A new rival appears for Sakuragi--a troubled street fighting teen with a soft heart for romance. Perhaps he and Sakuragi are more alike than they think. However, you know what they say, the people that we like the least tend to resemble us. Oh, and Sakuragi starts to get some respect from the other members of both his team and the rival team that they play against. This is still as funny as ever.
It wasn't that I had full hopes with Shohoku winning the game. And it wasn't that it's disappointed either. I think, it's best for Sakuragi to feel losing first so his ego can be soften even if it's just in the tiniest bit. Also, the Jordan shoes scene is killing me!! It was so hilarious, I love dorky Sakuragi so much!!
I just realized while reading, that Inoue always develops beastly, wild heroes in his manga series (Sakuragi, Takezo, Nomiya.) I dunno, I just love it!!
Last minute extravaganza of the match really puts the readers at the edge of their seat, while the aftermath deals with character development and build up for the next things to come.
A climactic end to the Shohoku/Ryonan practice match, and the introduction of another quick-tempered bad boy teammate to match up against Sakuragi! The ending to the match is exciting and there's a lot of emotion put into their failures and successes. It went by quicker than I thought it would, as the game reaches its final two minutes I couldn't put it down and started tearing through the pages excited to see how it ends. And the new teammate is a fun addition to the cast, it's good to see someone who's a bit more like Sakuragi so we have someone to compare him to that isn't an outright opposite/contrast.
So, the games ends and what an ending. It was a incredible match and i wasn't expecting to enjoy it the way i did. I saw the anime YEARS ago (i might rewatch it after finishig the manga) and i didn't know how the "game" would pan out in a manga (i'm still fairly new to the manga universe and this is the first sports manga i dive into). Everything was perfect.
There's a new arc starting here and it's one of my favourites from the anime, can't wait.
*This review is for the series as a whole with 4.5 out of 5 stars*
I’ve posted 2 articles about Slam Dunk early this year so I’m sure you guys already have an idea how I adore this series. The anime series was incredible but its manga counterpart is beyond incredible, it was AHA-mazing!
I’m not a sporty kind of girl and I don’t think I’ll be anytime soon, but I think what’s great about reading books and watching shows is that you learn and (kind of) experience a lot of things you don’t normally do in real life. And because of Slam Dunk, I learn to appreciate sports stories and eventually love them.
When I started reading this manga, it felt so nostalgic. It’s not so different in the anime so while reading it, I keep on picturing out all those episodes which I think made my reading experience even more enjoyable.
Slam Dunk showcases a great team work. What I learn to appreciate about sports stories/shows is that it’ll give you a lot of lessons about what it means to be a great sportsman. And Slam Dunk absolutely slammed dunk that part!
I usually watch the anime series first before reading its manga counterpart and as for Slam Dunk, I’ve watched it quite a number of times already and I don’t think I’ll ever stop watching it, *wink. Even after watching the anime, I can still feel the tension, the suspense, and the excitement while reading this manga.
As you can read on its title, this manga centered around the sports basketball and through it weaved a really good story everyone of us will enjoy and appreciate whether you’re into sports or not. Another thing I love about reading manga is that it will never ceased to make you laugh with its funny scenes and Slam Dunk had it big time! I lost count how many times I laughed my heart out reading this masterpiece.
The drawings were really so good too plus those facial expressions were epic, especially Sakuragi’s, haha.
This story has a main character but I love that it didn’t just center around him but the author also gave its other characters a chance to share their own story. I love the character development as well especially Sakuragi’s.
And speaking of Sakuragi, I didn’t eventually like him at first. He’s definitely trouble and I didn’t quite appreciate his annoying antics and his excessive bragging. But all throughout the story, you can’t definitely help it but like his character. As I’ve said above, Sakuragi’s character development is definitely one you should see. From being this good for nothing delinquent, he became a true sportsman. I just absolutely love his improvement not just in basketball but eventually as a person. It’s definitely hard for me to explain but I just LOVE Sakuragi. Ofcourse he can still be an airhead sometimes but I can see now that it’s one of the things that makes him quite likeable, haha.
Slam Dunk has some pretty amazing group of characters and as I’ve said in this article, they come in varieties so I’m sure a lot of readers can find some characters they can relate and love.
The anime series left off the national championship and let me tell you guys, it was already good as it is. It was full of intense scenes with a right blend of humor but the national championship parts were sooooooo good I can still feel its intensity even after finishing this manga. Actually, I cried pretty hard when they won! You should definitely read it!!!
Although the ending felt short which ofcourse makes you want to ask for more, I guess it was still a pretty good and hopeful ending, not just for team Shohoku but for the other teams as well. Besides, after that intense match with Sannoh, I don’t think Slam Dunk failed me.
So if you’re looking for an intense sports shonen manga to read, Slam Dunk should be on top of your list.
Slam Dunk, Vol. 6 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (45–53) of the on-going manga series.
The match between Shohoku and Ryonan High Schools concludes. In the last minute of the match, Kaede Rukawa and Hanamichi Sakuragi accidentally pass the ball to each other and both score, which put their team in the lead. However, in the last twenty seconds Akira Sendoh scores two points all by himself, and the match ends with Ryonan's victory. Although Shohoku loses, they impress the audience as they gave Ryonan, one of the best teams in the prefecture, a close game.
