"This is what we had chosen for ourselves--with bullets, riots, and a war that was tearing the country apart, this man who had accused innocent people of being communists, who had chosen a vice-presidential candidate who used the word 'nigger' in public, who used any stepping-stone he could to climb toward the highest office in the land."

I shivered when I read that line. Published in 2001 and set in August 1968, Nelscott has no right to that kind of prescience.

The second book in the Smokey Dalton series, Smoke Filled Rooms centers on Chicago during one hot and emotional August when the Democratic National Convention comes to town. Smokey was hoping to find a safe home in Chicago for himself and Jimmy, after barely escaping Memphis with their lives, but it doesn't look like peace will come any time soon. Although couch space with his friend Franklin and his family gives them respite while Smokey looks for new space, it soon comes to an end.

Like the best mysteries, Smoke Filled Rooms is rich in time and place. The feeling of a contentious, insecure America shows on every page, from the perspective of a black man trying to keep his head down while events unfold around him. Prior connections have brought them to Chicago, a city on high alert after the assassinations of MLK and Robert Kennedy. Smokey's doing his best to stay out of politics, but his job in security at the Hilton means he is on the front lines professionally. Home is overshadowed by undercover cops doing their best to scare locals into submission, and a neighbor asking for a favor to find a missing boy.

Nelscott has written a solid mystery thriller, the story of a man doing his best to protect his child while seeking a murderer. Unlike many detectives, Smokey quickly becomes enmeshed in the local community. One of my favorite things about this book, and likely the series, is the sense of community connection. But what makes Nelscott's stories stand out is the one-two combination of the time period from the perspective of a black man. It seems marvelously well done, and it was only late in the book that I noticed how well the racial tables had shifted; characters are assumed black unless specifically mentioned as white. Neighborhoods are mentally categorized into 'safe' for blacks, and 'unsafe,' with the caveat that a black presence in some places will result in a police presence. But the times, they are a changin', and even Smokey finds his old stereotypes challenged when his former white--and rich--girlfriend Laura is brought back into the picture.

But are the times really changing? If there was one point (accidentally) hammered home, it's that maybe things haven't changed all that much. Recent killings of black people in Chicago by the police, protests against the system and the rhetoric of particular candidates all sound scarily familiar. Being an indifferent history student, I wasn't expecting to love Smoke Filled Rooms. But take historical politics and wrap it around a heart-pounding mystery, and you can even teach me. An excellent book on so many levels.

Four and a half hazy stars, rounding up because this series deserves some attention.

Σε αυτο το βιβλίο, παρακολουθούμε τα γεγόνοτα που διαδραματίστηκαν στη ζωή του Αφρο-Αμερικανού ντετέκτιβ Σμόκι Ντάλτον, μετά τη δολοφονία του παιδικού φίλου του και εξέχουσας προσωπικότητας, Μάρτιν Λούθερ Κίνγκ, και τις συνέπειες, πρίν και ύστερα από το πολυαναμενόμενο Συνέδριο των Δημοκρατικών, τον Αύγουστο του 1968 στο Σικάγο.

Για άλλη μια φορά, η Νέλσκοτ γράφει με τέτοιο άμεσο τρόπο, ώστε δίνει την αίσθηση ότι βρίσκεται, εκείνη τη στιγμή, στο 'παλμό' των γεγονότων, τοποθετώντας καί τον αναγνώστη εκεί μέσω ενος φαντασιακού 'ταξιδιού' στο χρόνο. Πέρα από αυτό, η δράση δεν είναι τόσο έντονη εδώ, ωστόσο, διαφαίνονται έντονα τα στοιχεία του ψυχολογικού θρίλερ μέσα από την καχυποψία και την αίσθηση του Σμόκυ Ντάλτον ότι συνεχώς τον παρακολουθούν. Αργότερα, κατά τη διαλεύκανση της υπόθεσης, όμως, οι έντονες αυτές περιγραφές θα αποτελέσουν και το κλειδί για τη ταυτότητα του δολοφόνου.

