Hold Back the River

Rate this book
Three lives shattered by trauma. Two fatal decisions. One new beginning.

Returning to his empty childhood home by the river is harder than Patrick Moore expected. His memories of the riverbank were tainted the night he was arrested and his high school sweetheart went missing. After a fourteen year prison sentence, he searches for her, hoping to find companionship and a normal life.

Julia Collins is an adrenaline-junkie with one mission: outrun grief or die trying. After being furloughed for her mental health, she’s forced into sobriety and must navigate life without her poisons of choice — tequila and her job. That’s when she hits it off with the mysterious Patrick at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Fresh hope dawns in her heart, and she wonders if she can thrive despite her secrets and enjoy life again.

But it isn’t long before currents of regret rip them apart.

Can Patrick and Julia outlive the past? Or will they succumb to the river’s fury?

Hold Back the River, a contemporary romance set in Middle Tennessee, is a heart-rending story about how a lonely soul, a guilty conscience, and a broken heart find healing together at the river.

Have you ever read a book that just completely took you by surprise? This book did just that. This book 💯 consumed all my time while I was reading it. I’d put it down, but continue to think about the characters until I could pick it back up again. I’m still in shock that this is Ashley’s debut novel.

I love starting books blind with not a clue what it’s really about. That’s what I did with this book and I don’t regret it at all. And that’s the reason I’m keeping this review pretty vague. This book had me at the prologue. It was just enough information to really spark my interest but not enough to give anything away. I had to know what was going on.

The character were so complex and amazing. They were real and vulnerable, struggling with hard issues. This story dives deep into their lives. You will feel their pain but you’ll also feel their happiness! There’s a lot of hard topics in this book - alcoholism, suicide, and rape, but don’t let that scare you. You get to see these characters push threw these issues and the outcome is beautiful!

This book is raw, gritty and emotionally haunting! This book will give you all the feelings. I don’t cry often when reading, but this book had my tears flowing.

Thank you Ashley Dill for the eARC. All opinions are my own.

Make sure you have some reading time when you start this one. I started reading, and couldn't put it down! The characters were so well developed, and yes, you may cry with them and for them.

The setting is in middle TN, near Nashville, which I enjoyed as I have several friends who live in that area.

There are some tough topics in this book, but they are all treated in a delicate manner, nothing graphic. They are really well done, and help build the reader's empathy for anyone who may be going through any of these situations such as drug or alcohol abuse, prison, sexual abuse, or suicidal thoughts.

You'll be thinking about Hold Back the River even after you finish reading the book.

I received an advanced copy of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.

I loved this book. i was lucky to receive an ARC from the author. This review is 100% my own and I feel no obligation to inflate my rating. I did absolutely love this story! The two main characters have great depth. Their lives have been anything but easy and figuring out life day after day when you carry baggage is complicated. I also have a love/hate feeling towards stories that don’t just give it all away in the beginning. I love the mystery and hate the waiting lol. This book shares about these MCs as the story is told instead of setting the groundwork in the beginning which really adds to the development of the story and their characters. This book grabbed my attention in the first chapter and progressively got more intriguing. Part of what I loved about this book was the many emotions it brought out in me while reading and it wasn’t just a straight forward story. It got messy, it had happiness, it was real and it was a great read!!!

This book was all about second chances. And it won me over from the very start.

That Prologue was one of the best I’ve ever read. What a hook! It gives saucy snipets while remaining vague enough that you have to keep reading!

I went into this book mostly blind and I loved it that way. So I am trying to keep my thoughts vague while also telling you to read this book!

The romance was deep and abiding. It was wholesome and moved way beyond just physical attraction.

This book contains hard themes. This is NOT a rom com. But I dove deep into these characters and was invested in each of their stories. So so much.

And the Epilogue was 🥹💙

I loved it. It was really good. There was so much unfairness and out of my hands tragedy in this book. It hurt. Bad. But! I'm so extremely happy for Pat. He is that dude! I loved him for the very beginning. I was rooting so hard for him from the start. I'm so happy he is finally happy.

This is a terrible review, but if you are ready for an emotional, heartbreaking but healing ride, read this book!

