The time has come for Gabriel to claim his underworld. Accompanied by the deceptive Dark One, he risks everything to find his mate and take his place as the deity Death.
Between him and the only woman he’s ever loved: a handful of rebelling death dealers, the deity Karma and the Dark One’s mate, a human-turned-demon who holds his soul in the palm of her hand.
Time is running out, and Gabriel has one chance to make things right, even if it means letting go of the last part of him that’s human.

I enjoyed the book's first half, maybe even a bit more than half, despite the agonizingly slow pacing. It was nice to see some new faces - Karma - and both Deidres working together.
The build-up was so long that I really expected a great ending, but when it finally came, it wasn't all that. Also, what happened to Darkyn and how things were resolved was not to my liking. What, the Dark One can't beat up some troll?
"Cramps are the first sign." It took her a moment to process the male's voice. Deidre straightened and squinted into the dark side of the cell. She heard chains rattle a moment before a lanky figure emerged far enough for her to see him. Tall and blond, the steely-eyed demon had fangs little longer than hers. "Of what?" she asked. "One of two things. You're either starving or spinning into bloodlust madness." He squatted, his distance from her enforced by the chains at his wrists and ankles. "My guess is starvation. You're a…new demon." "How do you know that?" His gaze swept over her. "Let's just say I know who you were." He motioned to the side of cell opposite him. She looked, noticing the jeans-clad legs for the first time. "We can eat her," he offered, licking his lips. "No," she replied with a glare. "Shame. I think a former deity would taste good. Like chicken. Or cake." "If you'd ever eaten either of those, you'd know they're too different to be compared." He shrugged. "Who are you?" "Jared. Humble servant of your mate." The demon shifted to sit on his knees and haunches. "Hungry humble servant of your mate. I was supposed to be keeping an eye on a certain death dealer and ended up getting caught." The cramps subsided. Deidre released her breath then crawled on her hands and knees to the unconscious woman whose looks were identical to hers. With hands that shook, Deidre checked the pulse of the woman who put her smack dab in the middle of Hell. "She's okay," she murmured and pushed blonde hair out of the sleeping woman's face. "Mostly bruises." Deidre felt for the trickle of magic belonging to her mate that was always present. For the first time since entering Hell, it was gone. Any connection to Darkyn was severed. "I felt the door to Hell open," Jared said. "Someone came through." Darkyn. Her breath caught. "Are you sure?" "Yeah. Probably not the boss," Jared added glumly. "Death would never let him into his realm." Not even to save me? She didn't want to know that answer. Gabriel was devoted to his duty, and she didn't think she was ready to know just how far from helping her that put him. Deidre shivered in the chilly air. "I'm hungry, too. No one will know if we eat her," Jared tried again. "She'll be a delicious chicken cupcake." "Chicken and cupcakes do not go together!" she snapped. "What do we care? We drink blood." "We're not going to eat her!" "You're blood bound. If you're not out of here in a day or two, you'll be dead. Just a sip." "That's Gabriel's mate!" "She doesn't have to know if we have a little snack while she's out."
~
Past-Death trotted after him. "I need food, Jared." He lifted a bag she hadn't noticed he carried. Blood dripped from its soaked bottom onto the stone floor. "I saved you a hand." "Human food." He gave an exasperated sigh. "What does that consist of? Wood?" "They eat a lot of bread, vegetables. Funnel cakes. I miss funnel cakes so much," she replied. "What is a funnel cake?" Past-Death debated for a moment, uncertain what it was. "It's a vegetable," she decided. "Not sure what kind of tree it grows on." "Fucking plants. How can you people eat leaves?" Jared grumbled. "We eat cooked animals, too. Never raw humans like you savages." "You just capture and put an animal in an oven?" "Sort of, yes." "How can you enjoy the taste that way?" "I've never seen the full process but it comes out good." She shrugged, admitting silently it did sound strange. "I'm sure the dealers have food here somewhere." "It would be so much easier if you'd just eat this hand." "I'm not going to eat a hand, Jared."
