Grad student and cocktail waitress Evelyn Merkholtz has plenty to deal with. Too much to deal with. So, when her runaway best friend calls with a mysterious and urgent request to join her in Scotland, she is secretly more than happy to drop everything and oblige.
She's faced with an ancient curse, an adorably hunky villager, and a super hot (but possibly murderous), Highland warrior from the 18th century - and realizes that getting burned at the stake is a really bad way to get out of writing her thesis.
BOOK #5 in Carmen-Downloads-20-Free-Ebooks-Onto-Her-Kindle-Day. More widely known as March 3rd, 2015.
Too boring. I can't finish it. DNF at 55%.
I got this for free on my Kindle by just browsing through Amazon, they were having a special. This was entry #5 in Carmen-Downloads-20-Free-Ebooks-Onto-Her-Kindle-Day. More widely known as March 3rd, 2015.
Lame, so slow and the heroines were just whiny and annoying. It picked up towards the end but definitely not worth buying. I did not like this on at all.
This book was bad. I feel like the author was trying to do a variation on the classic romance novel, which I guess is laudable, but it just didn't work. She gives us an alpha couple in Piper and the hot time-lost stud that could have propelled the story forward... and then doesn't show us anything about them, mentioning them only peripherally and preferring to focus on the beta couple who has zero chemistry and negative interesting-ness. I believe Piper and Time Stud get their own spotlight in book 2 of this series, but ugh, who can make it to book 2? I could barely struggle through book 1.
The premise of this story makes no sense. Why would Piper want Evie to come all the way to Scotland to help her? Because she reads time-travel romances? REALLY? THAT is Piper's rationale? On what planet does that remotely make sense? Like, if I read a lot of romance novels about sexy firemen, does that qualify me to BE a fireman? (firewoman?) How about if I watch House or Grey's Anatomy, can I now perform surgery on people? Cuz if it's just that simple, I could use a better paycheck.
Characterization is negligible; we're told that Evie is "surprisingly" hot-- cuz everyone knows you're not supposed to be smart AND pretty, don't you know attractive people are dumb as bricks and smart people are hideous?-- and that she's a graduate student, and are left to our own devices to scrape up a picture of her personality from that. We're not given any scenes showing us her character, her values, anything, really. She's about as fleshed out as a department store mannequin.
Same with her love interest, what's-his-name. We're told he's Scottish and owns a bookstore. That's it. YAWN. Pacing is sluggish, dialogue fails to excite, blocking is nonexistant. Setting is not bad! So that's a plus. The only plus. And mosdef not enough to sustain this clunker. Thank god I got it for free.
I think the only reason I was attracted to this book was because it was obviously about a big Scottish guy in a kilt (just like me :) and it may have been a freebie - I can't remember. I do recall thinking it would be a quick 'short flight' read - some easy reading to pass the time for a couple of hours! But it turned out to be sooooo much more than that! I adored the setting and really warmed to the characters. There was just enough history, time travel, magic and suspense in there to keep me intrigued. I loved it - couldn't put it down. As soon as I had finished this one I lined up the next three books in the series on my Kindle. I'm now on book four! Thank you Cassidy. Very well written and thoroughly enjoyable. Mike
I'm a bit past 50% through the book now and it's finally starting to pick up, but I wanted to mention the first half of the book now before I forget.
Nothing really happens the entire first half of the book. Like seriously. We learn that Evelyn works at a strip club to put herself through grad school. (I could have done without the strip club scene, though it wasn't raunchy.) Then she travels to Scotland to help her best friend Piper who inherited her like great-grandmother's estate and her billions, who is having an problem so dire that she flies her friend out the next day without even letting her make arrangements with her work and schooling, essentially. And then when she gets there, they don't really do anything.
It's hard to tell how much time is passing, but considering there is a displaced highlander in Piper's castle who may or may not be a murderer, they spend a hell of a lot of time eating, sleeping, talking about how exhausted they are, crying for no reason I could distinguish (and I'm sort of a cry baby, but emotions just didn't seem high AT ALL when the ladies take turns having cry fests), and sitting around reading irrelevant documents. Oh and discussing how time travel books could maybe have been true stories the authors published as fiction. Because that's the real reason Evelyn was brought over: because she's an "expert" in time travel books... cuz that's a good enough reason to bring her into the story... That doesn't seem like a contrived reason to have her meet Sam AT ALL!
