Rate this book
'The German Battery at Longues-Sur-Mer' is the essential guide to the Longues Battery. On top of a 65 meter cliff, 3 miles west of Arromanches, Longues-Sur-Mer dominates the Normandy coastline making it the ideal location for the Germans to install a battery of four 150 mm canons, which threatened the Gold Beach to the East and the Omaha Beach to the west. The battery consists of 4 Krupp 150mm,TbtsK C/36 (L/45) cannons from a decommissioned destroyer, in type M272 Casemates with a range of 12.5 miles and a large, range-finding and observation post type M262. On 6th June 1944, known as D-Day, as early as 5.30 am the allies heavily bombed this battery, but it continued firing until the evening. Without further fighting the British were able to ensure their position by the following day. This book includes fascinating site maps and an interesting tourist route of the only battery which is still has its guns present today.

This book is a good supplement to have when seeing the historic site at Longues-sur-Mer...especially if you have the happy misfortune of visiting during the off season when just about everything is closed. It's pretty bare but if you think of it as a starting point to pique your interest and make sure you understand a bit of what you are seeing then if does its job well.
