Wow...that's all a girl can say. July of 2013 I decided to hit publish on a little story called Save. Little did I know what would happen next. I started to get reviews...fan mail...Facebook and Twitter requests. To say I was floored is an understatement. I'm so touched by the welcoming response. More than anything, I am humbled by the thought that you...yes you...downloaded my work and liked it. Sure, I can't please everyone. That being said, the fact that you enjoyed my story/stories means so much more to me. I wish I could hang out with each and every one of you and make you understand what this all means to me. For now...I will say 'Thank you'. And, I will do my best to keep knocking out books as long as you keep reading them.
Love,
Ella

ARR Received from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I so needed a story like this today. Every now and then a simple story about falling in love without letting the complications of your past is just what you need to put a smile on your face. I feel like I this story just rinsed the bad taste of the last book I read right out of my mouth.

Bree has decided to leave her abusive boyfriend but things don't go as planned, as she musters up the strength to tell him she is leaving - she barely escapes with her life. But Bree is not the typical book heroine that suffers from abuse and tries to bury it. She is going to deal with it - embrace life and move on.

She doesn't want to be just a survivor,
She doesn't want to be known as a victim,
She just wants to be Bree again.

When she is moving into her new home Josh catches her eye. He has bad-boy written all over him. Covered with ink, piercings and beautiful green eyes. Josh and Bree have an instant connection of attraction but the connection goes far beyond that. Her pain stirs up memories of his past - suffering that he and his roommate Eric have battled with for some time.

"What if I fall for you? But... you don't fall for me?"
I hate the guy who did this to her. Her head is filled with self-doubt and jaded memories of a toxic relationship. If she could just see that I am the guy who is about to change all that.
"I want you to fall for me, Bree. That's the plan. Don't worry about me falling for you. I'm already tripping my way to you...just a couple more clumsy steps."

There is a particular scene towards the end of this book that just hit me right in the heart. As much as I was able to get through the abuse portions of this story without getting emotional (since I was so focused on her being able to move forward and not being afraid to do so), there was a perfect moment in this book that brought out your emotions. It was tucked in there nicely and just where it was needed.

I truly enjoyed this story. The author was able to take a very difficult subject without taking you to a dark place. But the focal point isn't really the abuse that happened - it was the act of letting the scars that are on the inside heal so that you can trust someone - love someone and let go of the misplaced guilt and free yourself to be happy. It was a short read and one of those feel good - guilty pleasure romance stories.

I adored Bree and Josh. Eric and Lena's story still remains unknown - but I am glad to see that we will get a story for these two and will find out a little more about what has caused Lena to fear a relationship. Even though Eric was not the main character, he was well developed and was a vital part to the story.

Nick ... let's just say he got what he deserved. As for Sofie, I wanted to slap her from the start - a great job creating a character that you instantly dislike (and you are suppose to!).

I thoroughly enjoyed Josh & Bree's story and am looking forward to seeing what else Ella Col has in store for us in the future. I know that I will be picking up her future works.

I give this book 3.5 stars

If you love stories about broken souls, tattooed rocker boys, and overcoming emotional obstacles- then Save is for you!

Bree knows pain, true physical pain. Unfortunately, she got herself into a relationship that she couldn't get away from. She was scared, she was ashamed, she blamed herself. The day she finally got away was the day he almost killed her.

Fast forward a year or two- she moves on and finds a new job she loves. While moving into her new home, the neighbors Josh and Eric stop over to lend a hand. Josh and Eric have a passion for music. They produce some indie bands as well as playing in their own band. Josh feels the instant connection to Bree, it's electric.
Josh and Eric have been best friends for a long, long time. They share a painful past that continues to haunt them. They both have seen rock bottom, but fate brought him a step ladder, and her name is Bree.

I did like this story a lot, however I found myself wanting more. It's a short read, and I know not every novel can be 200+ pages, but it seemed.something was missing to me.

One thing I didn't like so much is what Bree would repeat over and over to to Josh. I won't say it here, but those who have or will read it will understand what I'm talking about. Me, personally, I understand why she says it, but not everyone will. I think the author should have made a point to explain it.