Just two things: I can't believe it took me so long to read this book. Seriously, I've owned this book since 2014. That is way too long, especially since the story is so good. And, I loved how it worked out for Gabe and past-Death and Darkyn and Deidre. I'm ready for more Rhyn in the next one, though. I won't bore anyone with anything else, here's some of my faves. Spoilers likely.
"Do you trust her?" Fate's question made him halt once more. There were two things Darkyn knew better than the twisted depths of his own soul: one, that he was meant to become the most powerful ruler Hell had ever known. The second: his mate was meant to rule at his side, despite being the opposite of him in every way. Deidre was his, even more so than Hell, their bond unbreakable by any force in the universe. The human with the pure heart and soft voice had started out a novelty, one he hadn't planned on keeping around. That changed the night the marking of their blood bond appeared on her, when he realized there was something he wanted more than he'd ever wanted Hell. Born into a time of chaos and after hundreds of thousands of years of unrest, he'd found something he never fathomed existed: a home. A partner. A moment of peace. The only place and time in all of the world where he didn't have to carry weapons, because there was no threat, no danger, nothing but her soft skin, sweet submission, blood of honey and the stamina of twenty demonesses. "A creature like you does not deserve to discuss her," he growled, edgy and restless.
~
Gabriel drew a calming breath, opened the door to his future-and froze in surprise. Staring back at him from the middle of the most sacred place in the underworld was a demon. "What the fuck?" "Before you-" the demon started. Gabriel had whipped out a knife and snatched the familiar demon before it finished. He slammed him into the ceiling, blade biting into the skin of the creature. "-do that." The demon squirmed. "Gabriel!" It was past-Death's voice. "Stop!" More surprises every day. Unable to explain what was going on, he went perfectly still, ready to snap the demon's neck or release him, depending on how well he understood the explanation that came next. "We're helping each other escape," his mate said. "He got us out of the dungeon. I promised him neither you nor I would hurt him. So put him down." Her cool command had no effect on him this time. "Are you hurt?" he asked her without releasing the demon. "Are you saying this under duress?" "No, Gabriel," past-Death sighed. "He's like my pet…sorta. Smelly, disgusting and always hungry but basically harmless. Release him. Please." "I know this demon," Gabriel said, peering more closely at the blond creature. "You've alternately helped then betrayed then helped Rhyn." "Yes," the demon hissed. "Friendly pet." Gabriel lowered him from the ceiling, struggling to digest how he'd entered the most sacred place in the underworld only to find a fucking demon there ahead of him. He ventured a glance at his mate, and his gaze stuck, the way it always had whenever he saw her. Beautiful, if tired, deity-Deidre's large eyes were the purest blue, her wispy blonde hair swept back and tied at the base of her neck. She was pale enough to be a ghost, and her clothing was rumpled and bloodied. His protective instinct prodded him, and he found the resentment he normally experienced whenever they saw one another slipping away at the sight of her state. The pulse of their bond simmered between them for a split second, his attraction to her as strong now as it had been when he first fell for her so long ago. He wanted to sweep her up in his arms, make love to her until the sad look on her face disappeared, and then conquer his world with her at his side. We aren't ready for that. Frustration of a different kind left him more wired, but he restrained the urge to touch his mate, to feel her warm skin and hold her while gazing into her eyes. "Hey," he said. "Hey," she answered with a small, shy smile. "Hey,"the demon said. Gabriel eyed him and strode to the door, tossing him out. He closed the door behind him.
