Misdirected theme, but contains much good information

This short book is difficult for me to review because I think Hodges does a wonderful job explaining aspects of Christianity that are commonly overlooked or misunderstood. The premise that the four cups of Passover directly apply to Christians as laid out in the book I don't believe is Biblically sound. I do believe that Passover is an important holiday that Christians need to understand in all of it's Messianic significance, but taking statements made to a particular people and applying them to a people far removed in time, context, and culture I do not believe to ever a good thing. Apart from the misapplication of the four cups of promise, most of this book contains good information for believers. This is why I'm torn and have a hard time recommending the book. I do believe there is well stated information in here that will help most believers along in their journey, but the overarching theme of the book isn't warranted. Thus, I give the book an average number of stars and relay my dilemma here to you.

The author takes the four cups of wine used in the celebration of Passover to help us understand God’s ancient promises. As we are guided through these four cups of promise, it is clear that God is working out a plan for each of us that He had from the very beginning.

I liked this book very much. Chris Hodges is a master at explaining things for those of us who aren’t theologians. The four cups are sanctification, deliverance, redemption and praise. We are set apart by sanctification, delivered by shutting the door on the past, redeemed by God’s grace, and learn to praise Him for giving us the means to be totally fulfilled.

I recommend this book for anyone seeking a deeper look into how we fit into God’s plans.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for review purposes from Tyndale House.

Enjoyed the book

Very basic concepts with a very powerful meaning. A good read for Christians. I like the simplicity of the four cups analogy.

I decided to look a little bit into this "If my life has a specific purpose, what is it" topic. A friend who new about this, recommended this book to me. It does indeed touch the topic and also uses the "God frees and delivered his people from Egypt" analogy, which I am actually rather fond about. It like this analogy as an image how we individually can be set free to live a life that God has in mind for us. The references to the four cups that are still being used in today's Jewish tradion of Seder celebrations are another emotional hook, I used to go to a church where we celebrated these Seder nights and I always loved it. What put me off was the fomulaic nature of the book's message. Do A, then B, then C and finally D and you will experience it the same way as the author and his happy mega church does. That gave the whole approach a bit of a blinkered touch, and because of negative religious experience I don't respond very well to that and simply don't think this one size fits all works. Still a worthwhile read with helpful thoughts and insights.

I enjoyed the book. It’s short and actually very simple. I enjoyed his idea behind the four cups. I am uncertain I appreciate his interpretation of some of the four cups. I think he and I just have some doctrinal differences. That said, I have been to his GROW conference and it’s impressive. The things he has done with the way he has incorporated this four cups idea is a thing to behold. The good thing about it is that it’s easy to make the idea fit your doctrine and your style. So with most religious books, I would say, take the meat and throw away the bones. There is some good stuff here! For me, there are some bones too. As may or may not be the case for you as well. Take what works. Take the good stuff, toss the bad and I believe you will find enough to grow your church in an effective and biblical way. Which, by his own mouth, is what Chris Hodges is trying to do anyway. Help you build your church in an effective, and biblical manner!

A powerful guide to help you grow and understand your faith in God. Simple points, written in a way that is easy to understand, with scripture often throughout to reference the point being made. This book helped me understand some biblical and spiritual terms better, and directly addressed a lot of the journey I’ve been through. I believe most people can relate to a lot of this book. It would make a great small group study. I will definitely read it again.

I have also been to the GROW Conference once at Church of the Highlands in Birmingham, mentioned later in the book. I recommend it for church leaders, but I will say it’s important to be intentional about what area you want your church to grow in. If you are able, it’s best to take a group of leaders from different areas of your church so you can split up and cover many classes with lots of different information. You will gain much more from the conference this way.

Simplo Truths that Transform

The Four Cups lays out the design of God's plan for helping us become all we were meant to be and experience fulfillment far beyond anything we ever imagined possible. Many of us have dreams inside us of things we want to do or to be that can sometimes, even often, feel beyond our grasp, or which simply nevee materialize because we fail to take the steps necessary to make them a reality. In The Four Cups Chris gives us clear understanding of what it takes to live a truly fulfilling life and lays out practical steps any person can take to begin living a more satisfying life right now. I know he's enabled me to see some important.changes I can ma and I can't wait to put those ideas into action!

stumbled upon this book recommendation and really enjoyed the explanation of how the Exodus of the the Jewish people and the promises of God in Exodus 6 can still be applied to us today.

I have been contemplating the promises of God in my own life and how to apply them and see them throughout Scripture, and I liked how Chris Hodges clearly depicts each promise as a "Cup" to lead to a life of fulfillment
The Cups of:
Sanctification
Deliverance
Redemption
Praise
+While I enjoyed each chapter of him diving into the explanation of each Cup/Promise, it was really the last chapter of application that convicted me the most and will have me thinking for time to come.

