The Wonder Within You: Celebrating Your Baby's Journey from Conception to Birth

Rate this book
Many newly pregnant women believe mothering begins after the baby is born. As a result, their pregnancy is spent preparing the baby’s room, buying a crib, and even attending childbirth classes. All of these activities are valuable and help to prepare for this new life, but what about before the baby is born?

The Wonder Within You takes you on a journey that weaves scientific studies, dozens of interviews with mothers, and storytelling into a fascinating account of life inside the womb. An obstetrician loads each chapter with advice. A sonographer gives incredible 3 and 4-D snapshots (available online) and stories from her 25 years of watching babies grow in utero. Each chapter includes week-by-week developmental information, findings from recent neonatal studies, and even nutritional advice all designed to nurture a healthy baby. The Wonder Within You also serves as a weekly journal for expectant mothers to chronicle her own baby’s journey to life outside the womb. It’s a keepsake baby book that begins before birth.

The Wonder Within You will help moms meet the real needs of the growing pre-born baby. Sonograms, dietary and medical advice, and stories from experienced moms are combined to encourage 40 weeks of prenatal parenting designed with a joy for the journey in mind.

Being pregnant is truly an awesome experience. There truly is nothing to compare to the feeling of a little life growing and moving inside you. After dealing with years of infertility and losing our little Taylor Truth last year, I was worried that I would never experience the thrill of pregnancy. But, God granted my prayer of giving me another baby! I have loved reading and learning about my baby’s development. It’s like living with the most fascinating science experiment by learning how their amazing bodies work. Still, I longed to find a good Christian book that had a good blend of encouragement and valuable health information. I was very excited to review The Wonder Within You by Carey Wickersham in the hopes that I find the balanced book that I’d been looking for.

The Wonder Within You goes week by week through your pregnancy. It’s nice that the book is divided into such small chunks and it gives you something to celebrate each week when you hit a new milestone!

I was relieved to see that the scientific information was accurate, well researched and helpful. The Internet is full of too many scary message boards and comments that can overwhelm and give false information. The Wonder Within You presents the information well and accompanies it with adorable sonogram photos and lots of health tips for mommy.

My favorite part of the book is the section where you can write a little something to or about the baby. I even read Baby G what I have written! The Wonder Within You also contains a pregnancy calendar with stickers where you can mark pregnancy milestones.

The things that I found most disappointing of The Wonder Within You were the videos. I was very excited about them, but I found them to be a little cold since they are played silently and are very short. I love seeing babies and having an idea about what Baby G is doing, but the videos did not impress me or add anything to the reading of the book. (Here’s a peak at one of them from 32 weeks.)

I enjoyed this book, but I did find myself wishing that it had gone deeper. I wanted more scientific information, more Biblical encouragement and more bonding for my baby and me. While I appreciate hearing other women’s stories, sometimes they can just be too frightening or too sad for a pregnant mommy to read. I wish that the author had focused more attention on the parts of the book that excelled and left out many of the other mommy stories. If you are looking for a fun way to keep a very simple journal of sorts and learn about your growing baby, you will enjoy The Wonder Within You. However, if you are looking for a lot of encouragement mixed with information, you may find enjoyable, but slightly disappointing.

(I was provided this book from the Tyndale Blog Network for this review, however all opinions are my own.)

Through the use of technology The Wonder Within You takes an astounding look into womb – opening a window into creation. Author Carey Wickersham shares the many marvelous details of a baby’s life from conception to birth. Drawing upon her craft as a journalist Carey has collected and preserved intimate encounters such as “Mommy Moments” and “Prenatal Postcard’s” from women who have walked the road to motherhood before us. With the inclusion of detailed developmental milestones, medical and nutritional maternity advice, and a place to journal the thoughts of her heart – The Wonder Within You is the ultimate pregnancy resource and keepsake!!

Having two little blessings of my own I can appreciate the wealth of knowledge that this book has to offer. Should I become pregnant a third time I would use this book, especially the videos that are accessible via the QR codes, to share the mystery of life with my children. This makes the book a valuable tool for new moms and veteran mothers alike.

The team of Carey Wickersham, Focus on the Family, and Tyndale House have produced a text that both acknowledges and edifies our Creator God. The science is there and so is He, the Author of Life. Buy this book for yourself or a mom-to-be because of the information and solid advice it provides, as well as the encouragement, laughs, and awe it will inspire. Celebrate LIFE with The Wonder Within You.

I have a lot to share about this book including my favorite features and sonogram images on my blog: http://christianshelfesteem.wordpress...

It is wonderful to have a pregnancy book written from a Christian perspective! This book is filled with helpful information, stories from other moms, and journaling prompts. There is also a pregnancy calendar with stickers to keep a record of milestones in pregnancy.

This book follows a weekly chapter format. Each week has an ultrasound picture, a link to an ultrasound video, descriptions of the baby’s development, information regarding the mother’s health, nutritional information, quotes from other mothers, and a journaling prompt with space to journal right in the book! This pregnancy book will walk with a mom through pregnancy and become a keepsake in the years to come.

This book would make a wonderful gift for an expectant mother, especially a first time mom.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, it had great advice and interesting little stories that women wrote about their pregnancies, some that were really amusing and others that were just really touching.
I am not even expecting but I find this fascinating and think it will come in handy when I am expecting my first.
