Take My Hand #2

Hold on Tight

Rate this book
A figure from Dexter’s past has uprooted all the memories he has tried so desperately to bury… to forget. The terrible events of his past have been blown wide open once again, immersing him a pool of guilt deeper than he’s even experienced before.

Dexter feels powerless. The future he foolishly allowed himself to conceive is falling apart around him and there’s nothing he can do about it. But there’s one thing he can control – one thing he’s an expert at… blocking everything out. Losing all control, Dexter copes the only way he knows how – he dives so far into the well of addiction, the only thing that matters anymore is where his next fix is coming from.

Mission accomplished – there’s no one left. He’s successfully pushed everyone away. Nobody left to care about means no more guilt, right? You can’t hurt people who aren’t there…

But has he really pushed Emily as far away as he thinks he has? She’s given up everything for him – her home, her friends… her whole life. And she doesn’t regret a single thing. But can she save him from drowning, or has he finally sunk too far?

(Not suitable for under 18’s due to language, explicit sexual content and graphic descriptions of drug use)

“Addiction can’t be cured, only controlled.”

Hold On Tight starts where Take My Hand left and we are throw right into everything with no stopping.

Dexter and Emily are in the states still and are not confronted with a problem Dex never wanted to face – his father. Dex swears he is in control of his addiction. He promises that he won’t run anymore.

Emily promises Dex that she will never leave his side. They will tackle whatever problems they face, together.

Dex runs. Emily leaves. Dex falls right back into the rabbit hole. Emily hides from everyone.

The addiction that Dex faces is real and everything that happens will make you want to smack him, love him and smack him some more. Emily thought she would be able to handle Dex – but sometimes an addict needs to hit rock bottom and ask for help before anyone can help them.

“Yesterday’s history, tomorrow’s a mystery.”

This book is very written. There is lots of anger, sadness, betrayal, love and hope. Nothing is sugar coated – it’s raw and real what Dex goes through. I enjoy the writing very much – I love how Nicola is able to write the story in third person but at the same time there are points where the characters are narrating to us about what they are feeling or thinking – that truly made the story more enjoyable.

“You can’t enjoy the ride if you’re too busy obessing over your desitnation.”

Nicola Haken officially broke me to pieces with Hold On Tight. After tearing my heart to shreds, putting it back together, the book then lured me in a cosy, happy and warm safety, right before ripping my heart back out and doing a little tap dance on it. If you considered the last book heart-wrenching, better find a good therapist now. You'll need one.

The story picks up where "Take My Hand" left off - after the big bang, the fallout. Dexter is confronted with his past and his darkest moments. Not being able to handle it, to handle the changes that the meeting brings, he falls hard and deep. We watch him fall further and further until he crashes face first onto the ground. And there is nothing we can do about. To witness him slipping back into addiction and being consumed by it is so incredibly painful. The torment he feels inside is described so realistically, that it is palpable. It will shatter you, make you cry. It will break you to pieces - right along with Dexter. I like how it is not just a few scenes here and there that portray his addiction. It is basically the whole book that deals with a person going through addiction, with how the addiction changes them, how it influences their thinking, their behaviour and their feelings. It shows how hard it is to stop and how easy it is to fall back onto this false safety net. What I found also important is that the book shows how it is not just the addicted person that is effected, but friends and family are broken by the addiction as well. And the ripple effect of addiction goes further....the friends and family of the ones that are close to the addict feel the consequences as well. It was not just Dexter suffering. With him Emily and Sarah suffered. But it also took a toll on the lives of Chris or Rachel. The emotions Dexter goes through, the hate, the pain, the guilt, the shame, the self-loathing, the despair...there were moments when it really broke me. When I was sobbing like a baby. I wanted to hold on tight to him and to take his pain away. In other moments I wanted to slap some sense into him. The lies, the anger, the secrets, the aggression was brutal at times but so necessary to understand the depth of the hopelessness he found himself in. The way he pushed Emily away - it was understandable but painful to witness. We experience his downfall, his shaky steps and him standing proud and tall again.

Emily on the other hand is one of the strongest female characters I have ever read. Considering she has been sheltered all her life and is fairly naïve, going into a relationship with a recovering addict and then having him slip back into addiction in a short matter of time and still stand by him is something only true love can achieve. And Emily loves him with everything that she is. She does not allow him to push her around despite his issues. She stands up for herself while supporting him completely. During the course of his addiction she learns that she can't help him as long as he is not willing to be helped and concentrates on taking care of herself. But when he needs her, she drops everything and is there for him. She is smart and incredibly caring and loving, full of compassion and sympathy for others.

Their love is so strong, so extraordinary that I have a hard time describing it. But more often than not it made me cry and smile at the same time. Their love gives hope.

As if Dexter's addiction and the resurfacing of his dead-beat father were not enough, life is just handing out one blow after another to Dexter, Emily and Sarah. And I as a reader was shocked and surprised by all the twists to the point I felt gob-smacked. While they were shocking and unexpected they were realistic and believable. And God, did they make me scream in anger or wail like a banshee. Nicola Haken not only lets her characters go through hell and back but the reader as well. But the trip hurts so good.

The supporting characters are so much more than that. They play such a big part in the story that I got attached to them. Especially to Chris, Emily's brother. That is why certain parts of the book and then the end made me want to throw my Kindle at the wall, then get a hammer and smash it to pieces before throwing the bits into a fire.

I think it takes a lot of skill and talent to paint addiction so clearly and not to make the person that is addicted just good or just bad but to show there is so much in between. Addiction is not just black and white. Not just weakness of character. Nicola Haken manages to show that. She makes it clear that the attribute of addiction does not turn the person into someone bad. It is merely their way of coping, the only way they know how. Sometimes some experiences are so horrible, the pain so excruciating and the guilt so tormenting, that all a person can do, is try to escape. Dex chooses drugs to numb all of this, to stop feeling, to stop hurting. And risks losing everything that makes his life worth living.

