‘Balancing Entropy’ is the debut novel by M.H. Cali with illustrations by Laurie Ya.  With this book they were able to bring to life a story that has two people who met on a vacation have a deep connection but share no information.  So, when they say good-bye that is it. There is no way to contact each other.

The way M.H. Cali wrote ‘Balancing Entropy’, you will learn about each character, how they are connected and their history throughout the book.  With something like this it shows how just like in our lives how everything and everyone is connected somehow.  By tying this in with the Romance and the Mystery M.H. was able to make me want more and making it so I stayed up later than I should be to get to the end of the story.

What really makes ‘Balancing Entropy’ different from other books is the fact that M.H. Cali teamed up with artist, Laurie Ya, to have drawings made for throughout the book.  Having this done was a genuinely nice touch and one you really don’t see.  Having this really helped me picture what was going on or had just happened.  It was also great to see the amazing work that Laurie Ya does as an artist, and it was nice to see two creative people come together with their passions to make one amazing book.

‘Balancing Entropy’ is book one in The Entropy Series that M.H. Cali is putting together.  I really can’t wait to get my hands on the second book. The sizzle in this book is only a 2 but that is okay with the mystery and character building that happens you won’t miss that it doesn’t have more sizzle.  The characters do have great chemistry that also helps keep the story interesting.  The book overall is getting 4 stars from me.  This is one book you need to read or have on that TBR list as you will be loving every moment of the read.

This book was released on August 21, 2023, and is available wherever you get your books, or you can go here to pick it up.  I promise you will not be disappointed by the story M.H. Cali and Laurie Ya tell.

**I did receive an ARC copy of this book from M.H. Cali.  Getting the ARC copy had no influence on my thoughts as they are my own.**

This is my first and honest review of The Entropy Series by M.H. Cali.

You start the series off in Greece, which I think really set the tone for the entire book. The characters you meet are young, driven, and a little conceited in my opinion, which makes sense given their occupations.
Raven is an aspiring lawyer in her 20s at the time of her vacation in Greece. She meets a young investment banker named Lucas, who's firing his own launch in his career.
Both characters right of the bat being young and driven, swear of any distractions that could deter their career plans. They both agreed a week in Greece, no strings attached not even last names or phone numbers were exchanged.

A whole decade later, both Raven and Lucas have achieved their career goals. They arent ultimately happy in that particular time. Lucas just had a break in at his office and receiving threats from an unknown source. Raven became burnt out by representing the wrong kind of people, it ultimately ate at her conscience and she turned in her resignation during one of the largest court cases in her career, were talking the news people!

Anyways, Lucas needs help finding out who's sending the threats so he hired a team to help him figure it out on the low.

Raven and her friend/business partner Jun walk into Lucas's office unknowingly, within seconds of them seeing each other again in the flesh, sparks fly!

The physical art is a beautiful addition! I really like having characters in my mind while reading.

You'll have to find out the rest for yourself, I can't go any farther without giving away spoilers and details.

The only flaw which isn't exactly a flaw, more so a personal preference.
The writing style is so different than what I'm used to, and a ton of details and character building than I'm used to.

Some of the conversations felt drawn out for me, that I tended to speed read over some of it while still enjoying the main characters.

I'm glad to see Breaking Patterns is shorter, I always feel like less is more when it comes to writing and most art forms. But that is a personal opinion.
I give this book (#1) 3.5 stars but would say 🌟🌟🌟🌟 for romance lovers!

**Full disclaimer - I have an ARC of this novel that my review is based on, and these are my honest thoughts. I also won't give specifics below as to avoid spoilers.**

The long and short of it is, I loved this book! This story has depth and layers that will keep you guessing and wondering what's coming next. I'm a romantic at heart and became invested in the lead characters, Raven and Lucas right from the start. Fortunately, the author doesn't take advantage of that by making things so sweet that I'd get a cavity. She builds her characters, in a way that you feel that you know them, that you want to grab a beer with them ~ I wanted to grab a beer with them. Yet she doesn't over work the story in the process. And it's clear that she's done her research on the professions of the characters, local sights and certain things that take place in the story.