I think, unfortunately, this was a little over hyped for me. I very much enjoyed it, but there were some issues too. In the end I do think this was a solid debut and I would absolutely read another book by this author.

I ADORED Patrick. I loved his soft and resilient nature and when offered a second chance, gave it the best chance he could. I loved watching him fall in love, get to connect with those around him and bury the trauma of his past.

Jules, I struggled a little more with. I understood the pain she was going through and I only wish that there had been more focus on her getting the help she needed. It’s a lot more glossed over and I was missing that bit to connect with her arc.

I enjoyed the multiple POV and the heartfelt nature of the story. At times, I didn’t know where the focus was supposed to be, there was a LOT thrown in and some small plot holes popped up as a result, but its a pull at your heartstrings story at its core that I did like.

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Romance
- Language: very little
- Romance: make-outs
- Violence: high
- Trigger/Content Warnings: drug use, loss of a loved one, giving up a baby for adoption, false -imprisonment, child abuse, suicide attempt and ideation

Hold Back the River is a story to become engulfed in. Ashley Dill plants intriguing questions in your mind and answers them through a perfectly paced narrative, carrying you through every emotion on the spectrum.

It is incredible to me how this debut work is so eloquently worded and expertly thought out. The characters are well developed, and thoughts of their stories linger long after the book ends.

This is not a rom com. There are difficult themes of lives plummeting to rock bottom (addiction, depression, suicidal thoughts, death of loved ones). But, those are balanced with beautiful themes of redemption and sacrificial love.

I highly recommend this book, and it tops my list of favorite reads in 2023! I hope Ashley Dill writes many more novels in the future.

“I love because the Father first loved me, Patrick. All our love is only an extension of His.”

————

Two separate lives and tragedies are intertwined together by the rushing waters of life…

Patrick Moore is finally coming home after spending 14 years behind bars. He must try to pick up the broken pieces of his life, completely alone.

Meanwhile, widow Julia “Jules” Collins has been given the ultimatum to go to AA or lose her job- Jules reluctantly goes and there meets Patrick who she can see has secrets of his own.

Drawn together in a wild force beyond their own, Pat and Jules are a balm to each other’s scars. But neither is fully honest about all their dark past experiences. It’s much less painful to live in the present and not be consumed with the bitter memories of their past.

But when their skeletons come tumbling out anyway, can Pat & Jules push forward towards reclaiming their future? Can they truly battle their demons once and for all and conquer their love and dreams?

Wow, this story! 🔥 Ashley Dill has truly given us two deeply flawed yet lovable and inspiring characters to root for.

What I loved about this story? The two scenes in which both characters unleash their grief at the cemetery undid me! So powerful! The dual povs, the angsty and emotional vibes, the tensions between Pat and Jules as they fight to not fall in love with each other because of their traumas and the beautiful themes of forgiveness, second chances and redemption make this book a must read! Pat, in particular is a real gem to read about. He is patient and wants Jules to know she is worth waiting for.

This isn’t a book that skims the surface of real life issues so therefore we have a story that breaks your heart and allows us to feel those messy, complex and fragile feelings that help us to better understand the issues the characters are dealing with. The author writes about extremely difficult subjects but with sensitivity and grace.

Possible triggers/content:

Alcoholism/drugs/addiction
Suicide
Sexual abuse/rape (not described)
Miscarriage
Death of spouse/parents
*Closed door romance/no language

I’m gonna try to put into words how wonderful this book is, but I know I won’t do it justice. You just need to read it, but here’s my measly attempt…

If you want happy-go-lucky, life-is-perfect type of read, this isn’t for you. This is a story about real people with real life issues and real life emotions. It makes you ache, but in the best sort of way. I joke (sort of) by saying you need a bounty quicker picker upper when you read it cause a plain ole tissue won’t do. It made me cry so much, have chills all over my body more times than I can count, and I still think about Pat and Jules like they are real people. Honestly, it kinda pisses me off that they aren’t.

