Paul Davis, a top ACC executive is found dead in the boardroom of the Minneapolis-based company. The Board of Directors claims it was suicide. And why not? Davis was discovered with a pearl-handled revolver in his hand and a bullet wound to his head.
Detective Ray Schiller and his partner Dick Waverly, however, are far from convinced. Why would Davis kill himself less than twenty-four hours after finally taking over his late father-in-law's company? The Board and Davis's successor are quick to provide answers, but their actions suggest they're hiding something. And they aren't the only ones keeping secrets--not by a long shot.
Complications infiltrate the investigation as well as Ray's personal life, and what originally seemed to be a relatively straightforward case takes a turn that puts his and Waverly's lives in serious jeopardy.
I highly recommend this series. I read the first book DEAR CROSSING earlier this week and loved it. Marjorie Swift Doering has developed excellent characters. The main character is obviously Ray Schiller. I recommend you start with Dear Crossing I ordered Shadow Tag as soon as I finished the first novel. I finished shadow Tag last night after which I ordered Book 3 and 4. Targeted and Webb of Silence This series is a mystery series. You truly will not be able to figure out Whodunit Once you try number one you will love it
“Shadow Tag”, second in the 'Ray Schiller' series, is a continuation of the first. This time he's investigating the death of Paul Davis, an Executive Director of ACC who had just been elected CEO. In “Dear Crossing” his wife was murdered and, for a while, he was the chief suspect. But the circumstances of his death don't seem to add up. The one fact which would prove that it was a murder is withheld by the author for quite a while - I'm not sure that it was a good idea. But, overall, it is a solid police procedural with a glimpse into Ray's fractured marriage. 3 Stars.
There're lots of suspects to consider in this murder mystery, none of whom are well-developed characters. The two detectives on the case, however, are well-defined and interact in a reasonable fashion. The plot is not overly suspenseful, but enough to keep the reader turning pages. I recommend this novel and look forward to reading others in the Ray Schiller series.
I struggled through this book at several points, if I'm being honest. At times it felt slow & unremarkable, especially at the beginning. But I stuck to it & ground it out (never the best thing for a book) after one or two glimmers of hope early on. The story is okay, and on a scale of 1-10 it's captivating power is at a 5 to me. Would I re-read it? I don't think so. But it makes for an okay passive read.
When Paul Davis, an executive is found dead in the boardroom of ACC the rest of the board declare it was suicide. Schiller and his new partner Dick Waverly are not convinced. An enjoyable and easy to read mystery. Though I would have preferred to have less of the personal side of the detectives in the story.
A great book #2 in the Ray Schiller series. This takes off right where Dear Crossing left. It's a fast paced book full of twists and turns. I'm currently reading the third installment Remains. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves a good mystery.
Ray Schilling and his partner, Dick Waverly, are investigating the murder of Paul Davis, president of the ACC company. Made to look like a suicide, the investigators doubt very much so that was the case. Why was he murdered and why was it made to look like he done himself in? So many secrets are stirring at ACC.
Everyone is questioned, some more than once. Who did it and why? The gun that was in Paul's hand was not the gun that killed him. Why wasn't there a suicide note? Or maybe there was???
Ray has just moved to Minneapolis to his new job as Detective. His wife and he are separated, but has gotten a phone call that his youngest daughter was involved in an accident and it was looking sort of bleak. He heads back to his home to be with his estranged wife and be at the bedside of his little girl. Will she survive and be okay?
Ray hasn't been sleeping well as of late due to the investigation and the thoughts of having left his family because of his wife's infidelity. He still loves her. Can he forgive her?
Every time I thought I figured out who had done the murder, I was wrong. I was surprised as to who it was and why.
I had won this book through the Goodreads Giveaway. I thoroughly enjoyed this read.
I wish I could give Ms. Doering more than five lousy stars--Shadow Tag was truly excellent! For some reason, I missed the fact that this is book #2--oops! No matter! You can follow it with no problem and I've already purchased book #1, Deer Crossing--can't wait to start it! I am a stickler for good dialogue and this author delivers and delivers and delivers! Her main characters, Detective Ray Schiller and Dick Waverly are so well fleshed and their banter is pithy, witty, smart--excellent! I just love them!
