Extreme Prayer: The Impossible Prayers God Promises to Answer

Rate this book
It's not about praying more . . .
It's about praying differently.

What do you do when you're desperate to hear God's voice? Surprisingly, it is in our most heart-hungry moments―when we feel overwhelmed or alone, struggle with unanswered prayers, or just aren’t sure what to do―that we are actually poised to pray the most effective kinds of prayers possible.

Extreme Prayer taps into that longing for connection with God when we need it most by teaching us to pray the kinds of prayers Jesus promised to answer. Drawing on Scripture, Greg Pruett shows how to intentionally tap into Jesus’ open-ended promises about prayer in a way that achieves maximum Kingdom impact.

Access the power of extreme prayer—and watch as God's immeasurable glory is unleashed in your life.

This book will challenge you to step up your prayer life in faith. The author shows how God can move through what he calls "extreme prayer" through his own life and Scripture. His method: ACTIVE - Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Intercession, Vanquishing Satan, Extreme Prayer. We often stop after intercession and don't press on into the "impossible". Extreme prayer is marked with persistence, unity (group prayer), specific asks, complaints in trials (Job/Jeremiah). Solid book and if you aren't slow like me you could read it in one or two sittings.

This is an amazing book that will both inspire and challenge the reader(s) to pray more boldly, more specifically, and more often.

It would be so easy to say that I found certain phrases cheesey in a self-help sort of way, or that Pruett sounds further down the charismatic faith spectrum than I would align myself. Maybe that would give me an out for what Pruett and God are calling us to in response to reading this book.

This book is a light read with simple, attainable language and awesome stories of Pruett witnessing God at work. I cannot claim the same lightness for the change it asks you to make with your life. As a Bible Translator, Pruett is specially trained to know God's word in and out, but that training also helps him know how to deliver it and it's demands right into the palm of your hand.

Don't expect this book to leave you unchanged. It's best to read it week by week in a group setting, whether with your family, small group, faith-based organization or ministry staff, around a table with friends at a coffee shop, or all of the above. Be ready to have your world shaken up by discipline and answered prayers as you make prayer THE strategy.

Great little book, love the ACTIVE prayer specifically. (Adoration, confession, Thanksgiving, intercession, vanquish enemies.) All in Jesus' name. It's worth coming back to for a re-read!

Given to me by MRN Board President. And fun to find out the West Africa relationship to A and M Johnson too! :)

"When you faithfully unite with others to persist in group prayer for specific endeavors consistent with his character and plan, God's power will far surpass your imagination."

Straightforward primer on prayer from a former missionary in West Africa who is now the president of Pioneer Bible Translators. Chapters on unified group prayer and laments ("faith-filled complaints") stood out the most to me.

Introduction Shaken but Not Stirred
EXTREME PRAYER BEGINS WITH NEED
• We decided to grasp at one last-chance, life-saving branch before sliding completely over the emotional cliff p xiv
o “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” (Romans 8:26, ESV)
• To survive the challenge of the mundane, chose prayer over despair p xv
o “And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”” (Mark 10:47, ESV)
• All good prayer begins with a position of weakness p xvii
• When we call out to Him with the impoverished spirit of a blind beggar, a sinful tax collector, or a prodigal child, God sweeps in to lift us up… p xviii

Ch 1 BLANK CHECKS
Extreme Prayer Accesses The “Whatever You Ask Promises
• God is real, and He wants me to rely on Him first, not as a last resort p5
• I learned not to pray about the strategies, but make prayer the strategy p5
• I turned to the Bible and came across the “whatever” passages in the gospels p6
o “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” (Mark 11:24, ESV)
• I have come to see prayer as the work p7
• We get antsy after praying for a while. We feel like we need to make things happen p7
• Extreme prayer taps into Jesus’ open-ended promises about prayer in a way that achieves maximum Kingdom impact p9
Adoration - worshipping God for who He is
Confession -admitting and repenting of our sin
Thanksgiving -lifting up our gratitude for what He has done
Intercession/Supplication -praying for ourselves and others
Vanquishing Satan -practicing regular spiritual warfare
o “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” (Ephesians 6:11–13, ESV)
o “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7, ESV)
Extreme Prayer -maximizing all the prayer promises of Jesus p10

