کتاب متأسفانه اصلاً به پای معادل نروژی ش "دنیای سوفی" نمی رسید. هر چند خیلی از مطالبش جالب و جدید بود، ولی این همه اطلاعات رو در یه قالب مناسب نریخته بود.
موقع خوندن کتاب گوشی کنار دستم بود و صحبت از هر شیء و نماد و مکانی که می شد، فوری سرچ می کردم و عکس هاش رو می دیدم. بعضى از عكس ها رو گذاشتم.
اسم كتاب
اسم قهرمان اصلى كتاب "تئودور" است كه يعنى "خدا داد". تئو در زبان يونانى به معنى خداست. در نتيجه اسم كتاب "دنياى تئو" ايهام دارد: منظور هم دنياى تئودور است، و هم دنياى خدا، يعنى دنياى اديان. (اسم اصلى كتاب در فرانسه "سفر تئو" است، كه مناسب تر است، چون سير مفهوم خدا در زمان و اديان مختلف را بر مى رسد.)
كتاب در اين ايهام هم از كتاب دنياى سوفى تقليد كرده؛ "سوفى" هم اسم شخصيت اصلى كتاب است و هم در يونانى به معنى "حكمت" (يا فلسفه) است.
ضعف ها
١. بيشتر از آن كه مذاهب را معرفى كند، از آن ها انتقاد مى كرد. اين مخصوصاً وقتى آزارنده مى شد كه گاه يك انتقاد را ده بار، با لحنى تند تكرار مى كرد.
٢. گاه به جاى معرفى اديان به معرفى "فرهنگ" و "رسوم" يك كشور پرداخته بود، مثل روحيات تزارها و مردم روسيه، يا تاريخچه ى برده فروشى در افريقا. اين مطالب مربوط به مردم شناسى و جامعه شناسى و علوم ديگر است نه تاریخ ادیان.
٣. معرفى مذاهب به طرز شديداً گيج كننده اى آشفته و پراكنده بود. مثلاً معرفى بوديسم در چندين فصل پراكنده است، در بين مطالب اديان ديگر. در نتيجه نمى توان بعداً براى مطالعه ى بوديسم به كتاب رجوع كرد، چون مطالب پراكنده است. بر خلاف دنياى سوفى.
٤. در نهايت، ويراستارى بسيار بد كتاب بود، مثلاً ديالوگ ها گاهى بدون هيچ علامت جدا كننده اى، پشت سر هم در يك خط آمده بودند و آدم به هيچ وجه نمى توانست بفهمد از كجا گوينده عوض شده؟ و اشكالات بسيار ديگر.

It took me a really long time to read this book because 1. there is a LOT of information contained within the pages and 2. I was doing a million other things at the time.
For anyone interested in a broad history of world religions, Theo's Odyssey is a fantastic adventure that allows the reader to dip into different cultures and their customs, rites and historical markers. Like the first time I read 'Sophie's World', I will need to revisit Theo to let the whole book sink in a little further. Unlike 'Sophie's World' (and yes, I shouldn't compare...) the main characters of this tale were not especially likeable and at times I found Theo and his aunt to both embody a brattiness that had me wishing they would just get to the next religious thread so I didn't have to read of their whinging any longer.
But obvious bias for Jostein Gaarder aside, 'Theo's Odyssey' was a wonderful young adult book; informative, fun, and a true joy to read for both young and old.
Recommended.

