Stockholm Syndrome

Rate this book
We don’t get to choose who we fall in love with—and sometimes we fall too far…

Daniel Eames is a bodyguard. Usually assigned to protecting politicians, he has fallen out of his boss’s good books after getting too close to his last charge’s son but when rising Hollywood star and Academy Award nominee Bryan McTiernan receives peculiar letters and requires the best possible protection, Dan is put on the job.

While he agrees that the letters are more than harmless fan mail, he finds it impossible to narrow down his suspicions and Bryan isn’t helping by alternately seducing and irritating the hell out of him. Against his better judgement, Dan falls for Bryan’s manipulations, but the more he gets to glimpse behind the façade of the young actor, the more he realises that something in Bryan’s past has a strong hold over him. While both Dan and Bryan are aware of this, neither sees the full extent of his fixation.

With the help of Gabe, a fellow bodyguard and friend, Dan pursues different theories and even hires a private investigator to learn about Bryan’s well-hidden past. What he discovers has the potential to destroy more than just a promising career and in the end, Bryan has to make a choice—allow for his past fixation to take him hostage again or run away and into Dan’s open arms?

Sage Marlowe

Sage has been passionate about books from a very early age on and dreamt of writing one for years while working on the day job instead. It took a very persistent character in the company of a treasured Muse to finally get the first novel going. The fact that he was gay came as a bit of a surprise, but it explained a lot.

Ever since, Sage has been the willing slave to all the fascinating guys who just keep queuing up and want their stories told. This has resulted in several manuscripts at various stages of completion, so there's always something to work on - preferably at night when the rest of the house is asleep.

Sage's characters often have a dramatic and sometimes traumatic past and need to battle some demons to be with the one they love. It doesn't hurt that they usually get quite a lot of naughty action along the way!

Sage loves to hear from readers, so go ahead please...

We don't get to choose who we fall in love with, but we do get to choose what we read - I wish I had made a better choice.

If you would like to read about two characters who are brimming with psychological issues and lack a single iota of common sense between them - this is the book for you.

Stockholm Syndrome isn't particularly poorly written; it has commas in the right places and doesn't mix up accept and except, but it still isn't a very good read.

Bryan McTiernan is a young, gorgeous, talented actor who has been nominated for an Oscar and is receiving 'curious' letters that his agent believes are threatening. - I don't think it's a spoiler to say that the letters which say "Remember Me", "Together Forever" and "Always Mine" were written by someone with whom Bryan shares a 'past' - the book is called 'Stockholm Syndrome'. Look up the definition and then I'll give you one guess as to who is writing the letters.

Enter Daniel Eames, the bodyguard who has sex with his charges. He is assigned to protect Bryan as punishment for "cocking-up" his last assignment. (It's never overtly stated, but Daniel's partner keeps referencing how similar Bryan looks to 'someone' Daniel was previously involved with - the implication being that Daniel screwed his last assignment and that guy looked just like Bryan - and you thought the guy with the Stockholm Syndrome was supposed to be the crazy one...) Daniel can't keep his eyes (or paws) off of Bryan, even though he knows it's a mistake.

Daniel and Bryan start getting it on and that's where the book just runs off the rails. The sex is fine, it's the emotions that make no sense at all. I never understood why Bryan was sleeping with Daniel to begin with when he was so obviously waiting for someone else, and I was totally creeped out by the (never addressed) issue of Bryan looking like someone Daniel was obsessed with.

I think I'd be less upset if this book didn't have a good premise. You can see a strong backbone running through this that gets shortchanged by trying to get the MCs to hop in bed at first sight. I'm disappointed :(

Wow, it’s the first time that I read a book by Sage and don’t quite like it. I’m a bit stunned by this fact and don’t know how to deal with it, however it remains a fact that this book didn’t have that magic hold that Sage’s previous works have had on me so far.

In this book we meet Dan and Bryan. Dan a bodyguard and Bryan an actor, and the story is pretty obvious that they’ll fall for each other. Nice premises and I couldn’t wait to read it. It gets better as the plot is somewhat a mystery that you don’t get to really see until you’re far into the plot. Dan is trying to find Bryan’s stalker however Bryan isn’t helping. As a matter of fact during the entire read Bryan is resisting and trying to hide his any involvement or knowledge about his stalker. I kept wondering why and it wasn’t till the near end that this is revealed.

