I did not realize it takes a year to create an episode from start to finish. Then again, that probably explains why there was a reference to the Jojos Bizarre Adventure “to be continued” meme in 2021

“Family Guy:” a cartoon that has vexed viewers, disgruntled parents and enflamed clergymen. While blunt to the point of blasphemy, in no small feat “Family Guy” has proved to be a wildly successful cartoon phenomenon, airing for 20 years and counting. No small feat.

How many other adult cartoons can say the same (minus “The Simpsons”)? How many other shows can say they’ve been canceled and brought back, poked fun of the FCC, addressed serious topics such as abortion and Black Lives Matter, while also surviving countless lawsuits? One thing is for sure, “Family Guy” has revolutionized the way we make fun of pop culture, and a lot of hard work from a dedicated team goes into this frivolous cartoon. Frazier Moore’s Inside Family Guy: An Illustrated History (Dey St.) is the complete guide for any hard-core fan, of which I count myself.

I’ll be honest…when starting this book, I was a little hesitant. I have been a “Family Guy” fan for as long as I can remember and have seen every episode at least twice, so did I really need to read a book on it? I did.

Not only does this coffee table book include insight from the creators, voice artists, producers and more, but it also adds a layer of depth to a show that, after airing so long, can feel like just a cartoon. But a TV show is more than just a TV show. Every step of the creative process from writing the script, reading through it together, creating the storyboards, recording the audio, coloring the drawings, designing the props, characters and backgrounds, syncing the timing of it all to animation…to say it’s a painstaking journey would be an understatement.

A great book for die hard Family Guy fans. It provides a lot of background information on the history of the show, the voice cast, the producers, composers and even how Family Guy was once canceled and how Seth and the crew got it back on air.

Moreover, I really enjoyed that this book gives you all the details on how an episode is produced, from: writing the script, casting, table reads, storyboards and design, musical scores, choreography that helps in animation, character/background/colour and prop design, timing, checking, animation, rewrites and retakes, pacing and mixing.

It’s also hilarious how they describe how they got away with certain jokes that would probably have been cut or censored otherwise. Also many storyboard panels are included of very iconic moments of the show.

There is so much to learn from this book if you are a fan of the show and really goes to show how much work goes into making Family Guy.

Serial „Family Guy” kończy właśnie 24 lata. Przed Wami recenzja wyjątkowej książki autorstwa Faziera Moore’a. „Family Guy.

I got the signed edition and it’s so cool! A lot of the facts in here I already knew but I did learn some new things too! I’m a huge fan and have seen all the episodes minus the Star Wars ones many times over and can quote so much of it. This is such a nice coffee table book for any Family Guy stan!

The art is fantastic, especially the entire section devoted to the Road series of episodes. Honestly those episodes have always been the pinnacle of the series and could encompass an entire art book of their own. The making of information is thorough and interesting, however it is done in such a dry manner that it's a bit of a sluggish read. Still, the art makes it worth the while.

Never felt so intellectual about Family Guy before, on my way to being the worst person in a room. Really helpful production work, great for learning about story telling and the likes.