Let me say- the ONLY reason I am giving this book 4 stars is for some minor editing errors which I can easily fix while reading and they don't bother me, but I do realize that they bother others so I have to take that into account.

Bree and Josh's story hit home for me in a big way. It was heart wrenching, it was beautiful- it was essentially what I lived. Now- I know some people will say the inevitable- people don't fall in love that fast- blah, blah, blah. I cringe every time I read a comment like that. Yes, some people do. It DOES happen so get over it.

I just want to commend Ella Cole on this first book. I usually expect something to be okay when it is free and am happy when it is just good, but this book was excellent. I cannot wait to read more by this author.

I also love the playlist.

I liked this book. It was a good story, and it moved a long pretty quickly. Although that may be one complaint too. Josh and Bree moved quickly feelings wise. They acted like they knew each other longer than they actually had. But thats a minor complaint, because after the first few chapters you forget about that anyway.

FAVORITE QUOTES

By dressing like a porn star, it doesn't leave much for me to explore later on. These girls are showing their cards way before they won the hand. Not, Bree. Her cards are hidden well. And, I love a good card game.

~ Josh

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I won't hurt you. Kay? Permission to go Twilight?" I ask. All chicks love Twilight right? I had to find a way for Bree to get how I feel about her but also get the conversation back to a comfortable level.
"Twilight? Like Edward Cullen… Twilight?" She giggles.
"Depends. Are you a Jacob or Edward fan?" I'm getting in to my role.
"Both."
sh*t. She had to make this really hard for me. "Okay… here it goes. You remember the first movie when Edward says he feels very protective of Bella?"
"Classic Line. Of course."
"I feel very protective of you." I'm pretty sure I got the Edward line down. I had to really search may brain for a Jacob line. Suddenly, it hits me. I got the perfect line but I'm not sure if it was second of the third movie. I take a risk. "I'm exactly right for you, Bree."
~Josh and Bree
Wow. This is my Disney Princess moment. Sure, he is not the clean-cut prince you see in the movies. But, the butterflies in my stomach don't care that he doesn't fit in the mold. Plus, it is about time Disney introduces a prince with tattoos and a lip ring, don't you think?
~Bree (and YES I agree! Even if it is a movie for just the parents!)
Bree lived as Nick told her to, did what he demanded of her, for two years. A new job gives her a chance for change- and nearly ends her life.
Moving to a new house gives her the fresh start she needs so desperately- and introduces her to her fantastic rocker neighbors, Josh and Eric. Josh, the tattooed bad boy with the bruised heart. Eric, the big brother who hurts as much as Josh does.
Quickly attraction turns to love- and Josh is the perfect man. He's the man all women hunt for- he speaks his mind, feels things so deeply, and not only feels them but actually says them aloud. Bree blossoms, and he begins to heal.
But fairy tales can't be perfect the whole way through- there has to be a bad guy, and he's well established from the beginning. Twists and turns kept this book from being boring, and the ending had me in tears quite unexpectedly. Highly recommended, even though it needs a bit of editing to perfect it. There were a few misspelled words, and some words missing from sentences. Those minor errors did nothing to detract from an incredible love story where the characters leap off the pages. 5 stars!
This book is amazing and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has been through any sort of abuse. I would recommend it to anyone, really. It is a very touching and emotionally story. It is also hopeful! Bree went through physical and emotional abuse but learned that she can still feel love. Bree and Josh are great but it also shows that the secondary characters are just as flawed. I loved Eric and Lena as much as I loved the main characters. I can't begin to describe the emotions I felt reading this story. Once I started reading this, I could not put it down. Finished it in one sitting, dying to know what happened next. Ella Col is an amazing, talented writer and I look forward to reading every book she has put together. Definitely a 5 star read!
This book has my heart!!!!
I got this book from the author in exchange for an honest review...
excellent photo: Excellent excellent.gif
this book is about abuse. anyone you know could be a person of abuse, and not even know it. Bree was one of them. She thought she had the man of her life in college. He wined and dined her. told her all the good things that she needed to hear. Her parents died, so he was her only family. Things started to get bad. She had to dress and act a certain way. She couldn't have any friends or any contact with anyone. One day she had enough. she was going to leave him. When he came home from dinner in a good mood she told him that it was over. He hit her and choked her. She was going to die. That was until a neighbor saw that their grill was on fire and called 911.
