Nina is normal Florida girl with a job and a life and a grandmother she adores. But lately she’s been having disturbing dreams. Dreams of a man with a shadowed face - a man filled with pain and need and desire only she can slake. She fears him but at the same time, the dreams leave her breathless with need.
Who is this dark stranger and what does he want of her?
Reddix is a Touch Kindred with an inverted Touch Sense - he can’t touch with his mind like others of his kind. Instead, he is doomed to endure their emotions like a physical invasion every time he’s around anyone.
Desperation drives him to kidnap Nina - the girl he has been dreaming of. But he doesn’t take her out of love but as a sacrifice to one who claims she can cure his affliction.
Snatching Nina from her job, Reddix takes her on a journey to the stars that ends in disaster.
Now, marooned on a strange planet they will have to learn to work together in order to survive.
Can Nina forgive Reddix’s attack and gain his trust enough to heal him… or will his fate remain forever Shadowed?
Evangeline Anderson is a registered MRI tech who would rather be writing. And yes, she is nerdy enough to have a bumper sticker that says “I’d rather be writing.” Honk if you see her! She is thirty-something and lives in Florida with a husband, a son, and two cats. She had been writing erotic fiction for her own gratification for a number of years before it occurred to her to try and get paid for it. To her delight, she found that it was actually possible to get money for having a dirty mind and she has been writing paranormal and Sci-fi erotica steadily ever since.
Main characters:Reddix and Nina Type of Kindred bonding: Touch Kindred with RTS (Reversed Touch Syndrome)
Reddix is suffering by Reversed Touch Syndrome. He feels what others are feeling and he suffers greatly. The answer to his suffering is Nina. Nina shares dreams with him without knowing him. Reddix does not want to bond with her. Because of his condition he cannot really bond to anybody. He only want to take her to a witch and get her blood. Before Nina understands what is going on, she is being abducted, taken to another planet and fallen in love with a man who can not love her back. A great enjoyable cute continuation to the series. I loved it - although there was not a really great villain in the story.
I wanted to wait I finished the book I was reading before going through this book, but I can't ! And it worthed the reading. Only 2 nights to finish it, and now I want to read the next book. I'm sure it's about Maggie and Therron ^^ I already love her ^^
Well, I would have given 4.5 stars but it's not possible, so I gave 5 ^^ Nina is more than cute, they are well matched with Reddix, but I'm a little desappointed by the fact he believes the swamp witch to easily, and also that he is too gorgeous for my kind of heros.
I liked it but I liked the previous two others a little bit more. I wish we saw Mehoo-Jimmy, Nina's adopted grandmother, in the second half of the book too. Also, what happened to Nina wanting to be a physician's assistant?? Seems like she either was just doing that for a job or she just gave up her dream? I feel like the author totally forgot about that small detail.
Also, why was it just mentioned about Nina's ex...who later turned out to be ex-fiancé...and then this was never talked about again? I doubt Reddix even knew about Nina's ex-fiancé.
There was this one scene where Reddix was all over her, and Nina didn't want it, so she shocked him with the pain collar. Another reviewer said that the hero seemed rapey and that's exactly what that scene felt like! I didn't like it or feel it was necessary at all.
So in the previous books, the overarching conflict of the series was first the Scourge but they're gone now, then the Hoard and Draven which got resolved in the previous book, so the only conflict I can think of is the havoc Xandra's son is going to wreck on the Touch Kindred as revenge?? I mean I don't really mind there not being some overarching series conflict because each book stands on its own, but still...
Reddix, a Touch Kindred, never expected to be the position of being his planet's Overlord, until Saber found his mate Lissa with the result of being "Exiled" for having an inappropriate relationship with his 'clan sister' forfeiting the chance to be the Overlord.
The problem is that Reddix has a disability, RTS (Reverse Touch Syndrome), which makes it impossible to mate with a female of his planet and increasingly painful and debilitating to function as the Overlord. He makes an attempt to convince Saber to return home and assume his rightful place without Lissa only to find out Saber won't even consider it. The only option left is to make a deal with the devil, or more specifically the 'Swamp Witch', who tells him he can be helped by the blood of an Earth healer and he needs to bring this 'healer' to her where she will obtain her blood for the potion that will keep his RTS under control.