~
She looked at him, a little too long, and Gabriel lifted his eyes to hers. "It kills me to see you sad," he said, softening. "It's deserved." He took her hand and squeezed it. "I don't think it's as bad as you think." Past-Death arched an eyebrow at him. "Aside from losing your soul and the underworld being ready to implode, I think things between us are better than they've been," he said with a touch of his dark humor. "That's awful, Gabriel." Her features skewed, as if she wasn't certain whether she wanted to cry or laugh. "There are no more secrets." "No, there aren't," she agreed. "Why did it take the world crashing down around us for us to really see each other?" "Because you're the most stubborn fucking person in the universe." This time, she did laugh. Gabriel gazed at her, the thrum of his mating bond to her strong and sure. He always struggled to keep the distance he thought was warranted between them, aware that trusting her was how he normally ended up fucked up. Her laugh melted the iciness around his heart, made him yearn to take a chance on the partner he believed her capable of being. Human-Deidre had called them both selfish, and he realized how true it was. Obsessed with one another, he and past-Death both had blinders on when it came to dealing with anything that got between them. "Are we still dysfunctional?" past-Death asked somewhat sadly. "A little, yeah." "Did you ever think maybe that's the way we're supposed to be?" Gabriel chuckled. "As long as we can trust one another, I don't care what shade of dysfunction we are."
~
Lost in the bloodlust, she didn't stop, until someone snatched her out of the blood-fueled trance. Jarred back to her senses, Deidre blinked and tried to pull away, looking up into the eyes of the one creature able to stop her. The Dark One was a head taller than her, lean in the way of a warrior, with eyes that appeared to be sinkholes at night. A low growl emanated from his chest, while his direct stare sank into her mind. His body sucked up the excess magic, freeing her from its hold. His scent, warmth and the nearness of his strong frame brought her back from the blood-infused haze, made her body tremble once more as it recalled how weak she was. The scent of his blood intoxicated her, the compelling need to taste her bloodmate making her stomach cramp and her heart flutter in her throat. But it was the ferocity of the bloodlust in his eyes, coupled with the way the Dark One was always a little more terrifying during the dark of night, that made Deidre hesitate to touch him or pull away from his grip. "You came for me," she whispered breathlessly. "You're my blood monkey," he replied. "That's it?" she asked, disappointed. He pulled her roughly into his hard body, his fangs lengthening the way they did when he was preparing to feed. "I surrendered my power at the gates of the underworld, and I haven't eaten or fucked in three days. What do you think, blood monkey?" Deidre hid a smile. "I think this just might work out, Darkyn." The hunger pains return stronger, and she gasped, clutching at his bloodied shirt and pushing her face against his warm chest. The scent of his blood was strong. "You're hurt," she murmured, disturbed. "I like the pain," he reminded her. "Can't you heal?" "Hush," he ordered quietly and pressed a thumb to her lips. His rich taste was like a drop of heaven. It soothed her in a way nothing else ever had. The world outside of them was forgotten for a split second, and she rested her head on his shoulder, wanting to weep and drink, to lose herself in his blood, scent and body. "Now drink, love," he told her.
Loved this soo much after the wait it was better than I hoped! I can't wait for more of Darkyn and Dierdre! They are my favorite couple I guess even the devil deserves someone to love.
We begin the Underworld with Gabriel, Rhyn and Darkyn returning to Death's domain looking for Harmony the death dealer who kidnapped Deidre (Darkyn's mate) and past-Death Deidre.
Gabriel needs to set things right in his Underworld before he can save his mate. His journey to the palace is not an easy one and he finds out soon enough that his world needs him. Will he find past-Death? Will he finally accept what he has been fighting? Will Gabriel forgive past-death?
Darkyn needs to find his mate Deidre before blood lust takes his newly formed mate. She will die if he doesn't. Will Darkynmake it to her in time?
You will also meet a new deity in this book and learn of some new ones.
" I saw you lunch meat" sound familiar? it will if you read the first three books. Who is this demon Jarred? Why does he seem to just pop up randomly?
Andre "Ancient" expert demon hunter the half brother of Rhyn. He is also known as the "peacemaker" I am so curious about this guy. When anyone is around him they feel calm and peace. Who is he? Why is he here now?
The wait was worth it. Thank you Lizzy Ford for sharing this world with us. I look forward to more, hopefully a lot more. Wouldn't mind more Darkyn either.
Review by Ann Marie from Wicked Women Book Blog - Book 4 in the Rhyn Eternal Series.
"Change doesn't mean losing who you are."

