I had a simple life. I worked two jobs, made ends meet, and hung out with my mom and twin brother. The other part of my life was about avoiding him, but when SWAT raided my boyfriend’s home, that was the last straw. The boyfriend got tossed and to help me keep busy, my brother talked me into joining their old band again, but I had to be honest. It wasn’t a hard sell. Playing drums was in my blood. I used to be addicted and that craving hadn’t been satisfied in three long years. The only problem was their lead singer. It was him. The drums might not have been the only thing I was addicted to. I think I was still addicted to him too.
I'm devastated that I'm giving this author such a low rating. Considering her books are my guilty pleasure, I always assumed her stories would be 5 star reads for me.
I love and adore this author with all my heart but what I expected from this book and what I got were night and day different. I excepted the focused to be on the two main leads, Luke and Brielle; unfortunately, their story was pretty much overshadowed by two secondary characters. Because of that, I had a difficult time connecting with the main characters, their love story, or even staying invested in the plot.
I've waited almost a year for this book's release. Maybe my expectations were set too high. Happens! That said, I'm excited to see what she has in store for her readers next.
Nothing much was shed on the back story. The book started so freakin' abruptly; my head was spinning.
I didn't connect a single bit with the music, No idea what was happening there... and I'm guessing it was the bottom line of this book.
I didn't connect with the characters.
I mean, you know shit is disconnected when no one gives two fucks about the mother. OR when someone is calling your TWIN a whore, slut and you don't say shit back.
I felt more for Eli, than I did for anyone else in the first 40% of the book. Like, at first I was sure he is the main characters.. but somewhere down the line, it got too foggy. + Her 'reason' for dating him MADE ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE.
Hell, I still don't know who the main characters were clearly, because this book was about everyone.
There was nothing major about her 'drumming' and when the author spoke about it, it was so freakin' whats happening type. I've read rockstar books and I ALWAYS CONNECT. This was like o.O 'whats happening bro' where is this heading?
There was no emotions in this book, when she told him her secret of that day and his reaction.. it was so BLAH and MEH!
The author tried taking this story to too many places, it just got lost.
There was no base. The book tried to play out too many main characters, each had to have their own story... in the end you don't feel anything towards anyone specific.
Turned out to be a very NA YA book, no sex, no steam! :S Not much angst too.. which the author is pretty famous for. Pretty bland.
The following ratings are out of 5: Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙 Romance: 💚🖤💙 Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📙 World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍 Character development: 🙂😮😥😤
The heroine:Brielle - when SWAT busts into her boyfriend Elijah’s place while they were in bed and took them into custody for dealing drugs, she drops him like a hot potato. Bri ends up re-joining the band “Braelle” she founded with her brother Braden. She had put the band behind her three years ago when something happened to her best friend Luke and she couldn’t deal with it.
The Hero:Luke - He grew up living next door to Brielle and they were best friends. He used to climb in her bedroom window and sleep with her when things got tough at home. Three years ago they admitted they loved each other and the next day something happened and she left him. He is the lead singer of Braelle and still has feelings for Bri.
The Story: The band consists of Luke, Braden and Emerson (Bri’s cousin who has hated her for three years since she started dating Elijah, who was his best friend). They all agree that Bri can rejoin the band, but things aren’t easy for any of them.
This was a crazy ride and a bit of a messy plot. There were side storylines about Braden sleeping with a bunch of different groupies including the manager of the bar the band plays at, Elijah and his drug business and some rival drug dealers, Emerson and his drug problem and his hatred of Bri and lastly about the secret Bri has been keeping from Luke.
The story takes some bad turns and I didn’t really like the way it was handled when Bri’s secret came out. I usually love Tijan’s work but this was a bit so-so in my opinion. I did like the characters, just not the sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll themes, I guess. Though I do like rockstar romances, this was just a bit to depressing for my tastes.
The book was told mostly from Brielle’s point of view, but there were some chapters told from Luke’s as well. The narration was done in dual narration, by Lidia Dornet and Nelson Hobbs. They do a good job, though I like duet narration a lot better, where the male narrator does all the male parts and the female narrator does all the female parts no matter who’s POV the chapter is in.
