Fate brought this book to me while I was recovering from a broken leg.....and lucky me! Mary Buckham's book was just what I needed to fill my bed bound hours and days and provide me an exhilarating escape.
Alex, part witch and part shaman, is from a family of non-humans including a father a brothers who are shifters. She is part of the Invisible Recruits team and that alliance is allowing her a way out of her life sentence to prison.....great backstory provided in more detail in the book. The book opens with her and her team mates involved in a mission that nearly costs them all their lives and kick starts this book into high gear from the start - and that's when I am hooked.
Add to the mix her fathers strange involvement in her prison sentence, her brother being held captive and used against his will, at risk to his own life and Alex's - and the plot thickens while the action ramps up. No great ride would be complete without some serious chemistry between our heroine and a mysterious man, and this case it's Bran, a powerful and sexy warlock who may be on her side or his own, only time will tell. The chemistry between them is electric.
I have to say I haven't ventured into this genre before and have always been a reader of historical novels, biographies and travel books and I was really excited to have enjoyed this book so much. Also, to be fair, I have to say I hadn't read the first in this series and wasn't sure I could enjoy it as much without having read the first, but to my happy surprise didn't find that a problem either. I enjoyed this book so much I'm going back to read the first and will be waiting patiently for the next in the series due out in short order......
This second book is all action from the start, as Alex desperately tries to rescue her brother. What ratchets up the suspense is that Alex isn't ever sure who, out of her very small pool of allies, is really on her side. Everyone has their own agenda, and everyone has more power than her, so she desperately looks for ways to motivate people to help her. When her father steps into the picture, it becomes clear that a lifetime of not dealing with Alex's powers and hermitizing himself away from focus of political power has caused him to make some pretty bad decisions that have profound effects on Alex's life. The intrigue is layered and complex...and unrelenting. There were times when I was so worried for Van that I had to stop reading and placate my nerves with a snack and a beverage. The ending has me salivating for the next book. When, Ms. Buckham? When????
Book 1 left off on a great cliffhanger. Alex Noziack - part witch part shaman is part of the invisible recruits. She trying to work off her sentence of life in prison by working for IR and at the same time find her missing brother, try not to fall for Bran (or get killed by him). Alex is a great character. Her sarcastic comments and honesty is why i will buy every book in this series. That and the hilarious and dysfunctional relationships she has with the other girls in IR....oh and for more BRAN! If you want a fresh new urban fantasy that is funny and action packed...grab this book now! Mary Buckham has a winner with this great series!
Another great book in the series, more mystery & action than the first. It definitely concentrated on the action part of the book as there was no true romance in this book (other than a few heated glances). The story continued on from the first book with Alex's time running out to save her shifter brother from the bad guys.. the mystery still is who are the bad guys & what are they planning? There is a huge twist at the end on the book which had me screaming....
I look forward to reading more in the series & more by this author.
Weres, Shifters and one sexy Warlock …. Oh My! Invisible Power by Mary Buckham delivers action, conflict, the power of friendship and the importance of trust all in one fun thrill-ride which ends on a cliff-hanger, leaving the reader clamoring to get their hands on Invisible Fate to be released Fall 2013.
This is such an awesome book... Can't wait for the next one... I just wish Bran would get his act together and tell Alex how he feels... It is driving me crazy...
This is the second book in the Invisible Recruits series, and is all action from the start, with Alex desperately trying to rescue her brother. It becomes crystal clear in this installment of the series that Alex isn't ever sure who, out of her very small pool of allies, is really on her side. Everyone has their own agenda, and everyone seemingly has more power than her, except when she trusts a little voice deep inside, which ends up having mixed results.
This novel focuses a bit more on Alex's relationship with her father and with Van, making it painfully obvious that family is paramount to the Noziaks, not just Alex's preoccupation of being a Noziak. However, given her uncertainty with her powers, and lack of social life, it's normal that the one thing she identifies herself as is her family, a Noziak. In her mind, she's not really a witch or a shaman given she can't use her powers well, and she doesn't have a social circle outside of the IR crowd, and they have not yet begun to really be a team enough for her to identify as an Invisible Recruit.