Oh, and Piper seems to be falling in love with the highlander (who I was still suspicious was a murderer, remember) , Lachlan, but because this takes place off screen, the reader can't really grasp the emotion of the romance... which I really WANT to, because I love highlanders, but I can't due to the way it's written. It just sort of pops up randomly and suddenly with no explanation. If it's meant to be a double love story, we need scenes from Evelyn's AND Piper's points of view!!
O... K.... Finished the book today... Did you know that the way to determine whether or not a guy is The One is to ask him if he's ever been to a strip club? If he says "no," he's The One! Because apparently these guys are so rare... Yeah, I don't even know. I agree that step clubs are awful and I'd never have dreamed of marrying a guy who went to those places, but that's your ONLY criterion? Except that when she "confesses" about her job, you can tell he thinks it's sexy she might be a stripper... And I don't see how that's any better... Whatever! Oh, and Evelyn and Sam go back in time to sleep together... That was pretty much the only purpose as far as I could tell...
And Piper sleeps with Lachlan (with no objection from him AT ALL ... Though if he somehow magically loves her, he should have at least given a token's protest about propriety) after he killed someone with an axe and is covered in blood... And not even shower sex... Sex outside in the freezing cold on the ground behind a shrubbery. Mmmm... Sexy! Freezing cold outdoor bloody sex has always been a favorite of mine, too! *barfs* I still don't even understand how they've managed to fall in love in the first place. Seems awfully random to me!
Overall the writing was just so meh with the emphasis in all the wrong places (sleeping, eating, etc, see above and not on important things like relationship development or a good reason why any of this crap was happening in the first place...). If Ms. Cayman had an editor, she needs to find a new one who isn't related to her and who will give actual honest feedback about writing, pacing, plot, and character development and not just, "Squeeeee! I love Lachlan! He's soooo hawt!"
Also I read a few spoilers about future books. Wow. SOOOOO NOT INTERESTED!!!
EDITED: BECAUSE I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT THIS WAS MY 1,000TH BOOK FOR 2018. BOOYAAAH GRANDMA! Okay, I'm done and going back to reading.
Lost Highlander was one of those books I picked to read listen to because of a certain reading challenge. It was an okay kind of audio.. but I feel like not a lot happened in it? In it you will meet Piper and Evie. I still don't really understand the whole reasoning of why Piper wanted Evie to drop everything and travel to Scotland.. but eh, at least those two found some swoon-worthy scottish hunks. Speaking of those men, Lachlan and Sam, ugh.. so swoon-worthy!
I did mention there was some romance in this book.. but a lot of it happened behind the scenes.. which kind of ticked me off. Then there was the random ass smut scene.. that I don't really know how to explain. I did, however, LOVE their accents. Oh man, a man with accent...
Other than the romance and the little mystery about Piper's place.. the audio went by fairly quickly. The ending was an okay kind of cliffhanger.. but I don't really want to dive into the next book unless I have to (at this point). It wasn't bad.. but it also wants anything exciting.
Let me start by stating that yes the concept of time travel is in the book but it's not like the typical style where within the first couple of chapters the main character is either swept forward or backward through time and you read through their struggles and adapting to the new environment. This story is about a family, a castle in Scotland and their legacy. The castle is inherited by an American who does not know about her family heritage. While she is there a Highlander mysteriously shows up, lost at what to do, so she has her best friend come to help. The best friend is who you follow through the story. The majority of the book is spent trying to figure out how and why he is here and how to get him back. During this other events unfold, others inadvertently get swept back in time,etc....It was a very well written story, though I do not understand why the author gave the opening character the job she did...waitress is fine just don't know why it had to be at a strip club.
The Lost Highlander was better than I expected. I was curious about this series as every time I looked up my books on Amazon, I get the message 'customers who bought this item also bought' and Cassidy Cayman's books come up. Now at first I just thought these were some trashy romance and bad history yet the Lost Highlander surpassed my expectations. I love a good timetravel story and this one didnt dissapoint. The story was well developed and kept me interested all the way through and I was very envious of Piper, to inherit a large fortune and a scottish castle full of antiques complete with its own library, not too mention the full wine cellar and secret passages, (don't get me started)Again all I can say is this was thoroughly enjoyable way better than I thought, maybe it was the book covers that threw me, well maybe the other book covers.