With no option available Reddix goes to Earth and kidnaps Nina from her home in Florida. On the way back they crash land on an unknown planet where it will take the both of them to survive and have any possibility of being rescued.
When they're finally rescued by the Kindred Reddix needs to decide if his obligation and duty as the Overlord is worth surrendering Nina to the swamp witch when he discovers Nina's healing skills are more powerful than anyone realized.
Love this series and the different Kindred aliens featured in each installment in this series. I'm not so sure that the new evil bad element is strong enough to keep the series viable but do love the adult content scenes enough not to worry overmuch. :D
Nina is having a pretty normal day when the almost seven foot tall Kindred walks in and kidnaps her. He does seem familiar though, but he can’t possibly be the man she has been dreaming about; the man who scares and arouses her at the same time. Reddix, a Touch Kindred, needs a the blood of a woman with a pure heart and healing hands if he is going to cure his Reverse Touch Syndrome (RTS), which means he can feel everyone’s emotions physically on his skin. But he never expects the Earth woman to capture his heart and his lust with her strength and compassion. But without the cure her blood will provide he will die, but can he sacrifice the only woman who he could ever love?
Another Kindred book! I love this series, with each new book I am treated to a smorgasbord of alien delights, I have had fangs, double cock, sexy twins and now I have Reddix, the gorgeous Touch Kindred who knows the best use for his tongue, amongst other things.
This book doesn’t actually differ that much from the rest of the Brides of Kindred series, but it mixture of fun, angst and sexy is a winner for me so I don’t mind that it is slightly repetitious with its story line. What I’m reading for is the sexy alien and watching him woo the Earth girl he can life bond with and Reddix and Nina didn’t disappoint, they were great together. Her compassion soothed the rough edges of his personality and experiences and in return he loved the hell out of her.
What I also like about this series is that you get to have a little catch up with the previous characters and see them welcoming the next couple into the fold lending these books the cozy sense of coming home as you greet old and new friends.
If you haven’t started this series and you want something with humour, steamy alien sex and lots of fun, then you need to give Brides of Kindred a go, it will leave you with a smile on your face and a longing to be abducted by the alien man of your dreams!
Shadowed follows closely after book 7 exiled, Reddix our hero/anti hero is an old friend of Saber's from book 7. Nina is new to the series so we see the kindred from yet another pair of fresh eyes, so this one would be easy to read with out having read the previous 7.
Lets start with what I like:
* General world building was steady and I still love that there are things Evangeline can write about that will test the boundaries of our imaginations. She is one of the only writer's I know that can come up with some of the most bizarre things and write them in such a way they almost seem almost plausible.
*Nina was strong minded and though she had a few touch and go moments, where I thought she may break like most other heroines, she didn't. She took things in her stride and carried on which was nice considering how much i disliked the female lead in exiled.
*Main plot was a little on the thin side here and there. It could have done with a dash more action and a little less "call the sympathy brigade" but It moved along quickly and I didn't feel tempted skip any pages, so thats always a plus
* I really enjoy the interaction with previous characters and I absolutely god damn loved the little set up for the next book, I cannot wait, I have a feeling its going to be one of the best in the series
Dislikes:
* MINOR SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!
One plot device I detest was used towards the end here and it really frustrates me when this is used and here it is. Reddix pushes Nina away because he fears in the future he will hurt her. Come on now guys, if she is the one, she can handle the truth. So pull up those big boy pants and tell her the truth, none of this I lied and broke your heart to protect you bullshit.
*Reddix, its difficult to explain but it was like he was more up and down than a yoyo, I couldn't decided whether I wanted to hug him or squeeze the life out of him
Final thoughts, a solid addition to the series but not quite as good as the first 4, worth reading if your a fan of the series and want a little warm up for the next installment.
Reddix and Nina. Kind of a 'beauty and the beast' tale because Reddix has been suffering and alone for so long, he has become an uncaring beast. He cannot stand another's touch and can't even stand being in the same room as other people because their emotions effect him like pain. Now, forced to become the new overlord when his cousin defects, he cannot avoid others. Gradually he is becoming sicker and sicker with no hope in sight. He decides to turn to the evil swamp witch for a cure. The swamp witch asks for something he really shouldn't agree to... but he does. And now Nina's life is in danger. But Nina isn't your regular girl even if she is human. It's kinda cheesy, and the story is rather convoluted and too long. But it was pretty entertaining. There are obvious plot devices galore, yet I didn't mind. Though I admit to skimming here and there. Especially the parts dealing with Saber and Lissa,... just wasn't interested in their romance and would have rather just focused on Reddix and Nina's story. I realize both stories are important to the plot, but the author didn't need to divide my attention that much. And you know, skimming those parts didn't detract from the plot at all. Some might call this Science Fiction, but since it doesn't have any science. I just call it an Alien Romance.