But she not only writes the dark side so well. She is also incredible in writing the tender and sweet moments between the characters. When reading them it made my heart all fuzzy and warm. It made me melt a bit. And the sex scenes...oh the sex scenes. They are hot and sensual, erotic and sweet and there is just enough of them to not be too much but to add some smut. What I love is that they are not drawn out over twenty pages that end up boring me to death with five-page descriptions of nipples. No, Nicola Haken doses the smut just right.

She also manages to deliver enough happiness, so we know the main characters are finally getting a break when it comes to their relationship. It lulled me into a sense of cosy happiness. Before she destroyed the cosy feeling in a sneaky way. I am not sure I will recover any time soon. But that is what makes it a superb book.

I could go on for days and days about how great this book is, but I will just say....

5+ hope-giving, heart-breaking, breath-taking, life-altering stars and more.

***I was given An Arc in exchange for an honest review***

Let me start off with saying that I LOVED the first book in this series, Take My Hand. So I was so excited to start Hold On Tight. With the way Take My Hand ending on a bit of a cliffy, I was excited to see what was in store for Dexter and Emily. Luckily I didn’t have to wait and immersed myself into Hold On Tight.

OMG!!! I was SHATTERED while reading Hold On Tight. I hated seeing the characters, which I have invested so much of my time and love in pain. Oh jeez, Dexter, he absolutely broke my heart. I just wanted to get in the book and comfort him. I just was heartbroken for him. And when Dexter was at his lowest it was a tough scene to get through. Ms. Haken did a job on me and my emotions. I was a WRECK through most of the book. My emotions just raw and intense. I had to see if Emily and Dexter could survive this huge bump in the road.

In Take my Hand you first meet Dexter a recovering addict. He is determined to not fall into his old ways. He has moved from his hometown in Ohio, to London, England to attend college. he meets sweet naïve Emily and at first tries to stay away from her. He feels he doesn’t deserve happiness. he feels he deserves to feel pain and be punished for his past mistakes. They fall in love however that's not the end of their story.

After getting some bad news Dexter has to return home. Emily tells him she is going with him. She feels he needs her, he just wont admit it. When Dexter and Emily arrive back in the states things quickly escalate for Dexter. After the death of his mother I saw signs that Dexter was reverting. It was like watching a train wreck. Then Dexter’s dad shows up. Talk about an ASSHOLE!!! I hated his father for the way he treated Dexter and his mom. Don’t you worry though, he gets what’s coming to him.

We meet a new character named Jeff. OMG!!! I LOVED him. He is no-nonsense. He is Dexter’s therapist after he OD’s on heroin. At this point Dexter had pushed Emily away and “Aunt Sarah” told her to go back to the UK. When he OD’s Sarah calls Emily back and Emily rushes back to the states. The whole time they were separated Emily was broken. My heart broke for her. I wanted to kick Dexter’s ass for hurting her.

With Jeff, Emily, and Aunt Sarah’s help Dexter makes it through his rehab. Emily and Dexter decide its time to go back to the UK. Aunt Sarah goes with them. I don’t want to give away everything. I left several secrets a secret. You’ll just have to read it to find out. Hold on Tight is full of angst. BE PREPARED!!!

I missed Rachel, her and Emily drifted apart. These two have been so close I was surprised that this rift between them was so HUGE. Rachel really brings the comic relief that was missing from this book. I also missed Jared. I can’t wait to read the next book Lean on Me, which is about Rachel and Jared.

And the ending… HOLY HELL!!! It left me dying for more. We will get to see more of Chris, and find out his future. I am scared for Emily. I pray that Dexter can be what Emily will need. She is going to need him to be strong in the next part of this story because I expect this will crush her. 5 Amazing stars!!!

Favorite Quotes:
"And you wanna know the thing about long roads, Dex? You can't walk them alone without getting tired and falling. At some point, you're gonna need someone to carry you a bit of the way."--- Emily

““Please, baby...please stop running from me,”--- Emily

“I’m trying.” I sounded pathetic. My voice was weak and eyes began to sting. “I’m really am. I just...I’m fucked up, doll. I’m losing it. I’m losing everything.”--- Dexter

“You’re not losing anything,” she replied, sounding determined as she raised her chin to look up at me. She pressed her warm palm to the side of my cheek and stared intently, purposely into my eyes. “You’re not losing anything,” she repeated. “I won’t let you.”--- Emily

If she only knew. If she only knew I’d already thrown it all away. She was right - I’m not losing anything.
I’ve already lost it.
And the only thought more frightening than that right now, is I’m almost out of gear.--- Dexter

Nicola Haken has undoubtedly taken my breath away with both Take My Hand (Taking Chances, #1) and Hold On Tight (Taking Chances, #2). I have fallen under her spell and I am completely committed to finishing this series and any other books she releases!!! These books are raw and gritty. They’re incredibly real and oftentimes ugly. The struggles both Emily and Dexter endure make these books both beautiful and heartbreaking. I went through a roller coaster ride of emotions while facing some ugly truths about addiction and self worth. This book gives you a hard and fast reality check. It goes to show you just how easy someone can go from 0 to 100 and just how far one can be pushed before they wake up and say enough is enough. This isn't a usual love story -- though their romance is one you cling onto…tightly while hoping for the best. You won’t be sure of the outcome and I will say Nicola cleverly leaves this book in a similar fashion as Take My Hand…with your mouth open searching for the next page!

Let’s start with Emily shall we? She is undoubtedly one of the sweetest, most loving people, but she is also incredibly stubborn. She’s so wrapped up with Dexter and his problems that she fails to see her own shortcomings. She pushes everyone aside to tend to Dexter forgetting they may in fact need her as well. I understood her need to stand by her man and all, but she hid from everyone while trying to be the supportive and loving girlfriend. I didn’t actually feel the problem was that she did these things, in fact, I think it is actually what makes her human. My issue is that a lot of her issues were still unresolved. I know, I know, there will be a third book, but Emily just had a way about her that got to me. I loved how the author exposed Emily’s faults while still remaining committed to Dexter and his troubles.