For being the Dark One and not having any feelings he sure is angry his woman his missing, "my mate is newly blood bound. She will weaken quickly," growled the Dark One. "She doesn't have more than three days." Gabriel I missed him and I think the boy is coming around to his woman as well, "that's...good," he managed. She went to sheathe the blade and dropped it, point down, on the floor. "Oh, gods, woman, be careful with that s***," he grumbled." I love how Darkyn shows his affection, "he pulled her roughly into his hard body, and his fangs lengthening the way they did when he was preparing to feed. "I surrendered my power at the gates of the underworld, and I haven't eaten or effed in three days. What do you think, blood monkey?" He's also one that likes to think he's still the bossman when really his woman holds his balls, "he raised an eyebrow. "As long as you know there will be many, many heirs." He bit her again. "As many as there are stars, because I plan to eff you every time I see you." I can't wait to see what's next.
These books aren't the most amazing series out there...and by that I compare to "Daughter of Smoke and Bone", or the immortal instruments series, but they are an awesome read of Gods, Goddesses, and Deities.a world where humans get caught up in the games that Death, Fate, the Dark One, Peace, and Karma play, and as deities get introduced the story grows. There is family deceptions, love, hate, torture and death...it's definitely kept my interest over the last few years, and I'm excited for the next one to come out!
I started the Rhyn Eternal series on Wattpad and loved it so much I continued it past the free books. The Underworld was a great continuation of the series.
So excited for the next book in this series! My only hope is a lack of the relationship between Gabe and past death! I get that this was all about them but I am still not feeling the love for them after the way my girl Diedre was treated! In this book Gabe needs to fix what has gone wrong in his Underworld and to fix the damage Harmony has caused and to save his mate (he really never cares much about human Diedre) and Darkyn's mate he is going to need the help of Darkyn, Ryn & Andre! Sadly he doesn't let Darkyn bring his power into the Underworld which I get but this is going to cause an issue for human Diedre. During the course of things we meet a few new people Karma - just a scary bedtime story we tell our kids, and we know that the spirit is going to be peace and Jared the demon who helps rescue past death. I am hoping to see more and more of these newbies in the next book. We watch Deidre come into her power and we watch her take her place as the Dark One. There is only one way this can happen as we all know. But it proves the depths of Darkyn's love for his mate who he makes sure knows she is more than a "blood monkey". He trusts her he says and she tells him she loves him. This alone made me cry! In the end Gabe figures out was is wrong with his Underworld, he loves past death and he comes into his power as Death. He realizes that he was chosen for this from birth but he doesn't want to know the origins of his being "created" because he also discovers that Diedre was not born she was also "created" and if that's case who created him? Scary thought isn't it? I want to know who created him though and I think we will find out at some point time. I want to see more of our new Human Dark One she is all badass and I love it! As it ends we have Fate and his sister baby god Karma discussing the 2 new Humans in positions of great power and the role that Diedre is going to play in the coming years! Something bad is coming and the only person that Fate trusts is Diedre. She is holding a soul and nobody except fate knows who it is? I wonder how long it will be before we find out. I do know that as the story ends I am seriously disappointed in Gabe and Past Death - Diedre. They are 2 of the most selfish people I have ever come across, they are both whiny and to self-involved for my own taste. I really had hoped that they would have learned more and realized that life is not all about them. But maybe I am just biased when it comes to my love for the Dark One's. It's a very human emotion I have for a girl who is only a few years older then my daughter but is fictional. I believe she forgives to easily but in the end I feel she gets's the better end of the deal because the love she shares with Darkyn is more real and more satisfying then she could have ever hoped for. I cried when Diedre cried and I cheered when she won but I think she could have made a better deal before she gave up those 2 souls. But then again she is part human and she is the only innocent soul in hell. And even Karma likes her and I have always been a firm believer in having Karma on your side.
I devoured this book. I just couldn't wait to find out what the heck Gabriel was going to do to get back his domain, and of course, rescue the Deirdres. I figured it was going to be a bit surprising given Darkyn was with him, but have to admit, I didn't expect some of the twists this book delivered.
