Ah, winter in South Dakota….

Naomi Witherspoon, chosen by a Lakota Indian goddess to mediate a truce in heaven, is in the midst of a number of down-to-earth problems. She hasn’t heard from her boyfriend, Joseph, in weeks. She has also been attacked recently by a man channeling an Aztec jaguar god. Her best friend Shannon thinks she ought to get out of town for awhile – but what Shannon proposes is a road trip to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to track down Naomi’s father, who doesn’t know she exists. Naomi agrees to go, but the additional stress literally makes her sick.

Their search is complicated by a surly teenager; a mysterious walled compound that may or may not belong to Loki, the Norse Trickster; and a blizzard or two. And why, to top it off, is Naomi dreaming of a wolf? As she tells Shannon, the way the woo-woo usually works, she figures the two of them are about to find out.

Good

I am truly enjoying this series. The combination of Native American lore and avatars of various other pantheon is an intriguing premise.

Book Info: Genre: Fantasy/Magical Realism
Reading Level: Adult
Recommended for: people who enjoy alternate spirituality, Native American mythology, good stories

My Thoughts: Oh, wow, this is the best one yet! In addition to the Native American deities, and the Norse deities, now we've met a few Celtic deities! Very cool. We also visit South Dakota in the winter, which is a pretty bleak place, but beautiful in its own way. The Badlands of South Dakota are something to see. My dad rode in a “rough trail” horse race there one year, and I remember how lovely it was.

I can't really go into why I loved this book so much without providing spoilers. Hopefully people who know me will understand once they read it. All I can say is that the big discovery at the end had me laughing and cheering out loud.

I loved meeting the group in South Dakota. What a great bunch of people! I hope we'll go back there before the series ends. I'm pretty psyched up to read the next book in the series now, so I'll leave it at that. My recommendations for who will enjoy the book remains the same as in previous reviews. I really do highly recommend these books.

Synopsis: Ah, winter in South Dakota…

Naomi’s caught some kind of bug, and she hasn’t seen Joseph in weeks. But she lets Shannon drag her on vacation: a road trip to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to find Naomi’s father. There, they find more than they bargained for: a dream wolf, a mysterious walled compound that might or might not belong to Loki, and a lot of snow.

Shannon certainly knows how to show a friend a good time…

I am inexplicably drawn to Native American stories and wolves. This story has both and so much more. As we join Shannon and Naomi on a working vacation, we are educated about the Pine Ridge Reservation, the battle at Wounded Knee, and how the wolf works in the Lakota tradition. I thought it all blended well as Naomi starts to feel connected to her own Native American roots. It is a heartwarming journey as she gets to know her extended family and we get to see into the process of her new mediating vocation as it is implemented into the judicial system on the reservation. She is excellent at her job, the Goddess has chosen well.

The plot takes a not so surprising turn into Celtic mythos; we were told Shannon was part fae in Seized. She is now taking on a larger role in the whole scheme as the confrontation with Jehovah draws closer. I love the way all belief systems are being blended together in this series, we are all one. I also liked the fact that George, Joseph’s friend, has now been drawn more into the story. It will be interesting to see if he takes on a larger role or if he is, as he seems, just a friend.

Jack, what can I say about Jack except that he is a tool? He needs to be watched and monitored constantly; he is not free of his demon yet. However, he does seem to have a conscience, every now and then, so perhaps there may be hope for him. There is exciting news announced in this installment and a turn at the end of this story that will hook you for the next book.

This book contains adult language and situations that may be offensive to some.
Excellent editing, I found no issues with editing or formatting.

Book Three of the Pipe Woman Chronicles, Tapped by Lynne Cantwell is yet another suspenseful ride into the complete unknown. As the twists kept me guessing I continued to get more and more involved in Naomi's thrilling tale. Her adventures had me thinking about the mystery that this story held even when I was not reading.

The author has a way of pulling her reader in, bit by bit and layer by layer. This series is a great time investment and a perfect escape. Kept me curious all the way through, filing my thoughts with these unusual turn of events. Powerfully moving and wildly gripping, I stayed glued to the pages and went from the first book right to the next without taking a break.

In this story, Tapped I was reading looking for answers. Would Naomi with the help of her devoted friend Shannon be able to find the father she had never met? The suspense had me reading with a vengeance.

Quote ~

We had discovered the trick by accident, early on in the relationship. At first, I had to be asleep, with my woo-woo defenses totally down, to manage it; as trust grew between us, it became easier to ride along in his head when he was shifted. It had proven useful a number of times - but this might have been the first time he insisted on it because he wanted to keep me safe.

I am becoming a big fan of Lynne Cantwell. 'Tapped' is part of a series of five novellas ('the Pipewoman Chronicles') all dealing with Native American gods and ways. They also incorporate other pantheons and bring them all together, including Jehovah, in a kind of mega-Senate to discuss what's going wrong with the world and how to solve it. Bringing this to pass is given to a small reluctant team of humans, led by Naomi Witherspoon, who endure considerable hardships before finally enabling the meeting to happen. Their problems are unusual and come thick and fast. The prose slips along easily, not a word is wasted. I enjoyed this whole series immensely. I've also read the two books in which Naomi and Joseph Curtis's daughter has to take her turn at saving the world (this isn't a spoiler - honest: it's how she does it that keeps the books galloping forward). And now I've embarked on yet a third series of Cantwell's ('Land, Sea, Sky') which carries on, with a different protagonist (Tess Showalter this time) from where Naomi and Joseph's story left off. They're easy reading books good for bedtime. Although I find them intriguing and pacy enough that quite often that few minutes reading in bed becomes an hour or more!

I really like the topic of this book, Tapped by Lynne Cantwell. Though this is book 3 of a series youcan easily pick up the story line. Naomi is a lawyer and recently found out from her mother, she's part Lakota Indian. White Buffalo Half Pipe Woman is a major goddess who chooses Naomi to be the negotiator between the gods and Jehovah, the white mans god. White Buffalo Half pipe Woman gives amy the gift of pushing/compulsionto help her meditste better. She gives Naomi's friend Shannon the gift of empathy, which helps her in her job as a social worker. They go to the Indian Reservation, where Naomi hopes to meet her dad, Drew. She first meets her cousin Margie the her Aunt Hannah and Uncle Thom. Next Naomi discovers she's pregnant by ajoseph Curtis. This book details a very discriptive story, especially about life on the reservationand the interaction of all the various gods. It's a nice tail of tribal lure and history.

Things are becoming interesting for Naomi and her group of friends. Joseph and her are arguing and he has run off to be more animal than human for a while, and Naomi gets to go find her father with Shannon.

Along the way Naomi learns a lot about her heritage and some interesting news and Jack is around causing problems as well. Someone has drained the aquifer and has built a giant wall to keep everyone out! I wonder who could be doing all these bad things???? I know! I know! (as I wildy raise my hand). Oh wait I can't tell you because that would spoil the whole story... darn!

Guess you will have to read this wonderful book to find out what happens. I loved all three books in this series and am anxiously awaiting books four and five.

Because I am reading this book in the omnibus edition, and using text-to-speech, I found they didn't know. When I got to tapped that I was reading a book number three. But once I discovered I was no longer in book number two, and I realized that the story had picked up, I knew I was well into the number three. And the story does pick up quite a bit in this book.

I'm having a hard time reviewing these in between books, because I'm seeing it as a whole series. And I'm loving it. And sad to know that I'm nearly at the end.

The only reason I'm reviewing these in between books is I do own these separately that it adds to my reading goal on GoodReads. My goal is 200 books for this year And I've read 192. :-) Yay me!