Most people become so engulfed with their own lives, they often fail to recognize the problems others are experiencing. I think this is what I like about Nicola Haken’s writing. She’s raw and not afraid to speak truth. She isn’t afraid to push boundaries and is able to create a passionate and beautiful romance amid turmoil. Her characters are often incredibly flawed with real issues that affect not only them, but everyone in their lives.

Dexter, boy oh boy, did Dexter do a number on my head and my heart. I fell in love with him, but then he went and trampled all over my heart. Somehow he redeemed himself and I managed to fall in love all over again…FYI – I forgive you for the trampling, but I still worry about you. Dexter has an incredibly difficult and dark past. His life has been one tragic turn after another and his choices have led him to what can only be viewed as rock bottom. In Take My Hand, you learn a bit about Dexter’s troubled past and his struggles, but in Hold on Tight you actually experience these struggles first hand and let me tell you, it isn’t pretty. Things get ugly and the author does and excellent job bringing the reader into the world of addiction. This plays a heavy role in this book and I am still in awe of how I was able to envision every single detail as described. This makes me love Nicola Haken’s writing all the more. She took a very heavy, very difficult problem and made you walk through it from all sides…as Dexter, as Emily and even all the supporting characters and how they were affected. This is an incredible follow up to Take My Hand and I cannot wait for books three and four — Lean on Me (#3) and Never Let Go (#4). The story ended in a way that is going to drive you nuts and though I had my suspicions, the ending still got to me.

I highly recommend this book for my new adult/adult fiction/contemporary romance fans. This is an intense book and not recommended for readers under 18 due to language, explicit drug use, and sexual content. I'd also recommend starting with Book One - Take My Hand as these are not intended to be read as a stand alone.

I was provide a copy of the series Take My Hand by the author for an honest review.

Holy Smoke I just finish reading all four book of this series ( Take My Hand, Hold On Tight, Lean On Me, and Never Let Go ). And I love every single one of them, since I fisnih all four books I decide to write a little about each book in my review.

I felt in love with this series from the first page of the first book, to the very last page of the last book, and I love every single minute of it, their si so much going on in this series that is not even funny, this series got me on a roller coaster, it got me mad, crying, and laughing, and I enjoy all of it I love the characters and love how the series turn out to be, even though I finish it I want more.

Book 1 Take My Hand

Emily is ninteen years old, and she left her family to move in with her best friend Rachel to London in order to attend university, but she has being sheltered and protected all her life by her family, she never had expirence the real world, now that she's in London she want to expirience it, she starts making friend and meeting new people, even thoug she is shy and never show interest in no body, but all that change the moment that she see Dexter, Dexter is an American in London his running from his past, from the things that he has done and the people that he has hurt, Dexter spend his day working and going to school, he dont let no one get closed to him, but all that change the moment that he meets Emily.
I love the way this two act with each other, and love it how they tried to fight the attraction that they have for each other, love it how they both started fall in love.

Book 2 Hold On Tight

This book picks right up where the first one is left of.
Dexter is feeling lost and is getting out of control, using drugs trying to numb his guilt and pain, on the other end Emily is trying to hold on to him, when she finally notice that Dexter has relapsed and she cant take it any more, she decide to go back home, when Dexter see that Emily has left he spiral even deeper into his own personal hell on earth, than we meet Jeff and let me just say I love Jeff, with the help of aunt Sarah, Jeff and Emily they help Dexter through rehab, after that they decide to go back to London.
Now the question is what surprised would they have when they get their.

Book 3 Lean On Me

This is Rachel and Jared story I love this two from the first two book, and I am so happy that we get to read about this two.

Rachel is in a wheelchair she is afraid to let anyone get closed to her, she is loud and outgoing, she dont want anyone help bacuse she think they will pity her, than we have Jared he will do everything that he could into Rachel gives up and caves in, Jared dont care what people think of him, and as their dealing with Rachel insecurities and needing to understanding the srong guy, at the other end Jared is also dealing with some health issue that he is scare to face it, will they make it and pass their issues and be happy.
I love the way that this two are with each other, love the way how Jared is with Rachel, love it how he show her how much he care and love her.

Book 4 Never Let Go

This is the final book of the series, this book picks right up where Hold On Tight is left off. This was the perfect ending to this sereis, we get to find out alot of the answers that where left on the last book, we get to find out about what was going on with Chris, we get to see how the girls made up and they all became friends again, we get to see each characters more clear and how their characters grow up, and the way they all became a family, and the love that they have for each other.

I really love and enjoy this sereis and I am ready to Re-Read it again, thats how much I love this series and I am not gone stop saying that, their is alot of angry moment, sad moment and crying moment, but I love them all, Author Nicola Haken THANK YOU for introducing me to this amzaing wonderful characters and this awesome great books love it.

Hold On Tight is the second book in this series. I fell in love with Dexter and Emily and their relationship in Take My Hand, which is the first book. We were able to see Em let down her guard and allow Dex into her heart, even after he took her back to America and shared his secrets about his mother. The first book ended as his mother died and we were left wondering if Dex would be able to handle the guilt and pressure without going back to his drugs that he used to escape. Would he be able to trust that Em isn't going to leave him as soon as she sees all of his flaws and cracks in his walls. Em just wants to love him, she wants to be there for him but at some point she has to decide when she is done with him pushing her away and running from her.