This story is something the author should be very proud of ~ even more so as a debut novel. The pairing with an incredibly talented artist to capture certain scenes just adds to the emotions she's trying to convey. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series!

What a time I had reading this book. "Balancing Entropy" is a dream come true for every reader who enjoys a well-done thought process. In this story, the actions taking place are not what's most important, it's the mental process that the characters go through before and after every situation. And that's precisely what makes this book so unique and fascinating. Most of the time we don't watch the scenes unfold, we see the characters remembering what they did. Flashbacks were such an important and fitting tool: when we reflect on something, we don't do it in a straight line, we recall many things from the past and wonder about the future while we go on with our present life. Those ruminations are what end up leading us to the decisions that we take, meaning, they are the most transcendental part of or lives. And that's precisely why focusing on those thoughts was a touch of brilliance from M.H. Cali.

The thought process of the characters wasn't only beautifully done because of the combination of past, present and future, but also because of the use of music. Everyone in the story is listening to music most of the time, and it's not just noise to fill the silence, it actually helps the characters to clear their minds and rearrange their thoughts.

In this novel we have two main characters, and they're intricately built, but the side characters have depth too. They don't exist just to help move the plot forward, they actually have concerns of their own and I, as a reader, couldn't help but root for them and want to know them even more. Caring greatly for every character is definitely one of the greatest achievements of this story.

I would have liked it if this book had another round of edits (nothing big). Also, for my personal taste, I would reduce the amount of adjectives used, because mainly in the beginning there were too many (e.g., "mint green oversized cropped crew sweater"). I needed to stop and process every word before I could continue. Another thing that troubled me a little was how every character was upper class, especially taking into account that one of the main characters, Lucas, came from a very unprivileged background, so it's hard for me to believe that all his friends and family were lucky enough to become rich.

Regarding the illustrations, I really loved them, their style, the distinctiveness of the characters and the scenes chosen. I just would've liked it if those illustrations were bigger, at least in the electronic version that I read. And I would've preferred that each drawing wasn't signed, since they're not individual pieces and we know who the artist is.

Anyhow, the things that bothered me weren't big enough at all to prevent me from giving this book 5 stars. It's a perfectly compelling and enjoyable ride. I have to thank the authors for this ARC and for the beautiful art that I hope they never stop creating.

As far as soulmates go ..i believe that lucas and raven are the definition of that.. the two met 10 years ago in mykonos .. both fresh out of college and on their last holiday before pursuing their professional dreams .. they had a no strings attached releationship , didn’t share any information about each others except their names .. yet after 10 years they were still thinking about each other until … circumstances brought them back together 😍.. lucas, the investment banker , is being blackmailed and threatened so he hired a team to help him uncover the layers of this scheme .. and guess who just joined that team after quitting her job as a lawyer ! 🙈

The writing style is soo dreamy and different from anything i’ve read before .. It is written in 3rd person but in a way that makes it easy to Pinpoint whom pov you're reading and it was soo good 😍 the illustrations are stunning and i enjoyed seeing certain scenes beautifully curated by lustforart 🤩

This is not just a pursuance of a love story between Lucas and raven that blossomed years ago .. This book also concentrates on some other heavy topics that added to its glory .. like Being blinded by ambition and framing success just by money .. and The concequences of our actions and the constant conflict between our values , beliefs and the greed that comes with ambition .. everything was written in am impeccable way that made the book and the characters so relatable and real 🫠 the touch of suspense from Lucas’s blackmailer kept me on my toes and in desperate need to unravel the truths 🤩

After reading only dark romance for a while now.. This book felt like a cleansing.. Raven and Lucas did have their spicy moments.. And they were 🔥 the chemistry between them is sizzling 🔥 but all in all reading their journey was freeing.. There wasn't any misunderstandings between them.. They talked everything out and they did not let their minds run circles when they can simply ask and talk .. which was soo refreshing 🫠

Thank god i have the next book in this trilogy cause that cliffhanger and the excerpt from breaking patterns left me on edge 🤯

Such a refreshing romance story! Where it follows Raven, and Lucas, both lawyers who met in Mykonos 10 years ago and spent a romantic week together with no string attached and not to speak again
Such a perfect story full of love, friendship, mystery, lgbtq representation and hello some spice.