After returning to the Underworld, Gabe learns that more than 75% of his people betrayed him and aligned themselves with Harmony. On top of that, he still isn't able to access his magic and believes the reason for this is that he was once human, and undeserving. With Darkyn and Rhyn at his side, he will need to figure out what he needs to do to regain control of his domain, and wrest back the Underworld from Harmony while fixing his issues with past-Death. In the meantime, Deirdre and past-Death are stuck in the Underworld with a lot of Immortals that hate them, a demon who wants to eat them, a forgotten deity, and a looming deadline that could cost one of them their soul. What could go wrong?
I loved how both women grew in this book. Even when all seemed lost, they both found the strength to do what was necessary, even if it went against their ingrained need for self-preservation. Deirdre didn't want to lose her humanity, and past-Death didn't want to lose Gabriel. There was definitely a scene I could have done without, and I'm glad Deirdre met Karma who helped ease those memories. And as I told Lizzy, I cannot believe how this book ended! Did I mention that I have loved Rhyn since book 1? And I was happy to get my Rhyn fix. I wasn't expecting what happens to him at the end, nor the revelations Andre shares with him. In true Lizzy style, expect more to come with this series!
Wow, Lizzy you've done it again!! My heart has been in my mouth all the way from beginning to end. Just when I think all is going to plan you go and pull the rug from under my feet. I certainly did NOT see that twist coming. And the end? As usual you've left me hanging on and eager for more. I have to wait til July 2015 for more of my demonic fix? Waaaahh, no fair!!!
Lizzy Ford is one of my favourite P/R authors. I never need to read the blurb of her books, I just 1-click as I know I won't be disappointed. I love her style of writing and the way she brings her characters to life that you just want to keep reading and not stop. The Rhyn Trilogy & Rhyn Eternal have to be one of my favourite series EVER!!
I totally loved EVERYTHING about The Underworld - the banter and rivalry between Rhyn, Gabe & Darkyn, Dierdre coming into her own, emerging as one hell of a kick-ass female lead & her relationship with The Dark One, Past-Death coming to terms with her own past & future, one awesome edge-of-the-seat plot that keeps you guessing from beginning to the very end but mostly I got, not one, not two but THREE hotter than hell sexy demons to lust over!!!
I won't say anymore for fear of spoilers, especially for those yet to discover Rhyn and the gang. And for those who haven't met them yet then do yourself a favour and go 1-click now, starting with the first in the series Katie's Hellion.
This book does a fantastic job of picking up right where Darkyn's Mate left off. The book mostly takes place within Death's realm, Underworld. After past-Death Deidre left a mess of things with her shifty deals, Gabe is left at a loss for how to take control of his world. After being locked out of the realm, he finally manages to enter only to find that Harmony -- once a fellow co-worker for past-Death -- has control of most Death-Dealers and few are still loyal to him. As her learns to have the Underworld trust him and figure out why it's shutting him down, everyone else struggles to stay alive and find each other. With secret passageways and Death-Dealers at every turn, this riveting tale will have you glued and cheering for our favorite deities and mates.
This book was one that I just could not put down. The action and seeing how some of the loose ends were going to be completed or not kept me completely on edge. Truly to the point on not wanting to put the book down.
I think I had to charge my kindle during it as well. But no matter. Lizzy certainly knows how to make her characters grow and at times search themselves. That is never easy for any of us.
This has been a great read with a well thought out story arch introducing new ones through hinta of loose strings and ting off other ending of other story arcs. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of these books and will keep on eye out for more when they are in their sets.
It is my hope that you have enjoyed them as much as I have.
The Rhyn Eternal series is one of the best paranormal series I have read. There’s no way to read this series and not fall in love with author Lizzy Ford for creating an amazing story and her characters because well hell, they are just freaking fantastic. Lizzy has a way of even making Death look good. I loved this book; especially the back and forth between Fate, Gabriel and Darkyn. This book will have you on the edge of your seat and laughing at the same time. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series. I highly recommend this book along with any Lizzy Ford book if you are looking for a great paranormal read.