Hmmm... This was a nice reading, but something bothered me and I don't know what it was!!! I adore Tijan's book, but that wasn't one of my favorite... It was good. Ιt was having a nice background, but it was a little bit comfusing!!! Even back there, in BS2, when for the first time these guys introduced themselves to us, the tension between them was confusing... Brianne and Luke's thing (because i can't reffer to what they were having as a relationship) was intense and rough and awkard and bitter and sweet... all in the same time... Usually i'm with the side of the woman, but in this case i was 200% with Luke's side.... And why was that???? Let me explain you some things...
Bri was with Elijah for 3 years but she wasn't accepting everything they told her about him... She enjoyed to live in ignorance for her own reasons, but when police arrested her and El, she is forced to wake up and to realize that El was a drug dealer... And the fate brings her back to her true love, Luke. He and her brother had a band, a band that she used to be a part of it, as their drumer...Her brother from the fear that she might return back to her boyfriend, persuade his friends to take her back in the band... Luke accepted it but he keeps her away from him, even though we can see that he wanted her, but he can't accept what she did to him before 3 years...
And that's why i was saying to you that i was in his side.... He was beaten to death and she left him alone to the hospital without visiting him and right away she started dating El... Hmmmmmm.... Okay!!! From the beginning, we could understand that she was hiding something about that night and from her fear she reacted that way... But when i finally found out about that, i still didn't liked the way she haddled it... And neither Luke liked it when he found out about that!!!! I'm with you, man!!! And he didn't react good!!! Fuck!!! And the thing had just started to get better between them and for once again... the things turned out to be really, really ugly between them!!!!
Well, Brianne as a woman was tough, a badass girl... She never backed out from a fight and she always stood up for her friends, even though they didn't deserve it... She was in love with Luke, but she did something which scared her and she reacted bad... She was an awesome drumer and the music was coming from deep down her heart... I liked her, but i have objections about that night...
Luke was a good guy... The leader of the band and he was hurting inside... That night left its mark inside him... He loved her with every cell in his body, but that night left him wondering what the hell had happened and after he found out the truth was feeling betrayed and wounded... The scars that Bri left in his heart was much deeper than the scars in his back from the beating... And after all that, he decided that she couldn't trust her anymore, no when she kept that secret for 3 years and walk away from him... He needed her and she went in another embrace... So, he fought away his feelings for her, but he never manage to wash them away!!!
I liked that after the middle, we had Luke's POV... It was interesting!!! I liked that we saw again for a while Jesse and Alex... Hanna and Beth... I liked Braden very much and i'm wondering what the hell had happened finally with Kelly... Damn it!!! I liked even Elijah, but when she stayed away from Bri.... But i didn't liked at all Emerson... He was a dick!!! Yeah, i understand his reasons for all this hatred about Bri, but man, it wasn't your fuckin' business!!! Well, i'm waiting Elijah story and i want to find out what's goin' on with Beth and Hanna and him...
Would have been a 4 if the ending had been a bit stronger. Felt like we were missing a big chunk of the book. Anyways Tijan is my favorite guilty pleasure and I always enjoy reading her books, even if I don't love them. Bonus! I had dnf'd 4 books before this one and I read this all the way through. Hence another reason why I love this author.
Sustain was an impulse buy for me, I was really excited when I read the premise of the story and had to read it. Sadly I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I was really in the mood for a second chance story, and the fact that this had a to die for lead singer just just an added bonus in my opinion. But I don't know, it was all rather anti-climactic. Luke and Brielle, were both angry and upset so this caused a lot of tension and not in the sexual way or at least that is not how I got it.
Their world seemed to have revolved around the band, their secrets and their lies. Emerson, Bri's cousin and Luke's friend / band mate, played a HUGE role in their story that I almost began to question who the lead actually was. I found the story to be on the gloomy side and never gave me the warm and fuzzy feel that I was looking for in a second chance romance. This was a case of it's me and not the book, but I am the minority, I know plenty of others have loved this book, so give it a try :)
This book is Rated 'M' for Mediocre 3 STARS out of 5 Genre: New Adult Romance Full Review Posted 3/30/15
Sustain focuses on the relationship between Brielle and the band Braille which consists of her twin brother Braden, his best friend Luke and her cousin Emerson. Brielle was once the drummer for the band but left once she started dating a local drug dealer, Elijah. When the book opens a drug raid effectively ends her and Elijah’s relationship.
