Can she find the strength within to save that which she holds most dear? Or will Endra be consumed by it, destroying herself in the process?
As far back as I can remember, I have been enamored by all things fantasy. And the moment I found an outlet for my imagination in writing, it changed my life. When I'm not writing, I enjoy spending as much time as I can with my wife and son at our home in Iowa. Thanks for reading!
(I was kindly gifted an Arc from Tory for my honest opinion)
I rarely ever give 5⭐️ reviews ever, well deserved so well written!
This book reminded me of so many different books/movies merged together and I ADORED it.
Firstly it reminded me of the Witcher a hunter taking down monsters although rather than hunting alone like Geralt they hunted in groups, their kurikai. This kurkai group was like a “found family” their bond with one another was so nice and I genuinely grew to care so much about all of them!
The majority of the time I’m not a fan of world building as sometimes I feel like it’s overly done and other times there’s not a lot of details, but I loved the world building within this book, especially that of the elven city within the trees. I imagined these homes as a mix between the hobbit homes in LOTR and funnily enough tinker bell! (I’m a mum I watch a lot of cartoons). Endra being dark haired and the other heir being blonde with blue eyes, even the queen of light kept making my mind jump back to tinker bell, it honestly made me adore it all the more.
One of things I wasn’t too keen on was the way Endra was like a dog on heat for Tristan from the moment they met, due to this I thought I wouldn’t like the story and I have never been so happy to be proved wrong!
The crazy evil sorcerer and his monsters gave off LOTR vibes👀
I never knew I’d want a saber toothed tiger as a friend before! The creatures within this book sound AMAZING. They remind me of the sort of creatures that Hagrid would own! (HP).
Some of my favourite parts: •Tristan was shouting at Endra and her nemesis Sendana “I might be turned on right now.. if I wasn’t shaking”. Amused me! •The fight scenes👀 •Sendana wanting to see what other talents Reinhardt may possess before holding out her hand. *him looking to Shamus* “I do not believe it to be a request, Reinhart” “your tent or mine?”
If you’re looking for a book with: •Elves/Fae •Strong FMC •Magic •War/Action •Mages •Adventure •Batboy👀 iykyk
100% recommend this book by far my favourite read of the year so far! Such an outstanding debut! I needed book 2 like yesterday👀! Looking forward to continuing on with this series and seeing where it takes this wonderful group of people!
Wow, what an action-packed debut from Tory Forest!
The action in this book kicks off immediately - we jump straight into it within the first few pages and things don't let up for the majority of the book. (Someone literally gets sliced in half in the prologue and when I tell you, the panic I felt when I thought it was the main character… I was really unsure how they were going to bounce back from that, lol.)
Things I loved about this book: - Animal Familiars. I am a complete simp for a fantasy book that has animal familiars!! This trope (if it's considered a trope?) is one of my all-time favourites. It just adds so much magic and I'm here for it. The degree to which I WISHED I had an animal familiar the entire time I was reading The Golden Compass as a kid… This will win me over every time in a book. It's approached a bit differently in this book too, which was neat. - 11/10 Level Action. The battle scenes in this book are frequent and intense. They are described in such detail that you can literally see it playing out like a movie before your eyes. One of my biggest critiques in a lot of other books is that the "big finale battle scenes" and conflicts are over in the blink of an eye which often feels super unrealistic but in this book the MCs really had to work for it. There was a part towards the end of the book when things were feeling pretty bleak and then a *thing* happened and it made the literal hairs on my arms STAND THE FUCK UP. It was powerful. - The Descriptions. Tory has a beautifully descriptive writing style which allowed for me to really clearly visualize everything about this story: the characters, the landscape, the battle scenes. This honestly felt like watching a movie in my head while I was reading - I pictured the world to look like the lovechild of Lothlorien with it's tree-top civilizations and Pandora with it's incredible colours, vivid hues, and hybrid mythical beasts.