As this book begins we see them trying to sort out what to do with his mothers house and belongings and making plans for his Aunt Sarah to come back to England with him and Em. All was going well till his father showed up. That man is pure evil and had abused Dex and his mom for years. He was there to let Dex know the house belonged to him and he knew about the secrets that Dex had been hiding. When his Aunt Sarah came home, she had a few secrets that she had learn from the lawyer, unfortunately, what she had found out didn't go along with what Dex had found out so the mystery begins. Dex was left once again knowing his father hated him, but why. What did that little boy do to this man that would create such a need for him to torture Dex? Em needed those answers as well and she was determined to find out. She got the answers but she also gain more knowledge than she counted on, so much that she knew if Dex found out, it would push him over the edge.

While I wanted more of Dex and Em's relationship in this book, what we ended up getting was Dex, his addiction and his battle in fighting his addiction. We also watched him come clean with the baggage he had been carrying around all of his life about his mother and how she died. I adore Dex, he melted my heart in the first book and it would of been very difficult to turn my back on him in this book after learning about his past and seeing the broken little boy he was inside. His Aunt Sarah was a life saver for him his whole life. She could seriously be called an angel the way she gave up her own life to take care of Dex and his mom. Em showed us how strong she is, yet also the deep amount of love and acceptance she had for Dex. Hers was a true love that Dex never knew was in the world. In the end, I think the author was a genius to take us down this path with Em and Dex. So we didn't get a bunch of love story, we did get a stronger couple who will need this bond to face the next book

The ending of the book left me once again dying for more. We will get to see more of Chris, find out his future and I pray that Dex can be to Em what she is going to need in the next part of this story because this will crush her. The author gave us back the characters we fell in love with and introduced us to more people, some who I wanted to kill, a few I started to hate, but by the end could feel real empathy for. It was clear that the author did her research about drug abuse and addiction. She kept the story real with no fluff about life as an addict, but she kept it respectable and within reason so those who have never dealt with it could grasp the story, understand and be able to separate the addiction from the person.

I so love this authors writing style and the flow she used in this series to keep you on the edge of your seat without overwhelming you with so much drama. She leaves you wanting more Dex, Em and yes even Rachel, the spit fire best friend. I highly recommend this series.

First, I want to come out and say that I absolutely LOVED the first book in this series, Take My Hand. Yes, it had some minor angst, but what NA burgeoning-love story doesn’t? So when the last book ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, I had been waiting not so patiently for this installment to come out.

So I dove right in and….

Put it back down. I couldn’t read it. It was really, really difficult to read. Mind you, not because there was anything wrong with the writing or characters, it was that I hated seeing these characters, which I have become quite fond of, in such incredible pain. I really had a hard time making it through, stopping every few chapters to take in something a little lighter. This allowed me to go back and refocus without getting too down about what was happening. At about 75% or so, especially with the introduction of Jeff (you’ll know what I mean when you meet him), I had gotten to the point where I didn’t want to put the book down, I was again fully immersed. Dexter’s downfall was gritty, and dirty, and Ms. Haken pulled no punches, but ultimately, Dexter was able to redeem himself, with a little help from some friends.

In the first book we meet Dexter who is a recovering drug addict. He had gone to England to start a new life, aware from all of the triggers that led him down the path of drugs to begin with. But when a family tragedy sets him back, he quickly finds himself looking to old ways to self-medicate. Ms. Haken really captured the desperation of drug addiction. Not only the desperation of the addict himself, but of his family. Any family with a loved one suffering from any type of substance abuse will tell you it is not just the addict that is affected by their actions. The entire family suffers. It was especially difficult to see Emily deal with Dexter because while she had grown so independent and strong over the course of Take My Hand, she really wasn’t prepared to deal Dexter in this element. However the fact that she stood by him to the end is a testament to her maturity.

I was glad to see that Dexter’s recovery wasn’t simply glossed over and that everyone knows and understands that he will always be an addict, it is just how he deals with it that will be the true test of how he remains in recovery. I liked that Jeff was unconventional, because not everyone responds to the same approach towards recovery.

I loved reading more about Emily’s relationship with her brother Chris. He truly came through as a champion on her behalf and you could feel the mutual love and respect between the two of them. At the end of Hold On Tight we learn some disturbing news about Chris, and I fear that once again I’m going to be facing an ugly cry at some point. I am very eager to find out how that situation is going to play out.

I’m also looking forward to learning more about Rachel in the next book as her presence in this book was minimal, and you could feel that. She really does bring some comic relief (something that this book could have used at certain points, though I understand why it didn’t). The relationship between her and Emily suffered greatly while Emily was in the States tending to Dexter and his needs, so it will be interesting to see if the two can go back to the way things were. I’m looking forward to more banter between Dexter & “Snickers”. ☺

Five stars once again to Ms. Haken; she has taken these characters to a whole new level. I love her style of writing and the way that she really gets into the heads of her characters. I love the honesty they have with the reader (especially when it comes to Dexter’s sense of humour!) and it feels like we are a part of the narrative, rather than simply an observer.

Wow! What a powerful story full of hope, despair, grief, and love.

Emily and Dexter are in for the fight of their lives. Only three months into their relationship and Emily is trying to hold on to Dexter while he battles through a dangerous drug addiction. Her friendship with Rachel is on the rocks and she feels like she’s losing her soul mate. Recent events have brought Dexter back into the past he worked so hard to escape. He cannot break free of the guilt that drives him to numb the pain with drugs. He believes he doesn’t deserve love and pushes everyone away. When the addiction is so bad he does nothing but concentrate on where he’ll get his next fix, can Emily save him before it’s too late?

““Please, baby...please stop running from me,” she begged - her voice strained and uneven.
“I’m trying.” I sounded pathetic. My voice was weak and eyes began to sting. “I’m really am. I just...I’m fucked up, doll. I’m losing it. I’m losing everything.”
“You’re not losing anything,” she replied, sounding determined as she raised her chin to look up at me. She pressed her warm palm to the side of my cheek and stared intently, purposely into my eyes. “You’re not losing anything,” she repeated. “I won’t let you.”
If she only knew. If she only knew I’d already thrown it all away. She was right - I’m not losing anything.
I’ve already lost it.
And the only thought more frightening than that right now, is I’m almost out of gear.”

