The yacht Sirene is found sailing aimlessly and without anyone on board near the coast of Baja. Its owner, Morgan Hunter of Hunter Steamships, hired a group of experts to search for his son, Bryant Hunter, who was one of the missing passengers of Sirene - Dr. Isaac Neumann, a marine biologist; Dr. Stephen Minter, a physicist; journalist of Isis magazine Kristin Ewell, and Scott ‘Duke’ Duquesne, an expert diver. The Search for Bryant Hunter is an exciting sci-fi thriller by Stan Smith.

I wasn't sure what to expect at first when I read the synopsis, but I am pleasantly surprised. The somewhat gloomy foreword, a scientific journal by the character Dr. Isaac Nuemann himself, presents the subtle eerie tone that resonates throughout the story from start to finish. I'm impressed by the way author Stan Smith brilliantly weaves the modern myths together into the story. The plot is not unfamiliar to me, yet Smith is still able to deliver a multi-layered and unpredictable twist to it, topped with entertaining elements that won’t let your attention go until the end.

My only complaint is I wish there was more to the ending. By no means that it is poor – in fact the ending is brilliantly written, but it definitely makes readers hunger for answers. Overall, this is a novel with modern mysteries galore; Bermuda Triangle, ghost ships, UFOs, and aliens. Any readers that love this kind of material won't want to overlook this excellent work by Stan Smith.

When starting to read this work of fiction I was first surprised by the rather gloomy introduction, then impressed by the story’s development. There is an underlying rhythm that gets faster over time. The characters are realistic and believable with all their flaws. The story is cleverly written, creating an eerie sensation that makes it difficult to put the book away. I had to, several times and - it was hard.

Stan Smith expertly draws you into The Search for Bryant Hunter, cleverly combining the past, the present, facts, and myths. Firm, characters, conflicts, murder, greed, etc. are completely fictional. Thanks to Stan, the reader gets to know the fictional characters quite well. Meet Ike, Kris, Duke and Stephen and their adversaries and - see for yourselves.

Congrats, Stan! Reading The Search for Bryant Hunter means time well spent. :-)

A must read for all fans of extraordinary stories.

I am looking forward to reading further books by Stan Smith, e.g. Lark-Ellen (a short story).

I received a free copy of this book from Story Cartel, and I have to say that the mobi file they gave to me (and possibly other potential readers) was horribly formatted - with blank lines popping up in the middle of paragraphs and sentences.

Normally, that'd be the death knell for reading an e-book for me. But this story was interesting enough for me to overlook those annoyances and carry on. The tale was well-written, there was some excellent characterization, and the author pulls you into the story with some unique situations and point-of-views of those situations. I think the sequence with the first appearance of the yacht, with it bearing down on a fishing trawler, will draw a lot of people into this story, as it did me.

Suspension of disbelief is a given with Science Fiction and this book is no exception, starting with some dialogue and plot points that didn't quite work for me. But these are easy to overlook because the basic premise is so fascinating. Apparently there is another sentient, intelligent, class of beings who inhabit more of our planet than humans do. They live in the depths of the ocean and they're not happy with their land-dwelling neighbors. Who could blame them? Read to enjoy, though you may think twice before boarding your yacht again.