This book was billed as a Sophie's world of spirituality, when we bought it so long ago that I could not remember. That's probably why we bought it, because we had enjoyed reading Sophie's world and thought we might enjoy this one, but I never got round to reading it.
Then with a cleanout and rearrangement of our bookshelves it came to light again, and I thought perhaps I'd better have another go at reading it.
The first chapter reminded me of why I had never got any further on the first attempt. Theo is a child. How old? About 6 or 7, I think. Later it turns out that he is 14. Describing a teenager as if he were a much younger child makes the character of the protagonist seem a bit shaky for a start. But this time I gritted my teeth and ploughed on. Theo does mature somewhat as the story progresses, but the first impression is off-putting.
Theo has a mysterious illness and though no one knows what it is, the prognosis is not good, so his rich (very rich) aunt decides to take him on a world tour, as a last fling before he dies, or a special treat in case he lives. But it's not your average world tour, it's a tour of different religions.
So it turns out to be a rather didactic book, teaching about different religions, and trying to sugar-coat the pill by wrapping it in a very thin and threadbare plot. Because the story needs to follow the syllabus, the plot line often seems very contrived.
It covers a fair variety of religions, and most of the way through it seems to lead one down the path of syncretism, showing how each religion incorporates elements of other religions, or has points of resemblance to other religions. This led me to expect that it would probably lead up to the most syncretistic religion of all, Baha'i, but somewhat surprisingly it doesn't. I can't recall that Baha'i is even mentioned once.
It covers most other major religious traditions -- Judaism, Christianity, Islam (and returns in later chapters to deal with different aspects of them). It covers Indian religions, including Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs. It deals with Tibetan and Japanese Buddhism, Shinto, Chinese religion (Taoism, Confuscianism and ancestor veneration), African traditional religion, Brazilian syncretism and even Mormons. But not Baha'i.
I couldn't help feeling that the treatment of some religions was rather distorted, with some trivial things included, and some important stuff left out.
Theo is half-Greek and so has an Orthodox grandmother (well, half-Orthodox, because she is syncretistic too, mixing Orthodoxy with faith in the Olympian gods). And the treatment of Orthodoxy is pretty skimpy, saying it is all about sorrow and suffering. There are detailed descriptions of rituals for some religions, at least three different rituals for the African traditional religions, but there is no comparable description of the rituals of Orthodox Christianity, not even a memorial service. All there is is a lot of guff about sorrow and suffering.
There seem to be similar gaps in the treatment of some of the other religions.
Sophie's world works better as a kind of fictionalised exploration of philosophy, but Theo's odyssey falls a bit flat. It doesn't really work as fiction, and it doesn't even succeed in its didactic purpose. When I was about the age of Theo in the book, I had a book called Faiths of many lands. It was a straightforward presentation, and I learned more from it than I did from this book.
At the same age I also read a work of fiction that told me far more about some religions than this one -- Kim by Rudyard Kipling. It was aimed at promoting British Imperialism, but it had a better story line, and presented religions more interestingly too.
I found Theo's odyssey rather tedious by comparison.

بالاخره تموم شد. برای من یه جاهاییش یه کمی خستهکننده بود، ولی فکر کنم گروه سنی مخاطبش راحتتر بخوننش. کار جالبی کرده بود و آشنایی با دین و آیینهای مختلف رو در قالب یه بازی و یه سفر طولانی آورده بود. یه آشنایی اولیه به خواننده میده و احتمالا بعدش بچهها کنجکاو میشن درباره بعضی چیزها بیشتر بدونن و میرن دنبال تحقیق. خود کتاب جالب بود ولی چیزی که برام خیلی عجیب بود ترجمهش بود. من چاپ اول این کتاب رو داشتم که ویرایش نشده بود! احتمالا مقابله هم نشده بوده و فکر میکنم برای چاپ کتاب خیلی عجله داشتن. یه جاهایی واقعا کتاب تبدیل به معما میشد. یه جاهایی به وضوح جا افتاده بود و مشخص بود آدم سر از وسط متن درآورده. امیدوارم این مشکل توی چاپهای بعدی حل شده باشه. به غیر از این، تقریبا متن به راحتی فهمیده میشد و مشکل خاصی برای خواننده نداشت.

Seine vermögende und etwas skurille Tante Marthe lädt ihn zu einer Weltreise ein, die ihn zu den Religionen der Welt führen soll, mit der Hoffnung dass ihr Neffe währenddessen geheilt wird.
Schwerpunkt dieses Buches ist eindeutig die Darstellung der unterschiedlichen Religionen und der Erfahrungen, die Theo damit während Gottesdiensten, Riten, Festen und ähnlichem macht. Die Menge an Fakten und Informationen, die hier präsentiert werden, ist zwar manchmal erschlagend, doch wer sich für dieses Thema interessiert, wird trotz der rund 700 Seiten keine Minute gelangweilt sein. Die Darstellung ist gut verständlich und insbesondere für Jugendliche (für die das Buch gedacht ist) und Unwissende sehr informativ. Nicht nur der aktuelle Stand der jeweiligen Religionen wird beschrieben sondern auch die Entstehung und Entwicklung bis hin zum Erscheinen dieses Buches (also Ende des letzten Jahrtausends). Die von manchen Leserinnen und Lesern genannte Oberflächlichkeit konnte ich nicht nachvollziehen: Vielleicht sollte man einfach im Auge behalten, für welche Zielgruppe dieses Buch geschrieben wurde. Und langatmig? Nun gut, wer kein Interesse für Religion aufbringt, dem sei dieses Buch auch nicht empfohlen, die Rahmenhandlung ist wirklich nur Nebensache.