I do not have any experience with drugs or addiction, but through Dexter’s voice, I believe I felt the hopelessness and despair. It was so scary and sad. The scenes of drug use were eerily detailed and coupled with very believable reasons as to why Dexter would go so far to forget his life. Emily’s concern and love were also felt and I was brought to tears more than once. I LOVED IT! The raw emotion in HOLD ON TIGHT was really powerful. I find myself wondering what I would do if I were in Emily’s shoes because for most of the story I really felt like I was living their story.

The reason for a four star rating instead of five is that the characters would slip in dialogue with the reader out of the blue and it felt unnecessary and forced. It broke the flow of the story for me, but I know that this is something that may not concern other readers. I also wish there was more mention of Emily’s best friend, Rachel, even though she was absent due to conflicts in their friendship. I missed her humor in this story.

This is a powerful love story full of despair and hope for a better future, which I highly recommend. HOLD ON TIGHT was not without a cliffhanger leaving you wishing you had a copy of the next installment. It’s a doozy even though there was heavy foreshadowing of a problem. Emily and Dexter are in for another fight and I can’t wait to read LEAN ON ME (Hint, hint Nicola. Please send a copy ASAP!)

What another fabulous book in this series! There is angst, love, friendships, family, shocking revelations and more that will capture you heart until the end.

Emily is an amazing girlfriend. She's supportive and there for Dexter. She's in America trying to fight, save and work with Dexter on things. His Aunt also is quite supportive and kind to her which is wonderful and she becomes basically her "mom" in a sense. However, their trip is full of heartache and pain some which Emily knew she would endure and then some!

Dexter is grieving and processing everything that is going on. The 2 most wonderful girls in his life love him and he's still hung up on past problems and then issues that arise while being at his Aunt's house. Sometimes, it's easy to go back to what you know that to fight for life and live.

OMG! I have to say I love Emily. I just love her so much. She's stronger than I would be. She's so loyal and supportive and emotionally there for Dex. She wants to be his rock, but he's not letting her truly in. The I'm Sorry's are starting to get old for her.. she just wants in. I loved her for the love, support and constant faith she has in Dex and the amount of love she has for his Aunt.

Dexter oh man! I loved him, hated him and loved him again. He's been through the wringer, but we each have our own trials and tribulations in our lives... but he didn't truly cope and accept them especially with someone coming into their home and ruining their wonderful time together(him, his aunt and Em). He can be so loving, definitely loyal and loves Emily so much. I loved that side of him and enjoyed when the revelations came into play and loved how he wanted and knew what he had to do!
At one point I had tears in my eyes for him and for Emily!

His Aunt.. wow! She's wonderful and a fabulous lady. One that would support and love her nephew like her own son. I loved her devotion, love and support she gave not only Dex but to Emily as well. She's a wonderful person for them both.

I also enjoyed seeing Chris in this book. That is Emily's brother. He is supportive, wonderful, caring, even talks with Dex and helps him.

This book is filled with emotional pain! Pain from Emily over her own past with her mom, the fear/pain and more she is feeling for Dex, Dex's emotional pain from everything, the pain of his aunt, Chris and then some..... you feel for them all! You fall in love with them and then wow.... THAT ENDING! You kind of see it coming, but you aren't sure and wow! It's major and can't wait for the next book! It's heartbreaking!

If you loved the first book, you will fall in love with Dex and Emily all over again. Enjoy their banter, love, fights, strength in one another and more that will truly keep you reading until the very end!

Well done!

4.5 stars from me

Hold Me Tight is one those deep books. This story is heavy in the sense that it deals with some pretty serious issues and they are not sugar coated.

I read some reviews about this book before I started reading it and people who have read the first book in the series, Take My Hand, are sort of disappointed that Emily and Dexter’s good friends don’t play as large of a role in this book. I understand where they are coming from, I too missed the friendship and banter between the group. For this portion of Emily and Dexter’s story, I felt like it was right for Jared and Rachel to be left out. What these two were going through was soooo deep and so personal, even with Rachel and Emily being as close as they are, friends really didn’t have a huge part in this struggle. This was something Emily and Dexter had to work through themselves, as a couple.

I loved how … raw this book was. It just laid everything out there for the readers to be a part of. It feels like you are right in the thick of everything with the characters. This book made me mad, made me cry, and made me laugh until there were tears in my eyes. Even though I have no experience with any of the issues the characters where dealing with, I felt like this was an excellently portrayal of real life without glossing over any part of what really happens in these situations.

My favorite thing about both books is the strong relationships between all of the charters, especially Emily and Dexter. They are put through the ringer, more than once, in Hold Me Tight and Haken manages to give them this strong bond without making it a fairy tale love or an unrealistic love. I really envied Dem and Em’s relationship by the end of the book.
Hold Me Tight is not for children. The characters have filthy mouths, passionate physical relationships and addictive personalities but they beautiful people whose story will suck you in from chapter one.

If you enjoy a good love story and can handle an honest portrayal of a struggling addict, you will LOVE Hold Me Tight! You should read Take My Hand first to get a good back story so just go ahead and get them both at the same time.

Nicola Haken is into cliffhangers but not in a bad way. Just in a way that makes it totally necessary for you to read the next book. Which is exactly what I will be doing when Lean On Me and Never Let Go are released later this year!
I give it 4 1/2!

This is the continued story of Emily and Dexter from Take My Hand. It picks up where the first book left off. It's written in the same dual POV but this one seems to concentrate more on Dexter's side than Emily's which I really like. It's something about being inside the guy's head that makes a story so much more enjoyable to me! Nicola Haken has become one of my favorite authors as I read this series. I love how she has the character seem as if the reader is right there beside them and they're having a conversation with you. It helps to draw you in and you feel even more involved in the story which strengthens the bond you have with the character. I can't recall any books that I've read that does that to the extent she does and I really enjoy it!