After reading a few of the reviews for Lost Highlander...I was a little nervous about reading it. Most people didn't have many positive things to say about it...other than that it was free. However, it being free is why I decided I would give it a shot even with the bad reviews...and I'm honestly very glad that I did.
This was my first Cassidy Cayman novel and I was surprised by the witty writing style that flawlessly mixed with a serious romance and mystery. I was thrilled by the paranormal aspect of the book and loved the fact that the story line kept me on my toes and had me reading well into the night.
I will agree with a few of the reviewers in saying that the beginning of the book was a tad bit slow...however, I felt like it served it's purpose. By the time the "action" hit, I had a good understanding of the characters and who they were. The characters are each well developed and realistic and the way that they interact with one another is wonderful. Once things picked up and the "action" began...well lets just say that Lost Highlander was a book that I didn't want to put down! There were so many twists and turns and bumps along the way that I never knew for sure what was going to happen next.
The "time travel" aspect of the book was awesome! It wasn't too far fetched but at the same time it had some twists that kept it from being predictable. I thought it was really neat that the book touches on a variety of time periods through things found in the estate. I have never read a ton of time travel books, however I will say that the Dr. Who moments were definitely a plus for me hehe, and I honestly wasn't sure how I was going to feel about it. After reading, I am torn. I really liked the story line and I was totally into it...heck I was tearing up several times when people were being ripped away from those that they loved...but at the same time my mind starts to over think things sometimes.
The romance aspect of the book was interesting. We got the budding relationship between Evie and Sam as well as Lochlan and Piper. I loved that it didn't just stick with one persons POV the whole way through...however, I would have enjoyed it even more had we gotten a taste of the men's POVs from time to time. Lost Highlander has a touch of sex (two scenes to be exact...one for each couple)...it wasn't risque or overly done...just a little bit steamy. I did wonder how things would end up...especially seeing as neither couple used protection...or maybe the author just didn't write that realistic part in...who knows! Overall, the sex scenes were sweet and fit the story perfectly. I just couldn't see some raunchy play by play scene fitting into this book.
I thought that Cassidy Cayman did a decent job of making her time travel book unique and making me want to purchase the next one in the series. I honestly want to go one-click it on Amazon right now just to find out what happens next! UGH...cliff hangers are evil! hehe Now to just get my hands on Reunited!
I like books about time travel, particularly when they are set in Scotland, so this book seemed like a sure bet but my initial reaction to the first 30% or so of the book was not all that positive. Evelyn, one f the four main characters, was introduced in the first few pages as a waitress working at a bar with exotic dancers to pay her student loans while she works on her masters. Within the first few pages she in her thoughts referred to her "ass" three times. I found it a rather off-putting introduction.
When her friend Piper calls from Scotland begging Evelyn to immediately drop everything and fly to Scotland, Evelyn does just that. Piper has inherited a large estate and is now rich beyond her dreams, but..... is just about falling apart because of some problem that she is hesitant to tell Evelyn about. Evelyn arrives at the airport without even an address or phone number to contact (just a bit unbelievable) but is met by Sam,who owns a local bookstore. Exhausted on her arrival, Evelyn attempts to sleep but ends up wandering through the castle until she discovers a very large, very scary man with a blood-stained kilt.
As I said, the first 30% of the book was not the quickest going and I really wasn't sure a) who was the heroine - Evelyn, Piper or both and b) who was the hero - Sam or Lachlan (the kilted man) . Fortunately things did improve as the book progressed and it was interesting as the four of them tried to figure out just how Lachlan had arrived from the early 1700's and how they would go about getting him back where he belonged. The adventures that happen along the way are interesting and the romances that developed kept me entertained. It is the first book in a series and for the right price I would probably read more. I'd give this one 3.5 stars.
Okay, nobody was even threatened with being burned at the stake let alone with the action taking place with any character. Evie's love interest is not the Lost Highlander. Both of these facts make the blurb deceptive.