je regrette de pas avoir connue le livre plus tôt ! en tout cas ça fait voyager, c’est pas mal dense, je le relirai sûrement un jour y’a plein de choses que j’ai déjà dû oublier mais j’en ai appris tant que bon ça renta. évidement on ne peut pas tout dire sur toutes les croyances du monde en un roman, et c’est certainement pas le but, mais on a les grandes lignes qui nous permettent de creuser plus loin et des focus qui éclairent bien sur des aspects bien précis sans faire un résumé style wikipedia d’une religion.
trop bien le format « débat » !! tout au long on nous donne différentes perspectives qui soulignent certaines problématiques, et qui abordent différentes questions de société, d’histoire, de politique et tout le tralala même si bon tout n’est plus tout à fait d’actualité… c’est peut-être aussi pour ça qu’on retrouve quantité de clichés mais franchement avec un peu de recul le récit est pas mal pour élargir ses horizons !

تقریبا یکسال بود که منتظر خوندن این کتاب بودم، و تصورم این بود که با کتابی شبیه دنیای سوفی قراره مواجه شم، اما اصلا اینطور نبود!
نمیدونم مشکل از خود کتاب بود، یا از مترجم،
اما به هر حال، به هیچ وجه لذت نبردم، به هیچ وجه...

I picked up this book because of its cover (in the German edition) reminded me of Sophie's World, and reading the title (Theo's Reise, meaning Theo's Voyage) I also guessed it would be about religion. Just like Sophie's name is in Philosophy, Theo's is in Theology.
Anyway, I am nonreligious but always fascinated by religions and mythology, so I was rather looking forward to reading this.
Unfortunately, it was quite a disappointment. I'm not sure if the team of translators is to blame of if the original French text is the same, but the writing was dull and nerve-wrecking at times. Theo is constantly exclaiming or murmering, why?! Can't he just talk like the 14-year old he is supposed to be? His behaviour gives me the feeling he is 8, at most.
The goal of the book is clearly to give the reader a lot of information on the religions of the world. Theo's mysterious illness and the voyage his aunt Marthe undertakes with him is just the framework. It's tried to do this via dialogues, with Theo asking his guides, but apparently the author thought it dull to place quotation marks everywhere, so at a point in each of these conversation an unknown, omniscient narrator just takes over the teaching.
It took me some trouble to get through the book and I'm afraid not much of the info on the lesser known religions stays with me. Conclusion: nice idea, poor execution.

Este libro lo logré terminar hasta el 3er intento, pero al igual que El mundo de Sofía, debería de ser un libro obligatorio, de cabecera. Entender (en especial en cuanto a la religión) nos brinda la oportunidad de respetar, y mejor aún, de encontrar cosas en común. Cada uno tiene derecho a elegir o a vivir mejor dicho (ya que muchas veces el lugar en el que naces es el que lo determina) el camino que va a seguir, pero eso no quiere decir que el destino sea diferente.
Además creo que este libro toca un punto muy importante al referirse a una enfermedad desconocida, causada por los secretos familiares. La mayoría de las veces la espiritualidad o la religión y la psicología no están tan alejadas como a ambas partes les gusta hacer creer.