🔥🔥🔥SPOILERS!!!!🔥🔥🔥

Ever since then, neither have been able to maintain a relationship. Lucas’ office gets broken into and receives a written threat He now needs someone to help him deal with it on the downlow. Guess who’s going to help him! Raven!

You already know that chemistry is there!
But bitch it’s been 10 years,so they don’t exactly jump each others bones lol.
There’s so much fucking tension! At times I wanna slap both the MMC AND THE FMC.. like KISS already!!! Shit!!!!

So this is the first book I’ve read that an argument actually has an important role.
And that characters communicate.
I love the relationship that Raven has with Jun and her friends back in Cali Zoe and Haddy.

Anyways soo that tension I was talking about is that they’re both super interested in each other but obviously have their own life’s… Luca goes out with his friends every Thursday night and hooks up with women and Rvane has her Fuckbuddy Will

Soo one of his nights out, Lucas leaves and goes to Ravens apartment, where she has Will over because why not?Lucas was going to go fuck around, anyways Raven doesn’t even feel connected to Will anymore but ofc! Lucas knocks on the door, Raven opens it and sees William so he leaves.

What ends up happening is that Raven chooses to leave to California for a week to de-stress and invited Lucas who comes along.. so you already know what happens lol.
They flirt non stop and have some cute and sexy asss moments 🌶️🌶️

They basically get together, talk about everything tbh…. But here comes the real challenge when they come back…

Let’s not forget that someone broke into his apartment when they were in Cali….

3.5 Stars rounded to 4

I received this ARC from Hazels Book Tours to read and voluntarily review. I was intrigued by the premise but this one ended up falling just a bit flat for me.

This book has illustrations throughout -- a unique and exciting concept. It did, however, not work for me. I visualize when I read and found that the pictures disrupted the little movie that was playing in my head. It didn't allow me to use the writing to flesh out the characters and scenes around them; instead they told me what I should be picturing at certain points in the story. I love me some good character art but these illustrations were too frequent in the text for my liking. I have a degree in fine art so I can certainly appreciate the craft, so no shade to the artist; she did a lovely job and I'd love to see the illustrations as standalone character art prints.

Onto the story (the stuff that actually matters in a review)! I found the writing to be a bit heavy in its style and didn't love the third person POV. I felt like the author really wanted us to be emerged in the minds of our main characters, and first person POV unfortunately pulled me out of it too often. I also thought the descriptions of people, events, etc. were a bit in your face at times and could've used a bit of refinement.

That being said, these are very nit-picky points and I want to say that, just because the book isn't for me doesn't mean it's not a good book. It *is* a good book! It's deep, covers a range of real-world issues, and develops a very real relationship between two well-developed characters. This book has great reviews for a reason so don't let my points sway you unless you have a very specific reading style like I do. Even though it wasn't my jam I would still recommend it.

This is book one of the authors Entropy series, which the author has kindly sent me copies of.

The chemistry between the two main characters, Raven and Lucas, is intense and the tension Cali builds between the two of them through this novel is palpable. There is a lot of looking g back and referencing their hook up in their younger years, which just adds to the intrigue of will they/won't they. A slight negative here is that there is a lot of "fluff" and extra reminiscing added in that wasn't really needed and didn't really progress the story in any way. The novel could have been a lot shorter without it and not lacked anything for its loss.

Alongside the romance aspect of the plot is the mystery of who is blackmailing Lucas. I have an idea who it might be and why, but book one ended on a cliffhanger! If I didn't have reason enough before to read book two, finding out if I'm right is definitely motivation!
I really liked how not every encounter happened as you were reading, quite often it involved the characters looking back over events or interactions and assessing how that has led them to their current position in the story.

I struggled a little with the writing style and the fact that several words seemed to be repeatedly used in error, which kind of took me out of the story momentarily and disrupted its flow.