Emily finally sticks her head out of her turtle shell and faces the fact that Dex has relapsed. Things get a little too intense for her and she makes the hard decision to go back home without Dex because she can't sit by and watch the man she loves destroy himself. Instead of doing she and the reader hopes and snapping out of it to follow her, Dex spirals even deeper into his own private hell. Emily's brother, Chris, plays a bigger role in this book which I felt was good because Emily needed a family member there to help her since Rachel is pretty much non-existent in this installment.

The jerkwad sperm donor follows through with his demand of wanting the house, so Aunt Sarah and Dex find themselves homeless. Sarah gets a job and moves into a crap apartment and Dex spends most of his time on the streets, where he eventually overdoses.

This book has a couple of truly heartbreaking scenes as well as detailed drug usage. My heart broke for Dex as he finds himself having to face his demons head on to try and save himself and his relationship.

The surprise in this book for me, though, came not from one of the main characters, but a supporting one. It was a welcome surprise though and I'm really glad Nicola wrote it the way she did.

You find yourself still pulling for this couple who have had themselves broken and worn down, hoping they'll find they way back to each other. Depending on how you view it, it's either a good thing or a bad thing, but Emily and Dexter's story still isn't to it's finish. I foresee a devastating event happening and I worry how it will affect everyone.

The next book in the series is Rachel and Jared's story, so we have to wait for book 4 to see how this love story ends. That's my only complaint about Hold On Tight is having to wait for the release of Never Let Go!

Given by the author for an honest review for her Blog Tour

This book is definitely worth holding on tight…

It is amazing. It is brilliant. It is indescribable. In fact, there are literally no worthy words for it. I am awed and dumbfounded by Nicola’s talent and writing. I loved Saving Amy and Take my hand, but Hold on tight is the best book she has written (that I’ve read so far, at least!).

Nowadays, the world is too messed up. There are so many cruelties happening all over the world, so I don’t usually read so heart aching books, since books is my outlet. But Nicola’s books just pierce your heart and stay there. You’re practically crying while reading them and you still want more. You want to kick the characters while absolutely loving them. I honestly believe Nicola’s writing is getting more and more mesmerizing, as time passes. And if you’re wondering where that does leave us? Well it leaves us as a puddle on the freaking floor.

Hold On Tight is one of the BEST books I have ever read and despite the fact we’re still in January, I think it’s one of the best books of the year.

It speaks about the ugly truth of being an addict and being someone who loves an addict. It speaks about your love about him/her and your love about yourself. It speaks about this unconditional limitless feeling that’s called love. It speaks about the ugly truth that sometimes everything is dark and you can’t see any light in your life. But most of all, it speaks about the strength of a person, who fights to survive his demons and be better. Who fights for the people he loves. It’s the ugly truth some people hide, some despise, some ignore, some live with and some overcome.

I think I’ve said this before. But I admire so much the authors who write books that reflect situations like these. So many people live in a bubble and books is a great way to broaden your horizon. To see what others live with and struggle. So, I want to congratulate Nicola and any other author who has done this incredible task.

About the characters now…I would LOVE to write about them..to comment on them…to praise or even kick them for what they may have done..But I won’t..

Hold On Tight is the book you read without having read anything about it. You don’t want any spoilers. You don’t want to hear a thing about it. You want to read it without interruptions and without spoilers. It is an amazing book that your heart needs. And it’s the one that will make it beat so much faster…

What can I say? I LOVE the story of Dexter and Emily. Hold On Tight is the second amazing story in the Take My Hand series. This story continues right where Take My Hand left off and the main focus is on Dexter in this novel. This book delves into Dexter's childhood and we get a glimpse into what he went through as a child and the torment his Mom endured as well, which explains his reaction to seeing his father after so many years. Emily and Aunt Sarah try to help Dexter cope with his demons. This story also has some very HOT scenes between Dexter and Emily, so it doesn't disappoint in that department either. There are also appearances by Rachel, Jared and Emily's brother Chris. You will fall in love with Chris all over again in this story.

This installment is such an emotional ride as we go through all of Dexter's struggles both as a child, with drugs and in the aftermath of his mother's death. Nicola has a way of sweeping you up into her story and making you a part of the family. She has great character development throughout. I felt like I was dealing with all of Dexter's emotional pain right along with him. This story is filled with so much struggle, pain, and heartache, but love is always present throughout from everyone that knows and loves Dexter. Be prepared to laugh too because there were moments in this book where I put my Kindle down and just laughed out loud.

I can't wait for the next installment of this series! I am totally in love with it and I highly recommend it if you love a good romance with a little bit of angst to keep you guessing. Nicola is one of my favorite authors and she is on the top of my favorite author list. Thanks for sharing your talent with me!

"Love is such a powerful emotion. It’s not all about the hearts and flowers and bluebirds singing. It involves compassion, trust, compromise… and often, pain."

This is a amazing, haunting, real, jaw dropping emotional and yet beautiful book. The story of struggle and addiction is brought to you in such a real way that you will feel the struggles and emotions the characters are experiencing. It will sweep you into their world and the emotional ride is well worth it. Nicola Haken has created such a realistic portrait of addiction, struggling with addiction and love that it will break your heart to see but still have you hoping for more. Praying for more.

Kleenex is a requirement for this hauntingly gorgeous and perfectly beautiful love story and tale. The book picks up where take my hand leaves off but we go darker.

Now Dex is lost and has jumped down the rabbit hole. As he gets out of control trying to numb his pain and guilt via drugs, Emily is trying to hold on as tight as she can to save him. But as Alice finds out was you jump the only way to climb back up is to reach bottom first. And this is the same for Dex. He has to reach bottom and bottom for him was his dad and almost losing Emily. As he fights for his life Emily fights for him. For him to become the man he is and doesn't think he is.

