Junk Junction: a mid-grade non-binary adventure

Rate this book
Edi has collected antiques and ghost stories for as long as they can remember. Some old objects buzz with history, and when Edi touches them, they see fragments of the item's story. But are the visions real? Edi desperately wants to believe in the supernatural until a mysterious ghost transforms their mom into a mannequin. Helped by Delilah, a thirteen-year-old psychic, Edi researches local hauntings to untangle how and why their mom became a mannequin. When Edi finally employs their ability to see an artifact’s history, they learn the terrifying truth. The ghost that turned Edi’s mom into a mannequin wants to resurrect herself, and she doesn’t care how many people she murders in the process. If Edi doesn’t put her spirit to rest by the end of the summer solstice, dozens of people will be forever mannequinized, including Edi and Delilah’s moms. Sara Codair is on a hiatus from writing at the moment. They are putting their energy into things like triathlons and their day job. One day they may return to writing. Goose the Meowditor certainly misses deleting their stories.

Ghost stories, magic and the paranormal are my special genre, and you, dear reader, are the perfect friend to explore them with. And if “Junk Junction” by Sara Codair is any indication then we’re all in for more fantastic adventures and ghost stories involving the main characters: Edi and Delilah.

This is a wonderful coming of age YA novel suitable for young adults on up to at least a century or two. It’s clean, it’s paranormal with numerous ghosts, and it’s a story about a young girl discovering her psychic/magic power and its potential. The amateur sleuthing aspect of "Junk Junction" reminds me a lot of the Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys mysteries I read when I was younger.

Edi, and her soon-to-be best friend, Delilah are up against an old and powerful ghost who has turned their mothers and a family friend into mannequins! The ghost is killing people and taking their life energy in order to be resurrected with grand designs of re-creating the world. While her intent has merit, her methodology for achieving it is what Edi and Delilah, and their two ghost friends, Bennedict and Alex, must put a stop to.

Eventually Edi and the old ghost come to a head on battle… which I won’t relate as that’s one of the juiciest parts of the story!

Later on, no one seems able to relate the same story about what happened that fateful weekend.

“Maybe that’s how it is with all ghost stories. Imagination fills in the gaps, and the tale evolves as it’s told over and over again. The only way to get the real story is from the ghost itself.” From “Junk Junction” by author, Sara Codair.

Good Mojo.
Confusing at first with the binary and its true role in a preteen ghost story and mystery. The story with the journal intros made the story a great adventure for a 12 and 13 year old. I like the mystery of Edi’s special uniqueness and psychic sensitivity- that was pretty cool. However I found it redundant and pointless that Mx Rivers was binary and this is how Edi’s relates gender wise as relevant to the story. I thought who cares? Get on with the story! I just didn’t see the need to even include this gender related part. To me, it only made it hard to read. But the kids trying to save their moms and using energy and battling a crazed power hungry spirit was very entertaining to read. The fact that Edi seems autistic seems more relatable. All in all good story but I felt personally some of the story could have been removed. And I can see this becoming a series of Edi and Delilah adventures.

Can People Become Mannequins?

Similar to the Trudeau's wax museums, some mannequins look almost lifelike. They're man-made, but suppose, just suppose, that they were once human and magically changed into their new forms. That would explain some things. Ever get the sense that a realistic mannequin may have been looking at you? How about a very old painting on a wall? Did its eyes move? We've all heard stories about haunted places (houses, hotels, cemeteries, prisons, insane asylums), how many are based (at least partly) on reality? "Junk Junction" is a story which is partially horror, partially love, and partially coming-of-age; all entwined in a magical web.

A fun, YA adventure with creepy mannequins, ghosts, dolls, and other antiques. There's a deeper mystery uncovered through the story, and we gradually dig deeper into the characters and what made them the way they are. For all the scary elements, this is a great story for young teens.
