So horror is not typically my jam, but I'm great friends with the author and have heard a lot of good things about the book. I was gifted a copy for Christmas and was extremely excited to get started as soon as it hit my hands. And I'm happy to report, I give this book a 10000 out of 10. Excellent story, great pacing. Very Astrid-friendly (I'm adverse to most types of horror due to how much gore goes on, and this is cozy so no gore required). It's a very quick read once you sit down with it. I was at the edge of my seat pretty early on.
The characters are well-developed and very likable. Max and Shay are definitely my favorites, and they are a delight. Jo is adorable too. Duncan is a lovable dork. Gideon and Duncan are adorable together. Honestly, Shay is pretty relatable for me.
This was a fun story about two teenaged best friends who got caught up in the paranormal world, which, as it turned out, was very much real. The banter between the protagonists, Shay and Max, was hilarious and well-placed, making the story lighthearted and Ghostbusters-esque despite some spooky scenes (which were entertaining too).
Shay discovered she could not only see ghosts, but touch them as if they were solid. But they could do the same to her, and not all of them were friendly...
I chose to read this book for #nonbinarynovember (Max is non-binary) and loved it. My favourite character was Shay's brother, Duncan "Donuts". It was refreshing to read about a supportive, fun-loving older brother and family and friends who would protect each other no matter what it took. I'd like to read the sequel and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys paranormal / sci-fi genres and/or Ghostbusters.
If you're looking for a read that's spooky but also fun and occasionally funny? Go get this book and punch the nearest ghost. If there aren't any around to punch... send the main character Shay a thank you because clearly, she's been working hard.
I love the take on ghosts, and how they work. I love the ghost hunters and the mediums and the sibling energy... it's all fun. I've already gotten the second book and I am looking forward to reading it!
