How is it that some of the best "books" I've read all year, technically aren't books at all? Once again I've been blown away by another SPN fanfic. Past Present was everything I was looking for in an AU for my OTP Destiel. Thank you Lastknownwriter, for making my ship sail even more. I'd also really like to find your playlist on YouTube.
This is an alternate universe fic. There is no supernatural things going on. Dean doesn't hunt, and Cas is not an angel. This was the authors first fan fic, but you wouldn't know it if she hadn't said so. Very well written.
I loved the road trip. It felt realistic to me. No driving from NY to California in a day. The places felt real. Like the author knew them, not just pulled random places out of a hat. That made it more enjoyable.
Low angst...other the one incident that derailed them. There are no dumb misunderstandings that keep them apart. The reason felt legitimate.
I like these versions of the side characters, especially Gabe. The diary made my smile.
The story line is simple, but well executed. I felt the love.
What I really enjoy about LKW is that she doesn't talk down to you, the reader. She researches. She builds her worlds. She makes you invest in her characters. She includes references (in this case the literary beginnings of chapters as well), and she makes you love her leads as their own characters, rather than simply stand-in foils for their canon counterparts.
They're people. They sound like people and love like people and suffer like people, but you know that she'll lead you back to a safe landing.
In Past, Present, LKW took a concept that gains a lot of steam in fanfic: the amnesia trope. What if you fell in love with someone, and built your life around them. . . and then the world yanked the rug out from beneath you.
Could you find each other again?
Did you ever really lose each other at all, or does that kind of love leave an indelible mark on your psyche?
Past, Present is a great story, and a fandom favorite for a reason.