Bree was leaving with her best friend Sophie for a while. She now has a great job writing for a newspaper for indie bands. She got her first apartment and was reading to start a new life. She met a girl at work who will help with the indie singers. she takes the pictures. Her name is Lena. She will become Bree's new best friend. That is when she met Josh. he was her neighbor. He offered to help carry her boxes into the house. She was thankful that he did that, and also thought he was cute. Sophie found him disgusting. Only because he had tons of tattoos and piercings. Josh invited both of the girls to a party at his house because he plays in a band.
Bree got all dressed up and Sophie hated her outfit. She couldn't believe how Bree was acting. Bree told her friend that this is who she always were. Sophie was so upset that she left the concert. She went to bed. Bree and josh got to hit it off. it was an instant spark. they knew that they wanted to be together. Well, one thing lead to another and they spent the night at Josh's house..no nothing happened..lol
Sophie left without saying goodbye. She than letter sent a letter stating that Bree deserved everything she got from her ex boyfriend and went on with a long list of why she was horrible and that she was going to tell her ex everything that she is doing, and then she was going to date him.
the rest of the story will go on and follow Bree and Josh's relationship. Josh is very protective of Bree because his sister was killed by her ex boyfriend. Eric is Josh's roommate and was his sister current boyfriend before it happened. Eric is starting to be interested in her friend Lena, but both Lena and Eric have dark daemons that have to face before they can start dating. Josh is determined to make Bree happy. Their love couldn't get any stronger.. that is until Josh gets drunk and tests the waters..
that was until the phone calls started. Now their lives are going to change forever. Can josh keep Bree safe from her ex boyfriend or will Josh loose another love to abuse?!
I love this story. I normally don't like first-person, but the narrative switches between Josh and Bree give insight into their personalities and motivations. It was easy to see why these two connected and it felt natural. Secondary characters Eric and Lena were well-developed and so likable.
Bree was nearly killed by her abusive college boyfriend. It's a couple of years later and she has made a fresh start, she seems strong and healed. The ex apparently got off with a slap on the wrist, probation and some anger management. Moving into a new place with the help of her bitchy friend Sophie, Bree meets Josh, a neighbor. Sparks fly immediately between them, and she accepts an invitation to watch his band play. Their relationship has ups and downs but no big-misunderstandings.
What I liked:
Bree- No victim here, she had a positive attitude and was determined to reclaim her identity. I liked how she wasn't afraid to explore the strong attraction between herself and Josh. She's only 22 but possessed maturity. I loved how she handled a confrontation with an ex-lover of Josh's. Also, when Josh made a poor choice which hurt her greatly, her reaction was genuine and I love how she worked through it with him.
Josh - He's almost too good to be true but he definitely isn't perfect. He's never been in love and meeting Bree is a revelation. He doesn't fight his feelings, he embraces them and it is so sweet to hear his inner dialogue about his feelings for her. Very romantic.
Eric - We get some good background on his character. Liked him so much, a great guy who has been dealt some devastating blows. He's a great loyal friend. The next book is about him and I am really looking forward to starting it (as soon as I am done with this review :)
Lena - Bree's new co-worker. She becomes a true friend to Bree and is very likable. She and Eric have something going on but it seems to be complicated and not easy to define. I know I'll find out more in the next book.
Minor sticking points, they play into the story so I get why they were included:
*******Spoilerish*********
Sophie - She was one-dimensional, negative, judgmental and self-centered. I can't see Bree being friends with someone like her when she seemed to be on a positive course in life. It seems to me she would have jettisoned such a negative person.
No condom - I find it hard to believe someone who admittedly only has casual sexual relationships wouldn't be sure to have them on hand and use them. Especially since Josh (sweetly) didn't jump into bed with Bree right away because he wanted it to be special.
Nick - Considering he attempted to murder her it seems unlikely he wouldn't have served jail time.
