Meditations for Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself

Rate this book
This mental-rehearsal CD set, the four-week guided-meditation companion program to Dr. Joe Dispenza’s book Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, is designed to move you from the analytical Beta brain-wave state to the state of Alpha, and develop your ability to sustain coherent brain-wave patterns. By placing your awareness on different parts of your body “in space” and on “the space around your body,” as instructed by Dr. Joe, you are altering your brain so that you enter into the operating system of your subconscious mind—where unwanted habits and programs exist. The objective is to learn to stay present and make meditation a skill. It is from this new place that you will begin to make the changes in your life that you desire!

Dr Joe Dispenza is an international lecturer, researcher, corporate consultant, author, and educator who has been invited to speak in more than 33 countries on six continents. As a lecturer and educator, he is driven by the conviction that each of us has the potential for greatness and unlimited abilities. In his easy-to-understand, encouraging, and compassionate style, he has educated thousands of people, detailing how they can rewire their brains and recondition their bodies to make lasting changes.

In addition to offering a variety of online courses and teleclasses, he has personally taught three-day Progressive Workshops, five-day Advanced Workshops, and seven-day Week Long Advanced Retreats in the U.S. and abroad. Starting in 2018, his workshops became week-long offerings, and the content of the progressive workshops became available online.

Dr. Joe is also a faculty member at Quantum University in Honolulu, Hawaii; the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies in Rhinebeck, New York; and Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. He’s also an invited chair of the research committee at Life University in Atlanta, Georgia.

As a researcher, Dr. Joe’s passion can be found at the intersection of the latest findings from the fields of neuroscience, epigenetics, and quantum physics to explore the science behind spontaneous remissions. He uses that knowledge to help people heal themselves of illnesses, chronic conditions, and even terminal diseases so they can enjoy a more fulfilled and happy life, as well as evolve their consciousness. At his advanced workshops around the world, he has partnered with other scientists to perform extensive research on the effects of meditation, including epigenetic testing, brain mapping with electroencephalograms (EEGs), and individual energy field testing with a gas discharge visualization (GDV) machine. His research also includes measuring both heart coherence with HeartMath monitors and the energy present in the workshop environment before, during, and after events with a GDV Sputnik sensor.

As a corporate consultant, Dr. Joe gives on-site lectures and workshops for businesses and corporations interested in using neuroscientific principles to boost employees’ creativity, innovation, productivity, and more. His corporate program also includes private coaching for upper management. Dr. Joe has personally trained and certified a group of more than 70 corporate trainers who teach his model of transformation to companies around the world. He also recently began certifying independent coaches to use his model of change with their own clients.

Dr. Joe received a B.S. from Evergreen State College and his doctor of chiropractic degree from Life University, where he graduated with honors. His postgraduate training covered neurology, neuroscience, brain function and chemistry, cellular biology, memory formation, and aging and longevity. For more information go to www.drjoedispenza.com

With each meditation track at a little bit over an hour each, these meditations are a bit of an investment in time. Dr. Dispenza tries to break them into manageable sections with a "bell" sound (which is a hilarious short sounding ring that goes like "donk" instead of the drawn out, relaxing "riiiiiiiing" that I'm used to hearing on meditation CDs) but once I was in the middle of the track, I found myself reluctant to turn it off so I just went through the whole meditation in one sitting. Dr. Dispenza also draws out the S sound in every word that contains one within the meditation so when he says "feel your armssssssss" the S seems to go on forever. It was incredibly distracting at first, but I became accustomed to his style after awhile.

Other than the funny bell sound and the long S's, this is an excellent guided meditation set for relaxation and conscious change. If you enjoyed Meditations for Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, I'd recommend that you listen to Eben Alexander's Seeking Heaven and Anita Moorjani's Deep Meditation for Healing.