I have a weird personal history with this book and for reasons I cannot explain I am very glad I got to read and finish it. It was by far not what I expected as an atheist adult, but child-me (a certainly more spiritual version of me) would have absolutely loved it.
That said, would I recommend it to my child? Probably not, as it comes with a spiritual agenda and lacks scientific thinking. Furthermore the book seems a bit old-fashioned now, as some descriptions of races and civilizations across the world, as well as sociopolitical events are a bit judged or distorted in a way that I do not necessarily agree with, while the historical role of white imperialism is severely understated and to one point even excused.
That said, would I recommend it to my child? Probably not, as it comes with a spiritual agenda and lacks scientific thinking. The storyline/writing/characters are pretty atrocious and Clement is pretty obviously not a specialist in religion. In general this book is really orientalist and gross

Très dense, intéressant mais difficile d'intégrer tout ce qu'il se dit. Je trouve aussi les personnages peu crédibles et un peu énervants par moment. Mais dans l'ensemble ça reste une lecture très intéressante

En este libro se nos narra un viaje alrededor de todo el mundo de un adolescente francés, al que le diagnostican una enfermedad incurable, junto con su tía Marthe que le va presentando el mundo de las religiones por medio de destacados personajes de las mismas, ya sean rabinos, cardenales o simplemente expertos. Teo vive hasta ese momento dentro de la mayor de las ignorancias respecto a lo que es el mundo de las religiones y poco a poco va descubriendo desde una perspectiva adolescente las diferencias pero también todo lo que tienen en común todas ellas, que es mucho más de lo que a simple vista parece.
Al poco de comenzar la lectura el libro me recordó a El mundo de Sofía, en el que usando una trama novelesca el autor, Jostein Gaarder realizaba un recorrido por la historia de la filosofía, pero sinceramente El viaje de Teo me ha parecido bastante más complicado. Difícil de seguir en algunos casos e incluso algo tedioso en algunos pasajes, dando la sensación de que quería abarcar demasiado y al final, cuando se hace esto, se termina apretando poco. Difícil, creo para los adolescentes, aunque pueda ser un libro destinado a ellos porque en muchas ocasiones se hace necesario conocer determinados conflictos,como el árabe-israelí.
Sin duda alguna lo que más me gustó de todo el libro fue el capítulo final donde Teo hace un resumen a su abuela de todo lo que ha aprendido y descubierto a lo largo de los nueve meses que dura su viaje, unas percepciones muy personales que me han resultado lo más fresco de toda la historia.
Antes de terminar, un detalle: Este libro me lo descargué desde Ebiblio de la Comunidad de Madrid, el servicio de préstamo online de libros electrónicos para los usuarios de la Red de Bibliotecas Públicas de las comunidades autónomas, y justo por eso no quiero dejar de señalar un punto que me ha parecido bastante preocupante, y es la mala, muy mala calidad de la edición del texto, algo que no se entiende en una editorial de reconocido prestigio como es Siruela. Desconozco si es un error puntual o es algo más serio, pero estoy seguro de que cualquier copia pirata del libro tendría una mejor calidad.
En este libro se nos narra un viaje alrededor de todo el mundo de un adolescente francés, al que le diagnostican una enfermedad incurable, junto con su tía Marthe que le va presentando el mundo de las religiones por medio de destacados personajes de las mismas, ya sean rabinos, cardenales o simplemente expertos. Teo vive hasta ese momento dentro de la mayor de las ignorancias respecto a lo que es el mundo de las religiones y poco a poco va descubriendo desde una perspectiva adolescente las diferencias pero también todo lo que tienen en común todas ellas, que es mucho más de lo que a simple vista parece.
Al poco de comenzar la lectura el libro me recordó a El mundo de Sofía, en el que usando una trama novelesca el autor, Jostein Gaarder realizaba un recorrido por la historia de la filosofía, pero sinceramente El viaje de Teo me ha parecido bastante más complicado. Difícil de seguir en algunos casos e incluso algo tedioso en algunos pasajes, dando la sensación de que quería abarcar demasiado y al final, cuando se hace esto, se termina apretando poco. Difícil, creo para los adolescentes, aunque pueda ser un libro destinado a ellos porque en muchas ocasiones se hace necesario conocer determinados conflictos,como el árabe-israelí.