Evie is a cocktail waitress in a strip club. Her best friend is Piper (sorry, I really hate that name). Piper is in Scotland, settling an inheritance from her grandmother, who she never knew.
In this massive inheritance is a castle that is in a state of disrepair. Piper decides she wants to turn it into a tourist attraction but there is a problem; there is a highlander in the tower from another time who needs to get back to his own time. She calls Evie to help but doesn't tell her just what the problem is.
The story was slow at the beginning and it took awhile to get it moving. I didn't feel or see much chemistry between any of the characters, even at the end but hang in there. It really is a pretty good story.
There's magic, mayhem, and a lot of excitement once Piper, Evie, and Sam start realizing what has to be done to get Lachlan back to his own time. At one point in the story, I was crying.
As I said, the story is quite good. However, it does need another trip to the editor. The errors weren't overwhelming nor did they detract from the reading experience but they still need attention to get a five-star review.
I have to say that I am always up for a sexy highland story, but this one was far beyond my expectations. I loved the modern day meets eighteenth century and all the mystery keeps the story pulling the reader along. You're wondering what is going to happen and it happens at a pretty rapid pace. Piper inherits an estate and vast fortune in Scotland. Piper's friend Evelyn is pulled into the story by Piper and there is immediately this feeling of impending doom. Once Evie is in Scotland, her mind reels at the far fetched story her friend is sharing and it takes seeing a burly Highlander weilding an ax to change her mind.
What is this man doing here? How did he get from his time to theirs? It is a very wild ride and one that continues. I had to buy the second book of course! I'm hooked. If you like adventure, time travel and Highlanders, this is for you!
I wanted to like this really I did but it was just too boring. Well at least until the final 75 pages or so when something finally happened. But then the ending was lame and totally ruined any progress made.
There was absolutely no character development and everyone seemed like cardboard cutouts. The premise is that Piper is totally overwhelmed in Scotland and really really needs her BFF to come help her out. Yet when Evelyn arrives, they do nothing but eat, sleep and read documents/books found in the library trying to figure out how to send the highlander back. Apparently Evelyn is an expect in time travel since she read so many romance novels.
The fact that Piper jumps Lachlan after he murders someone is rather off putting and not even remotely romantic. This came completely out of left field and just seemed wrong.
This was a free book & for the price it was ok. The first half of the story is very slow, skimmed over ALOT of it. The middle to end is where it became so much better. More intriguing, romance mystery and then it ends. Bam done. This story had potential but feel short, no descriptions of Scotland, no in depth character building, not ALOT of romance 2 very short interludes between Evie and Sam then Piper & Lachlan. Really not worth mentioning. I love historical time travel romance. To me this just didn't cut it, really this is classified as romance?. I won't read the rest of these books. This story just wasn't original and without strong characters not worth my time. 1.5 stars for being a book set in Scotland & having a highlanders in it.
Cliffhangers can be good... and they can be bad... and then they can be neither, except they're really annoying. And the cliffhanger at the end of this book is rather annoying.
But the characters are fun, and so is the plot - once it gets going. It felt like a slow burn to keep my interest in the beginning. But once it moves, it moves!
I enjoyed time mystery/time-travel element. Some "new" mixed in with some "old" - the idea of a blood sacrifice and traveling during certain seasons of the year.
But this book truly has a couple of hunky Highlanders - one from the past and one in the present. Both are equally yummy.
I actually really enjoyed this book. It had everything; great drama, suspense, murder, mayhem and not to mention gorgeous men with accents and lets not forget time travel. I thought this book might be good upon starting the pages but it turned out to be better than I expected. I knew going in this was a series but I really wasn't on the hook for the next installment until the very end.. So now I am a little sick and really need to read the next book. Of course like many other people I have a list a mile long of books I have been trying to read so book two may have to wait. This is a book I would definitely recommend.
A freebie on Amazon, it was a nice fun and fast read. I think I would have liked some deeper characterization, especially with Piper and Lochlan - apparently, the most interesting parts of their relationship happened behind the scenes. In romances, I really like to see the build-up to people falling for each other. Was it more than just a dazzling smile and sexy body? If not, then it loses something for me. I gave this four stars because it did hook me into the story and I wanted to know what happened next, which for a bit of escapism is just what I'm looking for. I'm curious about the next novel and think I'll go ahead and have a look.