This part of the mystery I loved, I liked and enjoyed a lot. So you’ll very well wonder why on earth I didn’t like the book. It’s just that the characters held no power over me. Bryan was sketchy and completely unapproachable for me the whole way. I read about him and it felt as if I was reading about a liar and that had no appeal to me whatsoever. Even when the truth was revealed and the veil of mystery gone I still couldn’t bring myself to care. It was a bit too late for the vulnerability of his character to evoke feelings from me. I mean, I did pity him, but that’s that.

And as for Dan, oh my God what a character, what an utter idiot. He was supposed to be a bodyguard and very good at his job right? But he’d fallen from his bosses good graces because he screwed up his former assignment. And ok, I can understand screwing up once, it’s human. But then, this story starts with his boss giving Dan a second chance and guess what, goes on and does the exact same thing that should have cost him his job in first place. Ugh… Moving on, everything his did was against his job, so much so that I was thinking, this guy doesn’t have the slightest idea what a bodyguard position requires, I wondered if he could even carry a gun for crying out loud. He made one mistake after another and when the shit hit the fan, ok guess… Yep he didn’t move a muscle, nothing, zero, zip. Stood there watching the scene as if he was at the damn movies. Ah, so frustrating. Then, there was the fact that Bryan’s character was so damn fishy, that I wondered all the time why on earth he fell in love with him in first place. It just didn’t make sense. Their love scenes yes were as hot and steamy as I’ve come to expect from Marlowe to write, but it was just that that I saw and felt. Lust I get it, but I totally missed the love part there, saw no connection whatsoever and during the entire read felt detached and waiting for something to happen to make get into it more.

Anyway, I simply didn’t get into this one and feel this book needed a bit more work into it, so I’m crossing my fingers and waiting for Sage’s next one.

Daniel Eames is appointed to protect a slightly brattish, young movie star who has been receiving letters from a mysterious stalker. His agent has arranged the protection to look after her most valuable asset, but it seems neither of them are happy with the arrangement.

Daniel wants to be professional, do his job to the best of his ability, but what he didn’t count on was his charges magnetic personality which pulls him close, too close for comfort ad to keep the assignment on an entirely professional footing.

Bryan is young, attractive and extremely devious. He knows the effect his charms have on people and uses them to get what he wants. There are times when he doesn’t always get it his own way and he really doesn’t like it. He can be childlike in his reactions at times, storming off and throwing strops of almost epic proportions, but how much of this is his real personality, and how much is his merely playing his role as one of Hollywood’s hottest rising stars to perfection.

Bryan has secrets, a lot of them. For a man very much in the public eye, so much is kept hidden away. You do get glimpses and teases of what these might be throughout the book, but never quite enough to work out the underlying mystery, or what he is trying so hard to hide from everyone. I actually stopped trying to work it out, and just settled back and enjoyed the ride. I’m glad I just went with it as there is no way I could’ve or would’ve ever guessed what would be revealed in the end, IF I had, it would’ve spoiled the surprise at the end of the book.

These two characters are well rounded and totally perfect together. They fit together well and although it’s not a smooth or easy relationship they have, but if it had been it wouldn’t have worked as well as it did for me. The interaction between them was believable, also very hot and steamy at times, it was, as always with Sage’s writing, perfectly balanced.
I was totally drawn into this story from the first page, and was captivated until the last, and was definitely left wanting more, which is nothing new!

Sage’s writing is captivating and pulls me inside the book with the characters and I can honestly say, he is now one of my favourite authors, and this book, one of the best he has written in my opinion.

Your mileage may vary, but if you are a regular M/M reader, you have certainly read at least a dozen of these bodyguard – client/agent – witness scenarios. Still, I was excited to read this story, because it is marketed as thriller/suspense and because I’ve never read a story by Sage Marlowe. But, in spite of author’s attempt to lift the story above the average, the elements that could have done that remain largely in the domain of retelling or off-page. The easy-to-read writing style just isn’t enough to sufficiently pull the reader (at least this one) into the story.