The next day, Sakuragi's gang encounter Ryota Miyagi, who gets rejected by a girl, as he is about to return to the basketball team. Miyagi is attacked by a group of delinquents led by a student named Hisashi Mitsui, but they lose his attention when Miyagi sees Sakuragi walking with Ayako, the manager of the team, who Miyagi likes. Thinking they are a couple, Miyagi attacks Sakuragi, but both accidentally knock Hisashi Mitsui out. Miyagi and Sakuragi are easily stopped by Ayako and Haruko Akagi, but when Miyagi appears in the basketball gym, Sakuragi challenges him to a basketball game.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue. For the most part, I really liked the direction of the narrative. It is a tad predictable – concerning the outcome of the basketball game, I had a feeling that they wouldn't win, but make it a close game. The dynamics of the teams is still being sort out – especially for Hanamichi Sakuragi.
All in all, Slam Dunk, Vol. 6 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.
This sixth volume starts one of the most interesting arcs (at least in the character development) in the series. But first it ends the exhibition game in classical fashion (of which I will say no more). And then it has a page-filler of Hanamichi and Haruko going basketball shoes' shopping.
Before Miyagi and Mitsui appear...
Of course, we all knew Inoue was going to beef up the team, and this volume 'teases' us with one new member, Miyagi, which seems to also have problems with the 'yankis' of the institute. His introduction and his first meeting with Hanamichi is funny, as their first interactions in the basketball court. However, Inoue still puts a little bit too much violence in the proceedings, and it sends the message that violence has a place or the 'heroes' are allowed a little bit too much... (shounen manga for you).
It is a transition volume, though, and as it is, it keeps things interesting, but doesn't offer too much.
Might be my favorite volume so far content-wise, and once again the cover is as amazing as the last one but now with striking blues instead of yellows. Hanamichi's unrequited love for Haruko works in both motivating him to become a better person and basketballer. Slowly but surely gaining the respect of others around him(though it would do him a big favor if he just took a chill pill and played the game correctly).
While the introduction of a new character into the team that we never knew about that was injured and couldn't come to school, is quite similar to how Kuroko's Basketball introduced their character. Except for the reason this character was hospitalized wasn't due to an injury relating to basketball but instead just being a punk and beating up people that messed with him. lol.
Don't know what it is about this series but six volumes in and I'm still enjoying it very much. Satisfying ending to the game, addition of a new character is keeping the plot fresh, and I'm still rooting for our obnoxious Basketball-man Genius!
Great volume that brought an end to a long cliffhanger (for me anyways). Not only was it the end to a very good match in the series (Shohoku vs Ryonan) but it was also the funniest volume yet. The volume had some really funny moments that absolutely made it for me this time around :D
One of the more iconic of sports manga. It's the first series where I actually both read the manga and watched the anime. It has flawed protagonists, growing up pains, colourful characters, and beautiful meaningful relationships, all neatly wrapped around the context of college basketball.
The End of the match between Shohoku and Ryonan was amazing, the new character: Ryota is a well build character and I am waiting to see more from him .
At the time of this review, I have read volumes 1-17 back-to-back. As always, I will try to only focus on the current review.
With that we conclude the Ryonan vs. Shohoku game. To compare it with a manga that I know, I would say this is like the second time Karasuno faced Bluecastle. Sakuragi had the same reaction as Hinata about the end of the game. After the end of the game, the Grease vibes are coming back. It's like if the Scorpions and T-Birds clashes were a little bit more confrontational. Mito was giving me Kenickie vibes. On page 136, we get this line from Ayako "Just what our team needs...one more PROBLEM CHILD. swell!" I do feel bad for Captain Akagi, Kogure, and Ayako their team is collecting problem children, which is comparable to Haikyuu. Poor Daichi has to contend with Nishinoya, Tanaka, Kageyama, and Hinata. I will talk more about that in a later volume.
I was super stoked to find out that my main school library had a small collection of Slam Dunks, all the way up to the one volume that is still checked out of my classroom library: Volume 6.
So, I finally got to read the mini pre-season game ending, which ended exactly the way I thought it should. I can see why this Manga is so popular. This is storytelling at its best (in Manga form). I enjoy how the author—Takehiko Inoue—selects details nicely, always considering how much to reveal and where to leave the audience at the end of each volume.
Volume 6 finishes the pre-season game against Ryonan, who seems to be Shohoku’s main rival, and then transitions to a new conflict, introducing another trouble player to the Slam Dunk lineup: Ryota Miyagi
The match with Ryonan was heated, but the result was a defeat. Because he fights against a strong school, he loses due to the difference in ability. It's good not to win here. Hanamichi also decided to shoot the common people, and it was interesting because he was playing a game that could not be thought of as a practice game. And when I thought about returning to everyday life, there was another problem child in the basketball club. Its name is Miyagi Ryota. He also got into a fight early and was sent to the hospital, and he likes Ayako. It feels like a flower road. Mitsui's defect was also noticed, and the atmosphere was turbulent, but what happened?
This volume was another great one, just seeing the match end and how Sakuragi gets his moment and then the expected result because we won't see the win yet, as its common in sports manga and I really liked how it showed that the team has to go a long way but despite it all it was a good match overall and then seeing Sakuragi's reaction to it and then the introduction of "Miyagi Ryouta" and his back story and face off vs Sakuragi is the best lmao, I feel like he is gonna end up becoming another favorite character! Seriously awesome volume!!

I really enjoyed this volume. I actually thought that Shohoku was going to win. But I still love the way the match ended, it had me hooked until the end. The lost gives us some great character development. I love how Sakuragi got his first pair of Jordans since I really love those shoes myself. We also get introduced to another “ problem child “. He seems like an interesting character and I can’t wait to see more of him.