Paul Davis, the newly elected president of ACC-a big company, has just committed suicide--or has he? At first all the physical evidence points in that direction, including the pearl handled .38 in his hand. Enter Ray Schiller and Dick Waverly-- now they're not so sure! The suspect list is getting heated and the lies are swirling around the office--who's telling the truth? Who was really in the office when Paul Davis died? Who had the biggest motive? Or is it all just smoke and mirrors? Ms. Doering writes a wonderful mystery filled with intrigue and twists that you won't want to miss! Want the down-low on Shadow Tag? You've got to down-load! This is a great read! This is what a mystery should be! 5 STARS!
I really enjoyed this follow up story to the previous book. It left off right where the previous book ended and all the pieces fit together nicely. Just as in Dear Crossing, the author kept you on your toes and you kept thinking the murderer was one person when in reality it was someone completely unsuspected which is a nice treat. The lead character, Ray, is a hard cop but a very honest one, or at least as honest as you can be in that line of work, after all, the world isn't pure black and white but he did what was right and still held to his human flaws that made you be able to connect to his character. The twists and turns with the various suspects always kept you wanting to continue reading and even though in a few spots, it got a little difficult to tell one character from another, things still made sense and with a couple of mini cliff-hangers as I call them, it was a great read.
5 start as in I enjoyed about as much as one can enjoy a book. I simply do not like the Goodreads ranking of 5 stars as 'It was amazing' please it's a work of fiction and a fine work of fiction especially if you are a mystery fan.
I'm not one to review most books but I will make an exception here in that I can really appreciate the character development. Doering covers many characters, some are stereotyped, particularly the wives of the wealthy executives being trophy wives and gold diggers but I've really come to like the relationship/partnership of Ray Schiller and Doug Waverly
Great read. I personally love the character of Ray Schiller, who is not your ordinary detective, he has a lot of baggage, but I still like him. This time a murder at Alliance Computer corporation has Ray and his partner Dick Waverly chasing leads throughout the corporate offices, including the security guards. I love this author's writing style and the way she weaves the tale. Their is just the write blend of murder, mystery and action in the novel and I am looking forward to more in the series.
I have not yet read the first Ray Schiller book, but there were enough references in Shadow Tag to past events that I did not find this a deterrent to my enjoyment (although it did make me want to read the first book). Ray and the secondary characters are well-developed and sympathetic. The mystery held my interest, as did the side issues of Ray's personal life. Marjorie Swift Doering writes very well, making for an easy read. Highly recommended.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in order to review it.
Some bad language but in character for the roles played. Good relationship betweenRay and his partner, Dick. Ray's neighbors need their own book. Haven't read the 1st book of series yet. Having more back story wasn't necessary. This book can stand on its own.
This is the second Ray Schiller book I've read and it is great. I really enjoy the depth of twists the author gives. It hooks you from the beginning but keeps you guessing until the end. Strongly recommend.
Before I read any book on kindle, I check for 4 letter words. If you are a frequent user of these words, read it. I am not. I found 91 hits on Damn; 26 hits on shit; 3 hits on f.... I have not and will not read the book.
The title is correct, this book is about the truth and the lies and it happens over and over again. What saved the book for me was the writing and the humor; the chAracters were also an integral part. Try it, you might like it more that I did.
I really like the reevaluation of Roy's relationship with his wife. It's a sensible evolution of the intimacy of two people. The story even deepened and further developed my own sense of wonder at the interaction between my husband and me.
A great book #2 in the Ray Schiller series. Just as exciting as book 1. I have already purchased book 3 and I am eager to get started reading it. I feel like Ray Schiller is a good friend of mine. I hope book 3 won't be the end of the series. I'm really going to miss him!
The story was intriguing and could keep my interest with twists and turns one doesn't expect. Definitely worth reading! Will be watching for more by this author.
An enjoyable easy read over morning coffee. A few too many characters covering the boardroom! Executives, secretaries, even the janitor, somewhat confusing at times.