I love how this book is set up...BUT, there is a major problem when the author refers to pictures that would have been in the book to help explain what he's talking about....it's like the audiobook should have come with a pdf of the tables and charts and pictures he refers to in most chapters! I wonder if they ever do that? Very informative book and very science-oriented understanding of how meditation does what it does. Some may call it a little geeky, but it works for me....the science behind our brainwaves and a great explanation of how we are more "no-thing" than "some-thing", allowing us connect with the Universal Energy to move forward in creating the unique, authentic and inspired life we want. Fits well with how Colette Baron-Reid explains connecting with Spirit to create and live the life you deserve.

Much of this book didn't resonate with me though it did have a fair share of interesting ideas. ... My review contains a summary full of spoilers.

- He discussed a study about retrospective prayer. People prayed for a list of people's names who were in the hospital; however, these individuals had been in the hospital 10-15 years prior to the prayers. Those individuals who were prayed for did get better. This suggests that prayer has an eternal effect (past, present, and future).

- He gave plenty of examples of people who believed in something as if it had already happened (Gandhi, Martin Luther King Junior, etc.) and their dream came true.

- He also suggested that the body and brain memorize certain internal states in a phase of habituation and that our feelings, internal feelings, are a chemical record of our past experiences. We can shift from negative stressful feelings, internal states, and chemical records with effort.

About here is where the book lost me. He posited that when we strip away our outer images, the resulting self is who we truly are. He goes into stuff about brain waves here ... This is along the metaphor that we are who we are 'inside'. Yet aren't we exactly who we are all the time? Your emotions, feelings, outer self, inner self, habits, these are all who you really are, all the time, all of it, different components of the same person.

You can go change the component of the self who exists when you strip away the image you project to others. You can do that with meditation, but honestly, you are always you.

This is the accompanying meditations for the book, Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself.

I have enjoyed these meditations. Not only do you feel calm when listening, but Joe adds a command that you can use to jolt yourself out of habitual negative thinking. Joe may have developed this due to his background in hypnosis. When you notice these thoughts, you say the word: "Change".

Joe cured severe back issues without medications or surgery within a few months. He has since devoted himself to exploring how to use the brain to unleash the power of the subconscious to overcome physical pain and other hurdles.

I got through two thirds of this book and gave up. There are a lot of good parts that encourage readers to not let past events define who they are... But there is also a lot of junk science that is hard to overcome.

Initial distrust occurred during the start when it referenced a study about current-time thought/prayer/mediation affecting past events. Final straw was the lottery winner that won on the first try because she believed she was not poor... and her winnings were just enough to pay her debts.

Listened to this on audible. Enjoyed but sadly didn't finish because it got a bit too whimsical for my taste. The book starts as a meditative introduction and then looks deeper to a theory of intrinsic energy of all things. Part science, part hippy-juju. While interesting to ponder, the theories Dispenza entertains are very abstract. I humbly resign from judging the validity of this idea though.

Transformative, especially when one takes the time to do the suggested exercises.

I was going to give this a 1, not because the meditations themselves are bad, but because they're not structured at all like the book they're meant to accompany. Then I realised that they are, but indirectly. Meditation 1 is weeks 1 and 2 in one. Meditation 2 is weeks 3 and 4. Meditation 3 is weeks 1 and 2 again, but with a different relaxation 'induction'. Meditation 4 is the same as meditation 2 with different music. You really have to break out of your meditation to jump from the induction to whichever part of the other meditations you're meant to be working on. This may be better on a CD version, but the audiobook version I'm using is a struggle.

This is not a book, but meditations to who you want to become. I listen to this guided meditation almost every day.
It’s best to read the book first then use this afterwards.

This book goes a bit over the top into physics and detail, but it was an interesting book overall.

Great guided meditation. However, you must have at least an hour to perform this and learn how to focus in order to really gain the most from it

I did enjoy the explanations in this book and the practical applications to meditate. I purchased the audio downloads. They were a bit slow for me. Good, not great.