The next book in the Kindred series. When Lissa and Saber found the courage to bond in the last book, that meant that Reddix came to be next in line to lead the Touch Kindred´s planet. Suffering from RTS - Reverted Touch Syndrom, this was his worst nightmare come to life. He´s feeling everything anyone around him is feeling, and has become a recluse hiding under a hood just to get away from any and everyone. The witch in the swamp has a solution for him, find a human on Earth, the one he´s been dreaming of, and return with her to the swamp. Once she´s sacrificed blood, he´ll be free of this crippling condition. What Reddix never anticipated was the feelings he´d grow for this woman, and how Nina could effect him. Nina´s having a bad day, being abducted, flown through an instable wormhole and now crash landing on a strange planet. What is this big man wanting and how can she escape? Smutty fluff, suspense but this couple didn´t really grab me as the former couples have. Great read, though.
I really enjoyed this installment of the Brides of the Kindred...although Reddix was a big jerk at the beginning. Thankfully, he grew on my after a while and I just loved all his dirty talk.
Reddix is desperate; he is burdened with the responsibility of leading his people or risking civil war. He feels trapped by his parents telling him he must continue the blood line and marry a woman he does not love. But worst of all is his medical condition (RTS - reverse touch syndrome) where he literally feels people's emotions. He can't handle being touched, pitied or sexually desired...it just drives him nuts. And the condition is worsening.
So when he goes to the swamp witch to find a cure, he's willing to do just about anything. Even kidnapping a helpless human girl.
Reddix has reversed touch so he feels everyone but not Nina's. They end up in a weird stressful situation that ends up bringing them closer together. I really like that this book didn't have a bad guy. It was about Saber and Lissa relationship causing Reddix to be the new leader and all the complications that comes with it. Nina is a really good under pressure and I really like that even when kidnapped and crashed but still pulled up her big girl panties and just made best of situation. I struggled with maggie, can she really be that clumsy and accident prone but hopefully she develops better in the next books. Great story which leaves a taster at end for next book.
Not my favourite of the series, but still an entertaining read nonetheless. Not as much smutty goodness in this one either, and I wasn't a super fan of either of the main characters... but everyone else and the alien worlds more than make up for that.
It was a little bit better then ok, but not much. So much of the story just seemed forced. I didn't fall in love with the characters like I did with the other book...it got cookie-cutter toward the end. Over all, if I was to rank all of the Kindered books, this one would come in dead last.
I read Shadowed feeling a sense of enjoyment through most of it. Even the kidnapping at the beginning didn't bother me, because Reddex at least wasn't trying to have sex with Nina (at least not at first) and his characterization and condition was such, that he ended up depending and leaning on Nina quite a bit in the story, which I thought was nice. Nina came across as a gentle and patient soul, and a mature one as well. She wasn't girlish in the way that Nadiah and Lissa were in their books. She had some life experience and wasn't afraid to be strong for Reddex. It was clear that she felt compassion and curiosity about him very early on, so the whole kidnapping thing went over as smooth as something like being thrown over the shoulder of a giant emotionally-neurotic Kindred possibly could. Reddex was kind of refreshing simply because HE DID NOT WANT TO BE TOUCHED. Desperate because he was supposedly inheriting Saber's job as the leader of their clan (due to Saber being in an "incestuous" relationship with Lissa), Reddex goes to an exiled swamp witch on his planet who tells him she can mute all of the emotions he feels with the blood of a woman with healing hands. Just so happens that he's dream sharing with some Earth chick, who of course is Nina, and she's a massage therapist. But of course they crash land on a weird planet and bond (but not BOND because Reddex can't bond a bride to him due to his condition) and then he can't give her up. Also he discovers Nina mutes others' emotions when she's touching Reddex, and he can't feel hers, so after that, he definitely tries (a little too hard at times) to get into her pants. Ah well, it is erotica. Still, the sexy scenes were not as hot as they normally are and I did find myself skimming them a bit at times. Maybe it's just that it's all getting a little old for me. And then....then I got to the last part of the book, which is basically Kat's bonding ceremony. It was very very disappointing to me that the story and solution to the issues between Nina and Reddex, was wrapped up with There will be more books coming I'm sure, especially since she sets up another couple of heroines for their stories in this one. But I think this was the final one for me, and I'll be passing on those.
