"Add a drop over lavender to your bath, and soon, you'll soak yourself calm!" If you know where that reference is from, you've lived a good life!

(The Little Book of Calm)
(Paul Wilson)
PRETEND YOU'RE HUMAN
Leave it to others to be perfect, to be wonderful. Be content with what you are.
PAINT THE TOWN GREEN
Keep plants where you work, sleep and live, and you'll enjoy more oxygen.

DO NOT EAT
January 17, 2015
I keep this little book on my table at my workplace. It makes us all laugh a lot, which probably wasn't author's real goal but still is very helpful in fighting our everyday stress.

Let's face it: I did not take this one seriously. I bought it for a friend and well...why not reading it before giving it away?
I couldn't help but giggle all the way through it. Yes, I am totally connecting this with Black Books. Who doesn't? And for the laugh this little bugger gets the four stars.

Leave town with an orange and pretend you are laughing at it

My favourite piece of advice this book offers: Wear Donald Duck underpants. Four stars for being funny, intended or not. Oh, and it's way too big to swallow.

I love having this little book in my purse. I can reach for a little bit of calm whenever I need it. Some suggestions seem obvious, some not so obvious...but when your brain is in panic mode, nothing is obvious! A great tool for getting me back in to alignment.
Because sometimes, you want to do something a little more jazzy than deep breathing. ;)

After watching the Black Books I found this by serendipity in an Op Shop for $1!
However, I will never be able to take it seriously. Sorry Paul Wilson!

Thanks for this Dean!
Why would anyone in their right mind rate this five stars... Just watch the brilliant Black Books and try not to laugh too hard.

After this book played a vital role in the TV show Black Books, I felt compelled to read it. It's quite a cute little book but I found the tips it offered to be fairly useless. Nonetheless, it's an entertaining read, if only because of the place it has taken in popular culture.

To be calm, have you tried just not worrying about things?! Other favourite suggestions were to massage your eyebrows, laugh at nothing, and 'pretend to be human'. Found this little book amongst my sister's things and read it for a laugh, cynical as I am, and to see if it was the same one from Black Books (it's not, alas). But to be fair, it wasn't nearly as ridiculous as expected. More calming than not reading it would have been. So... Cheers, Paul? x

“When you rest, you are a king surveying your estate. Look at the woodland, the peacocks on the lawn. Be the king of your own calm kingdom”
At first I found this book a little difficult to swallow, but it quickly assimilated itself into my life and now I cant live without it! This is a perfect book for all those in need of a little calm in their life.

I actually like this wee book. It calms me down. And thank you to the reviewers here on Goodreads who mentioned this book's connection to the British TV series "Black Books" which I'd never heard of. I bought Season 1 on Amazon and it made me laugh. "Be the king of your own calm kingdom." Indeed!

This is a sweet little book, with some nice tips in it. Good to carry about, and I'm one of those people who really does need to stay calm...

I just had to buy this book after watching the British television series 'Black Books'. When I need to cheer up or have a laugh I read this book.

Perfect daily meditation 👌

All of these stars are solely for the fact this book was on Black Books! I didn’t really expect any sage wisdom from the book as that wasn’t the reason I bought it. I did read it but I’m not really into this sort of thing so it really didn’t give me a sense of calm. For someone who likes this type of book perhaps it will actually help.

Anxiety is a normal part of life. The goal is to stop feeding it, become more tolerant of uncomfortable feelings, and act effectively even while anxious.
When anxious, ask: “What do I actually know?” Catastrophizing turns possibilities into assumed disasters. Stick to facts rather than imagined futures.
Stop fighting the fact that you feel anxious.
Don’t wait until you're unafraid to act. Fear decreases as you confront it.
For something bothering you, determine whether you can change it. If you genuinely cannot, work on accepting reality. If you cannot accept it and have the ability to leave the situation, consider leaving
Slow your body when your mind accelerates.
Get thoughts out of your head.
Stop spending enormous mental energy trying to control other people's opinions, the past, uncertainty, or circumstances you cannot alter. Put that energy into your “zone of control”: your decisions, preparation, conversations, habits, and next action.
Protect sleep.
negative people can keep your nervous system activated.
Ask: “What is the thing I don't want to deal with?” Fixing that may reduce a surprising amount of background anxiety.
Have at least one ally who knows when you're struggling. Relationships, helping others, generosity, and shared experiences repeatedly appear as ways of moving attention outside the anxious self.
ou can notice a thought without obeying, debating, suppressing, or believing it.
Feel anxiety → don't catastrophize it → don't avoid life because of it → take the next controllable action → allow the feeling to pass.