Hold Back the River is a story of loss, grief, regret, redemption, forgiveness, and hope. It’s the type of story that sticks with you and makes you want to be a better person. It inspires you to love deeper, forgive faster, and be where your feet are.

The fact that this is Ashley’s debut novel is so insane! Reading this didn’t feel like a newborn author wrote it. It felt like a wise old man type of author purposefully toyed with your emotions and intentionally made you feel the deepest of things. To put it plainly, Ashley put her heart on the page and when you read Hold Back the River, you FEEL that. It doesn’t feel phony, cliche, forced. It feels real and raw.

This isn’t a light read as far as subject matter but it’s very clean, which I loved. The love story is so sweet and deep without being raunchy. There are heavy issues such as suicide, sexual exploitation, drugs, etc mentioned in this novel, but it doesn’t go into great detail.

Overall, best book of the year for me and I’m guessing it would be for you as well. It’s coming to the public August 7th so add it to your list people.

I received an advanced reader copy of Hold Back the River. These thoughts are all my own.

I recently had the privilege of reading an ARC of Hold Back the River by debut author Ashley Dill, and let me tell you, I was utterly blown away!!! The grip this novel had on my heart was wildly intense as Ashley took me on a journey into the depths of sorrow and heart wrenching healing.

Hold Back the River is the tender love story of two unlikely souls who find each other in the midst of deep pain and mutual brokenness. I’ll be honest, this book does not hold back when it comes to exposing raw emotion in the face of difficult subject matter. Ashley wasn’t afraid to explore themes of abuse, suicide, drug use, and the searing loss of loved ones within the lives of her characters. I often found myself sobbing alongside Pat and Jules as I watched them wade through the deep waters of grief, knowing full well that healing and redemption would come in due time… and when that time came, my goodness was it achingly beautiful!

Five glowing stars!!! Absolutely READ this book!

Wow! This book! What a ride! I’m so happy i decided to take a chance and read this debut novel by a new author. Her writing is stunning. I was immediately mesmerized with this story.

What a beautiful story of love, loss, guilt, and forgiveness, especially forgiving one’s self. The main characters in this story went through so much. They were floundering and only together were they able to heal.

I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but if you want to be swept up and feel all the emotions by immersing yourself in a story I highly recommend that you read this book!

Trigger warnings:
Suicidal ideation
Drinking and Drug Use
Sexual Abuse
But please don’t let that deter you from reading this story it’s not graphic, just there to help you understand the character’s experience and state of mind.

“I was afraid if I told you all this, you’d start loving me like I was broken. I didn’t want that because your the only person who has ever made me feel whole.”

While this quote makes this book feel like a romance novel it is so much more. It’s a story with deep emotion that deals with past traumas, learning to trust yourself and learning to let someone else be a part of your story.

Once this story got started I could not put it down. It was such an emotional ride and I found myself fully invested in the characters. I still find myself thinking about their story and I hope to see a sequel in the future.

Ashley writes in a way that reminds me of Jodi Picoult. You’ll think about this book long after you finish it.

I did receive this book as an Advanced Reader Copy but all of the thoughts in this review is my own. (Debuts Aug. 7th).

I went into this blind without reading the synopsis which made the book that much more enjoyable watching the story unfold.

As I was reading I couldn’t help feeling like I was reading a book along the feels of “where the crawdads sing.” I was very impressed by the style and character development as this is a new author. I honestly was shocked to learn as I was reading it.

If you like books by authors like Amy Harmon and/or stories that deal with real life issues in a delicate way, then don’t hesitate to grab this book!

From start to finish this book was heartbreakingly beautiful. So full of heart & pain but hope & love I couldn’t put it down!

Patrick was everything you’d want in a MMC & more i mean good lord everything he said was perfect & I loved his POV!

Jules took a lil more for me to warm up to her but in the end I loved her just as much!

The romance is just absolutely beautiful & perfect for those who enjoy some heat but no spice!

This story isn’t for the faint of heart though.

There are definitely a lots of triggers like depression, suicide, physical abuse, drug abuse, alcoholism, rape (not depicted but mentioned) & just straight up pain! Though I found through all this sorrow, the story is just so heartwarming and beautiful & I can’t recommend this book enough!