Things I loved less about this book: - I felt the romantic connection between the MCs was lacking a little bit - their attraction towards each other felt a bit clinical. I knew going in that this is first and foremost a high fantasy novel with only a small romance aspect and not primarily a romantasy, but even if the romance is minimal I still love when it makes me feel some sort of way, you know? Their reasons for refraining from exploring their connection made absolute logical sense - they're in the middle of a much more important situation to save their entire race, and oaths were made, etc, etc. But I don't always want logic to prevail in books when it comes to the love story (that's what real life is for, lol). I could have used more tension, more tugging at my heart strings, more raw emotion and yearning. I would love to see their connection explored a bit deeper in the next book!
This book is for fans of: - Action-packed battle scenes - Animal familiars - Found family - Elemental magic
A huge thank you to Tory Forest for sending me an ARC copy of this book!
What an amazing epic debut. Can't wait for the second book.
It was full of action and I was hooked from the first page. The only reason for it having 5 stars was that the romance was kind of lacking. The battles were described very vividly but for the romance I coudnt feel/read the attraction between Tristan and Endra, it lacked the emotion/feeling.
But still it was an amazing read!! Definitely recommend it!
{I was gifted an ARC of this novel by Tory Forest and was not paid for my review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.}
I can’t describe how much I enjoyed this novel.
It has everything I expect and love from a high fantasy book: - A group of adventurers - Fae and other magical creatures - An evil sorcerer - Magic and powers - A fight between good and evil
Though still mysterious by the end of the novel, the author builds out the world by weaving it into the story organically. (Thank you for not info-dumping, Tory!)
I was immediately drawn in by and attached to the characters. Their charisma, morals, and love for each other made me feel like I was a part of their group, too. I truly cared what happened to them and am very invested in what is going to happen to them in the next two books in the trilogy.
Our main character, Endra, encounters a mysteriously strong and rancid beast when out hunting with her fellow elves. This fight incites a string of events that will bring Endra to the brink. She must decide whether to give into grief or fight for those she holds dear.
Mysteries will unfurl leaving the reader with questions that will keep them hanging onto every word and dying to get their hands on the next novel. I can’t wait to see where Tory takes Endra and her friends on their next adventure.
If you love high fantasy stories from the likes of Tolkien, Sanderson, and Rothfuss, you’ll absolutely fall in love with this novel.
I’d like to start this review with saying how big of an accomplishment it is to write a book. Tory Forest, congratulations on your first novel and I am looking forward to reading every one after!
I was shocked to see multiple POVs when I first opened the book. To be a first time author and successfully creat multiple POVs is not an easy task. Tory Forest creates distinct characters that have bold personalities, each clash well together but never blend into one another. I really admired this while reading his work.
I fell in love with Endra and her story. It was my favorite POV and I looked forward to every chapter of hers. She is a strong MC that is not afraid to be herself, she recognizes her flaws while maintaining her confidence and charism. I love the strength that she holds, mentally and physically.
This book contains great imagery. The world building plays out nicely for a high fantasy book. The delivery is smooth and creates clear pictures of what is being introduced into the story.
I also really enjoyed the humor that was kept within the book. Even in series moments there were little jumps of humor to lighten the tension and it made me love this book even more.
To stay spoiler free, the last thing I will say is that the ending leaves you wanting more and craving the second book. I can’t wait to get my hands on the rest of this series and see what the futures holds for these characters.
As a major Throne of Glass fan I was drawn into this book from the start. It is clear that Tory Forest was inspired by Throne of Glass but not to the point where I felt like it was copy and paste whatsoever. Other series like The Witcher, The Lord of The Rings, The Way of Kings, are in line with the ambience of this book! If you are a fan of any of the above you will love this book!
I highly recommend this book! Great job, Tory Forest!
So this wasnt initially my cup of tea. I like fantasy but I am old and jaded so most of my favorite fantasy is in very grim environments with heavy emphasis on warfare. Everyone being so happy and high-fiving each other in the beginning hadn't been my thing and I dont like Tristan haha sorry Tristan. HOWEVER. I get to chapter 15 and I cannot put the dang thing down. The book itself is very well written and deserves 5 stars for the YA audience. The fast pace keeps you going until the end.