Helpful approach to Christian belief about redemption, grace and growing in Christ. I appreciated it more the second time I read it (recently) after having participated in the Freedom Small Group study. That study isn't necessary to understand Hodges' approach, but it does include a more detailed elaboration on the foundation behind each of the Four Cups.

Enjoyed this book more than Fresh Air. It’s much shorter, more succinct and I felt like it packed more in. I loved how Pastor Chris describes Highlands’ model for moving people through the four areas/ministries/buckets they’ve laid out. I have not seen a better, more comprehensive ministry strategy or philosophy than this one. It’s a must read!

Most important read this year

I’ve read almost 20 books in the last six months. As a church leader, this is the most important one. It helped me clarify the pathway for spiritual growth and an intentional process for taking people where they are to where God wants them to be.

I loved the message of this book and the influence of ideas. I do not know if it was just me, but I had a difficult time getting through it. I serve on a Dream Team at my church, and so, I was thrilled to read about the reason for the name. Worth the read.

“What if God has had a plan for you since the very beginning? The God of the universe has made you some big promises. He made them first in the Old Testament, but they remain at the core of His heart and have never changed. They’re the key to your fulfillment and to His plans for you, both in this life and the life to come. In the ancient celebration of Passover, we find a picture of God’s heart for us in the four cups of whine representing each of these core promises. Now, in Four Cups… the author reveals that no matter where we are on our spiritual journey, these four cups of promise provide a simple, powerful, unforgettable way of reaching our potential and growing closer to God.”

In this book – Four Cups, the author brings to us the background and biblical significance of the Four Cups of Promise given by God to the Jewish people as found in the book of Exodus and how each Cup reveals the developing relationship between us and God.

The Four Cups - The Cup of Sanctification, The Cup of Deliverance, The Cup of Redemption and The Cup of Praise – show us God’s heart for us in each of the promises for His people at that time, but we also learn of how these four cups represent the love and hope of Jesus in our lives today.

This is a wonderfully enlightening book that I truly enjoyed reading. To have the historical and biblical background of these Cups to a non-theologian was a real blessing.

The Four Cups of Promise: The Journey to Fulfillment God Planned for You by Chris Hodges is probably one of the best books I have read on God and his promises to believers. Chris Hodges takes the 4 promises God made to Moses and his people and shows us how they also apply to us. The four cups reference the four cups of the Passover that helps the Jewish people to remember and tell the story of how God brought his people out of Egypt and bondage like He promised.

This book explains God's plan for saving and getting his people out of bondage and sin, and it shows how it is the same plan and promises God has for us. Chris Hodges explains this in a powerful way by using the four cups from the Passover dinner. Though I knew the promises that God made his people were for us also it was a new powerful way to look at these promises. This book is encouraging and helpful and very well written in away that is moving and faith building. I think it is a book that everyone should take the time to read and think about how God's promise to take us out of bondage was for the Jews as well as for us today also. I found this book was a page turner and I have so many highlights in it. Here are just two of the many quotes I have highlighted 1. " When we find ourselves captive to our own selfish and sinful behavior, we lose sight of our purpose. But God has promised to redeem us, to reach down into the muddy pit where we've stumbled and fallen and lift us up again- just as he did with the people of Israel when he brought them out of captivity in Egypt. " pgs 26-27 and 2. " We don't get our lives together in order to get to God. We go to God to get our lives together!" pg48. I can truthfully say this book helped me in my growth as a believer. I loved this book and it is an easy fast read and well worth it but be sure to have a pen or highlighter handy when you read it because you will need it. This would be a great study book for small groups too.

Can a book really make a difference? This one can.. I have become so tired of books and Christian authors who promise to show you only how to gain wealth, and prosperity with so much other useless, senseless topics added into their writings. No one seems to address the real things God has promised and is willing to give. This book will show you how to break free from bondage, and discover what God’s purpose for your life really is.

The book is rich with Jewish history, which is fascinating for me being Jewish, and page after page is filled with stages of Faith. Want to discover the joy and hope that God has to offer? I know you can find that throughout this book. You will discover how to get back on the path that will lead you on your spiritual journey.

You will discover God’s love and how to receive the joy he has to offer. I love when the author says that “discipleship is not about learning “more stuff” it’s about finding and developing the reason why we were created in the first place”. And then living it out. Powerful words. I highly recommend this book to anyone. Whether you are a solid Christian , a new beginner or someone who is looking for answers and needs God’s love and guidence. The pages of this book can and will help anyone. A five star book guananteed to begin or renew your passion for Christ.

The book starts out by taking readers back to Old Testament times during the enslavement of the Israelite's in Egypt. During the Exodus we find the four promises given by God that Hodges draws from for his book.