**********END SPOILER*********
There are some minor edits needed but nothing that spoils the story experience.
I definitely recommend this book, it's a keeper.
I don't even know where to start with this book. Somehow I managed to finish the book, even though I skimmed.
The only good thing about the book, in my opinion, is the "You can get help for domestic abuse" blurb at the back of the book.
***I received a copy of Save in exchange for an honest review.***
Bree has left a relationship after enduring years of abuse. She has moved to a different town and is trying to start her life over. She has her own place and a new job. The last thing on her mind is jumping into another relationship. Josh has endured his own tragic past. While he enjoys the company of women, he doesn't have any feelings for them and has no intention of having a relationship. Neither one of them realize fate has something else in store for them. Josh is Bree's new neighbor, and he helps her move some of her things into her apartment. From their first meeting, they have a unbelievable sexual attraction to each other. As time passes, they begin to develop deeper feelings for each other. But, their pasts soon catch up with them and deals them a devastating blow. Will their new love be strong enough to survive it? Most importantly, will they, themselves, survive the devastation?
I enjoyed Save. It was fast paced, and the story took off from the very first page. I always like stories of two lost and broken souls finding and healing each other, so this book was right up my alley. The book is a hot, steamy romance, but there are darker issues that are discussed...domestic abuse. I could tell that this issue is very important to the author. She includes information at the end of the book to help victims of domestic abuse get help. I always like a book that has the ability to change someone's life. I just wish Save was a little longer. Great book! I will be reading the next book in the series, Broken.
**I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads
I will honestly say that I am very surprised at how much I liked this book, given how far it lies from the books I typically read.
It seems that every character in Save had some insane tragedy that they were working to recover from. It seems a bit over the top, but Ella Col did an amazing job at bringing the reader into the mind of the character by using the split POV writing through both Josh and Bree's perspectives.
This short book was definitely a read in a night or two kinda book and it makes you not want to put it down. It is jam packed with action and drama and just when you think it can't get any worse, it does, but in the best sense.
It would be interesting to see if a second novel written in the same manner would be as interesting of a read because this book covered so much ground - I'm not entirely sure where the story can be taken next. I do think the book about Lena/Eric will be a very good read because although we got introduced to them and know the overview of their story, seeing into their minds would be very eye opening having only witnessed them through Josh & Bree.
Although I was entranced by this book the whole way through, I think it would have been even better had Bree's story was expanded in the beginning and that she hadn't met Josh so early on in her recovery. I think in a sense watching her struggle on her own dealing with her issues would have made her love for the relationship of Josh & Bree even stronger.
Overall, this is an easy read with many life lessons that can be taken away.
BEAUTIFUL!
The only word to describe a perfect love found by 2 imperfect people.
"SAVE" is the story of a relationship - the growth and healing evolving past just romance into something more!
It's a fantastic story of broken lives being healed by the power of love and acceptance. A story that really hit me emotionally.
22 year old Bree Jensen has been physically abused and hurt by the "perfect" boyfriend. He's handsome, smart, and has life by the tail. But he's also hiding the darkness and cruelty inside him. Leaving only Bree to suffer the "real" Nick in private.
A near-death experience gives the perfect opportunity at a new life. Taking it, she meets Josh - the handsome, incredibly, talented and tattooed neighbor.
But he isn't without his own baggage, which parallels Bree in so many ways leaving him also damaged.
Throw in some well developed characters (who turn out to be incredible friends), some twists and turns, a friendship gone sour with jealousy, and an incredible sexual heat and you have the makings of a beautiful story!
Seeing the progression of love, trust & loyalty between the two main characters was inspiring and deep. its this relationship that becomes so strong that even a terrible event with a traumatic ending doesn't have the ability to destroy them.