If middle school me read this, Id be stalking poor Tory for the next one ASAP. As an older adult, I still might cause I am really enjoying myself. The villain reminds me of one of my favorites, Panis Rahl from the Sword of Truth series. A little bit of a moustache-twirly villain but it fits the setting just like it does here. I will be pre-ordering the next one, I enjoyed the antics and honestly in a weird way it reminded me of a 90s fantasy story like Krull or The Neverending Story. If you are unsure, pick it up. Its one of those stories that is just fun to read.
I do have a couple of criticisms but they are mostly due to my taste. I would have liked it to be longer. Like, 800 pages longer. I feel like if there was more emphasis on the relationship of Dren and Tristans connection to the Queen I would have soaked that up like a sponge. I didn't end up feeling in the world enough since we were in the middle of a chase and didn't have time to stop. My favorite characters ended up showing up the least which made me a little sad but hoping to see them in the next book. Sandana and Reinhart. The pairing of Tristan and Endra also didn't hit for me. I wanted Endra to end up with Reinhart and Tristan to have a tragic marriage to the Queen. Haha dont judge me, they are my OTP!
I have to give this author credit for a great prologue and starting chapters. More times than not it takes several chapters and worst case most the book to feel like "ok I am into this" and with this book the prologue got me. I was intrigued and into it. I have learned I like a "shock and awe" in my reading and this book definitely gave off those vibes. The world is so beautiful and the creatures are gorgeous, author did a great job of world building and setting the scene, I had imagery the whole book. The plot sucks you in with the action and the story unfolding. This is high fantasy for sure. I kept thinking that Miri the saber-tooth tiger is Battle Cat from He-man as that is how she is described.
A few critiques...some of the creatures where so out there it was hard to imagine what it would look like. The author did a great job with some more of the gruesome scenes that resulted in a loss of a character, but at the end Miri gets stabbed in the neck torso and more and she is clearly dead like no way can a creature fae or human survive that but she was healed it felt out of theme for the book when others from far less perished. I would have liked the charaters personalities to pop a bit more and also a bit of smut between Tristan and Endra. I do realize this is fantasy and not a romantasy.
Overall it was an enteraining read! Cant wait to see where it leads!

A powerful debut novel about betrayal, friendship, and a world besieged by a dark threat.
In Forest’s debut novel, we are introduced to a lush and captivating world, whose exotic flora and fauna are described in beautiful, imaginative detail. Endra, a powerful Fae warrior, seeks to avenge a horrible wrong done to her people. Aided by an amusing and often relatable ensemble of characters, she must ultimately find the strength and power within herself to beat her ennemies. Forest weaves intricate and dynamic battle scenes into his story while supplementing it with moments of humour and wit. The world building in this novel is impressive to say the least, with the author often tying elements of the world’s history, politics, and languages into the plot in a way that feels natural and well thought out. A great read for anyone who loves Dungeons and Dragons, an ensemble adventure story, and the promise of a thrilling series.
Action-packed story that kept giving me LOTR vibes. Endra is our fae FMC, considered young, for her kind has just come into her magic. She is a Huntress and protector of their sacred woods, and the hunters are in smaller packs where the blood-bonded group is more like family to each other. And I can't forget about Miri, who is part of their hunting group, something like a familiar and a saber-toothed tiger who can camouflage herself with her surroundings... how cool is that!! Well written, witty banter mixed throughout, and the ending had me on the edge of my seat, ready to throw the book, lol. Very minimal, slow burn romance, and there were bits here and there when Endra came off immature/childish, which irritated me. Overall, I thought this was a great read, and I am looking forward to seeing this story continue in the next book!
WELLL LET ME JUST SAY WTF!!!! And WOW JUST WOW!!!!
