacé, Jordan, has gone off to the trial that will help end his involvement in the WITSEC program, leaving Charlotte and her other cast of characters from Providence, Ohio, to solve the mystery of who killed her house guest, Noelle, and why. More and more of Charlotte's friends and family are becoming involved in snooping (as Police Chief Urso calls it) and with as many as five suspects she needs all the help she can get. I really enjoy this series but this one came together a little roughly for me. There was too much conclusion jumping and a couple of the characters just were't authentic from the start. I will say that, if you're a fan of this series, the rivalry between Prudence and Sylvie is great comic relief.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I have never heard so many hands slapping - on desks, on tables and on walls. And what does "huffing" mean. There were a lot of huffs in this. Also, wild tempers. The boyfriend who bursts into shops and restaurants ready to launch himself at whoever is currently annoying him the most. There was certainly a great deal of wine and cheese in this, types of both of which I've never heard. Perhaps if one were a connoisseur of either I mightn't have been bugged so much. If you were planning a wedding would cheese plates be high on your list of concerns? Oh, and running! Charlotte dashes around from place to place with things in her hands. It was plotted not too badly but the plating left much to be desired. Don't think I'll look for any more from this series.
I love this series. Avery Aames' Cheese Shop Mysteries are so much fun. The town is definitely one that I want to add to my tour of fictional places. Charlotte is a delightful cheese shop owner who happens to find dead bodies on a regular basis. While her HAWT fiance is out of town she happens upon yet another body this one a person who was temporarily staying in her house. I definitely missed the sizzle between Charlotte and her fiance for most of the book but the mystery kept my attention. I will continue dropping in to find out what Charlotte and company are up to as long as Aames continues to write the series.
I really grow tired of the way the police chief treats the heroine in 99% of these books. Yes, I'm sure it's annoying to always have an amateur show you up and solve your crimes, but if she's always showing you up and solving your crimes, wouldn't it be a better idea to work WITH her? I also have a hard time believing some of these people could be real. I mean, do you know anyone who acts like Sylvie or Prudence? Seriously.
Overall, I still enjoyed this one reasonably well. I didn't love it, but it was fine.
I received a copy for an honest review. I have never read this series and it seems I came in the middle of it. The author did an excellent job of bringing readers up to date. I really like the main character Charlotte and I am madly in love her wacky grandparents. I really enjoyed the mystery aspect just as you were convinced it was one person it turns out it was someone else. Reading this book as definitely got me interested in reading the rest of the series and trying other books by this author.
At first I was a little unsure of the book because of all the wine and different cheeses that I could not pronounce and the French her grandparents used, but by the time I got to page 28 I really liked Charlotte, Matthew and the whole cast of characters. Silvey and Prudence were hysterical, I could just see them fighting and arguing, its always difficult to come in the middle of the series, I am happy to say I will be buying the first book and catching up with everyone in town.
Cheese shop owner Charlotte life is quiet with her fiancé out of town and her cousin and children out of her house. Then she is asks to be the host to Noelle a sommelier visiting to help a local winery. Something is troubling Noelle and then she is found dead. Charlotte has trouble picking who did it from Noelle's ex, the cagey owners and manager of the winery. It leads to danger before the murderer is caught. The story seemed to drag.
A nice, light, mystery read. I like the main characters, though I could live without the breathless Jordan drama. And the secondary characters are so over the top (Prudence, really?). It's one of those books I like to read for a little escape, and then I barely remember it afterward. But...sometimes that's what I'm in the mood for.
This is one of my favorite series. Unfortunately it is ending with the book coming out in February. I've already preordered it. The books are full of cheese and wine knowledge. In between there are mysteries and very like able and different characters. I would definitely recommend buying all the books in this series.
Not the best in the series, but still better than many series. I could not quite get in to it, but I think it's because I'm going through cozy overload.
Charlotte is trying to put a good face on for her family and friends, but she misses Jordan, who is off testifying against the perpetrator of a murder he witnessed. In the hope of providing a little companionship, Matthew encourages his friend and former protégée, Noelle, to stay at Charlotte’s house while she’s waiting for her apartment to be ready. Having just take a job at the large winery outside of town, she’s looking forward to settling in to Providence; Charlotte already feels an affinity toward her, since both were orphaned young and like to do woodwork, not to mention the wine and cheese connection. So it’s a shock when Charlotte returns from a night out with friends to find Noelle dying in her garage, a corkscrew jammed into her neck. She manages to get a couple of disjointed words out before she succumbs, which plague Charlotte as she tries to make sense of the murder and pin down the killer. The suspects seem rampant: the ex-boyfriend, prone to violence when drunk; the manager of the winery, who seems shady; a reporter with a supposed British accent, who doesn’t seem to know much about England; and the winery owner and his daughter, who were overheard arguing about something the afternoon before Noelle was murdered. With Jordan out of town, Charlotte turns to cousin Matthew and her friend Rebecca to “theorize” about the possibilities, testing impressions and meanings behind Noelle’s elusive last words. The revelation will uncover more than one person presenting a false front.