Brielle finds herself back in Braille against the wishes of her cousin Emerson who apparently cannot stand her. Luke though hesitant agrees that it would be the best move for the band so with his vote she is officially back in Braille as the drummer. The tension is there with unspoken words with her and Luke. Things eventually start to turn good between them and they become a couple.
However when the truth comes out as she opens up and finally let’s him know what happened the day he suffered without her by his side when he needed her the most. Forgiveness does not come easily. Brielle once again finds herself disconnected and trying to move on. I really don’t get why Elijah had to play such a big role in the story. I’m curious if he will get a book. That’s how much he kept popping up, it made me feel like I had to focus on him more. Ahh and at last there was a surprise cameo Jesse and Alex!! *grins* That was pretty cool!
My Thoughts Overall, this was just meh for me. Not my fave from Tijan. I liked it, I did not love it. The story is told mainly from Brielle's pov. I think that personally the main issue I had was the simple fact that I failed to connect with Luke or even more so feel Bri's connection/bond with him. The chemistry lacked...it simply just did not come off the pages and touch me. *sighs* It was mediocre at best. Whereas her passion for drumming and even him(Luke) watching and describing her as she played the drums was just about the only strong connection I felt. Oh and Emerson's hate for her, oh yes, I felt that.
Hmm...There were a lot of things going on with the secondary characters that outshined the couple in this book. Emerson's addiction was one of those things. But this is just my opinion. I understand that she was layering the story and creating subplots but uh it kinda just got in the way. I don't know these are just my random thoughts.
If you are a Tijan fan I say definitely give it a try. She is an author buy author for me so even when her book is just ok it can still out do some of the others I’ve recently tried. *smirks* It is what it is.
My Ratings Characters- Slightly intense Writing Style- Mediocre, nothing really stood out, felt different or made me take notice Plot/Storyline- A girl running from something in her past suddenly finds herself back where she began only to have it ripped away when the truth is revealed Steam Factor- Lo-Med-Hi I say low, On a scale of 1-10 I say 4 Entertainment Level- On a scale of Lo-Med-Hi I would say Medium. Overall- I thought it was okay. Nothing to go and run tell that about. Now go forth and read. Then come tell us about it on Goodreads! For more reviews got to:www.realitybites-letsgetlost.blogspot...
I'm really very disappointed here. What the hell happened? After reading Anti-Stepbrother, the writing I found there was good. Really good. Here? WTF? The only analogy I can think of is when you're riding in a cab and the driver is only just learning to drive stick transmission. The other thing I wasn't happy with was the feeling that I walked into movie theater in the middle of the movie. Things are going on around me and it's like I missed some crutial information in the first act. Not cool, Tijan. I know you're better than that.
You can read the first chapter on her FB -> Tijan's Writings or Tijan's books For your information, there will be a book about Cord and will be released after Elijah, that's what she said on FB *EDIT* Braille has a new title, Sustain
As much as I love Tijan's books, I'm under no illusion that they are going to be anything but a rollercoaster ride. However, I never thought I'd rate one this low. But Luke and Brielle's relationship felt so disconnected. I didn't feel the chemistry between them, and I really didn't like Luke. Also, the drama was so contrived and dare I say boring?
I still love Tijan, I just don't think I'll continue with this series.
Sustain starts with Bri and her boyfriend Elijah getting arrested. Bri never believed anyone that told her that her boyfriend Elijah was a drug dealer. She soon finds out she should of listened to them. The cops bust in on them one morning while they are sleeping and she gets arrested right along with Elijah.
After the cops have nothing on her she is set to go home. She knows her brother isn't home so she has the station call the bar where she's pretty sure her brother is. Imagine her surprise when Luke is the one that shows up to pick her up.
Bri is in shock! She wasn’t expecting Luke to be the one to show up and get her. The tension between these two starts right away.
Bri and Luke grew up together. They have been friends for a long time. They both have abusive fathers. They've always been there for each other until one night three years ago when everything changed. But I don't think either one of them stopped loving each other.
After Bri ends it with Elijah her brother wants her back around the band. Luke is not so sure. After a while Bri is tired of the cold shoulder from Luke and she sets out to make it right. But Bri is keeping a secret from Luke and she knows when she tells him he will want nothing to do with her.
