Turkish Coffee

Coffee has played an important part in Turkish life for 500 years. Although it originated in Ethiopia and was later introduced to Yemen in the Arabian peninsula, neither of these countries supply the world with coffee today. Both places are remembered only in accounts of coffee’s history, which is interwoven with legend. For a long time the world coffee trade has been in the hands of international trading companies that purchase the raw or roasted beans from distant countries. Although tea has brought about a decrease in coffee drinking in Turkey, in recent years the arrival of international coffee brands and coffee house chains has sparked off a slow revival.

1950 yılında Sivas’ın Divriği ilçesine bağlı Kırkgöz köyünde doğdu. İlk ve ortaokulu Divriği’de okudu. 1968’de Sivas İlköğretmen Okulu’nu, 1971’de İstanbul Eğitim Enstitüsü Türkçe Bölümü’nü bitirdi. 1991’de Anadolu Üniversitesi Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı Bölümü’nde lisans tamamladı. Sakarya’da ilkokul öğretmenliği, Kahramanmaraş ve İstanbul’da Türkçe öğretmenliği ve yöneticilik yaptı, 1997’de emekliye ayrıldı. 1960’lı yıllarda başlayan okuma, araştırma, öğrenme ve yazma hevesiyle edebiyat, çocuk edebiyatı, folklor ve halk edebiyatı üzerine bine yakın makale ve ansiklopedi maddesine, elli kadar da kitaba imza attı; çok sayıda kitabın değişik katkılarla editörlüğünü yaptı.

”Povestea cafelei turcești” este o excelentă incursiune în istoria felului în care cafeaua a schimbat fundamental lumea turcească, odată cu primele boabe aduse de către otomani din Yemen, și, prin extensie, lumea occidentală. Un volum care împletește istoria cafelei cu felul în care ea trebuie preparată, a cafenelelor cu a ghicitului în cafea, a ustensilelor necesare cu a tradiției folclorice. În plus, este un album cu imagini inedite, excepționale, multe dintre ele din timpuri în care cafenelele nu erau deschise pentru turiști, ci pentru desfătarea și culturalizarea localnicilor.

Kahve, Afrika'dan Arabistan'a ve oradan da Türk iline ulaştı ve Türkler kahveyi çok sevdiler. Viyana kuşatmasından sonra Türkler geri çekilirken peşlerinde taşımak zahmet gerektiren büyük çuvallar bırakmışlardı. Avusturya askerleri çuvalları açınca kahverengi, acı bir tozla karşılaştılar. Biraz soruşturunca bunun adının kahve olduğunu ve suda kaynatılarak içilebildiğini öğrendiler. Yüz yıl geçmeden "Cafe"ler Avrupa'nın her tarafında boy göstermişti. Şüphe yok ki Türk kahvesi sahip çıkmamız gereken değerlerimizden birisi.

The book consists of two parts. The first one gives a very brief but a satisfactory history of Turkish Coffee. The second part deals with coffee in Turkish Folk Literature. Many photos, postcards, paintings and illustrations appear in the book to show coffee shops in the past centuries and Turkish coffee traditions. I recommend the book to all coffee lovers.

This books was such a delight. I've read it while drinking coffee (Turkish coffee, of course).
Prepare to travel to other times and places and learn about the history and cultural impact of coffee.