First I want to say that I received a complimentary review copy from the author. However I have purchased each of the other seven books in this series. I have also bought and read several others, here on Amazon.com. In total I have read at least 15 of Evangeline Anderson's books. Others, including "Wishful Thinking (Swann Sisters Chronicles)" and "Forbidden" are highly recommended.
One of the first things that strikes me different about this book compared to others in the series is the cover. The heroine, Nina, is looking straight out at me, the reader. She is daring me to be a voyeur and become part of her story. Nina is a very pragmatic and self-assured heroine, at least in the first half of the book. She is observant, capable and adaptive to new situations. The hero, Reddix, is a mixture of several other of Anderson's characters. I found his self-loathing a bit too heavy at times, but since he was basically a social outcast from his fellow Touch Kindred, his feelings are understandable.
We are also introduced to a new "big bad," a swamp witch with ex-issues and demonspawn.
I have to say the Touch Kindred are my least favorite of all the Kindred races. I liked the first original three books best, with the Beast and Twin Kindred my favorite guys. I feel their planets and societies are more interesting, as well as their "endowments." I want to see more of them.
Since this is erotic fiction, the intimate scenes are plentiful and descriptive. However I feel that Anderson is writing completely different when she does the sex scenes, because her writing style and vernacular changes considerably. Also after reading more than a dozen books some scenes have become a bit formulaic. (Finding different uses for bonding fruit seems to be a bit tiring and overused now.)
In the latter 25 percent of the book, when our protagonists get separated and we are back on the mother ship, the story starts to unravel a bit. A new character is introduced, which is usually the heroine of the next book. The storyline gets crowded. As in too many characters from the universe are interacting in everyone's business, they are all best friends, and I did not feel that the ending was tidy enough or wrapped up strong enough for the characters I invested in. Gone was the strong character Nina that I was introduced to in the beginning. She became really unsure of herself and what made her unique about her Native American heritage just seemed to fade away and not come back.
I really enjoyed reading this book, my mind was engaged and my imagination ran wild with the hot intimate scenes. Recommended.
Since I started this series, once I finished one book I've already jumped into the next one, even before I've written the review on the previous book. Not this time. I think I'm getting disillusioned. Now that the AllFather and the Hoard have been either defeated or went away, what do the Kindred Warriors do all day? They're supposed to be fighting in battles, but all they do is sit around working on their spaceships. I think I'm missing the tension of having a villain in the storyline. It's getting boring and repetitious having almost the exact same dialogue from new Kindred / Human couple to the next. I've downloaded the 9th book, Chained, and I'm not sure I'll be starting it right away. Maybe I need some time away from the series. Shadowed is about Reddix who's a Touch Kindred but his abilities are inverted. Nina is a Native American who is the only person that can cure him. Reddix kidnaps her and their adventure begins. I did enjoy Nina's character. She was strong and brave in the situations she found herself in. But, once again, when it comes to oral sex, they all have this virgin stupidity about them. Really? I wasn't much of a fan of Reddix. I felt he was too selfish, even knowing how painful his life was living with everyone's emotions bombarding his physical body. I think what really got me questioning the whole concept of this series, is what the witch told Reddix. That without the bonding ability they shared with their Human wives, they would never be able to co-exist. So, basically, the Human women are being enslaved just for the purpose of reproduction. Sure, they share some form of love, but it's also enhanced by the mating scent that the Kindred Warriors emit. So, I’m in a real quandary about the whole Kindred Bonding sex thing. The world-building and character development are just as good, but I’m still running across proofreading errors that make me flinch every time I see one. As much as I hate to, I have to give this book a 3 feather review. It just didn’t cut it for me, and it was disappointing. Hopefully, when I get ready for book 9, it will be better. Not holding my breath on that one.