The illustrations by Laurie Ya that were spread throughout the book added to the story by showing key moments and allowing the reader to more accurately visualise our main characters.

I did enjoy this book despite the issues I had with the grammar and writing style, and can't wait to start book 2

“But love is blind they say.”

“Sometimes some people leave an indelible imprint on the mind. One that can’t be shaken off no matter how much time has passed.”

“Every human being deserves to be treated with nothing but respect and care throughout their lives.”

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and Hazel’s Book Tours in exchange for a read and review. All opinions are my own.

Balancing Entropy is M.H. Cali debut novel and also book one in The Entropy Series. This is one book you need to add to your TBR if you’re looking for the best banter. I could not get over the easy flow of the two MC banter back and forth. It made this book so much more than I anticipated.

While reading this book be prepared to get some in-depth information. The way she explain everything in such great detail makes you feel as if you are apart of the story itself. There isn’t much spice to this book. Their pass hook up is definitely referenced a lot. The chemistry between Lucas and Raven are what keeps this book going along with the mystery of who is threatening Lucas.

My cons for this book are I felt like there was a lot of information added to this book for more fluff, which made it way longer than it needed to be. I dunno. Also, it ends on a cliffhanger!!! I absolutely hate cliffhangers. All in all I believe you should try it out. I would love to know where others stand on this book.

M.H. Cali's "Balancing Entropy" is the first book of "The Entropy Series" that takes readers on a journey filled with love, romance, loss, and mystery.

The story revolves around the main characters, Lucas Blake and Raven Collins. Lucas is currently an investment banker in New York and Raven was a lawyer. Lucas and Raven had met in Mykonos a decade ago and had a great time with each other. Even after moving to New York, he couldn't stop thinking about her. Things take a turn when Lucas finds himself entangled in a crisis. He hires a crisis management team and reunites with Raven, who joins the team. Unexpected turns come as you flip the pages.

There are beautiful and relatable illustrations in the book, and I couldn't take my eyes off them. The twists and suspense kept me hooked. There were moments when I wondered, "what will happen next?". In short, this book has everything that will keep you engaged till the end.

The characters of Raven and Lucas are portrayed beautifully. I liked author M.H. Cali's excellent descriptions. The language used in the book is lucid, and I appreciate Laurie Ya for the beautiful cover art and illustrations.

"Balancing Entropy" will be a perfect choice for someone who loves reading romance books with some suspense. I am eagerly waiting to read the second book in this series.

Disclaimer: This book contains some sexual content and mentions of drug use and gambling addiction.

A good book and wonderful art in-between.

The story is moderately paced and the characters are multifaceted.

The writing style, IMO, makes the read a little arduous; the recollections of past interactions between characters are a little befuddling. The descriptions - of what the characters are wearing, the furnishings and the decor - come across a little too heavy, and breaks the flow of the narrative.

We love a self-sufficient, strong-willed, independant FMC whose moral compass just kicked blind ambition out the door. Raven Collins is brilliantly written and a pleasure to get to know over the course of the book.

Lucas Blake is definitely 'the man written by a woman'. He checks all the boxes for a too-good-to-be-true MMC.

The MCs' friends don't fade into the background after a few scenes or lose relevance after a plot point in the book. They have fantastically written arcs, especially Jun, who just might be my favorite character. They contribute amazingly to the story from start to finish.

The slow-burn romance is made use of for all its worth. The 🌶️🌶️🌶️ parts are great, as well. The book does a briliant job of introducing a slew of characters and sets relevant stages for them to interact and get to know each other, but by the end, I was left feeling like nothing tangible happened, plot-wise.

Overall, it's a good read.

Voluntarily reviewed after reading an ARC.

This is a great read and involves a second chance romance! I love second chances in a romance book, even years later! And I have to say this story was written by the author really well. It was an engaging read for the readers including myself!

I love the illustrations of the characters and places in this book! They are well drawn and also give the readers a chance to see who the author is writing about. And I loved that first chapter of when Lucas and Raven are away on holiday and meet they decide to not have any connections after their trip. That is a really great introduction and way to get your readers involved into the story.