Un recorrido novelizado por las religiones y creencias a lo largo del mundo. Usando de hilo conductor el viaje de un niño en busca de una cura espiritual a un mal desconocido de la mano de su tía rica y viajada, nos acercamos a religiones de todo tipo, no se encierra solo en las tres principales de occidente. En ese viaje no solo vemos la parte "didáctica", en la que se explican los sistemas de creencias, sino también un cierto crecimiento de los personajes aunque es el punto en el que más flojea y que le quita una estrella a la valoración
Como recorrido de las religiones es fascinante, te das cuenta de como conocías de varias pinceladas solamente y te ayuda a hacerte una imagen mucho más detallada y completa. La comparación entre ellas, la explicación de cada cultura... en pocas páginas logra condensar mucho, lo cual lleva también a que se tenga que leer despacio, asimilando las ideas. Este libro es el punto medio entre algo muy bueno y algo muy malo.
Por un lado, está la parte filosófica y teológica, que es impoluta. Estuve muy interesada en todo momento en conocer acerca de las religiones y ramas que presenta la obra, intrigada por qué descubriría en cada etapa del viaje, encantada con la manera de explicar estos temas a través de diálogos y tratar los distintos puntos de vista sobre cuestiones religiosas y políticas con discusiones en la que los personajes exponen sus pareceres y, aunque no puedo valorar la certeza de todo cuanto se explica en la obra, en lo que respecta a las religiones que yo conozco, puedo decir que es precisa.
Otro punto positivo es que la he encontrado, sobre todo, respetuosa. Siento que trata todos los temas con la mayor objetividad y precisión posible y que, a diferencia de lo que ocurre a veces con obras de esta clase, no busca adoctrinar sino educar (claro que todo esto lo hago desde el punto de vista occidental, que es el que tengo). Ello hace que me parezca un buen libro para la gente que quiere iniciarse en cuestiones teológicas o simplemente tratar comprender más acerca de la religión o las culturas del mundo. Sin embargo, considero preciso recalcar que el libro tiene ya unos años y hay cuestiones que se notan anticuadas respecto de su situación actual.
Por otro lado, están los personajes principales: Teo y la tía Marthe. Teo me ha parecido un niño bastante cargante y la tía Marthe una señora demasiado desquiciada. Voy a tratar de de levantar un poco la mano respecto de cuestiones que creo que son más fallos de traducción que de la historia en sí (la obra original es francesa y yo la he leído en castellano) para argumentar esto.
Empezando con Teo, me molesta que el hecho de que esté enfermo, le de derecho a todo, incluso a ser un entrometido con gente que ni siquiera conoce. Le pintan como un adolescente de altas capacidades que sin embargo se comporta en ocasiones como si fuese un bebé. Cada vez que le presentan a una mujer que no rebasa los 30, se enamora de ella. A media obra vuelven a mencionar que Teo tiene 14 años, hecho que me hizo darme cuenta de que a este niño le construyen una personalidad excesivamente lascivia. Tanto por lo que dice como por lo que hace y siente.
La tía Marthe se pasa la mitad del tiempo enfadada y dando voces cuando no corrigiendo e imponiendo su opinión al resto de personajes. Viajan por todo el mundo para empaparse de las culturas de la mano de conocidos que Marthe tiene en cada lugar al que van, pero cuando estos le explican la ruta que van a utilizar para explicar las cosas q Teo, no sólo dice que no (enfadada, claro) sino que hace que lo cambien todo. Tiene más cambios de humor al día que horas tiene éste y no es capaz de frenar a Teo cuando se comporta como un imbécil pero le pega por dejarla atrás en una excursión. Luego está el hecho de que te dejen caer que la señora está enferma (lo mejor de todo, se contagia de la enfermedad de la que se cura Teo porque la del uno traspasa hacia la otra) pero hay que deducir que se cura con el poder del amor, porque de otra manera no explican nada.
Ambos se pasan el viaje durmiendo, caminan 2h y vuelven al hotel a la siesta. Son los reyes de los viajes, tanto que encima de llevar 20 maletas cada uno, compran como jeques en cada destino y hasta se traen un gato de recuerdo que va con ellos a todas partes. En fin, que podría seguir comentando deficiencias e inexactitudes de la historia, pero siento ennegrecería para quién lea mi reseña lo que dije al principio sobre los puntos positivos de esta.
De modo que mi conclusión es: hay que leer el libro con el propósito conocer y culturizarse acerca de cuestiones teológicas sirviéndose de la parte novelística para que se haga más llevadero y comprensible. La parte de ficción, es simplemente la forma que adopta el libro para dar a conocer distintos datos sin que se trate de un ensayo, por eso me ha gustado (aunque, recalco, la historia como tal me ha llegado a parecer en ocasiones dantesca)