Ella Col captures the pain, heartbreak, lust, and love found in the reality of life and portrays it easily with emotion and understanding so that the reader is swept into the story. I look forward to reading more of her work!
First off I would like to thank the author for allowing me to read her book. I was given this book for an honest review.
I want to start where the story starts off. I wanted to reach through my kindle and strangle the crap out of Nick. I dispise people like him. He is the epittomy of evil vile creatures. Bree had to make a hard descision and I was glad she made the right one. Next we are introduced to Sophie. She was snarky condecending and rude.( Another one that I was not a fan of.) Josh and Eric were a breath of fresh air in the middle of a very heavy book. I enjoyed the way the author had Bree, Josh, Eric and Lena interact.
I found it a bit crazy that Bree and Josh had such a hot and heavy relationship but once I read the whole story I understood. When 2 people have had a tragic past they can conect instantly. The love making seens are very hot and heavy as well. So if your a shy person warning this book isn't for you.
The end of this book had me in tears. Even though the middle of the book is fairly light and easy going it still is about domestic abuse. It broke my heart even with all the love that these two people had for each other they still had more taken from them. ( Lyric)
The only draw back I had with this book is the over use of the "F" word
I really hope that you give the book a chance for yourself
Reading books about physical abuse is never easy, but Ella Col does a wonderful job showing Bree transition from a broken victim, to a strong survivor, to finding how to be herself again.
Bree has been in an abusive relationship for two years. The reader first meets her as she wakes up in the hospital after almost losing her life- all for trying to leave her boyfriend, Nick.
Moving to a new city, in a new home, loving her new job, she’s determined to find herself. The one thing she’s not looking for his love. It’s here she meets the ever charming, dangerous, tattooed, green eyed, bad boy , Josh. (Swoon!)
"I want you to fall for me, Bree. That's the plan. Don't worry about me falling for you. I'm already tripping my way to you...just a couple more clumsy steps." (Cheesy, yes, but I totally fell for it!)
Bree finds comfort in Josh, but her comfort in opening up, is his pain. Just when she’s thinking she found someone to open up to, she’s found a man who may be just as lost as her. Josh has his own daemons haunting in the shadows. It’s together that they learn how to deal with their pasts in order to move on- together.
Save has twists and turns that kept me on the edge of me seat towards the end. This is a fast and easy read if you have an afternoon or evening alone.
**Note, this does discuss a strong subject matter… I would recommend for 17+**
I got a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
From the moment I started reading I was hooked. I read it in one sitting..I enjoyed the characters a lot. Loved Bree & Josh. And I loved Eric. Loved how all of the characters meshed & the author really makes you hate the enemies in the story.
Bree is starting a new life, she meets Josh &Eric. There are sparks immediately between Josh & Bree. I feel like I should say things moved fast for them but I don't want to. I couldn't wait for them to finally get there. Josh & Eric have experience with the things that happened in Bree 's past so they are protective of her...I love how they made themselves into the family they all needed.
The ending had me on the edge of my seat. I was very excited to get the chance to read this book. And I would recommend It to everyone.
Excited to learn Lena & Eric will have their own story! I cant wait for that..and I'm definitely interested in reading more from this author.
This was a at times hard to read (because of issues presented) but ultimately redemptive New Adult romance. Bree and Josh were adorable together, and Josh being a tattooed and pierced rocker was a nice foray away from clean cut guys to read about. The domestic violence presented in this novel hit rather close to home, but it was nice to see it all dealt with in a real and harsh way.
The only problem I had with this read was the writing; it could have stood to be edited a bit more and kind of flipped between talking to the reader to just the plain old first person. It took me out of the experience a couple of times.
I'd say if you like New Adult, rocker boys, and books that deal with hard to deal with issues in the right way, then give this a try. I got it for Free over @ Amazon. I will try and remember to look for more of the author's work since it says she is coming out with 2 more stories.
It takes a lot to emotionally affect me. Being one who has gone through a lot, I consider myself a strong person.
But this book... this book rocked me to my core.
Bree Jenson is a 22 year old survivor. Her last boyfriend was abusive in every way imaginable, and yet even those closest to her chide her for leaving such a 'perfect' man.