When we meet her father, it is to learn he has spent a lifetime not dealing with Alex's powers due to his wife's betrayal, leaving Alex woefully unprepared for the tasks she now faces. He has also been so withdrawn from the focus of political power in the preternatural community that is causes him to be unaware of actions of the other Council Members that will have profound effects on Alex's life. Furthermore, a secret he has kept will throw Alex's belief in him, and therefore herself, into a tail spin with possible disastrous consequences.
Bran is the fourth perspective that we are given in the book. Here we are able to see into his mind and how he feels. I found this amusing given that he wants to shake her as much as kiss her. That he has a hard time fighting his feelings for her I find endearing and lends me to be less harsh on him than I would be if we were only given Alex's perspective.
We meet a host of other characters and are introduced to the larger threat behind Van's disappearance. Through Van's perspective we learn that the drug tested by Dominique in Invisible Magic is being utilized by a secret organization is that is out to expose the preternatural people living among humans.
This ends on a cliffhanger, so be forewarned!! Make sure you have book 3 waiting in the wings!!!
Book Two of the INVISIBLE RECRUITS series takes up where Book One left off: with Alex Noziak, witch/shaman-in-training, fighting off preternatural creatures ranging from weres, warlocks and faes to trolls, demons and other assorted beasties. And all while trying to save her brother's life — before he is forced to commit unspeakable crimes, possibly changing the balance of power between humans and non-humans.
Being a self-avowed "jump-first-and-learn-to-swim-later, act-now-ask-forgiveness-later" type, Alex continues to test the boundaries of her powers, often finding things backfiring at the worst possible moment.
Raised, with her four shifter brothers, by a shaman father wary of witchery, Alex treads a fine line every day between the human world and the world of magic. Smart-mouthed and fiercely independent, she hates being forced to do anything, particularly when it's her on-again/off-again, hunky warlock boyfriend doing the manipulating.
In Book Two, she finds herself distanced from her Invisible Recruits teammates, once again having to answer for her part in a death—or in this case, multiple deaths—and forced to rely on her quick wit and survival instincts, even as her personal world spirals downward amidst questions of her father's love and loyalty. And his part in her life prison sentence.
Mary Buckham has created a fantasy realm within the daily world familiar to us all, drawing in her readers with complex plotting, masterful suspense, and artful writing. She skillfully weaves Alex's first-person POV with other characters' third-person POVs to amp tension and proximity of the action, allowing readers to see, smell, taste and feel in real time. From the sweet tang of fresh croissants at a Parisian café to the damp stench of moldy cell walls, you're there.
No spoilers here, but the ending will have you anxiously awaiting the arrival Book Three. Hopefully very soon.
As much as I enjoyed the first book of the series, I'll admit to being really disappointed in this one. Not only were the villains obvious obvious, but the story simply ended-- no wrap up of any major threads. Some might call it a cliffhanger, I call it an incomplete book. What happened to developing the IR team? This was a big part of the draw in the first books. I felt like I was running in place the whole book-- absolutely no advancement of the major story line-- what little forward momentum there was could have been wrapped up in a few chapters. Done with the series.
Just can't put it away and now anxiously awaiting the next one in the series. The characters draw you in and won't let you go leaving you with wanting more. Alex is such an incredible, well developed character making you feel with her along the way, hoping intensely that things will work out well for her. I love the mix of paranormal and romance. It has an incredible balance between the two, not making one outshine the other.
This is the second in the series and i have to say it is as good if not better than the first. I cannot wait for the next in the series. If you havent started this series yet, i don't know what you are waiting for!.. its a can't miss. Mary Buckham did not disapoint!..
Wait! What!? *gasp* You can't end a book like that! O.M.G. I'm glad I have the next one to pick up soon! AMAZING read! Mary Buckham can really suck you in and not let you go. This story will sink its teeth into you!