This book gave me the Golden Compass for some reason and I wasn’t the only reviewer that thought that. This was action from the beginning left and right. For being his first debut novel his writing skills was perfection, the way he described everything was so amazing. I’m a visual person and I was reading this book like I was watching a movie. The battles, the scenery, the description of things and the magic. Everything about this book was perfection. TORRYYY you almost gave me a heart attack towards the end of the book. But it was all worth it at the end. Your book is going to my top 5 favorite fantasy books… I loved it and I absolutely cannot wait for book 2.
This book is perfect for those who want fantasy without the overpowering romance aspect! Tory did an amazing job at meshing two very different, yet similar elements together into a storyline that keeps you entranced from the very beginning.
The chemistry between characters is effortless, the banter from the strong FMC is endearing, the action is well conveyed for a very strong imaginative movie for the readers mind. I loved this read as a dungeons and dragons fan and a fantasy reader! Great job, Tory! I can’t wait to see where book 2 takes us!
I debated for a few days how I wanted to rate this one. On the one hand, it's decently well written. On the other hand, the story lacks depth for my tastes. The world seems interesting but we don't know much about it. The characters might be interesting but we don't know much about them. The plot could be interesting but also doesn't have much depth. Seeing that the age range for this book is 16-18 explains a lot of it.
If I had nothing else to read I'd maybe read the next one. I have a lot of things on my TBR list though so...probably not.
I purchased Tory's book a couple years ago as he's an old friend. Fantasy not being my usual genre, I lost track of its whereabouts. I rediscovered it 5 days ago, began reading, and could not stop!
I loved everything about this book. There were multiple times my jaw was on the floor. I always appreciate authors that write stories that surprise you and aren't predictable.
I am now obsessed with this world and am so excited that Book 2 is out so I can continue the binge.
Give this book a go, you will not be disappointed.
When I started reading this book I was not sure what to expect. However it did not take long for me to get lost in this world and fall deeply into a state trance as I could not stop reading! The character arcs and development, were wonderful. I felt connection to all of the characters as I followed them through their ups and downs. I eagerly look forward to reading the sequel knowing I’d enjoy rereading this first book again and again.
Really good premise..... action, adventure, trauma. For those who like spice this is a 0 spice and sometimes the romance elements aren't as well developed as the actual story line. However as a fantasy lover I would recommend.
1 area I will warn is that the term elf, faerie and fae are used interchangeably in this book. So if that's triggering for you as you as see them as separate entities I would avoid as it will cause you alot of rage.
This book was such a fun read! The epic fantasy will a badass FMC and some amazing fight scenes was exactly what I needed at the moment. I really urge you to read this. Tory Forest’s storytelling ability is what made this book come alive for me. I truly enjoyed the journey at look forward to the next in the series!
Buckle in for an emotional rollercoaster ride and some crazy battle scenes. I would definitely reread this but I'm highly anticipating a second book. I enjoyed the bounce between characters and knowing what they were thinking/going through. (Because I'm nosy like that lol) Very easy, enjoyable read just be ready for some heart wrenching moments.
So yes I found you on TikTok and yes I went straight bought the book and the read it before it got here… if you want an epic adventure and favorite reads are LOTR, anything by Kal Kade, Brandon Sanders… read this!!!
I loved reading this! The characters journey is amazing and seeing the divided world was so fun. The thrown together party had such interesting dynamics. I can't wait to read more.
This book is SO SO SO good! The pace is good, and I was able to completely fall into this world! I will be recommending this book. I am so hoping there is much more of this book to come.
I was worried about this book at 1st as was shorter then i expected however i didnt need to its full with lots of world buliding but you learn it as the story continues enjoy it lots
I haven't read a book in one sitting in a long time and with PTSB it was like flying through it. Found the author on TikTok, loved the cover, the blurb and the genre so it's was easy for me to pick it up. Characters are well defined, the story moves at a good speed and the world built by T.Forest is magnificent. It was a bit too short for my taste (I love big fantasy bricks) but it's my understanding there is going to be a second volume at some stage. Looking forward to it!