Quote: “My heart feels like it’s going to explode. There is no way to fight the uncommon love which knits our family together. It was destined from the beginning. All our paths a winding road, joining here. Pat once said trying to change things was as impossible as trying to change the course of the Mississippi. It couldn’t be done. I yield myself fully to him, thankful for the river.”

This was a fantastic debut book. I truly forgot at times that it was a debut because it is so well written. Ashley did a great job of scene setting the area of Middle Tennessee and writing in a southern setting in general without cringy accents and unrealistic southern dialogue. She also created good suspense and mystery to keep the reader guessing but without dragging it on too long.

Patrick and Julia are both great characters with so much depth and I loved the immediate attraction but believable pace of their relationship. They both had significant trauma to work through (some past and some present) and I liked the beauty of friends not letting a friend give up. This book is not a light read, dealing with some really tough subjects but it is a beautiful story of beauty coming from ashes, redemption and choosing to move forward into the future beyond trauma.

There were just a couple plot points that kept this from being a 5 star read for me but overall I enjoyed it immensely and definitely recommend it to readers that want a sweet/ closed door contemporary romance that isn’t a Romcom.

I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This story!

It's all the depth and realness that I crave.

It's deliciously flawed characters and second chances.

It has so many solid storylines woven into one captivatingly thick plot.

It's heavy in all the best ways.

It's emotional; it made me cry (also in the best way).

It's a beautiful display of what it means to be human. So human.

It realistically addresses the psychology of overcoming trauma and the challenge of moving through it.

And, my favorite...
It talks about the very real feelings of questioning if we are actually deserving of love and the magic that can happen when someone offers it anyway.

Ashley Dill absolutely blew this debut novel out of the water! Her writing is stunning, and her storytelling is impressive. The way the story unfolded bit by bit was addictive. I look forward to reading more of her work.

Thank you for generously gifting me an advanced copy of this book. I sincerely loved the story. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What an emotional, many layered read. I was warned that this was a tear jerker going in, and boy was it. This is a story of so much love, hurt, and redemption. The characters are realistic, raw, and their stories and backgrounds unfold slowly, keeping you wanting more. I loved Patrick from the very beginning and I loved how deeply Jules and he loved—and saved each other.

In lieu of my normal “list”, I’ll just say that I also loved Mama Shaye so much and share a couple more of my favorite excerpts:

“I’m here to talk if you need someone, but I’m not going to demand any answers from you.”

“I love because the Father first loved me, Patrick. All our love is only an extension of His.”

“Pat was a true romantic. Not like chocolate and presents and gimmicky stuff. He stopped and smelled the flowers in life, gazed at the stars, and held me as if he may not get another chance. He lived disconnected from technology and soaked in the moments. He lived life like every second was a gift and took me on the journey with him.”

“‘You won’t understand.’ ‘Help me then. I want to understand you.’”

The characters’ paths of grief and healing were just so realistic, and I appreciated the dynamic of their loved ones navigating the best ways to help them as well. The ending was just perfect and warmed my heart in all the best ways. I would have never guessed this was a debut novel had I not known going into it.

Alright my friends. If you are looking for a clean love story with so many emotions, this is it! I laughed, ugly cried, rooted for the underdog, and experienced an emotional cleanse. Although I finished it weeks ago, I am still thinking about it!

Patrick Moore is a quiet, unassuming friend. And a felon. The last 14 years in prison have been excruciating: what happened to his high school sweetheart? She stopped writing more than 10 years ago. They had promised to love one another forever. Does that still apply to now?

Julia Collins is running away from everything. Especially memories. Ok fine, technically she goes to work and has friends, but that doesn’t stop her from being reckless with her decisions and her life. Alcohol and extreme sports can’t be that bad of a combination.

When Patrick gets released and moves into the same apartment complex, it’s only a matter of time before their paths cross.