Ch 2 NAME POWER
God Answers Prayer in Jesus’ Name
• Jesus is at work in this man’s life p17
• Praying in Jesus’ name means presenting requests that resonate with Jesus’ character and advance His plans for the earth p20,21
o “Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.” (John 14:13–14, ESV)
o “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” (John 15:7, ESV)
o “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.” (John 15:16, ESV)
o “In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” (John 16:23–24, ESV)
• Since only the Word of God and people last forever, we should pray that God would use our lives to connect His word to the souls of people p22
• Praying in Jesus’ name, John tells us, means praying the will of God for the world around us p23
• Instead of praying deliberately for the accomplishment of things we spend most of our time praying for things we would like to see happen in our lives --- for healing, a car, or a job. P23
• Jesus did not promise to answer any kind of prayer you want. Jesus promised to answer certain kinds of prayers, including the ones that match His plans for the world p24
• Praying for the mission of God brings power beyond measure p25
• Begin by asking Him for marching orders every morning p28

Ch 3 BLIND TRUST
God Answers Prayers of Faith and Faithfulness
• The degree of faith we have is shown by the degree to which we are faithful p32
• .. we must live out true faith in God, submitting to His lordship and His will for this earth p34
• Faith becomes faithfulness when people obey God because of their faith in Him p35
o “Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.” (1 John 3:21–23, ESV)
• The Bible teaches that God works powerfully through weak earthen vessels to more perfectly manifest His own power p38
• We simply pray in faith, living the most faith-filled lives we know how. Then we watch and wait for God’s provision p40

Ch 4 SHAMELESS
God Answers Persistent Prayer
• Shamesless persistence pays off p45
o “And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.” (Luke 18:1, ESV)
o “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Lk 11:9
• But I have learned that the prayers God chooses to answer are most often the persistent ones p48
• Tenacious prayer builds faith and minimizes pride p49
• Persevering in prayer has been the greatest way I have found to build faith in my diseased heart p52

Ch 5 THE SYMPHONY
God Answers United Group Prayer
• As resources go, I have found that prayer outperformed anything I’ve ever seen p58
• In fact, I believed all over again that God answers unified group prayer p60
• When Jesus hears unified group prayer, His heart soars like a music lover taking in a rapturous melody p61
o “If two of you harmonize in prayer to ask about any task, my Father in heaven will make it happen for you.” Mt 18:19-20
• Bitter grudges erect a major barrier to unified prayer p62
o “And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”” (Mark 11:25, ESV)

Ch 6 FROM BOBSELD TO ROCKET
God Answers Specific Prayers That Build Faith
• God’s power works quietly among groups of faithful believers in ways we can’t really see p69
• Praying general petitions feels safe, but it makes for terribly dull prayer meetings p 71
• When praying specific prayers geared to expand God’s Kingdom, I have observed that it helps to frame the specific requests in terms of God empowering believers to achieve His mission, rather than praying for God to change the hearts of unbelievers p73
o “therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”” (Matthew 9:38, ESV)
• In praying specific prayers, we should focus on prayers asking God to empower His followers to accomplish Christ’s mission p75
o “I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.” (John 17:9, ESV)
• God wants to build our faith, but we make that difficult if we don’t give Him a chance to dazzle us with His omnipotence p76
• God really does answer whatever we ask when we pray the kinds of prayers that Jesus promised He would answer p78
o “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20–21, ESV)
Ch 7 FORSAKEN
God Answers Faith-Filled Complaints
• Complaining to God is allowed with one major condition: we must continue to faithfully obey and follow him in spite of our suffering p85
• Complaints and faith are not always mutually exclusive p86
o “They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete…” (Revelation 6:10–11, ESV)
• Great faith is required to patiently watch and prayerfully wait upon the Lord p87
• “You think you can’t take it anymore, but I have only begun to create in you the full measure of your strength of character. You have only just begun to fully reflect my glory. I’m making you into an unassailable fortress that can withstand anything this world throws at you” p88
• God answers faith-filled complaints with grace, with character development, with the power to persevere, and with a long-term plan that makes all things turn out right in the end p89
Ch 8 MARCHING ORDERS
Extreme Prayer Maximizes Jesus’ Prayer Promises
• … the most exciting aspect of basing ministry on prayer is watching people I work alongside grow in faith p93
• Practicing the principles of extreme prayer leads to belief, not boasting p96
• Some of the strategies I have learned through my own adventures in extreme prayer…
o Begin by asking God to show you what He wants you to do
o Listen for God’s assignment
o Keep strategic prayer lists
o Get together regularly with others in your community of faith for unified, persistent group prayer
o Pray expectantly

