One twin text that I picked for this book is Magic Tree House: Dolphins at Daybreak by Mary Pope Osborne. I decided on this book because it depicts a story where Jack and Annie are exploring the ocean when they run into some life threatening danger, an octopus and a shark. But just when all hope seems lost, two dolphins save the day! This book is an ideal pair to go with Dolphins. The Magic Tree House book would allow students to read a fun and delighting story about how dolphins come to the rescue and Dolphins would allow students to read authentic facts about dolphins, including about the different kinds of dolphins, what they eat, how they grow up, and how their senses behave. This allows students to apply accurate facts to fiction stories.
Did you know killer whales are considered to be a dolphin? At least this book says so. Good book and informative. Did you also know that porpoise is a verb? It means to travel through water by making short leaps into the air.
Like other titles in the Discover More series, this title presents basic information on dolphins for beginning readers. Topics include the dolphin’s anatomy, life cycle, habitats and feeding habits. It features facts presented in easy text and in varied fonts and colors to draw in even the most reluctant reader. Fact boxes are accompanied by awesome photographs of dolphins in action. A special bonus is the downloadable companion book that is filled with dolphin rescue stories. Back matter includes a glossary and index. Since dolphins are a favorite topic with youngsters, this slick title is a must for school libraries. It would also be a good choice for special populations. One drawback is the board book-like pages that make it a bit unwieldy to handle.
Ideal as an introduction to this always-fascinating species, this book is filled with large photographs and engaging text. Readers learn about some of the characteristics of dolphins, including how they care for their young and move about in pods, and also how they work together to hunt for fish. I had no idea that they sometimes work together to herd a school of fish together, and then dine on the ones that are on the outside of the herd. The book also discusses some of the threats to dolphins' survival and mentions pink dolphins that live in the Amazon River.
This is the Spanish language edition of Dolphins from the Discover More series- a photo filled look at dolphin species, habits and habitat. The large text size and thick pages make this book young child friendly. The photographs are clear crisp and fascinating. Text is divided among main paragraphs, boxes and bubbles leaving the reading to choose what to read. Recommended for Spanish language library collections.
I just love the Discover More Series for middle school and was delighted to get a look at this one aimed at a younger audience. It's beautifully designed, crammed with full-color photographs, well-organized and simply explained. The accompanying ebook is worth a look at as well. It contains stories, additional information and some cute games. Solid addition to the animal shelf.
