When the liner Queen Elizabeth docks it is not long before Gideon of Scotland Yard is chasing the criminals who came ashore. As usual, he has a variety of cases to solve - rape, kidnap, vice and the inevitable theft, robbery and fraud. This title gives an exciting insight into the tangles web of clues and many complications requiring the attention of the Yard s top detective."
Standard Gideon. Read these on the tube and get quite annoyed when I get to my stop and have to leave it for a bit They are all much of a muchness but enjoyable even so
As if Gideon doesn’t have enough trouble with the home grown criminals two Americans arrive in England. One is a psychopath who raped and murdered a young girl in New York and fled to England. The second is a known con man who has come to London to carry out a kidnaping scheme. As well there is an investigation of some vice activity and about which the Yard is not sure of the guilt of the gentleman charged. Also some stolen watches appear to have been smuggled in to the UK but it is not clear who is responsible. Finally there appears to be an organized campaign of sabotage directed at British companies exporting to the US. As usual not everything is settled by the end of the book. The last two cases are held over, possibly for the next book. Besides this activity there are two matters of the personal nature in this novel. The first is that Gideon’s eldest daughter is having a very troublesome pregnancy and Kate has gone there to help out. The second is that Gideon has been offered the position of Assistant Commissioner, a position which has a larger pay packet and a better pension but is basically an administrative position rather than an investigative one. Both these issues will be resolved by the end of the book. All in all an enjoyable read.
Gideon doesn't trust the conclusions Scotland Yard has drawn about a vice ring, and murder soon proves him right. A con man steps out of his normal pattern, but Gideon has no doubt it is he who arranged the kidnapping of an heiress. Meanwhile Gideon must decide whether to accept a promotion that would place him permanently behind his desk.