As the blurb tells you, Daniel Eames is a bodyguard already in the doghouse with his boss for getting involved with his previous charge’s son. Guess what? He does it again. Immediately. It’s hard to sympathize with a man who apparently has no self control whatsoever. He falls for Bryan’s manipulations every time and has a stockpile of rationalizations to justify his behavior. Also, it’s hard to understand what he sees in Bryan beyond the man’s good looks, because he fails to look beneath the surface.

Bryan McTiernan, a young Hollywood star and the object of Daniel’s lust, was an element of this story that offered many possibilities. It’s obvious from the beginning that Bryan wasn’t entirely honest about the messages he received, but the reader cannot really get an inkling what he is hiding, because Daniel does nothing (on page) to uncover this secret, except occasionally telling Bryan that he knows about it. Putting aside the improbability of a rising Hollywood star no one knows anything about, considering the lengths some media are prepared to go for a piece of news/gossip (News of the World, anyone?), this was a lost opportunity on the author’s part. Having Daniel investigate Bryan’s past would have done wonders for character dynamics. Instead, someone else does it – off page. Similar things happen with the key event that defined Bryan as a person.

Except from the title and his penchant for manipulating Dan, very little is given to the reader in terms of clues which would connect Bryan to the sender of the letters. In fact, there is no way of knowing who he is until he appears. And when the man does appear, he offers no insight into the young, impressionable mind he seduced. We do not know who the man really is or was in the past. In fact, he comes across as a mustache-twirling villain and it takes only a few sentences from Daniel for Bryan to drop him like a hot potato. Even Bryan’s psychological breakdown happens off page. Instead of taking opportunities to engage the characters and deepen their personalities, the author shows us only their sexual relationship. Frankly, a very limited number of secondary characters (including Dan’s colleague Gabe, Bryan’s agent and a couple of other minor characters) hardly allowed for anything else.

Aside from a decent writing style, I give the author credit for trying to show that Dan’s actions had consequences – his bad decisions cost him his job. Yet, by that time I really didn’t care. It’s a shame really, because I think the author had a concept that could have given us an exciting story. As I said in the beginning, your mileage may vary and thus you may enjoy the story more than I did. I’ll be certainly giving this author another chance, but Stockholm Syndrome just didn’t work for me.

synopsis:
dan agrees to act as bodyguard to bryan, a man who is nominated for an acadamy award, and who is receiving notes that could be perceived as threats. he tries to find out who is doing it, even though bryan doesn't really cooperate. when dan realizes that there is more to bryan's story than he knew, he is taken from the case for being unprofessional. it turns out that bryan wants the man who is sending the notes, and will do anything for him, even if it means ignoring the developing attraction and feelings between himself and dan.

what i liked: the premise. i liked dan and bryan.

what i didn't like: the writing. i don't know; i just never felt the big connection between dan and bryan, and i didn't really understand dan's previous story. even though it was alluded to, nothing was really said about it.

Had the bones of a great story but there was so much time put into getting these characters fucking that characterisation suffered. Dan swung wildly between merely competent and utterly useless, Bryan was unlikable and douchey pretty much the whole way through, and the only character that was interesting was Gabe.

The mystery was actually pretty intriguing but poorly paced, particularly towards the end where it just felt as though the author was trying to get all the ends tied up in as few words as possible. The romance, though, felt forced and didn't ring true.

Another book filled with complex, characters who don't do what you'd expect. Fantastic. I was uncertain the entire way how this was going to play out, the author and his characters kept me guessing. I was ready to throttle Bryan and wanted to have a frank discussion with Dan - giving him lots of cuddles. Highly recommended.

I really liked the book, which is no news as I am a big fan of Sage Marlowe, but the only problem I have with this story is how easily Dan forgave Brian. As rude as he was, Brian should have crawled some more but no he didn't even say sorry properly and bhooshhh...Dan forgave him. He is too good for Brian :(

I loved this book, I couldn't put it down. I think it may be my current favorite. Great characters, good story to keep you wondering what was going on. It's one I will read again.

daniel eames seem very not bright for a bodyguard, and an ex police detective at that. i give a one star because of that. but, for an unpredictable story in the end, i give this one more.

I got this book because an excerpt was included at the end of Nightmare Come True, and it sounded good so I bought a copy. Although it was somewhat predictable, I still enjoyed it.