Γενικά, πρόκειται για ένα μυθιστόρημα-συνέχεια, το οποίο μπορεί να διαβαστεί και χωρίς το 1ο μέρος του, δηλ.το 'Ένας επικίνδυνος δρόμος', γιατί η συγγραφέας, έξυπνα και με συνθετικό τρόπο, αναφέρει τα σημαντικότερα γεγονότα που προηγήθηκαν. Ωστόσο, εδώ, υπάρχει μια έντονη τάση για 'ψυχογραφική' μελέτη των ηρώων, οι οποίοι είναι και δέσμιοι των πολιτικών γεγονότων και της ιστορίας. Θέματα όπως ο ρατσισμός, τα πολιτικά παιχνίδια, η φρίκη του πολέμου του Βιετνάμ, η επιδραση των fast-food, της αστρολογίας και της χαρτομαντείας αντιμετωπίζονται με ειλικρίνεια και καυστική έμμεση κριτική.

'Αλλωστε δεν είναι τυχαίος ο τίτλος του μυθιστορήματος: 'Δωμάτια γεμάτα καπνό' = φράση-κλισέ που περιγράφει τα γεμάτα καπνό κλειδωμένα γραφεία μέσα στα οποία λευκοί πολιτικοί κλείνουν σκοτεινές συμφωνίες με το πούρο κολλημένο στο στόμα (Τζακ Σνέντλερ).

Υ.Γ.: Οφείλω να πω ότι η μετάφραση του βιβλίου είναι ιδιαίτερα εύστοχη (σε λίγα μόνο σημεία, υπάρχουν λάθη λόγω βιασύνης).

Smokey has relocated to Chicago, site of the Democratic Convention and 'Yippie' protests. Another powerfully delivered story with an excellent narrator.

Jimmy (now Smokey's unofficially adopted son) is the focus of a lot of the story, but comes across inadvertantly unsympathetically because he both knows the seriousness of his situation yet seems to never behave as if he understands he's in a serious situation.

Αυστηρά μέτρα ασφαλείας, αγώνας επιβίωσης να μην εντοπιστεί ο Σμόκι και το παιδί και μια σειρά δολοφονιών έγχρωμων μικρών παιδιών είναι ελάχιστα από τα προβλήματα που έχει να αντιμετωπίσει ο ντετέκτιβ.

Το μυθιστόρημα, εν αντιθέσει με το προηγούμενό του, είναι περισσότερο κοινωνικό παρά αστυνομικό, αν εξαιρέσεις τα τελευταία κεφάλαια με τις δολοφονίες των παιδιών και τη μεγάλη ανατροπή γύρω από την ταυτότητα του ενόχου. Λατρεμένη η διαπίστωση του Σμόκι Ντάλτον στο τέλος του βιβλίου: «Αισθανόμουν όπως η πόλη, εξωτερικά αλώβητος αλλά εσωτερικά διαλυμένος» (σελ. 387).

Ο Σμόκι προσπαθεί να παραμείνει στην αφάνεια, τα χρήματα όμως του τελειώνουν κι αναγκάζεται να ψάξει για δουλειά, με αποτέλεσμα να είναι ανάμεσα στους φύλακες του ξενοδοχείου όπου θα γίνει το Συνέδριο. Ταυτόχρονα, η γυναίκα του φίλου που τον φιλοξενεί του ζητά να ψάξει να βρει ένα εξαφανισμένο παιδί φίλης της, το ένα φέρνει το άλλο και ο Σμόκι ξαναπιάνει τη δουλειά του ντετέκτιβ, κινούμενος όμως διακριτικά και εντελώς διαφορετικά από το αν δούλευε κανονικά. Ο αδερφός μάλιστα του εξαφανισμένοι παιδιού, ο Ντάνιελ Κέρκλαντ, ανακατεύεται με κάποιες οργανώσεις και θα μας απασχολήσει σε επόμενο βιβλίο της σειράς (η συγγραφέας έχει γράψει μέχρι στιγμής πέντε συνολικά).