Read this book if you like:

☀️ Protective “Older” Brothers
☀️ Multi POV
☀️ Processing Life Evets
☀️ Finding Joy in Life

Content/Triggers: This book is 100% clean, but it is by no means a romcom. The story is beautiful and emotional, however it does depict multiple characters overcoming trauma (abuse, sexual abuse, alcoholism, DUI, suicide, illegal substances). Although these are heavy and hard topics, they are depicted sensitively and beautifully. The book is also full of heart, loyalty, encouragement, second chances, and becoming who you want to be.

“Your blue is my new favorite shade.”

“Smother me.”

I have so many thoughts swimming around my brain right now. This book is full of emotions, and I rode every single one. As the wife of a recovering alcoholic, I felt the pain and heartache. My emotions were all over the place.

And I just cannot believe this was a debut!

There were a few issues that I had with the ending, but I don't want to give anything away, but that's why it isn't a 5 star for me.

It’s difficult to adequately express just how good this book is. It’s a novel of quiet beauty and depth; both heartbreaking and heartwarming. An exquisitely told story of love, loss, brokenness, healing, and second chances.

The main male character, Patrick Moore, is now one of my favorite literary heroes. He loves deeply, completely, and intensely, and I loved his heart of gold.

This beautiful debut novel is one that will stay with me for a long time. I loved everything about it, and highly recommend it!

This book has been on my list to read for a while because of all the rave reviews, so I was excited to read it. The prologue hooked me right away and the story definitely had promise. I wanted to love it so bad! Unfortunately there were several plot points that did not work for me. I feel like there was way too much trauma in these characters lives and maybe some of it should have been simplified so there wasn’t so much going on with the story. I also struggled with the FMC—she was pretty immature and I felt like she never got the help she clearly needed to deal with everything. Overall this book just wasn’t for me, but I know lots of other people loved it, so maybe take my review with a grain of salt.

Ok I really loved this book! Maybe I was just in the mood and it hit just right — but I’m giving it 5 stars! First of all, it was set in middle Tennessee which was so fun since that’s where I live! There is so much pain and suffering for the main characters in this book— it truly broke my heart, but it didn’t end up being depressing. You realize that the strength of love is more powerful and able to heal all wounds. There is serious heartache but also selfless love, courage for second chances, beautiful faith, and hope for the future!! Loved it so much!!! There are some heavy themes— drugs/ alcohol/sexual abuse/ suicide/adoption/ —- but It is not detailed. It is actually clean — no sex or bad language!! I really appreciated that! There are some really emotional parts but I loved the characters so much that I didn’t mind the dramatics. I found myself tearing up in parts, and grinning ear to ear in others, as I cheered them on! My heart was truly touched!!

OVERALL STAR RATING: 4/5
CLEAN RATING: 5/5

Well, it’s officially been determined (by me LOL) that Ashley Dill is an INCREDIBLY gifted writer. After reading and falling in love with We Redeemed the Rain, I knew I had to pick up another book from her asap. Hold Back the River was her debut novel. You’re immediately intrigued by the first couple of chapters, and she plunges deep into the layers of trauma within the characters.

Patrick Moore has spent 14 years in prison and the beginning of this book follows his release and his struggles, trying to adjust and acclimate to society again. He’s desperate to live a life of normalcy. So much has changed over 14 years. There are no friends or family waiting to welcome him home with open arms. I loved Ashley’s attention to detail in little things such as Patrick needing to get a new cell phone and having never even experienced the usage of a smart phone before because they didn’t exist back when he was tossed into prison. Everything, big and small is an adjustment for him. He needs to hold onto hope…and he’s desperate for companionship in some form.

Julia Collins is also living a life full of chaos and trauma. She’s been heavily leaning on alcohol and is an absolute die-hard adrenaline seeker when it comes to extreme sports and adventure. There is honestly no level of danger she’s afraid to tackle. One would say she has a death wish. And truthfully, perhaps she does.

Julia and Patrick meet at an AA meeting. They form a bond that both so desperately need. A true friendship, love and appreciation for each other, but how far can their relationship go when each is harboring endless dark secrets about their pasts?

If you’re a fan of gritty, gut-wrenching and redemptive stories, this one is for you!

Triggers Warnings: Abuse, suicide, drugs, alcohol…this book covers it all. I do believe there were maybe two instances of the word h*ll being used, but otherwise free of language or spice.

