Marc Chagall born Moishe Shagal (6 July 1887 – 28 March 1985) was a Belarusian, Russian and French artist of Jewish ancestry.
An early modernist, Chagall was associated with the École de Paris, as well as several major artistic styles and created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints.
Chagall lived in France and Russia for decades but in 1941, he settled in New York, which was full of writers, painters, and composers who, like himself, had fled from Europe during the Nazi invasions.
After the war, he chose to return to France and spent his last years living in the Côte d'Azur.
It felt like a miracle to come across a reproduction of a book I had seen in Paris in 1961 (but could not afford to buy then). The illustrations move me profoundly and give a whole new sense of these Biblical texts. The book is small and costs only $19.95. I can think of a dozen people I would like to give it to as a gift.
Since I read a lot of 18th and 19th century literature that references biblical stories, I decided to finally tackle the Ur-Text.
Not to get all atheistic on a goodreads Bible review, but the more I learn about religion and Christianity, the less and less believing I am. Reading the Bible itself, well, now I'm just confused how anyone else can have faith. That's all I'm going to say on that.
This is a beautiful edition - small, in thick pages and illustrated, though contains only three books of the 40-something that make up the entire canon. It's also in archaic English that may be hard to read for many, though it's more poetic and artistic that way, which suits this edition's purpose well.
Guys I’ve just realised, if a man constantly tests you to make you prove your love, that shit is manipulative and controlling and lowkey on the way to DV. That’s literally what god is doing it every story, and we are supposed to praise this guy?? Hell nah
This book was originally published in France where he lived much of his life. He began illustrating the bible in 1931. His paintings are beautiful but many are details of a larger work. I wished the book was larger with full illustrations (it is tiny.) The Jewish Canon is the Tanakh which is divided into 3 sections: the Torah (the Five Books of Moses), the Nevi'im (Prophets) and Ketuvim (Writings which has the Song of Solomon). I don't know the reason they chose to show these books or if he illustrated any others.
Beautifully done. The interpretations by Chagall really bring these old stories to life. I only gave it four stars because I wish it had more books. Skipping from Genesis and Exodus to the Song of Solomon was sort of random and it left me feeling like I wanted more. Other than that, fantastic!
Although this particular translation is easy reading, the pairing of Chagall's paintings is simply beautiful. Thank you Musee Marc Chagall, Nice, France.