When she moves in across from Josh, he is the total opposite of her ex. But Josh has a painful past: his little sister, his only sibling, was killed by an abusive ex she went back to. Together, Josh and Bree learn to live with their past, and how to love.
SAVE brought me to my knees. The characters are so beautifully broken, so artfully and completely destroyed, that you feel every ounce of pain they feel. And you WANT them to overcome, you pray they will succeed in their path.
I will never tire of revisiting these characters, and I am so very glad Ella allowed them to become a part of my life!
Amazing story!!
Two people with a past.
Bree is finally able to start over away from the man who did nothing but put her down and abuse her. She is ready to start a new life and be happy.
Josh has some of his own demons that haunt him, but when he firsts sees Bree unloading her car he cant stop staring at her.
Love is the last thing either of them were looking for.
The connection between these two is strong and develops fast.
Josh is sexy, confident, talented and is sweet to Bree.
When Bree's past comes to catch up with her will josh be strong enough to hold it together and be there for her? Will his feelings for Bree be enough to fight his demons and be there???
Man i need a josh for myself! so sweet and sexy! Loved the chemistry between these 2 plus the other characters are a big part of this to and they all worked great together! I was when i was done reading i wanted more of Bree and Josh
I have to say I was so Happy that this book was offered as a FREE KINDLE download on AMAZON. I downloaded it, and read it in a few hours. I was hooked. I could not put it down. I was immediately drawn in on Bree's story. The courage and determination that she had to LIVE her life and find LOVE was so heartwarming.
Josh and Bree both work to overcome their tragedies and past and find one another, Find love. I loved how Josh, Eric, and Lena all became her family it added so much to the story. I am so happy to know that Lena and Eric's story will continue, because I did NOT want this book to end.
This book was part of the eleven books in the From Darkness Comes Hope: A Sexual Assault Survivors Anthology. Being a survivor myself I wanted to be able to support the cause as well as read books by some amazing authors.
Save caught my attention from the beginning. It wasn't about just the assault but about being a survivor; about what it takes to overcome the abuse. While each book that is in that anthology was based on sexual assault, this book stated the facts but showed all the ways a person must overcome to live and not just survive. I can see how this book become more about the struggles in life than abuse. Kudos to the author.
I really wish this book had been longer. I loved it so much, Bree and Josh were such a amazing couple that I could not put the book done. I was a short and sexy book but it packed a punch. I really did not know what to expect when I started this book and was glad that I had nothing to do that day because I did not stop until I was finished. I cannot wait to read the next one because Eric and Lena's story looks great and I sure hope there is a little more of Bree and Josh in there as well.
A brilliant short read full of optimism.
Bree escapes from an abusive relationship. Moving house and starting a new job afford her the opportunity to build a new life. Bree meets Josh, her new neighbour, whilst moving into the house. An instant attraction is obvious from the start, Josh is everything her ex isn't. Will Bree be able to trust Josh and find happiness or will her past come back to haunt her.
The abuse that Bree suffers is horrific but the way that she refuses to give up on life is inspiring. Josh and Eric are great characters with their own issues.
I really enjoyed this book every once in awhile I need read like this:) It was perfect, was not over the top sappy, not over the top with drama it was just perfect love story. The best part was that Save is a page turner keeps you thinking, and wanting to know.
This was a truly beautiful story. It is a simple love story with a very serious background. My heart broke for Bree and Sophie. The fact that everybody was a victim of a similar tragedy, makes it even more special. Josh and Bree's love story was beautiful and very touching. I can't wait for the other books.
As unrealistic as it is, I love that Ms. Col doesn't keep the "victims" of DV living as victims. The characters in Save were able to move on and make a life for themselves. I certainly wish more DV victims would become fighters like Bree and keep with the charges as well as break free of their situation.
I truly enjoyed this book. I read it in one sitting. I loved that the characters had real issues and were very relatable.... that said I had a problem with editing and wished the story was a little longer certain part felt a little rushed.
cannot wait for Lana and Eric's story.