Conclusion NO LOITERING
Prayer Shaking the World
• …over the last twenty years I ‘ve convicted by my natural tendency to focus on my own story instead of the story God wants to write in my life …
o “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:15, ESV)
• My prayers were really a request that God make my story into what I dreamed it should be p108
• A beautiful romance is unfolding daily as God courts each person, patiently working His plan in history … He really (does) get His Bride in the end
• Jesus made unlimited promises about prayer to entice us into God’s story p109
• We may be ordinary people, but because Jesus promises to answer our prayers, we will do “even greater things than these”! p113

This was written by the president of Pioneer Bible Translators, with a focus on, as you can guess, prayer! It gave helpful tips on bettering our prayer life, including praying with a community and having specific, instead of generalized, prayers.

From the very beginning of his book Extreme Prayer: The Impossible Prayers God Promises to Answer, Greg Pruett, pulls readers in with his honesty and transparency, sharing how his marriage and cross-cultural ministry in West Africa would have failed except he says that “God honored our decision to pray instead of giving up.”

The Pruetts found themselves struggling to live in a small African village with no modern conveniences, hand-washing cloth diapers with no running water or washing machine. Trying to live in a difficult land and culture took energy enough, but the Pruetts also faced the pressure of translating the Bible among a people who traditionally followed the Qur’an.

Pruett says, “I believe God took me out on a limb and sawed it off because he wanted me to find out that He is real. . . He wanted me to learn than when it comes to success or failure, prayer is vital.”
Throughout the remainder of Extreme Prayer, he shows readers how to tap into the power of extreme prayer in the midst of desperate and heart-hungry moments. Pruett doesn’t just spout platitudes; instead, he shares tried and true lessons he learned himself through twelve years of cross-cultural ministry and then as president of Pioneer Bible Translators since 2007.

Initially, I was a little concerned reading some of the chapter titles like “Blank Checks,” “Name Power,” and “Blind Faith.” So many Bible teachers have misused these principles and turned them into a “name it and claim it” theology. Others have suggested that if one prays and is not healed from an illness, he doesn’t have enough faith.

Pruett himself said he based the idea of extreme prayer on the study and application of Jesus’ scriptural promises to do whatever we ask when we pray in His name. So, I was pleased to read that Pruett qualified his statement by saying, “Praying in Jesus’ name´ doesn’t mean asking for a Ferrari and tacking on the magic words ‘in Jesus’ name.’ It means presenting requests that resonate with Jesus’ character, praying ‘for his name’s sake’ prayers that advance his plans for the earth—in other words, proclaiming Kingdom of God-oriented prayers.”

At another point, Pruett says that faith in God results in extreme answers to our extreme prayers. Again, I was a bit concerned. But not for long! Pruett said, “Just because our prayers are not answered as we expect does not necessarily mean our faith is the problem,” and he goes on to address reasons we might not get the answer we expect. I guess I shouldn’t have questioned a Bible translator’s accuracy in interpreting biblical principles.