Εξαιρετικά δοσμένη ατμόσφαιρα, αγωνία και ανατροπές, κυνήγι ενάντια στον χρόνο και μια σκληρή αλήθεια για όποιον κρύβετ��ι πίσω από όλα αυτά είναι χαρακτηριστικά που αγάπησα σε αυτό το βιβλίο ενώ η λύση που δίνεται για την περίπτωση του Τζίμι είναι καθησυχαστική, μιας και πιστεύω πως δε θα μπορούσαν να υπάρξουν πολλά βι��λία με τους δυο τους να τρέχουν από πόλη σε πόλη (πόσες συμπτώσεις πια;). Περιγραφές πόλεων, σπιτιών, χαρακτήρων και στενά δεμένη αλληλουχία γεγονότων, εκπλήξεις και εμπόδια, μελετημένη και τεκμηριωμένη ιστορικά υπόθεση και ένα ήρεμο σχετικά φινάλε, τι άλλο θέλει κάποιος για να χαθεί σε δωμάτια γεμάτα καπνό;

Set against the backdrop of the Democratic Convention in Chicago, right after the assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King; the events and attitudes are chilling while the strength and detective work of Smokey Dalton resonates. Well written, I am eager to read the next book.

Altogether this is a bit too pedestrian for 4 or 5 Stars: nevertheless, a worthwhile book.
"Smoke-Filled Rooms" was published in 2001, 18 years ago and 33 years after the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, the time and place the book is set.
Besides the adventure Smokey Dalton has as he transfers his efforts from Memphis to Chicago, Nelscott also examines and describes the City of Chicago as it was back them. The police, the racism, the tension which built into a Convention which almost destroyed the Democratic Party. We do have books specifically about the convention and the protests, but they don't entertain as well as Smokey does, and they don't explain the racism and general societal complexion which existed in this country as the 60s drew to a close. What Nelscott calls 'The Year of Assassination", which is accurate for many of us who lived through it.

Το βιβλίο αναφέρεται στην εποχή μετά την δολοφονία του Μάρτιν Λούθερ Κινγκ στο Μέμφις και την δολοφονία του Ρόμπερτ Κέννεντι στο Λος Άντζελες που θεωρήθηκε ως αντίποινα. Στο Σικάγο ετοιμάζεται το Συνέδριο των Δημοκρατικών και στο Λίνκολν Πάρκ οι διάφορες οργανώσεις των ένχρωμων ετοιμάζουν διαδηλώσεις διαμαρτυρίας. Another excellent story in the Smokey Dalton series. He has made his escape to Chicago, and is starting a new life for himself and Jimmy. But the past catches up, and the Democratic Convention makes life difficult for Smokey. Another good mystery, and another story that makes me want to catch up on 1960's US. I have to admit, I have been pretty ignorant of the way blacks were treated, and how they lived with the discrimination and unfairness by the government and other whites. I'll ascribe that partly to being Canadian...we didn't experience race relations in quite the same way. It is especially interesting to read these stories at this time when the whole Black Lives Matter movement is making waves.

Great Sequel

Sometimes when you read a good book that’s the first in a series you’re almost afraid to read the second book because you don’t want to be disappointed. Well, there’s nothing disappointing in the 2nd book in the Smokey Dalton series. It continues to have a great, pulse beating plot, well developed characters and is infused with enough history of real events to make you wonder if the author was there at the time the events were occurring. I really love Smokey’s character and loved the new characters that are introduced. My only ding is I wish we could have seen more of Laura, their relationship is as unresolved as ever! Looking forward to reading the next book, this series is gettin addictive!

Another excellent Smokey Dalton novel. Smokey and Jimmy are running from the feds. They arrive in Chicago during the Democratic Convention in 1968. Smokey's neighbor tells him that someone is stalking him. Smokey hides Jimmy with his white girlfriend, Lauri.

A little boy is killed in the neighborhood. Smokey figures out that the killer thought the little boy was Jimmy.

Excellent characters, plot and the excitement just never ends.

I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Smokey Dalton 2

Kris Nelscott continues the series in the turbulence of the Viet Nam era. The Democrat convention in Chicago is fraught with violence and leads to the election of Richard Nixon. However Smokey, Jimmy and Laura are fighting their own battles.

Smoked filled rooms is an extremely well written novel with well developed characters and an excellent story line. Another winner !!

Great Series

This series opened my eyes about what it was like to be a black in the 1960s, although that's when I was growing up in the south. Yes, I know it's fiction but I also know that it's based on fact. One of the best series I've read in a long time. I do recommend that you read them in order. I'm going for #3.