When things heat up and the secret comes out I was totally pissed off at both of them! Typical Tijan drama:) lol
I loved how we got to see Luke’s point of view in the middle of the story! I couldn't wait to get inside his head. No matter what these two went through or how much they hurt each other the love was still there.
I loved watching both Luke and Bri finding their way back to what they once shared years ago.
Once again Tijan doesn't disappoint throwing in side stories about the other characters. She really knows how to get you teeth sunk into a series. Leaving you waiting very impatiently for more.
If you are like me and love a drama filled book with some super hot males and bad ass woman definitely pick up Sustain. You will not regret it!
I can't wait for more! Elijah is next. I'm hoping we get more of Luke and Bri as well.
Awesome job Tijan!! I absolutely love your writing:))
I freaking love Sustain! It is a wicked fast read with an amazing, strong female lead. Bri is badass and Tijan lets you feel her every emotion. I love the descriptions of her stage time. The story starts off with a bang, but Luke. Oh my. Luke.. I can't imagine him not being every reader's favorite book boyfriend. This book is the kind that you cuddle up with and fly through in a day.I love those kind. If you are not turning the next page because life intervenes, you are thinking about the book. And when you do finish, you will run to Tijan's social media and swoon over her pictures of Luke and the band. She's a must read for me. Get your ticket, the 5 star show is starting.
I've been binge-reading Tijan for weeks now and she is definitely up there at the top of my fav authors' list. I love the soap-opera style drama and emotional complexity of her novels. They always suck me in and eat me right up!
Sustain is a friends to lovers story set within a rockstar world (one of my favorites) with a male lead that is to die for, so I was off to a good start. I ADORED Luke and Bri was also great, even though both of them frustrated me with their inability to communicate at times. Another great thing about Tijan is her ability to create strong secondary characters. I loved Gunn! Braden was a loveable rogue and Elijah and Emerson were the token jerks (especially the latter - I wanted to swing for him so many times.)
The reason this is not a higher rating is down to some issues with the plot and certain things not being properly explained. Also, while the chemistry between Luke and Bri was sizzling, in the main, the romance was a bit on the light side. Then it all felt very rushed at the end when I wanted to see some of them together as an actual couple.
Definitely, not up to the magnificence that is the Fallen Crest series - man, I love that series SOOOO much and can't wait for book six - but still a decent read, and one I'd recommend.
In summary, this is a very good standalone contemp NA/Rocker romance and a must read if you are a Tijan fan.

I'm not trying to be mean here but I really did not enjoy this book and GR tells me that 1star means precisely that. I'm sorry to say but this did not even meet my "just okay" standards.
The gist of the story is the H and h grew up neighbors/best friends bonding over their shitty fathers and their musical talent, hooked up but something big happened and are no longer together. But fate cannot be deterred. Yet, when secrets are finally revealed over that event that happened 3 years ago, things fall apart anew. Flash forward a year or so later, the H is a bonafide rockstar - coming home for a month long deserved break.
You would think that the focus of plot development will be centered on the boys' rise to fame, the H and h's back story as childhood sweethearts and the undeniable connection that keeps bringing these two back together.
Not so much. Instead, we get typical Tijan writing style which buries us with underage drinking, absentee parents, parties, performing in bars, throwdowns, boys disrespecting women, police raids, turf wars, groupies and drug dealers. Pretty much most of the first half of this book contained pages upon pages dealing with those inane things. I was left wondering what the story was all about. And suddenly in a blink of an eye, they get back together but the secret shatters them apart anew and suddenly the H is a big rock star. What?! How?! I'm not even sure why the h felt the need to hook up with another guy after that devastating event years ago. Um, she couldn't deal with her guilt all by herself??
⚠️Trigger warning. Domestic abuse, child abuse. Mentioned not that described tbh. ⚠️
I enjoyed this read, but I have to admit, I didn’t feel like it had much purpose. Sounds crazy to think, but I feel like I was longing for so much more than what I got.
I wanted more of the back story with both the MCs. I was hoping for an actual grown up drug dealer situations, but instead I got children fighting with guns and stupidity.
Idk I feel like it was missing some depth.
But I did enjoy this read. But I did lower my star rating to a 4.0 star rating. I enjoyed myself but maybe I’m growing my own self. These rereads sometimes make or break that rating.