I really couldn't get into the mystery plot line of how Lachlan traveled from 1729 to the present time. His character didn't move me in anyway. Matter of fact non of the characters held my attention. Their seems to be romance brewing between Evelyn and Sam and Piper and Lachlan. Whose story is this about? Where is the romance? The ending was a cliff hanger. So many unanswered questions in this story. I am glad it was a Freebie. I would have been upset if I had paid for this book.
A fine story that keeps the reader enthralled and waiting for the next freaky incident to happen. As the story wound down though, I was disappointed at one thing that happened and no sooner did I complain to the walls than the author apparently heard me and fixed the problem to allow for just the ending I wanted. Well, at least the ending that is the beginning of the next installment! Good job Cassidy Cayman. Bring on the next one!
I really wanted to like this book. But after the lost highlander killed the 'bad' time traveling highland....and then Piper was so turned on she needed to have sex with him, in the garden, that very second. I just gave up. I skimmed the last little bit to see if they actually made it back to the correct time period and that was a hot mess too. This was just full of stereotypes and the writing wasn't good.
This was one of those books that seems to drag on but when it's done you want more. This didnt really read as a romance and felt more like a mystery novel to me. I enjoyed that different layers of the book and think that book two would be worth getting.
This was an ok story with a cliff-hangerish ending leading to book 2 - the main story line does come to a close though, and then re-opens. It was very, very reminiscent to the Outlander Series.
The narrator did an alright job. There were some weird pronunciations but that could just be regional. Her character differences were nice, I always knew what character was doing the speaking, which is nice.
This book was strange for me. Looking at the cover, title and overall design of the book, one would think it is your typical highland romance novel but this book is not.
The book starts out in the states, when the friend of Evelyn calls and begs her to come to Scotland. From there the story is about the castle in Scotland and the mysteries that surround it. There is a bit of romance but not what I thought it would be like. Evelyn falls in love with a local, modern highlander, Sam. Piper, her fried, inherited an old mansion and somehow an ancient highlander appears. The book covers the relationships between couples, if you will.
The book was somewhat entertaining. To be honest, I was bored and skimmed several sections of the book. Other things I didn't care for where, the change in perception was abrupt. At first, the book was through the eyes of Evelyn but then the writing changes to third person. I had to go back and re-read a paragraph because things were explained strangely. Phrases the characters used sounded wrong. For example, "over there for good three years ago, right?" Using trooper instead of good sport. Some words like a, or, etc. were missing making sections strange sounding. Lastly, the housekeeper at the mansion seemed to change ages. I thought she was an older woman who had been an employee at the home for a long time. Later in the book, Mellie, was described as a girl.
The book ends with a huge cliffhanger so beware of this. I don't think I will be continuing on in this series. Lost Highlander wasn't very well written and interesting enough for me to continue on.
Lost Highlander by Cassidy Clayman Review by RTAnnie
When grad student Evelyn, a Hoochie Mama's strip club cocktail waitress answers a dear friends desperate call, she travels to the beautiful Highlands of Scotland where she's met by the coldest weather on the earth and the hottest, sexier than hell hunk of a purebred Scotsman, Sam.
Her dear friend Piper, a free spirited slip of an American girl inherits a Scottish manor/village castle from her great grandmother, Fenella, whom she's never met. Not ever in her wildest dreams did she expect it to include a hot as hell, true bonified, ax bearing Scottish warrior, clear down to the kilt. From the past, the 1700s past.
The three friends are ensconced in a frantic search to find out how their lost highlander got there and how to get him back despite Piper's growing attraction to the blood stained house guest, Lachlan Fergusson.
With Evie's love for time travel romance books they set out determined to set history back on track and get Lachlan back to his time without rearranging the past especially since he's buried in the family crypt.
So many questions, so little time! Does Lachlan find his way home? Does Piper fall in love with her Highlander? What happens to the hot as hell Sam?
I'll give you this much, you'll definitely want more and you can't wait to read the second book, 'Reunited', in this series.
This book grabbed me from the beginning and falling in love with its real to life characters I couldn't put the tablet down.