Dark and gritty detective story taking place around the Democratic Convention Hall in Chicago in the Sixties. The protesters, the riots, the police abuse provides not only a tangible feeling about how violent those few weeks were, but also provides a violent, steamy, tense background where the story takes place.

The second book in the Smokey Dalton series is every bit as good as the first. This one is set in Chicago during the 1968 Democratic Convention with all the racial tension and police/protester violence that went along with it. Fully developed characters and a fast paced storyline kept me reading late into the night. Highly recommended

Smoke-Filled Rooms is another great read about Smokey Dalton. I really enjoyed the read set in Chicago during a time of unrest. Book has great story line dropped into history. Story stands on its own but better if read in order. Looking forward to the next book about Smokey Dalton

This is the second in the Smokey Dalton series. Smokey left Memphis after MLK’s assassination in order to save the life of the little boy, Jimmy, whom he rescued and who had seen the shooter, not the one the police had in custody. They went to Chicago, lived under assumed names with a friend of Smokey’s and he got a job at the Hilton Hotel doing security. But the Democratic Convention was occurring that summer in Chicago, and Smokey found himself right in the middle of the riots occurring because of the convention. Also, Black boys around the age of 10 were turning up dead. It might be a serial killer and only Smokey and one Black cop were aware of it. But a third boy turned up dead right at Smokey’s doorstep, and he knew then that one zealot from Memphis had followed him to Chicago, and Jimmy still needed to be hidden and Smokey would have to trace down this FBI zealot. Also very good.

Kris Nelscott's Smoke Filled Rooms continues the story of Smokey Dalton, an unlicensed black PI trying to make his way in the turbulent 1960s. This novel picks up shortly after the end of the events in A Dangerous Road. Smokey and his young charge, 10-year old Jimmy, have taken up residence in Chicago. Smokey is trying to keep a low profile in order to protect Jimmy, who witnessed the murder of Martin Luther King in Memphis. But a low profile is difficult to keep as political activists descend on Chicago for the 1968 Democratic National Convention and an old evil from Smokey's past returns to dog him. To keep Jimmy alive, Smokey has to get into the thick of the action and do some serious detecting.

Smokey Dalton and 10 year old Jimmy have landed in Chicago, still hiding from the threat to Jimmy because of what he saw of the King assassination. Smokey has found work as a security guard at the Conrad Hilton hotel. The hotel is filling up with politicians and security forces of all sorts in the days leading up leading up to the Democratic convention. Anti-war and civil rights groups, some peaceful, some not, are streaming into the city and law enforcement forces are mobilizing and arming, getting ready to quell a riot, or to start one.

As with Dangerous Road, the book brings the turmoil and confusion to life. It's a terrific picture of a terrible time.

From "A Dangerous Road" to "Smoke-Filled Rooms" and I don't do sequels.

Well, for a guy who never reads books that turn into a series I just downloaded number three with great hope it will lose it's captivating quality, and I can move on. Unfortunately, based on Nelscott's ability to create such interesting characters, and weave them into such dramatic and often frantic situations, it scares me to know there are several more Smokey Daltons on the horizon. Is there someone out there who knows how one gets off smoke filled train?

This was my second time through Smoke-Filled Rooms -- this time in audiobook format. It was if anything even better than the first read.
Smoky Dalton is a great character. I love this series and hope Kris Nelscott will continue it.

This is the second book in the Smokey Dalton series. Smokey is an African American detective in 1960s America.
On the run from events in Memphis, Smokey and young Jimmy are laying low in Chicago.
Adrift, not knowing his environment, Smokey gets involved in the investigation of a missing black child, while historic events again converge on him with the Democatic Convention about to explode.
A great suspenseful read.

This is a series that should be read in order. Smokey Dalton is from Memphis. In this book he is working as a security guard at the Hilton Hotel in the heart of Chicago. The 1968 Democrat Convention and the attending riots are swirling around him. Plus he must keep Jimmy safe. An excellent book. It is well written and the story flows smoothly.

So far so good although I still have a young Morgan Freeman in my head for Smoky.

Yep this was good, satisfying. Less a whodunnit than a mood mystery and whydunnit. Evocative and an age and time. Well written and credible.