THANK GOD IVE FINISHED
Look, this book could have been so good, but I feel like Clément included too many facts and terms. I don't know if I'm just being thick by saying that, but it just feels like a Wikipedia page with character. A book shouldn't feel that way. The information should just flow and feel natural to read, not like a textbook for people getting a PHD in Religious studies.
Also I feel like I connect with every book I read, like I care about the character and what's going on. In this book, I actually couldn't give two shits if Theo lived or died I just wanted it to be over.
Also why would the speech marks disappear...? like I dont know if this was a problem with the translation or the actual author but make up your mind if you want to use them either use them or don't not a bit of both.
I also feel as if I have learnt nothing cause there's so much information on one page with lots of terms and places and stories that by the next page I forgot what happened.

از وقتی با این کتاب آشنا شدم، تمام جنبه های زندگیم تحت تاثیر قرار گرفته. دیدم به تمام جهان عوض شده... سازندمون رو اونجوری که هست شناختم و باورم نسبت به اطرافم تغییر کرده. هر چی بیشتر میخونمش باور میکنم که خیلی پوچ هستیم و برای هیچی اومدیم... این اولین بار نیست که کاترین کلمان توی یه کتاب تمام باورهاتو به چالش نیکشه. قدرت بیانش در تمام کتابهاش تخت تاثیر فکری فراتر از فکر من و تو هست... پیشنهاد میکنم هر کس توی زندگیش حداقل یک بار این کتاب رو با جون بخونه.

while the idea behind it is nice, it is really dense and doesnt paint good scenery or allows you to soak in the information. i had not a lot of visuals to go on, but it does contain a lot of information about religion.

The author mostly relativizes the religion in whose culture she grew up, while she has only kind words about others. If she had grown up in any other culture that she has kind words about, she could only dream of writing a book.

Entre a obsessão pelo dinheiro ou pela falta dele, o(s) trabalho(s) ou a falta dele(s), e por vários e múltiplos assuntos terrenos (guerra, sexualidade, família, etc.), Estados, homens e igrejas deixaram de pensar e discutir a questão "Deus" (o fanatismo e o beatismo, tão na moda, não pensam e não discutem). This has been a very impressive mighty read .
I have enjoyed Theo’s Odyssey immensely over the last 3 days of reading it - being immersed in the different types of religions and learning more about them has been fascinating .
I liked the relationship between Theo and his auntie Martha- she helped him bloom into a intriguing young man !
The people who he met along the way have been such an integral part of his journey and have all helped him to assess life and what it means through teaching him about they’re different religions , beliefs and influential people !
The writing has been a joy to read , so wonderfully descriptive that you could imagine yourself very easily in his Europe , Asia ( which I enjoyed most ), America and Africa !

I read this when I was in high school and have to say. It did leave and impression for me. For a long time I couldn't remember the name of this book and went through almost every thing before I could find out that the book I was looking for was this one. I think I want to read this now when I'm 10 years older than when I first read this. It reminds so much of Sophie's World in good way. This is a book you want to read if you want some little knowledge of world's different religions.

i've had a hard reading this one , although it contains plenty of informations about most known religions of the world, it didn't catch my attention that much , it's the story of a sick young boy who went on a travel with his aunt to find a treatement and discover the spiritual traditions of over 20 countrys.

Basically this book is a journey explaining almost all world religions. An ok book but very superficial. Certainly the section on Buddhism is incredibly shallow and incomplete. I think the author wanted to cover too much in one single volume jepordising the quality of the content. 3 stars is all I can give it.

Mucha información valiosa sobre las religiones del mundo pero la historia y los personajes parecen secundarios. Aun asi es un libro que vale la pena para tener una idea sobre otras religiones del mundo. Me tomo un tiempo decidirme a terminar el libro pero finalmente pude hacerlo.

رمان دنیای تئو را چند سال پیش خواندم . نویسنده سبک داستان را بمانند دنیای سوفی ارائه داده است البته با پیچیدگی کمتر. این رمان همان طور که در توضیحات آن آمده در خصوص تاریخ ادیان هست و به نظرم برای فهم تاریخ ادیان برای نوجوانان و جوانان مناسب می باشد.
