Following the same formula as Phaidon's miniature "Art Book" and "Photography Book", the mini version of "The Movie Book" brings together 500 people from around the world who have made a landmark contribution to the medium of film. From the earliest pioneers to the stars of today, the entries cover the entire industry, including actors and directors, costume designers and make-up artists, special-effects wizards and animators, producers and major movie moguls. Arranged alphabetically, they create engaging and thought-provoking Marcello Mastroianni sits next to Louis B. Mayer while Sidney Poitier rubs shoulders with Roman Polanski. Each entry is illustrated by a film still, photograph or cinematic sequence that shows a key aspect of that person's work. An accompanying text reveals the significance of each name within the history of film and includes essential biographical information. In addition, there is a comprehensive cross-referencing system and glossary to guide the reader through the complexities of the motion-picture industry, together with an international guide to film festivals and museums. A feature exclusive to the mini version is a supplementary index of film titles, actors, actresses and directors, enabling the user to track down all the additional references to and illustrations of their favourite films and personalities.

Bu kitabı Rekin Teksoy'u ev ziyaretine giderken, öncesinde uğradığım bir kitapçıdan almıştım. İçinde Claudia Cardinale'nin olmayışından, şablon gereği görsel üstünde kümelenmiş kısa bilgilerin ne kadar doyurucu olduğuna ve bu kitabı imzalamasının etik olup olmayacağına varana kadar epey bir sohbet konusu etmiştik, böyle de güzel bir anısı vardır. Max Factor'den Busby Berkeley'e, Edith Head'den Jack Cardiff'e, Jack Pierce'den Ray Harryhausen'e, Walt Disney'den Lassie'ye, sinema tarihinin mihenk taşları ve renkli simalarıyla tanışacağınız ve dil bariyerinin kesinlikle bir sorun teşkil etmediği, enfes bir kaynak. Pahalı muadilleri yerine kesinlikle peşine düşebilirsiniz.

Estou consciente que este não é um livro, à partida, para uma leitura exaustiva, mas como admiradora do formato lista, não pude resistir, iniciando, à vontade de o terminar e cruzar todos os termos de A a Z. Muito porque é um mundo - o do cinema - me fascina mas sei pouco dele, muito porque procuro sempre modos de como ter uma ideia mais global e mais completa da sétima arte. Não leiam este livro de fio a pavio, a não ser que tenham fascínio similar por tópicos ordenados, como eu. É um bom volume a ter na prateleira, no entanto, para consultas, sempre que necessário.

The Movie Book is not a comprehensive guide to everyone ever associated with the movie industry. What it is, however, is a selection of people associated with the cinema. Each page has a small amount of information about the person, but prominently features a large photo from a movie. The pictures from the movies are what makes the book interesting and fun. If you are looking for an encyclopedic index, this isn't for you. If I was going to be picky, there are some names that should have been included and others that could have been left out.