Overall, I found Extreme Prayer to be highly encouraging as well as motivating. All the way through, Pruett maintained a kingdom focus, showing readers how to prayer big prayers that line up with God’s Word and His desires. I can't wait to put these principles into practice my own prayer life and experience God in new and exciting ways.

If you’re looking to strengthen or freshen up your prayer life, I guarantee you will enjoy this book and grow from it. I’d even recommend that small groups or ministry teams read, pray and study through Extreme Prayer together. At the end of each chapter are some great questions for personal reflection and group discussion.

Let’s be honest. Full disclosure. If our local church had not been asked to collectively read this little, 123-page guidebook, in preparation for choosing and receiving a new lead pastor, no doubt none of our church members would ever know what author Greg Pruett wrote here.

Right up front, Pruett confesses that “prayer is a challenge for most of us. Some of us have never been taught what to do. Others are not convinced of the power of prayer.” Also in the first chapter, the author defines “extreme prayer” as “intentionally praying the kinds of prayers that tap into all of Jesus’ open-ended promises about prayer in a way that achieves maximum Kingdom impact.” Pruett goes on to explain that “extreme prayer is not the only way to pray; it’s not a replacement for praying about your individual needs.”

You may already be familiar with the ACTS model of effective praying. In addition to including elements of (A) adoration, (C) confession, (T) Thanksgiving, and (S) supplication or intercession, Pruett suggests two more elements: (V) vanquishing Satan, that is practicing regular spiritual warfare, and (E) extreme prayer, that is maximizing all the prayer promises of Jesus. Utilizing all those elements in our prayers, Pruett suggests, helps create an ACTIVE prayer life.

In unpacking “the impossible prayers God promises to answer,” the author unpacks his passionate thesis with eight short chapters, not including his introduction in which Pruett teaches “extreme prayer begins with need.” He goes on to explain that extreme prayer accesses the “whatever you ask” promises of God. In addition, Pruett reminds his readers that “God answers prayer in Jesus’ name . . . God answers prayers of faith and faithfulness . . . God answers persistent prayer . . . God answers unified group prayer . . . God answers specific prayers that build faith . . . God answers faith-filled complaints . . . and extreme prayer maximizes Jesus prayer promises.”

All that teaching Pruett supports by Scripture and by spiritual lessons the author learned while serving as a Bible translator in West Africa for a dozen years and his subsequent tenure as president of the Dallas-based Pioneer Bible Translators.

“Extreme Prayer” could be dangerous to your spiritual health! It’s a quick read. It’s an easy read. But it’s a challenging and a convicting read for all of us who find effective prayer difficult to do, (in good times or bad), let alone extreme prayer. Pruett gets up close and personal. At the end of each chapter, there are extremely thought-provoking questions for reflection and to answer.

One creative feature this reviewer found fascinating and extremely helpful: the use of summary statements pulled from the text posted in bold font on the margins and sprinkled throughout each chapter.

Pruett closes this 2014 prayer guide with several marching orders. In Chapter 8, the author shares “some of the strategies (he’s) learned through (his) own adventures in extreme prayer:”

1. Begin by asking God to show you what He wants you to do.
2. Listen for God’s assignment.
3. Keep strategic prayer lists.
4. Get together regularly with others in your community of faith for unified, persistent group prayer.
5. Pray expectantly.

Finally, Pruett closes by saying he prays that God will use his limited words to release His unlimited power in his readers’ lives.

Greg Pruett’s easy-to-read, short chapter book, “Extreme Prayer” with a forward by Max Lucado, has transformed the way I view praying to God. With vivid, alluring descriptions of his work in Africa and his leadership at the helm of the mission organization, Pioneer Bible Translators, Pruett addresses such topics as praying in Jesus’ name, praying persistently, group prayer and coping with God’s silence. After having faith in Christ for over 40 years, I feel like I have merely scratched the surface of what prayer is all about and how to approach God with my requests. For years, I’ve been uncomfortable with the popular interpretation of praying “in Jesus’ name” and how we pray for the unbeliever; Pruett describes a perspective that makes a lot more sense to me. I’ve been challenged to pray persistently for things that only God can answer and to look beyond praying for health issues to needs of the Kingdom. I’ve been encouraged to cast a vision and partner with God to see that vision fulfilled in His time and in His way. I’m looking forward to reading the book a second time, this time, with a prayer journal and discussion questions close at hand, and purchasing copies for friends.