She did it again, I love this series, its an absolute escape! Yes, EA did it again, this is erotic escapism at its best. Nothing cannot happen in this series, there are no boundaries and its all seamlessly stitched together with a solid sense of humour and and a bittersweet journey through space and romance. I loved this book about Nina and Reddix, mainly because I really liked both characters and the plot was non-original but cute. Made me want to sit down and read the lot from the beginning, which is now 8 good books about interesting characters, the women and their kindred lovers. What a world to imagine and sustain, EA, surprises me everytime with a new couple and their unique story. I was more than glad that there was not an uber-evil villain in this book that we had to spend pages on, in fact the book happily for me concentrated on Reddix and Nina, just the way I want. Also the story is satisyingly long and overall, one more great read from this excellent and prolific author.
What can I say about Evangeline's Kindred series except the men are so HOT I'm surprised the pages didn't burn my hands right up! (My hands might have been busy elsewhere LOL!) Ok, I really love these books with a passion. Can't help myself. Each new story is better than the last. The characters always engage me, there's a great storyline, secondary characters are right there too, HOT SEX, HEA, etc...holy mackerel what more could you want? I loved Nina & Reddix. Can you say "explore me!" Great Job Ms. Anderson! Thanks.
I'm a huge fan of this series, but I have to say this is not my favorite as far as the storyline goes. Reddix and Nina are great characters, and their interactions and how their relationship unfolds is really interesting and their chemistry is off the charts, it's the thread in the storyline that connects it to the series that just lacked umfph for me. Still can't wait to read the next book...and the next.
Really this is a 3.5 for me. That's because I struggled with the beginning a bit. About halfway through I started to get into it. The whole forced to do sexual acts to save their lives etc. as the way they really start their relationships is a bit tired for me. However, overall it was a good story and you can't help but eventually fall for Reddix and root for them!
I made it to about 65%, but I know I'm never going back to it. It was 4/5 stars, but I got bored and don't see the point in reading the ending. I'm sure it'll just be the ARC for the next instalment.
Even though Nina had some TSTL tendencies, I didn't hate her. I liked her care of Reddix, who is basically like a wounded feral animal. And it was much better than the previous book.
I do really enjoy this series, even though they are longer than I'd like, but Anderson is doing some really crazy gymnastics (pun intended) to get the main characters to get physical. Each couple has it a bit different, and I appreciate her inventiveness, but now after the first few books everyone seems to have a "bonding fruit" moment which makes this series even sillier.
In this installment, Reddix is introduced. He is a Touch Kindred from Tarsia who has "Reverse Touch Syndrome' which means he can feel everyone around him's feelings and cannot bond with a mate. He's spent 10 years since he got RTS trying to avoid others and keeping his face hidden (oh, he's also gorgeous, but that is a curse since everyone is attracted to him).
In desperation, Reddix goes to the witch who says if he brings her a specific human that she can fix his RTS. So he goes out and kidnaps Nina, a part Native American healer/massage therapist.
I did like Reddix and Nina, and their relationship. What I didn't like about this story was the silly reasons why they needed to touch every second and get up close and personal to "survive". Also Reddix just kept on saying how he couldn't be what Nina wanted and she would leave him in the future so he was "helping" by pushing her away. Very silly.
I am still interested in this world and the characters, so I'll keep reading them, but only while I can still get them free off of Enki ;)
>I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 8th in the Brides of the Kindred series and ends in an HEA for the couple. The story also introduces the next story line. Reddix is a Touch Kindred that can’t stand to be touched. He has extreme empathic abilities that cause him to feel sick. He is very handsome and tries to cover himself to avoid feeling lust directed towards him. The descriptions of how he physically feels the feeling of others is very vivid and really makes one feel sorry for Reddix. Reddix makes a deal with a witch to try and cure his disability. > Nina is the human Reddix must kidnap and bring to the witch to be cured. Reddix quickly finds out the when Nina touches him, he is immediately buffered from the onslaught of other’s feelings. There is quite a bit of humor in this story as Nina turns the table on Reddix and attempts to keep him under control with a weird shock collar. Of course, they fall for each other, but one is never sure what Reddix will choose – Nina or a cure?
>This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this book 5 stars. There were some unanswered questions regarding the cure and why the witch needed Nina’s blood in particular, but the story still worked and was sexy and entertaining.