Throughout the story we learn about Dex's past and his addictions. We find out what means something to him and what love is. We see him face his addiction with fear and openness. Finally seeing that he has something to live for and not just drugs- he has Emily.

As their life gets in order though, a bone chilling reveal is made to Dex one that will shatter the world Emily knows and I hope for everyone that a HEA is in the cards for Emily, Dex and her brother Chris because these three deserve it.

You will laugh, cry and fall in love with Emily, Dex and Chris in this book more than you can imagine. Haken has you feel what they are feeling and brings you into the world of love and addiction in such a beautiful and realistic way that you will not put the book down until every last page is read.

This story was way sadder and way more intense than the last one so brace yourself when reading! If you haven’t read the first one do because I don’t want to spoil ANYTHING! Ready? Okay, so in this story we follow Emily and Dexter right where the last book left off and if you’re like me you’re pretty shocked by some events that started to take place. Dexter is taking his mother’s death really hard and starts to revert back to his bad habits. Emily, never having dealt with this kind of thing, has no idea what do and is happy that she’s at least not alone. Never having seen the signs she has no idea that the dark path Dexter is going down is one that will cost them their relationship and Dexter is in no state of mind to think about what’s going on between the two; at this point, he only cares about one thing. Not only is Dexter reverting, but more things from his past come into light and by the time Emily and his Aunt Sarah figure out what’s going on, it’s too late to save him. Emily must make one of the biggest decisions of her life; does she stay and help or does she leave in hopes that it will wake him up enough to see what’s going on? Emily has not only stopped talking to her family but also Rachel and because of the stress she’s going through she can’t seem to get back to Rachel or be there for anyone else. I can’t really say much more about this book because what I’ve said has probably given enough away but read this book you will not be disappointed. It is better than the first!

This is my 5 star review for Hold on Tight by Nicola Haken for Eskimo Princess Book Reviews.

Hold on Tight picks up where Take my Hand left off. Dexter is hanging on by a thread. He is lost, broken, and pulling away from everyone and everything that he loves. He doesn’t want to fall off his sobriety but feels like he can’t cope with life if he doesn’t have a little something to take the edge off. Will he be able to deal with where is life is leading him? Will he make the mistake and push Emily away for good?

Emily is young and naïve. She doesn’t want to face the hard parts of her life. She is totally in love with Dexter and doesn’t know how to make his life better. She is doing all that she can to keep him happy and healthy. When things get tough and she finds herself in a position that scares her will she be able to keep her sanity? How will she cope with Dexter when she finds out he is using again, even just a little?

This book was very emotional for me. The author does a great job of jumping into a hard topic, drug usage. Hold on Tight is well written from alternating POV’s. We get to see how both Dexter and Emily’s sides of the story and how they cope with everything that is thrown their way. Where there was a lot of humor in Take my Hand, Hold on Tight is a more serious book. Don’t worry, Jeff, adds a lot of humor that will counter act the seriousness! He is refreshing and a character that I really liked. I look forward to reading the rest of the series to see where their story goes. I can’t wait to read about Jared and Rachel as well!

Dexter has to be the most infuriating character in a long time. I constantly found myself screaming at my kindle at his actions. Now that is out the way, this is the continuation of Emily and Dexter's story, picking up exactly where 'Take My Hand' finished. With an unexpected and unwanted blast from Dexter's past turning up and reawakening old feelings, his path of self destruction starts and the life he has fought so hard to rebuild comes tumbling down around him as he slips back into old, bad habits.

For Emily it is sheer torture as she tries to be supportive and save their relationship but with Dexter pushing her away, she has no choice but to head back home. Despite everything that Emily has been through and experienced in her life, she is still naïve in some respects and with little understanding of the path Dexter is taking there is little she can do for him.

So this is an uncomfortable read with subject matters of drug abuse and violence as a recurring theme but they are dealt with in such a way that you are drawn into the story. Even though I found Dexter infuriating, he has a lot going in his life that you feel a certain empathy with him. I think that had we not seen Dexter with his life mostly together in the first book, we as readers would struggle with the Dexter we find in this one.

With their journey still far from over, I am eagerly waiting to see where this gritty series takes the reader next. The very talented Nicola Haken has produced another amazing story and a fantastic instalment to an excellent series.

Again I was gifted this book, I'm giving a 100% honest review.

Loved book 1...Book 2 was amazing.

Holy god, this book was very deep with the subject it was dealing with(don't want to spoil it for anyone). Dex has really suffered throughout his 24years and he deals with the way he's always dealt with things but at what cost. He has so many levels he's not a straight forward guy, he's very complicated. He has a few shocks to deal with within this book but finds a different way to deal. Nice to see things are changing. Aunt Sara is strong in both books but she's been there done it before, I'd love to see her meet someone in future books. Em, she's distanced herself from Rachel which is sad they were best friends BUT life happens. Em is dealing with her own demons but always manages to be there for Dex, other than Chris who is there for her...until Jeff talks some sense into her. Want to see her stand up for what she thinks is right and her beliefs to her...you didn't think I was gonna spill something did you. Jared and Rachel was in this book in a small portion but what I read at the end has me excited. Chris is Em's brother, protective covers his relationship with his sister. Shocked with what he does but understand it. The end of the book is a WTH no this can't be happening.

Again another amazing book and I'm looking forward to the next book.