Not perfect but overall, a lovely book.

I adore a book that focuses on a male perspective and does it well. Pat’s story was a mixture of intense hurt and healing. His journey touched me deeply and Ashley gave this tender man a voice. In our world, men aren't given enough grace or understanding so his character was special to me.

I was impressed how Ashley incorporated an unpopular trope with an effortless flow.

The romance was touching and instead of having the regular "savior" in the relationship, its a story of mutual saving grace. There's a gentle vein of faith that religious readers will appreciate and everyone else will find fitting for the characters.

the writing style was lovely and has a great deal of potential for future books.

THOUGHTS:
While some of the heavy topics were respectfully done, most felt unnecessary and had little to no proper closure. I applaud Ashley for addressing so many difficult subjects but In the end, the trauma was overly saturated and incomplete.

Jules was a complicated character that I never loved. While It wasn’t necessary for me to care about her, I desperately wanted to understand her. More development would have changed my experience from annoyance and confusion to sympathy and compassion. As well as enhance the love story throughout.

**There were a few plot choices I didn’t find realistic and i had some unanswered questions, but i let those things go and they did not affect my rating.**

OVERALL:
A wonderful book for the right audience. I can see why people have been loving it, and while (for me) It wasn’t perfection, I finished it with satisfaction and respect for this debut author.

My Thoughts:
I've had this on my Kindle for over a year, and decided it was time to give it a try. I have seen lots of love for this author, so I know my review is an unpopular opinion. I also went in blind and had no idea the amount of trauma I was in store for when starting this.
Patrick was a likable MMC. His behavior in the first half made sense to me, considering what he had been through, and I was glad to see him take his second chance at life and try to make the best of it.
Julia was just okay for me. Her actions made sense most of the time, except for when Pat revealed his past. She just accepted it so easily and didn't take any time to process the bombshells he dropped. I also didn't love the interactions between her brother and Pat.
The first half was probably a 4 star, but the second half really started to lose me. I just felt like there was so much trauma, without anyone trying to get professional help or thinking about how it could cause problems in the future. I did like the addition of Sunny's character, but I also felt like I had to suspend disbelief when it came to that whole storyline.
Maybe I'm nitpicking too much, but in the end it just didn't hit me the way the author intended. I applaud the author for taking on such heavy topics, and I'd consider trying another one of her books if I find myself in the mood for an emotional read.

Great story, needs some polishing

I really enjoyed this story. It's heavy, but also sweet and hopeful. There's a lot of trauma and yet the author does a great job weaving the story in such a way that it's not overbearing. I liked the characters. I liked the friendships. I thought the romance was really heartfelt.
There are several edit errors in this story. There are also a few plot gaps...what did the mom do that created a situation with so much money? That wasn't really clear with Patrick. Also, this is silly, but Patrick completely misses a flight and drives a rental one-way. Anyone that's driven a rental one-way knows the expense that comes with that but it's not even addressed. And lastly, Jules needs some therapy, but that's never fully addressed. It is for Pat, but not for Jules. Even with those issues, I still appreciated book. Ashley Dill, keep up the writing!!

Content: Drug abuse, addiction, physical abuse, prison, abandonment, depression, attempted suicide, pregnancy loss, and foster care could all be triggers. I really appreciated that there's nothing graphic or detailed in this book.
Language: No language
Religious: Some small religious moments based on specific characters but this isn't a religious story

Happy reading!!

I went into this book completely blind with only the knowledge that my friend Summer—who has great taste in books—loved it.

This is a heavy read, you’re following two very broken characters but man is it hopeful! I loved the way these characters were able to help eachother grow and heal from respective traumas. There were so many moments where I had to pause and reflect because passages just had me closing my eyes putting my hand to my chest.

I really loved the way the story was told with an air of mystery. The characters reveal their story slowly and deliberately, the little mysteries each character holds is revealed just exactly when it should be and it was just so beautifully done.

I adored this emotional, beautifully written story and I’m so excited to read The Blooms that Broke Us, and see what’s next for the characters in this beautiful world!