Greg Pruett writes well, and I appreciate his frank style of writing about God and Christian service. But, the ideas about prayer are mostly ‘works’ based and center around the effort we put in toward praying and being faithful. It’s another book on how humans can get what they want if they do the right thing to effectively ‘twist God’s arm.’ So, I can’t recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about prayer or about relationship with God.
Greg, if you read this review, write a book about some of your experiences as a missionary. Your anecdotes are really interesting and could make an impact on people struggling with their faith or marriage dynamic.
As a related side note; Max Lucado, probably the best known guru for level-headed grace-focused thoughts on God’s love, really should have read this book before writing the forward.

I have read a few books about prayer in my life, and none have been particularly interesting to me. However, Greg Pruett's Extreme Prayer was engaging right from the start and much in the way I read a gripping novel, I had a hard time putting it down.

With incredible stories and, more importantly, a clear challenge to engage in extreme prayer in our lives and organizations, Greg paints a picture of a world in which strategic, persistent and targeted prayer changes us and the world. I will be buying more copies of this to share and use with the team I lead. I think it will be a pivotal part of our minisry's future.

I am very grateful for this book. As I was reading, I was struck by how often I soften or even ignore the incredible invitation of God to tap into his infinite power. Greg Pruett offers a helpful guide to praying the "whatever you ask" prayers from the Gospels. The call to pray specific, unified, persistent prayers in Jesus name was a needed challenge for me. I recommend it for both church leaders and other followers of Jesus who desire to see God's mission accomplished. (This is the review you get when writing while feeding your 2 month old...)

I will sheepishly add my recommendation alongside Max Lucado, who wrote in the introduction: “I cannot recommend (this book) enough.”

Pruett set out to write a testimony of God’s faithfulness in answering prayer, extreme prayer as he refers to it. I found it inspiring and practical, biblical and relevant, humble and bold. Perhaps most importantly, I finished it with my heart full of praise and wonder to God, who welcomes our prayers and longs to answer them, and encouraged and feeling further equipped to pray more “extremely.” I highly recommend it!

This is a very quick read. Using personal stories from the mission field as well as from his years of leading Pioneer Bible Translators, Greg Pruett invites us in to experience just how powerful prayer is as a regular practice. He explores passages from Scripture, as well as outlines what he means by 'extreme' prayer. I recommend this book as one to read if you're interested in reading up on prayer. It's certainly a quick read, it includes discussion questions, and it an excellent encouragement to invest more time in prayer.

I would have loved to read more about the author's different experience of the time they prayed for something humanely impossible and how the enormity of the request nearly made them give up, but that God, in his perfect time, responds in prayer to blow their minds away. Kind of like the preaching of Paul Washer on how God provides.

The principles taught were very insightful and sound. I just wanted more details and examples of how they've experienced God's saving grace.

This book revolutionized my prayer life. Ok, God used it to revolutionize my prayer life. Greg does a wonderful job using scripture and life stories to explain the concept of extreme prayer: a type of prayer God expects his people to be praying. This is not a "name it and claim" concept. Greg is very biblical in his presention. I encourage every Christian to read this book.

Greg’s does a wonderful job of illustrating and outlining the power of prayer and how you can develop some of the habits to access this incredible gift of God. Greg’s storytelling only adds to his transparency and honesty……where he is speaking with you and not at you

What a good book to remind you about the effectiveness of prayer!

It’s encouraging to hear stories of the amazing prayers God has answered. In times when I lack faith and the zeal to pray and I’m frustrated, this book reminds me that prayer actually works, and guides me on how I can pray.