God promised His people that He would free them from their oppression, rescue them from slavery, redeem them with a powerful arm and great acts of judgment, and claim them as His own people. (Exodus 6: 6-7) These are the promises God made to the nation of Israel, but they are also promises for all people who call on the name of the Lord and trust in the atoning blood of Christ Jesus.

I really enjoyed and appreciated Hodges' emphasis on community verses individual life of belief. The book uses Jewish history and tradition to help us understand the purpose God has for us now in our current life situations.

I can recommend this book for anyone wanting to dig deeper into the promises of God and His plans for our lives.

Four Cups is another good book by Chris Hodges and I found it to be as good as his first book, which I read last summer. In this book, the author uses traditional Jewish history to explain the four stages of faith. The author explained that God has a purpose for every Christian and that He longs to rescue us from bondage, deliver us from the things that hold us back from fulfilling our purpose, show us what His purpose is for each of us, and to feel part of a family where we have a specific job to do for Him. The author explains these concepts using the four cups that Jewish families drink during their Seder at Passover and the significance not only for Jewish families but also for Christians. What I really enjoyed about the book is how the author incorporated many scriptural verses in each chapter to give meaning to what he was trying to explain and how each chapter ended with a prayer. I found the prayers to be very meaningful and as an essential first step to growing closer to God. I was impressed with the author’s second book and I came away with not only a better understanding of my own purpose, but also the history of Passover and its importance to a Christian.

Four main promises of God are revealed within four individual cups. Each cup is explained of which promise of God it holds. There is the cup of Sanctification, the cup of Deliverance, the cup of Redemption, and the cup of Praise. Four Cups tells us how we are to drink of each of these cups.

I found Four Cups to be an excellent read. It is a book I will return to over and over again. It contained just what I needed to hear at just the right time in my life. Four Cups was uplifting and encouraging. Each and every page held me captivated and longing for more. There were many scripture verses supporting the content within the book.

I would highly recommend Four Cups to all readers!

The four cups used during the Seder meal in the Jewish celebration of Passover represent the four promises God gave the Israelites when they were led out of bondage in Egypt (found in Exodus 6).In his book "Four Cups: God's Timeless Promises for a Life of Fulfillment" author and pastor Chris Hodges connects the four Old Testament promises with Christ's commissioning of the disciples and his plan for us.
This short, easy to read book is packed full of information on how to live a fulfilled life by following God's individual plan for each of us through his promises. I recommend this book to all Christians no matter which phase you are in through your spiritual journey. Pastor Hodges provides fresh insights which will benefit new and mature Christians alike.

Four Cups by Chris Hodges was a solid book with a solid message. I found it to be a good review of Biblical material. It was familiar and yet fresh in its personalized approach to God, His promises, and how they relate to us presently. The voice Hodges used was conversational, as well as motivational. He spoke in such a way that readers could be both enlightened and encouraged right where they live. I appreciated that Scripture was used throughout this book, but it was done in such a way that it did not come across as overly scholastic.

A complimentary copy of this title was made available by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. The words I have expressed are my own. I was not expected to write a positive critique nor was I expceted to rate this book highly.

This straight forward book gives insight to finding your spiritual fulfillment with God's promises. It tells of four key promises that God wants you to use in his plans for you. This book will help you move forward and gives a biblical understanding to these promises. This book uses history and tradition to help you understand the life God has in store for you.

I am not sure how I will use the insight from this book to help me in my life's journey, but it gives me something to think about. This book allows you to see what is there to guide you in your journey. It can help when you need some further insight and guidance in moving forward.

I struggled getting through this book as there were things used in the author's guiding that just made me feel a bit uneasy and were hard for me to grasp.
Using the four cups of wine used in Passover, he uses them as a metaphor of sorts for God's promises of a plan for our lives. I just think it's kind of kitschy and not sound but I'm not exactly a doctor of theology either.
Some of the passages were encouraging but this might be a better suited read for those with more in depth theological knowledge and didn't feel like it was attainable understanding for even a Sunday School teacher possibly.

Chris book is a reminder of the covernants that God has given us. most of us don't understand the term covernant; Chris has seen this and has explained in easy to understand language what a covernant is and what it means to us Chris shows is the 4 main covernants of God in the Old Testament were then repeated for us in the New Testament with Jesus. These covernants had to be repeated but with a few changes; for now Jesus the Messiah had arrived and we now had the Holy Spirit in our hearts. understanding these covernants that have been given deeper knowledge of who God is and what He wants for you as well as a stronger relationship. read this book and see the plans God has for you.

First book in Sheila I finished in one day. A useful book for growing Christians to read, but very light and fast read.. Most of the points made in this book I have already learned from scripture. I have some doubts/conflict about the methods and models that are promoted for church growth ( seeker-sensitive oriented) but feel the life groups are an excellent way to promote community. Recommended.