*original review 2017* I mean it’s Tijan. Duh
This one was written so well. What made this book was the characters rather than the story itself.
Each character was thought out pretty well, but I can tell Tijan put the most effort into Bri and Luke and Emerson characters. Tijan usually has well thought out, in depth characters, but it seems as though these three characters were the most in depth.
Yes, there were others that had more depth like Eli, but these three were part of the story through and through . (In my opinion)
The plot itself wasn’t Tijans best but it was still great.
What I like about Tijans work is the real stories. There is love, heartbreak, hurt, happy times, etc. these seem like real people to me and that’s what I love about her work.
You know, I have read quite a few of this author's books and while they're always disjointed and sometimes difficult to follow, they've never been what I'd call unfair. This one was unfair. It was basically a book about a girl who spends the whole time being verbally abused and then apologising for deserving it. It is intensely unfair. The guys are cruel, selfish, whiny and downright nasty to her and SHE apologises to THEM? It isn't until the last few chapters that the 'hero' (I use that term loosely) comes to see just how unfair he was to her, but by then I'm sorry - that ship has sailed. It's sailed, sunk, been found, raised from the ocean and is currently travelling from museum to museum under the tour name 'Too Late To Apologise, You Whiny Dickhead'.
It feels like I had been waiting for this book for like FOREVER
It has finally arrived and holy geez
When I first got into it I was all debating on weather I was going to get hooked right than or it was going to take awhile. I was hooked from the first page!!
Than after a few chapters I started getting totally nervous and even a little sweat started to take its affect on me.. ehhhh
There were times I wanted to email Tijan and tell her "Girl what the HELL were you even thinking" I went a little nuts!!!
Than I was like AHHH Nevermind I love it...
Over all it was a freaking fantastic read!! Tijan hits me every damn time its seriously a LOVE/HATE relationship!! It drives me nuts, but I guess I can't get enough because I keep going back for more!
I have been so excited and looking forward so much to this book and I have to say I am in awe. This story isn't your typical rockstar romance, its gritty and raw and deals with a lot of issues. Brielle the female lead is just amazing, she hasn't had anything easy, Luke is an amazing guy but he has deep hurts and issues. Best friends all of their lives up until a horrible traumatic event tears them apart, leaving them both, changed forever, with Brielle becoming the girlfriend to Drug Dealer Elijah. When the law catches up, it all comes to a point where Luke and Brielle have to re-enter each other's lives and finally deal and come to terms with not only everything that has pulled them apart but also with their own emotions and feelings for each other. These characters grab you and hold you tight right from the start. I don't want to give any spoilers, but its an emotional ride and also uplifting. The angst between band members, Braden (Brielle's twin brother), Emerson (Braden and Brielle's cousin) Gunn (strong silent) and Luke (holy hotness himself) and of course Brielle (one of the original members), the bitterness over things past but yet together this group still have each others backs when push comes to shove. Their journey isn't always easy and will have you at times in tears along with smiles. With so many twists and turns this book is a massive page turner and you will not want to put it down once you start !!!! You will love each and everyone of the characters, only one little problem with this book, ONE ISN'T ENOUGH!! WE WILL NEED MORE OF Luke and Brielle !!!
I don't know what happened here. Never would I have thought I would be rating a Tijan book so low. Such a bummer. This didn't even feel like her writing?!
The plot was very weak, and the big mystery reveal of the "incident" that kept Luke and Brie apart all these years was kinda lame in my opinion. This book was filled with random drug use, and a HORRIBLE excuse of a cousin (who any self-respecting person would let him fall so he could deal with the consequences of his behavior... and then he could get help). There was a whole grungy aspect, of the wrong side of the tracks type behavior- I just wanted to read at some point that everyone took a shower. I just wanted all these characters to go to college for a semester, wash their clothes and have some purpose for their lives. Even the music element didn't have the passion that it should've.
Anyway- I barely finished this one. I still love Tijan, this book just didn't work for me.
Loved the characters and their parts in the story. Bri is such a strong, tough yet feminine, independent badass. Luke, Elijah and Braden are among the few hotties in this story.
Love the love story, suspense, and all the other twist and turns. This book keeps you on your toes but also breaks your heart and puts it back together.