So if 4.5 stars was an option, I would totally be there! This book picks right up where "Take My Hand" leaves off. We see a lot of Dexter and how he is handling himself and watching Emily try to be there for him. This was the only part that was kind of hard to get through. I wanted more connection between Emily and Dexter, but I understand what Dex was going through and that was where the focus was. I think I just kind of missed that connection between them. But look out come about 60 percent, because the story picks up and takes off like leaf in a wind storm! Emily and Dexter have so much to work through and so much to overcome. You meet Jeff in this book, and he is AMAZING! I think because I am a social worker, I can relate to him. I have always liked the edgier social workers, they seem to get through to some more than others! Not so much Rachel and Jared in this book, but I'm sensing we will get more of them in book #3!!
I am excited that Emily is so caring, even at the worst of times. A lot unravels towards the end of this book and I had many *gasp* moments! Now I am on pins and needles to see where the story continues...because there is soooo much left unanswered(but it's a good thing...leaves you wanting more!)

After reading Saving Amy and Missing Pieces by Nicola Haken i was gripped by her writing skills, how she was able to let you fall in to a very well written story and made you feel part of it.
So one clicking the Take My Hand series was easy i didn't think twice....and i'm so glad that i did one click away.
I waited till all four books were available before i started to read them and they were well worth the wait.
So Book 2 take my hand series
4 people 4 different backgrounds with one thing in common to learn to live!
Rachel and Emmie friendship is really put to the test in Book 2 but with Emmie seeming the weaker one out of the 2 you soon realise Emmie is a strong loving person that only see's good in other.
With Dexter and Emmie relationship up in the air and with Emmie finding out real heavy stuff you really do hope and pray she get's though this...
I have to say each page i turned i just wonder where it was all going too...i wasn't expecting the ending that just BLOW me away..i sat at the edge of my chair and scream noooooooooo...OMG what an ending..
Couldn't wait till i finished book 2 and went straight into book 3.....Again NH has a very natural talent for writing and for getting the reader to fall in love with each character...brilliant just brilliant!

5 Emotional-Rollercoaster-Stars! ☆☆☆☆☆
I loved this book even more than the first. Emily and Dexter's relationship is one to admire. This book focused more on their lives together in America with Dexter's Aunt. Dexter's addiction took a turn for the worst & dangerous in this book. At one point i couldn't even imagine how he could get his life back on track. My heart broke from how he was treating his aunt and Emily.
And My eyes got watery at times reading about his life spiraling out of control. I still cant believe he went from doing coke on bathroom seats to heroine in alleys, and Emily tried to stay by him anyway. I don't know if i would have been able to do that.
Emily is beyond what i would call a strong woman. On top of tackling her own demons, she took on Dexter's without a seconds delay. And I'm proud to say she succeeded. I was ecstatic when Dexter started turning his life around and f#%king Emily senseless. :)
I liked Dr. Jeff's character. He was definitely not your typical rehab psychologist. He was blunt and flirtatious (which made me worry).... But his methods actually made an impact on Dex and hell, even i was agreeing with him by the end.
This was a great read. Im so happy i came across this author. :)

This is the second book in the series. I truly loved Emily and Dexter in the first book. The ability for them to open up to each other and find love. But, Emily knows that there are more secrets in Dexter's life. More than he has been able to share with her.

Going to America with Dexter to deal with the demons of his past is not what Emily had thought. To find out the history of his mother and the guilt that he has been dealing with is pushing both of them. Emily just wants to love Dexter, wants him to know that she is there for him no matter what. Dexter has set himself on the path to self destruction. He loves Emily but his shame and guilt are controlling him and the only way he knows to deal with them is to turn to drugs. Can a love so new break the pattern that has controlled Dexter for so long?

Nicola once again deals with a heart wrenching emotionally charged topic. Her insight and ability to write about Dexter's addiction is simply a gift.

Wow, what an amazing read. I thought the first book was good but this one blew me away. Dexter and Emily continue to take your heart and kick the hell out of it, I really wondered where this book would end. Ok, I'll admit I was scared how this book would end.

The entire story had me gripped, this is an incredibly emotive read that leaves you exhausted at the end. I loved Dexter and Emily and there was no way I wanted unhappiness for them but I guess that is addiction for you. The twists and turns in this story shocked me in places and made me cry in others. The whole book is just an incredible journey.

I was sad not to see much of the previous characters that I came to love but the new ones added made up for that. Nicola Haken certainly goes for the jugular with her books and there is no way on this earth that I won't be reading the next instalments.

An amazing book by an amazing writer.

As he is trying to get over the death of his mother, someone from Dex's past comes to haunt him and threatens to take everything he holds dear away. He resorts to old habits to make himself deal. Emily can't stand watching Dex pull away from being the man she fell in love with. Aunt Sarah suggests she go home for a while. There is no helping Dexter until he wants to help himself.

When the time comes, Emily rushes to Dexter's side. And together, they help Dexter get back to before his mother's death.

I thought I cried enough after the first book, but this book is just as emotional. I am sure the next one will as well.

I am really liking this series so far and can't wait for more.

Make sure you read Take My Hand before you read this. As much as I loved Take My Hand I loved this even more.

This is a continuation of Dexter and Emily's story. The author did a fantastic job of blending one story into another. I ended up reading this in one sitting.
Personally I found this more emotional than the first one. This book had me literally glued from start to finish. Brilliant storyline. Fantastic writing. Applause to the author.

Although this ends in a cliff hanger I'd still recommend these books.

Ms Haken really knows her subject matter. She writes with pure conviction about a very difficult subject.

This is a much darker read than the first book as it is dealing with his addiction. The raw emotion from them both, pours out of the pages.

Again I really can't fault anything about this book and it really deserves the 5 stars I have given it for the writing style, the portrayal of the subject matter and the very true to life depiction of the characters' feelings.

Well done on an excellent book!

This picks up exactly where we leave book 1 with a blast from Dexter's past showing up he finds it difficult to stay strong and starts to fall back into his old ways. For Emily this is the worst thing that could happen to them and we see Dexter starting to push her away but Emily has given up everything for Dexter and they are both now living in America so will she fight for their relationship and show Dexter that she is all he needs. This book is a little darker that the first one but again had me gripped from the first page.
