War Games
The owner of Rutledge Military Academy, Colonel Anthony Rutledge (Ret.), hires private eye Markham at his L.A. office and asks him to drive up to the school. Markham wants to know why the head of a military school needs a private detective, and Rutledge says that somebody is threatening to kill him. Markham finds plenty of suspects who want Rutledge dead, but will he be able to find the right suspect before time runs out?

Markham gets a call from a Colonel Rutledge, who runs his own boys military academy. Our P.I. learns the Colonel has received a death threat, in that form of letters cut from newspapers and magazines, and he wants to learn from who. The police would lemnd to much bad publicity to his school.
Markham soon learns the man is a martinet when it comes to school, enforcing his own brand of discipline to both students and instructors, all in the name of making them men in the mold he'd decided was best.
He has a sixteen year old granddaughter he'd raised and a preliminary list of possibles.
Another look at the eighties(where this story first appeared, from the pen of one today's best writers.