I loved the chemistry between Lucas and Raven, and how Raven is called to come in and help with his threats regarding his lawyer cases. That was a good way to make them get back together. And the story is so intriguing for the readers and I really enjoyed the twists and turns that the story took.
I also think that the author did an amazing job describing Lucas and Raven in words and then the artist did a great job in drawing them out, the pictures matched my thoughts on how the two characters looked exactly!
The ending is great! I really liked what happened for both Lucas and Raven. I also want to find out what happens with everything that happened at the end, without giving any spoilers away😊

I recommend it to all the readers who like romance and a great story line!

First things first, the communication in Balancing Entropy is TOP NOTCH. It was the first thing I noticed about the book and I just loved the no drama between Lucas & Raven. After a quick fling in Mykonos 10 years prior, the two cross paths again. These two seem to pick up right where they left off with their banter and they are just so up front with their feelings & thoughts towards each-other. I just absolutely loved that about this book. It’s so hard to read a poor communication trope when you know what the characters are feeling and want to say yet don’t?? While I would say this is a slow burn, the drama free tension is there and the spice was so good. So much character development, an immersive read and it just all felt so real. The only drama that comes with this book is the suspense surrounding these threats toward Lucas, which is perfect. There’s many deep layers to uncover with these characters that by the end I felt I personally knew them. This is a perfect beach read to really immerse yourself in the Cali/surfing vibes this book gives. I also have to say Lucas Blake is literally the greenest green flag walking. One more thing is the illustrations by Laurie Ya are absolutely stunning on the cover and throughout the book.

Balancing entropy does end on a cliff hanger but luckily Breaking patterns comes out March 18th (super weird coincidence but MY Lucas’s birthday is March 18th). Can’t wait to dig in and find out the answers!

Balancing Entropy is a fantastic read that had me on the edge of my seat from the very first page. M.H. Cali is a master at weaving a web and increasing the stakes higher and higher throughout the story until a wild ending ensues. The tension between Raven and Lucas is palpable and each page left me wanting more. It is easy to tell that Cali is truly passionate about their characters and their story, as the characters are well-developed and three dimensional, while the world they live in is undeniably realistic. Cali's descriptions are incredibly detailed, allowing the reader to feel like they are there with the characters and experiencing things in real time. The relationships between characters are as layered as the development of the characters themselves, and Cali is careful not to give away too much at once. I also genuinely appreciate the research that is clearly put into making the world real, as streets and locations are accurate to the real world, which I appreciate as a reader. I was shocked by how quickly I was able to read through the story as well, simply because I just had to know what happened next. Balancing Entropy is a 10/10 knock out read, and I CANNOT wait for the next part. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

*I received an ARC copy from the author in exchange for an honest review*

The book follows the story of Lucas and Raven who met on vacation, but share no contact information with each other. Years later, they reconnect through certain circumstances that kickstart the story.

I personally love this kind of second chance romance, so I was very excited to give this book a try and I was not disappointed. Both main characters feel very genuine and I loved their attitudes and reactions to given situations. The way they slowly reconnect with each other was wonderful to read and the author does a great job providing glimpses of the past mingled with the present in a way that felt very genuine and not confusing.

The book contains art by Laurie Ya throughout every chapter and it's absolutely gorgeous! It pairs very well with the descriptions M.H. Cali provides, in a way that makes the reader feel closer to the characters and their world. I saw some character cards on their social media and I can honestly say the way I pictured these characters in my mind is very close to what the authors had in mind.

I think this is a solid debut novel and I cannot wait to read more from this author, especially where this series is going.

This book was more of a 4.5/5 ⭐ for me, as the ending left me wanting a lot more and some plot points had no resolution in this first book.

Balancing Entropy (The Entropy Series Book 1) is written by M.H. Cali and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The book comprises a total of 20 chapters and is based on mystery, romance, and suspense.