Really enjoyed it. This series gets better and better. I cannot wait to see where else this series will go. The characters grow even more. This book draws you in especially with last books cliff hanger. Not as big a cliff hanger this time but still want to know the answers to questions that popped up at the end. I also enjoyed the little peaks of other stories such as Ryan and Katie. I love that this was based on Gabriel mostly he is one of my favorites. Fast paced book, great stories, great characters, I didn't know how this was going to turn out and a couple times it scared me but it works out at least for right now. A lot of funny lines in the book as well just like the other books.
Oh, my God! Yes! Oh, my God! This is the living end! (pun intended). All of our characters that we have come to love so well are figuring themselves out. The love is working out. And then all Hell breaks loose! That's all I'm going to say. I don't want to give any spoilers away because this is such an awesome read that you've just got to read it for yourself. One of the best books I have ever read! I certainly WILL be reading more from this author! The books should be read in order. Cliffhangers at the end. Smashing conclusion! Highly recommended for mature audiences! Get it now! You won't regret it!
Lizzy Ford is everything you will want in an author and Underworld is one of the best books in this series for me. Darkyns story was epic I loved his bad dark side being in love with his mate, they are a romance of the dark kind....and beautiful! This book has such a twist to its heartfelt love that you cant help but fall with them, Lizzy Ford great job if you love the series your going to be in awe of The Underworld. I recommend this book and all of the rest this is a one of a kind Unique series told by an Epic author...
Lizzy Ford is a paranormal master. The Underworld was a pure absolute paranormal perfection. Of the Rhyn Eternal series this one was my favorite. When you have Demon, Deities, and Immortals on the brink of waging war against each other how can things go wrong. Easy throw in the pesky human woman decided to get the ball rolling on these chain of events. The Underworld was insane to read because as soon as I thought I had it figured out somebody had a new deal going. This book was just awesome and I had some really great laughs with my new found favorite Lizzy character Jared.
Once again Lizzy Ford gave us another amazing book. I am pretty sure that when we realize the switch, all of us wanted to lynch Lizzy, but after reading The Underworld I realized the why.... then entire series is about balance, finding the person that will ground you. For Darkyn that person was Deidre, and for Gabriel was Past-Death or the original Deidre. The message is so simple that it becomes complicate, for Gabriel and Darkyn was balance and to be men enough to agknowledge that without it all your powers, domains, etc mean nothing if you cannot control it.
I was anxious for this book to come out and hated the wait but it was well worth it. The Underworld picked up where the last book left off. Each of the character's relationships grew stronger and I loved the development. I enjoyed the journey that Gabriel, past-death and Deidre went on throughout the book to discover who and what they are. I was hook from page one getting pulled in with the action and suspense. I can't wait for the next book as the journey continues!
I am not great at writing perfect reviews so all I will say is I loved it. I highly recommend Lizzy as an author. I haven't come across any of her books that I would give anything less than 5 stars. I love this series so much and I like that each book goes into specific characters so you get a well rounded incite into each one of them. I you like Black Dagger Brotherhood series you will love this. Highly recommended.
The Underworld, Ryhn Eternal #4 by Lizzy Ford 5 stars
I loved how both Deidre and past-death Deidre had to learn, evolve and grow into their new roles and new lives. The each also grew a lot in how they learned to have relationships with their mates. Gabriel and Darkyn provided both humor and struggles as they learned to properly protect and love their mates. I liked the challenges they all faced, and continue to love how Lizzy wrote these characters!
So, I definitely missed the memo when this came out!!!! I re-read the entire series, beginning with the Rhyn Trilogy and then the first three Rhyn Eternal. This one? OMG! I'm not sure I can wait until July for book #5 on the Eternal series. Mr "Checkmate" may just be my favorite character, aside from Rhyn, of course!
The Underworld by Lizzy Ford is book 4 in the Ryn Eternal series. I am not sure how I managed to read this one out of order, but it was equally as thrilling as all the others. The characters are written perfectly. As the title says, this story line is based in the Underworld, so it is darker and deeper that the other books. But Ford still manages to give a chuckle and an HEA.