The story revolves around Lucas and Raven Collins, a successful investment banker and a lawyer respectively, who meet after ten years and rekindle their love for each other. The book is filled with beautiful art and each chapter is written exquisitely. Cali's writing style is engaging and draws readers into the intricate world of the book. The narrative is paced with suspense, twists, and mysteries to keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Cali manages to present complex concepts in an accessible manner, making them easy to understand even for readers with limited knowledge. Although some readers may find themselves re-reading certain paragraphs to fully grasp the intricacies of the story, the characters Lucas and Raven have been portrayed in a well-developed manner.

Overall, "Balancing Entropy" is a highly engaging read with a gripping plot. The language used is simple and lucid, the writing style is intriguing, and the book cover is beautiful.

I highly recommend "Balancing Entropy" to anyone looking for an interesting and captivating read. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. This book has touched my heart.

4.5⭐
It was completely different read and completely different story from what I expected, but it didn't disappoint me. I enjoyed my time reading the book. It's not like normal romance story and what make it different from other is the fact that the story has depth and the thought process behind character's action. I don't know if I'm able to convey why this book is different, but trust me when I say that I haven't read a story like this. The thing which makes it much more special is the Artwork by Laurie in the book, they are so good that they give boost to your imagination..I mean now you can exactly imagine the scene.

Balancing Entropy is cozy, steamy, mysterious and suspenseful story which also explores ambition, internal struggles, shades of human relationships. It also offers a thought provoking journey of self-discovery of characters. The book is a beautiful combination of past, present and future.

Cali's writing style is unique and amazing which I found myself loving. The way she describes her character, I mean the more you read the more you'll know the layers of them. The chemistry between Raven and Lucas is sizzling. I love their relationship and how they again fall for each other.

The only flaw I'll mention here is that the writing a lot more descriptive than I'm use to. But after sometimes I got familiar with it and then bang, the perfect read for me.

This book is a reminder, that whatever life throws at you, you always get up and built yourself anew regardless of societal expectations and peer pressure.

The connection and reconnecting between Lucas and Raven, their history, turmoil and challenges and second chance at love.

It was thrilling, suspenseful, gripping. Makes the reader wants to just keep flipping the pages in pursuit of the next rush, to want to kidnap both main characters , put them in a room and let them bang it out 😉 😅 the tension was sizzling and palpable.

I've just finished "Balancing Entropy" by M.H. Cali and I'm buzzing with excitement! This debut novel is an absolute gem, blending romance, mystery, and soul-searching in the most captivating way. From the moment Lucas and Raven cross paths, you're drawn into their world of intrigue, connection, and their history. 💫✨

What do I love most? The characters! They feel like old friends, each with their quirks and complexities. Lucas, the meticulous investment banker, and Raven, the enigmatic lawyer, have a chemistry that leaps off the page. And let's talk about the supporting cast – they're so vivid and relatable, I really loved the way Cali uses the characters and helps them build and enrich the story.

But here's the real kicker – the illustrations by Laurie Ya! They're like snapshots of the story coming to life, adding an extra layer of magic to an already mesmerizing tale.

Sure, "Balancing Entropy" might not be your typical high-sizzle romance, but who needs that when you have such rich character development and a plot that keeps you guessing at every turn? Plus, the thematic depth and emotional resonance? Chef's kiss!

This is a fantastic debut novel from Cali, it's beautifully told, captivating, and well paced. Can't wait to see what M.H. Cali has in store next!

A must read in my books!

This second chance romance had me hooked from chapter one. Cali does an amazing job of building characters and making them relatable so that you easily connect with them. I liked how deep we got into the mc lives, the way the author portrayed and showed different aspects of these characters lives made them feel so realistic and like I was friends with them and not just reading about them in a book.

Plot wise this felt fresh and different for me. The scenes that were written were so vivd and interesting that you find yourself quickly lost between the pages of this book. I didn't realise how fast I was devouring this one until I got to the last page and was sad it was over. I really enjoyed the gorgeous artwork and when authors take the time to include little things like this I find it helps enhance the reading experience and makes it easier for you as a reader to picture the characters the author is writing about. There's not only an amazing mystery that keeps you wanting to read on but the chemistry between the two mc is written so well that even though I class this more as more of a slow burn I was locked in to what was going to happen between this unlikely pair.
